I have to agree in expressing disappointment about the screens. If the tab s8 had the OLED display, I would have had no hesitation going for the smaller tab. Why would they put a "budget" display on a premium tablet?! It makes no sense, thats what the lite or FE editions are for.

Be happy that it is not Amoled. It is a way gentler on the eyes. Amoled is nice for immediate effect, but it's worse when you watch for hours. Battery life is also better with S8.

@@bororobo7036 you make a fair point. There are positives to that, being better battery but seeing that blue light filter difference was a bit of a let down, it just seemed really washed out.

I have them side by side right now. The screens on both of them are nice, and the little one has inky blacks and vibrant colors. It's so emersive I forget there is a screen difference. I like the screen on the little one a lot. The bigger one does have a beautiful screen, but, when you shrink artwork down it always looks great. Not a downgraded experience at all.

Can you please tell me if you have tried drawing on both tablets and if the bigger display of the 8+ offers a more comfortable experience? I guess I know the answer but I guess I want to know how much of a difference there is. Is the smaller display manageable while drawing?

    • @hybridinfodesk409

@eugenepiven2432 I love them both. My little one for tight detailed artwork easy to get up close and immersing. It my "copilot" when I'm on my pc and don't want to interrupt a process. Small, lightweight, and i can look up stuff fast in a big enough window.
The bigger one is great for consumption. Side by side research. Quick interactions and communications. Drawing and looking at creative work. I video edit using PowerDirector on both easily.

I preordered the ultra and to be honest, I really prefer the size of the S8 11 inch, perfect size IMO. However, I wish it did have the oled display and twin front cameras, automatic variable refresh rate. Watching movies or video on OLED tablets is the best for me, the experience is almost 3D like because of super blacks and deep contrast. It is the whole reason I buy Samsung Tablets is for their super amoleds. The experience for media consumption is just unbeatable even compared to ipad pro's mini led. Yes, the Apple iPad Pro's M1 chip makes its performance stellar. However let us be honest, buyers purchase tablets mostly for media consumption. The M1 chip is handsdown a performer, the more difficult question to ask yourself is will you be able to utilize at least 80% of it. IMO, most users won't. The chip on the S8 is more than adequate, plus it has Samsung DEX and a more manageable filing system. More so, it gives better value as it comes with the pen, and that awesome oled screen is hard to beat. Yes, ipad pro is brighter. But how often do you watch or use your tablet under the bright scorching sun, we in Asia rarely do; probably in the US which you guys have cold wind factor. Anyhow, just sharing an opinion. Great review!

It's not OLED but AMOLED, there is a difference. Right now everything is in short demand including displays. Supply chains are broken all across the world and this was a way to make sure they could more tablets by using different displays. It also cost more, a lot more right now.

Last year i bought a Tab A7 for mainly for reading manga and LNs. After a year of using, the 3GB ram is really struggling to run multiple apps (also can't keep more the 3 browser tab active) and it can barely install any apps in the 32GB storage. I wished I had known that you can't install apps on the microSD card. I'm still thinking if I should just spend it on a premium tablet (either S8 or S8+) and be done with it.

I decided on the Samsung Galaxy S8 Ultra. At first, I was shocked by the huge display, after 3 days I got used to it and I would never go back to a smaller one. All you need to do is install Galxy Max Hz to force an adaptive screen refresh (automatically between 60 and 120 hz). Thanks to this, the Tablet can run on the battery for 11 hours. This application is a bit complicated to install but it pays off. Anyway, I am very happy with this tablet

Display quality is absolutely fine; sure, OLED would have been nice, but the price would have been nastier. I got a £150 discount plus a further £150 off from Samsung for trading in my 2013 LG G Pad!

You don't need to turn the eye comfort or temperature up that high to benefit from it. A little goes a long way; 1/5th of the way up is comfortable enough. I have the feature turned on but have the slider all the way off which still gives you a warmer image with less blue light but looks more natural (not too reddish). Obviously, I would have preferred OLED, but the TFT screen actually looks fantastic as it has great color reproduction, high resolution, and 120HZ. Unless you have the brightness turned up really high, black levels look fine, too. Still, the more portable 11 inch size makes up for the lack of OLED.

What really makes a difference is when you're an artist or a student who intends to only work on the tablet for note taking for example. We can actually see the latency since Samsung managed to reduce it to 2ms on the S8 + which is incredible since the iPad Pro is like 8 or 6 ms I don't exactly remember.

After watching this review carefully I decided to order the S8+. I do like the size of the S8 but the plus gives me more room creatively to work on, & It'll be great for note taking in school. Good to know I'm not alone in my frustration that Samsung didn't include the AMOLED display on the base S8. Was the cost savings really that great? At BestBuy right, the 128GB versions of the S8 and S8+ are both the same, so the S8+ really seems to be the better value... depending on how you plan to use it. As I approach 60, I have to say that I am definitely appreciating larger displays, but I also appreciate the ergonomics/balance of the S8's size. I'm actually playing with the S7 FE right now. It seems a little on the heavy side, and the main impetus for trying it was the bundled keyboard cover. They keyboard cover is a big value-add and works really well, BUT out of the box, the kickstand won't support the weight of the tablet. It leans back too far causing the tablet to lose connection with the keyboard rendering it useless. I was really leaning toward the S8+ (same size as the S7 FE), but this issue makes me want the smaller, lighter S8 all the more... except for the display. Still debating which to use...

Have a current S7+ 5G and love it, but wish it were smaller. Upgraded three days ago from the Fold 2 and Tab S7+ 5G, to the Fold 3 and S8+......loved the Ultra but too big. Wish they made an OLED tab between 8"-9" and has the same power performance, including top end processor and large battery (I'd sacrifice some thinness for a larger battery). Couldn't do the S8 standard, substandard screen panel, less pixel density, and not much cheaper tbh. Granted the S8+ is $1799AUD here and the Fold 3 is $2499.....which is ridiculous but, my Fold 2 and S7+ 5G were $2999 and $1999 respectively. I spent $700 less to get similar form factors but better performance, and IPX8 on the Fold. So maybe they are going in the right direction.

I know how much I use my phone for searching etc. and how much better it would be to pick up a tablet to do the same. For all the many reasons I will use a tablet it will be hand held almost all of the time and the S8 just fits right. Yes...Samsung did bad by not using the better screen.... Last night after finding a store that had both on display my mind was made up....buy the S8...much more comfortable to use...if it was the S8+ I do not think I would look forward to picking it up as often....Now I am still a bit confused....I like to have it all....I do want to make a decision fast...It will probably be the S8 (with an "ouch" feeling) because I will use it. I’m watching this video on my Samsung tab S5E & the only reason why I won’t upgrade to the Samsung Galaxy tab S8 is cos NO Oled screen, there is no way I will spend £650 for a top of the range Samsung tablet with a massive cut corner of not fitting a great Oled screen that I’m used to, & I don’t want an enormous difficult to hold & not having the portability that I like & the weight being uncomfortable and heavier when holding it with my hand, I was very disappointed when the Tab S8 came with just an lcd tft screen & if u want the Oled screen you have to go for the larger 12.5” cluncky & spend more money for a larger tablet I just don’t want 11” is the perfect sweet spot and Samsung couldn’t be bother to put an Oled screen. What a big disappointment SAMSUNG.

Great review. I do think you could have covered 1 thing though. Using the screen outdoors. Sounds like the S8 goes pretty bright but it would be good to know how it fares. I had the same issue when looking at laptop reviews. Not everyone lives inside 24/7. I live in the Tropics and spend most of my time outdoors where the ambient light is VERY bright. With my laptop I went Matt screen, not so easy to find. Wish they also did tablets with Matt. The bright polished glass effect is like looking in a mirror. Also wish to use the tablet for remote mapping when in my 4x4, so I wonder how it will go in the direct sun? Anyway, thanks again for the review, you have confirmed for me that the standard sized s8 is the way to go.

I got the S8+ for note-taking, general organization, and watching videos while cooking. I have an OLED Tab S6 suspended above my face in bed from a flexible neck tablet holder. I leave it plugged into power 24/7. It's great for video and reading since I don't have to hold up the tablet and since it always has power. I like the size of the S8+ for note-taking. I would not want to take notes while sitting in my recliner on a handheld S8 Ultra because it is too big and on the other hand, the S8 because it is too small. So it's a matter of the right tool for the job I need it to do and for handheld note-taking the S8+ is perfect.

Thanks for this, really helpful. I currently have a Tab S4 which visually display wise is still stunning, but stuck on Android 10 now, 4gb of ram and the Snapdragon 835 is getting a bit long in the tooth. Only real reason I'd go for the S8 Plus is the AMOLED display as I don't really need a bigger screen. Shame as it leaves me feeling a bit confused, newer software, much faster, but lcd from amoled feels like a downgrade no matter how good the lcd is. Maybe the S9 they will stick an AMOLED back in the 11. As you say, seems strange as the S5e had AMOLED at a much lower price point. Weird decision.

The fact that Samsung S7 and S8 are the only ones in the S series, since it was launched in 2014, to have LED displays, is Samsung shamelessly pulling an Apple on us, dividing us into peasants and premium clients, when both products got a premium price and forcing us to have a tablet with hardware we don't want, just to have a vital hardware feature, like an OLED display, that we really want 😭
