  • An introduction to outcrop patterns and decoding geological evolution - using William Smith’s 1815 original and the State Geologic Map of Pennsylvania. Watch this if you're new to geological maps and what they can tell us! Part of "The Shear Zone" video channel. Copies of the maps are available on the Shear Zone website (see link from Channel home page).

Good video Rob. There's an excellent book about William Smith and the making of his map:. The Map That Changed the World, by Simon Winchester. I still find it amazing how similar it is to today's version.

      Simon Winchester's book is a classic - it's a surprising story too.

I find the cartoon for V-ing a little confusing because the strata still appear horizontal to me, even though they are supposed to be dipping towards the top of the cartoon.

Indeed - in the second block diagram series the strata are horizontal. This sequence shows how outcrop pattern can be controlled by topographic relief. To look at the concept of v-ing in valleys - try the video with that title - and/or the Thermopolis one.

Hi Rob, this is a great video, although part of it halfway through confuses me. How aren't the rocks at 7:06 dipping towards us rather than away from us?

no - (v gently) away, the hilside is towards the viewer... thanks for the question and the comment...
