Excellent story!
The main flaw in this short story is that it TOTALLY FAILED TO DEVELOP ANY CHARACTER FOR ETHAN. You could have had him practicing any number of uniquely human skills or hobbies that showcased his interests qualities or merit ... esp since he had ample need to fill his days doing something. Stuff like tai chi, playing music (improv jazz in particular could have offered a dramatic contrast with the reserved and logical society), dance, art, sports, holo sailing, et al. You did that with a bodybuilder in a diff story, and it sorta worked ... dunno why you didnt do something similar here. I finally got fed up with the leaden pace and lack of imagination at about the 1 hr mark, and bailed.
Then again, this is probably Generative AI, so who am I kidding.
