I’m a falconer and this is a good intro for people wanting to get started. Finding a sponsor really isn’t difficult find your state hawking club and go to one of the meets. If a falconer sees your passion he would love to take you on. If I seen dedication and passion I would sponsor someone eventually 😃

Finding a sponsor might not be terribly difficult IF you live in a populated part of the country. If you're out in the middle of nowhere, it's rough.

The image of a hunter with a trained bird has always been a haunting and eerie image. There’s something much colder and cut throat in that than another animal like a dog.

During my time deployed in the Army, our Afghani translator was a master falconer. He owned 2 Laggar Falcons. He was able to bring them out a couple times and show them off. Gorgeous birds and a lovely trade.
He was able to get out of Afghanistan and into the United States when we pulled out of the operation. He now lives here in the US, in western Texas. He could not bring his falcons sadly but is getting into American Falconry. Unfortunately the US standards and Afghani standards are quite different. The good news is he already knows the puzzle and how it goes together with animal husbandry and housing. So I think he'll do just fine.

My grandma got me the my side of the mountain trilogy when I was in 1st grade. I thought the same thing, that it would suck. But I read it and it blew my mind. I was obsessed with everything he did, even the acorn pancakes he would make, I would always try to convince my mom to let me make them. I’m 13 now and my dad found an introduction to falconry course coming up in August, it’s all day and you actually get to train with the falcons. Just hoping I can get into the sport, it’s been my dream.

    • @TheArizonaAssasin

@@goat.ong. I haven’t. I was really at odds with the hunting aspect of it- I have nothing against most hunting or people who hunt (except for big game hunters who engage in canned hunts of endangered species, screw them,) but outside of fishing, I just don’t have the stomach for it unless my immediate survival depended on it. I’d asked a few Falconers if a person could learn how to be a Falconer and just not hunt with the birds, and they said that the whole point of Falconry is to hunt, and suggested that I might be better suited to rehabbing birds and caring for rescues that can’t be reintroduced to the wild, so I’m looking into that instead. That way, I can still work with the birds and take care of them, and I won’t be taking away any time or resources from a person who wants to learn the craft.

Now being married with 2 kids in the house, a full time job, starting a side business, training my dogs, taking care of things around the house (about to replace 250 feet of fencing including digging post holes)...the free time just doesn't exist to fairly house a bird or be able to fly them enough to be fair to the bird. In a few years I may be able to. Being an adult sucks at times LOL

The steps in the first 2min are correct, the the order of the steps can vary from state to state. In TX, you have to have a sponsor before you can take the test or have your equipment/facilities inspected. (Not sure why they do it this way as opposed to how other states do it where you have to have all 3, order doesn't matter).

    So I have a question:
When you get a sponsor, what is that sponsor required to do. Is there a certain amount of time he must sponsor you before you can actually get an apprentice license. Because From what I’ve studied, you receive your apprentice license before the end of that 2 years with a sponsor, correct? So basically what I’m asking is what is the sponsor required to do before he can send a letter into the department so you can receive your apprentice license? I hope this made sense😂

Ik there are jobs that are available to falconers, mainly fitting in tge abatement, entertainment, or educational categories.
In abatement type jobs you are typically controllimg pest type animals, such as starlings or rodents for farmers fields, landfills, or airports.
In entertainmant theres gigs at places like Renaissance Fairs or Medieval Times.
And many schools or wildlife parks like them for educational purposes, scout meets and the like:)

I work 60-84 hours a week, I'd never have the time to take on an apprenticeship

I think the sponsorship is the biggest problem. I lived in Washington state and couldn’t even get a response from anyone in their falconers association. Considering finding a sponsor somewhere else, moving and taking the test again lol

@Plethera I am seriously considering it, I have only heard good things about falconry in California. If my house in Paradise didn't burn down I would still be there. Would be awesome to have a mew ready and a sponsor next year before season allows capture

@Plethera I have family in Oregon, and I contacted multiple falconers just to see if I could connect with someone in the area. Also received no reply back just like Washington. Idaho Falconers are the only group I have found that even respond or show an interest in looking to pass on the legacy but I do not plan on living in Idaho. Would like to eventually move back to Northern California and find some friends that are already into falconry. Being able to get ahold of someone from an association or just find out when a meeting is for some states seems to be a big issue within the sport here in the US, not sure the USFW did us all favors on the requirements or capability to get into the sport. I'm willing to put in the time to become a falconer, Im in it for the long term and I feel motivated to do it and pass on the sport to the next generation (I would hope to someday sponsor others). Especially after struggling so hard to find "the right sponsor". Any advice is always appreciated.

@Plethera Agreed! Great to hear your pursuing the sport. I've been studying the modern apprentice and falconry books for some time now. I have had falconers helping but no sponsorship offers to be found. Passed e exam but despite what I've been told I think the sponsorship comes first. We have to stay in contact. You might be a general falconer before me lol (in the middle of selling a home) However I do have a quail farm so I could technically be a falconers best friend by default. Looking at either Northern California or Oregon. However Falconry could definitely influence the move and location depending on the opportunity.

nicholas g your 13 that’s probably why.. it’s takes a lot of dedication. You can’t want to do it a for a week then decide to quit. That’s the main reason I’m hesitant on doing it. I don’t think I’ll be a good partner for the raptor.

    I. Think, antic, they was close to hunters, but not as presenors
They was, by the farm hunters, house, helped out
Self support, breed independently, healthy, , free
If they are your friends, they hunt with you,
