    People have no idea of how much time you have to devote to these birds. I found Sam (a very large female red tail hawk) along side the road with an injured wing. I was 12. I threw a blanket over her and we put her into the back of my dads car and got her to the vet. Her wing could not be completely repaired, however it did not need to be removed and she could keep it in place. She became a member of our household. It took me months before she would trust me completely. We finally got to the point wear we bonded. One day I put my hand behind her head and she did not flinch, so I scratched behind her head and she rubbed her very sharp beak against my hand as if to caress me. After that I could handle her without gloves. I always kept my hands up high so she would not be tempted to climb on my wrist and pierce me while attempting to get a better grip. I always wore a heavy falconry glove when she stood on my hand or wrist. Those talons are sharp! We acquired falconry books to learn how to feed and care for her. Over the years her wing mended and she could glide 30 to 40 feet. I believe her happiest times were riding on my padded shoulder while I rode my bike. She would stretch out he wings as if she was flying. My dad tried so hard to get her to bond with him, however she refused, which meant I was responsible for her upkeep, physical therapy and companionship for 19 years. We do not know how old she was when I found her. I was forced to stay in our small town and find whatever work was available and turn down better work where I would have to move to a city and live in an apartment. Sam depended on me and I had to man up and honor my commitment. Sam was family. I will never regret it. Sam taught me patience, sacrifice, and love for all living things. I'm 68 and still miss her.

    One of the better vids on TH-cam displaying the awesomeness of the unique connection between a Falconer and their chosen Raptor, with which to share their life with, if only for a brief season or two! Hats off to Jaelyn Hanbury and Sitha! Spectacular job in capturing the field and intimate moments between a Person and a Wild Raptor!

    Did she just say that she is going to trap it only to release it

    • @ecologygarden
      @ecologygarden 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Putting it that way it doesn't make much sense . Most falconers train birds to hunt and catch dinner for the falconer . She did say its to help the hawk through its first winter , maybe better to put scraps of meat out iv seen british Buzzards (Buteo buteo) come down for scraps of meat ,Buzzards are close relatives of Red Tails (Buteo jamaicensis ) . I dont mean American "buzzards" these are different birds ... what we British call Vultures (New World /Turkey Vultures ).

      It's pretty common to release birds as an apprentice after having them for a season.
