Retired obstetrician here. Babies are born looking purple or greyish-pink, because the heart is in a different configuration before birth. At birth, the hole between the two sides of the heart shuts and the blood supply to the placenta stops. This usually happens when the baby takes its first breath or, in the case of breech, as air touches the chest. In my career, I only ever delivered one baby above 8lbs. Well done, Lizzy. And well done, Cammy, for not panicking too much. Home birth is safe, possibly safer than hospital, because the risk of cross-contamination is absent. The mother is also far more relaxed at home, and not rushed to get the job done so that the bed can be freed up for the next birth.
I love this explanation. Also, don't newborns carry extra red blood cells to carry oxygen for the transition? Jaundice happens after a few days because of the demise of these excess cells leaving bilirubin? Please explain this better than I have! In Iona's words to Cam regarding Lizzie, "You have struck gold." There's no one like Lizzie. Mad respect.
What a beautiful baby girl! She will be a great farm girl keeping up with her brothers. Had both my babies at home, one during a huge snow storm. I love my midwife. "It's just like farming."🤣🤣🤣 Cammy describing the birth of his kids.
Wow, Lizzie is a dang hero of a Mama, right from the start and then on from there. To say a 10 pound 11 oz baby is big is a huge understatement! I had one that was just about 10 pounds and had to have a section after 13 hours of labor, so I’d say she did something incredible. So happy for y’all! From North Carolina, USA🫶
Baby needs to take first breath and there’s a hole not yet complete within the heart that will then close and baby fills with oxygen and circulation. (Quick explanation) Absolutely amazing! Congratulations to your family!
loved hearing about the birth of Bonnie, and Lizzie doing it just as nature intended, she is an amazon, and true not everyone has the ability to have natural childbirth, this will be a wonderful memory to share with your family as they grow, because it happens so fast, my son was born back to back, weighing in at 8lbs, 52 yrs ago now, it happens in a whirl, so glad you shared, thankyou and big hugs to you all xxx
I had an unintentional home birth on the kitchen floor (we did put down newspaper!) I had a new bed and didn’t want to ruin it 😂 This was my second daughter and the labour was an hour and a half, the midwife came and did what she had to do and I went back to bed, she was born at 2.45 in the morning. I can highly recommend it 😅❤ Many congratulations to you Cammie and Lizzie. A very warm welcome to Bonnie, love the name ❤
Lizzy is amazing to be able to do the delivery all on her own. Such a strong woman. Congratulations on the birth of your darling baby girl, Bonnie. 💞❤️👍
Oh my!! Lizzy is amazing! I could just picture her saying something like " I'll go work the sheep in a minute or two..I just have to have this baby first. Hang on a minute..." then off she goes. You are so right. She is a machine! God bless your family! ❤
I love hearing others birth stories. I had both my babies at home almost 30 years ago. I never regretted it. Beautiful births. Congratulations to you and your family. Lizzie and Bonnie both look great!
Lizzie is so kind and empathetic to others, she's truly a wonderful gift to Cammie and the children, I so look forward to seeing her and Cammie's journey thru life ❤❤
Well done Lizzy and Cammy. What a wonderful birth. I love the name Bonnie. ❤ (The reason animals eat the placenta and amniotic sac is to avoid predators. Humans do not need to eat it.)
Congratulations from Nashville, Tennessee! Once again I’m in awe of Lizzie! Such a gift to be able to have healthy babies at home. I wish they had more services like that here. They exist, but most women just go to hospitals. Bonnie is a beautiful strong Scottish name….I’m sure she will wear it proudly. Thanks for sharing the story Cammy! 🙏🏻🫶🏻xx
I love the deep thoughts about parenthood - how short a timespan it really is when your kids seem all-consuming. Thank you Cammy! & Iona, I'm glad your parents had that "accident"!💕💕
Congratulations! I’m so glad I saw this post so I could hear all about your little Bonnie’s arrival. Thanks so much, Iona and Cammy! Best regards to Lizzie!
Brilliant catch up. Congratulations to the Wilson family 🍼👏. So pleased all went well. Thanks for sharing. Love how Iona was hooked to the whole experience. Bonnie is a lovely name. Lizzie you are a legend. 👏🍼😍
Congratulations Cammy and Lizzy on the birth of Bonnie....I remember when you introduced Lizzie to your sheep fans!!!!!! How time flies....best wishes to all of the Wilson family and fingers crossed you get the farm you definitely need!!!!
I held my breath when you told about the birth. Lizzie is really special, I said it before and I say it again: You are a lucky man (and she is a lucky woman,). It is remarkable that she is so "hard" to herself but thinks about other people who are not that lucky (and capable).
Oh my goodness what a story! Congratulations on your new little girl,I saw the video of Jock holding Bonnie Ahhh my finger! So adorable. Bless your family
This was an amazing pod cast. Thank you Cammy for telling us about Bonnie's birth. Lizzy is such a trooper. She is my hero. I just cant wrap my mind around her having a 10 pound 11 Oz. Baby with no pain medication. Congratulations on a beautiful birth and an even more Beautiful Baby girl. Bonnie is a beautiful name.❤❤❤
Had both my kids at home. First was in 1982, 8lbs 8oz and 21inches long. 2nd in 1984 was 9lbs 9oz and only 18inches long, he was square and didnt appear to have a neck. No drugs, no problems. My daughter had hers at home too. First 8lbs 6oz, 20inches long. 2nd 10 years later 10lbs 3oz 21 inches long. Also no drugs, no problems. We both wouldnt have had it any other way, but i know its not for everyone. Something i always thought was a benefit of being at home and not having the disruption of taking baby home from hospital was that all 4 of these babies slept for a 6 hr stretch at night by 5 days old. Seems too much to be a coincidence. Happy it all has gone so well for Lizzie and Bonnie and Cammie is such a sweet dad. My oldest sister is named Bonnie. Born in 1952 and named after Bonnie Blue Butler in Gone with the Wind. Hopefully that doesnt spoil the name for you 🤣
So great to hear Bonnie's birth story from Cammy. Yeah, I think Lizzie would not go into details - like Cammy said, she's very pragmatic, even with the no-midwife/delayed first breath elements! I had my one and only daughter in hospital, 16 years ago, but natural/no pain meds - and I used an exercise ball like Lizzie was on to help the process along. I wish I had had the birthing pool too! Anyway, congratulations on the new addition to the family, Cammy, and I'm looking forward to seeing glimpses of Bonnie in upcoming Sheep Game episodes! ❤👶❤
Congratulations Lizzie and Cammy on the birth of Baby Bonnie. Looking forward to watching them grow up together with you both on the Sheep Farm. Blessings always!
The worst place in the whole wide world to try to sleep is in a hospital. I imagine Lizzie's reluctance to use gas was also the very small chance it might hamper baby's reflexes & respirations 💕💕
Lizzy absolutely is legendary! I enjoyed hearing about the home births so much, and it's great to know she will be homeschooling. What an amazing family the Wilson's are ❤ That last part truly choked me up about it being the last time you sit them down or the last time you play with your friends. I think we lack the appreciation we once had, but it is beautiful to know that people are still holding on to traditional family values. I can't end this without mentioning how great Iona is. I love how she gets all cracked up, which, how could she not speaking with Cammy? 😅 Blessings to all of you!
My first baby was a girl 9lbs 11oz. No drugs. Second baby a boy, 8 lbs 7oz. My husband slept through its birth as he was a hovering bother. Congratulations to Lizzie and Cammy. Bonnie is a beautiful name for a beautiful girl. Cammy, you are a proud husband and a proud father. A special, precious family indeed.
I was very happy to have epidurals with my three. I don’t consider my hospital stays as horrible. It was so nice to have the help with bathing and taking care of my peritoneum, as well as having meals brought to me! Lizzie, you are so amazing with all you do. Much respect!!! Congratulations and best wishes from Alabama, USA
Congratulations Cammy and Lizzy. Bonnie will be a great addition to your beautiful family. I have two grandsons and a granddaughter. The boys love their little sister. She definitely runs the house. I have a daughter Bonnie as well beautiful name. We will enjoy watching the kids grow up.
Congratulations on the birth of your daughter Cammy 😊 There's nothing like a new baby ❤ It sounds like Lizzy is a very confident and capable woman, well done momma. I'm sure Jock and Angus will be very protective of their little sister. Hugs to all.
That was good hearing your Birth of Bonnie experience and Iona's reactions. I do love all the quotes you impart too. Looking forward to following Bonnie's progress.
Congrats to both of ya on the birth on Bonnie, she was big. Lizzy, ya didn't look that big on the videos. Love herein ya went right back to work, you're a rock star lady. Mother of the year for you lady... I had 3 kids the same way Lizzy all natural no meds at all. So happy for ya both and waiting now to see Little Bonnie out in the farm working with mom soon. 💖💖💖
Congratulations 🎊 great listening to you talk about the birth of all your kids, nothing greater in this world than the arrival of new life.My grand mother had nine kids ,8 of the nine were born without a midwife, all big babies ,as they sall tall man big babies
My first was 10 lbs 14 oz and I delivered him with no drugs. After I met other kids at the playground and realized you couldn’t tell whose mum had drugs and whose mum didn’t so I wanted drugs for the second. No luck, didn’t get to the hospital in time. Third one, the sun and moon aligned and I got an epidural. Much more civilized way to deliver.
Great podcast and beautiful story. Congrats Cammy and Lizzie on your beautiful daughter. Cammy and Iona I love your podcasts and how natural you both are in interviewing. Your personalities match so well it makes the show wonderfully interesting and fun. ❤❤
Thank you for sharing your daughter’s birthday story with us. I’m a midwife and l truly appreciate that you shared it. In the US home births are not so common so sharing the story means a lot. As a Mom of five I understand what you’re saying about this being an exhausting time of your life, but like lambs children grow up so quickly. God bless you and your family. ❤
I had two of my 4 at home. My fourth came before the midwife and before I'd taken my trousers off! She was tiny compare to the other 3. Ended up going to hospital for a few nights as she had an infection. I would absolutely recommend home births. The first one I had there were 2 midwifes and a student, all Sat watching me. You don't get that level of attention in the hospital, you get strapped to a machine, limiting mobility which increases pain and then snow balls with interventions and drugs etc. Well done Lizzie, and congratulations to all of you xxx
Lizzy is a rock star! 🌟 Congratulations on your newest family addition. Let’s see how it is before she has her Daddy totally wrapped around her little fingers. Love and best wishes from Georgia, USA
Loved this. And Cammy, you said it, Lizzy is legendary. It's like she's a modern day frontier woman. Things need doing so you just get them done...including childbirth
Gads thats a HUGE baby. Blessed be ❤ everyone is OK! I can totally understand Lizzy just wanting to get on with it. And sending you out for a nap...I was the same way.
Over a ten pound girl? Wow Cammy. Are you sure Lizzy wasn't on too good a bite? All kidding aside: congratulations Lizzy and Cammy. If she's anything like her Mum and Dad, Bonnie will help make the world a better place.
65 year old here, 1st 3 in hospital and 2nd 3 at home. No pain relief either. Well done Lizzie, can’t wait to see Bonnie and the boys in the future. Love the name. 🇳🇿. Chew, chew, chew 🤣😂🤣
Brilliant conversation. I really enjoyed it. I tell my son all the time to enjoy the times with his boys because they grow so fast. I try to spend as much time with them as I can .
What a great show. Bonnie is a great name. Jock can learn both Scottish and English. Everyone speaks one language out of their circle, and one they use professionally. I'm sure in everyday life your Scottish would not be understood by many people.
❤❤❤❤❤🎉 congratulations on Bonnie entrance into the world and the calm parents she has, both so accustomed to helping new life begin. Job well done, Lizzie & Cammy. 🎉
Congratulations to all of you!💙💙💖 The gallows humour isn't just a Scottish thing, we have it in North East England too. I have terminal heart disease & I constantly joke about it! 🤣🤣🤣
I love this quote from Hook - Your children love you. They want to play with you. How long do you think that lasts? Soon Jack may not even want you to come to his games. We have a few special years with our children, when they're the ones that want us around. After that, you're going to be running after them for a bit of attention. It's so fast, Peter. It's a few years, then it's over. And you are not being careful. And you are missing it.
I had 2 in our local midwife led unit and last 2 at home. My midwife for both home births became a friend. I much preferred them helping me to do what I needed to do rather than me feeling like I'm on their territory and I have to do what I'm told! My sister in law had last one at home minus midwife and my brother had clearly not being paying full attention for the previous 4 births, but he had lambed plenty of sheep, so he asked her if she felt like biting the cord. She was fairly certain she did not feel like biting the cord and they could just wait for the midwife!! Umbilical cords and placentas are a fine-tuned machine and irreducibly complex. Really amazing. We studied it as a home ed project with the older ones when I was pregnant with #4. When he arrived, we woke eldest 2 up to come and see the placenta and cut the cord but really they would rather have stayed asleep!!
Congratulations Lizzy and Cammy ❤ . The reminder of home birth was hilarious. As a farmer of a good few years and thousands of lambing and calving assists later our second daughter was born at home . Similarly to you guys there wasn't enough time between calling the midwife and the action getting serious. I thought I was in full agricultural control of the situation until seeing the head crown at which point blind panic set in and I was rendered utterly useless. Thankfully it was only seconds until the knock at the door . Hugely embarrassing and my wife tells the tale regularly when in farming company 😂😂 . All the best to you and your growing family ❤

Cammie you are the luckiest man in the world having Lizzie as the mother of your children.
Lizzie is the best.
Lizzy is amazing.
My first labour was 36 hours. No way I could do a home birth or do it with no pain relief but have so much respect for women who do.
What a beautiful baby girl! She will be a great farm girl keeping up with her brothers. Had both my babies at home, one during a huge snow storm. I love my midwife.
"It's just like farming."🤣🤣🤣 Cammy describing the birth of his kids.
Lizzy is a saint…that was a BIG baby. She will forever be my hero.

Great news about wee Bonnie! We’ve all been waiting to hear! Glad they are both so well!
OUTSTANDING! All the very very best! Congratulations!! 👏🏻👏🏻🐑❤️

Lovely listening to lizzies birth story, I hope the things I made actually fit baby Bonnie, I didn’t think she’d be as big as 10lb 11oz!!!!
Congratulations to you Cammie and Lizzie on the safe arrival of your new daughter Bonnie. Lots of love from Judy in Claydon, Ipswich. Suffolk.
