    One has never lived until one has had the protein in their outdoor prepared cuisine enhanced by passing insects 🐜

      I recall years ago an argument for banning pesticides which was that we'd all eat more protein without them!

    Thank you for the ‘shout out’ there! I suppose the English thing to do would be to say that you ‘shouldn’t have’, but I’m glad you did and clearly I crave attention, because I keep pumping out videos that I hope lots of imaginary friends will watch!
    Nice to see those mounds again from above.
    You obviously have my sympathy for being subjected to that horrifying flying ant attack, but I can honestly say, that segment was the most gripping and visceral thing I have ever seen on TH-cam! I hope it goes viral for you and gets you loads of views and subscribers.

    • @tweedyoutdoors
      @tweedyoutdoors  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You're very welcome, and it was credit where credit was due: I was impressed at your swift identification of the original purpose of those mounds.
      I don't think I entirely realised just how many flying ants I had been beset by until I watched the video back! Amazing too that the simple act of getting up and moving a few metres away appeared to get them off my back (both metaphorically and literally). Or perhaps that was a coincidence and it was more down to the fact the temperature was starting to drop and/or the light was starting to fade...?

      @@tweedyoutdoors you were on my big telly, so the full scale of the attack was very real. You could tell you weren't aware of how many of the critters were on you, too.
      This is the sort of content that TH-cam was made for. It really was a fantastic segment!

    I liked that. I’m still astonished that you can squeeze that much picture quality out of a black box built for extremist sportspeople. Good luck with your early retirement, you deserve it.

      Thank you! I have changed my editing workflow as of this video, until now I was mostly using LumaFusion on an iPad. I've just bought a MacBook and I tried Davinci Resolve for this video. It's not nearly as intuitive as LumaFusion and it seems to be giving me RSI but I think the final video quality is a bit better. Whatever I tried with LumaFusion in terms of ramping up the bitrate it always felt like the end result was a big drop in quality compared to the original clips. Although quite possibly TH-cam was sticking its oar in and making it worse.
      I still think this whole endeavour could be made much easier for people like me who essentially just want to join a bunch of clips together and then go back through and attempt to chop out the boring bits!
      What editor do you use? Your videos always look very slick.

    Another great video. I have to admire your ability to carry on despite a mob handed attack by the flying ants! As usual your presentation is really great and is a mixture of interest and humour. Looking forward to the next one.

      Thank you for those kind words. As mentioned elsewhere in the comments I didn't realise quite how bad the plague of flying ants was until I watched the video back!

    Hi Tweedy, Magnificent countryside and sunset. One of those farm tracks was very sunken so I am assuming is many 100’s years old. If not older. The wine and food looked awesome. Good to see Anglo Saxon’s are far more adventurous with our cooking these days! Me - I am supporting New Zealand Beef and Lamb!! Cheers Dave 🇬🇧 🇳🇿

    • @tweedyoutdoors
      @tweedyoutdoors  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks Dave, yes I think these "bostals" are fairly ancient, given the apparent age of the mining operations here the track was likely into the thousands of years old.

  • @ysgolgerlan
    @ysgolgerlan ปีที่แล้ว

    Thanks for the video, it sure was an interesting one. What a beautiful sunset that was. My jaw dropped when I saw all of those on your crisp white shirt, you should get a one-piece flying ant proof tweed suit. 👍

    • @tweedyoutdoors
      @tweedyoutdoors  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks Ysgolgerlan! In the grand scheme of things they were far less of a menace than other swarms of flying insects (wasps or midges being examples that spring to mind). Although I did feel I was getting bitten now and again, a day later the bite sights are only very mildly itchy, and I don't seem to have any rashes or anything. It was actually sort of fascinating that just moving a few metres away stopped them bothering me, there was obviously something special about that particular lump in the ground.

    What a magical sunset on a magical hill! The chili and wine with that view would be so awesome! However, I've got very long hair and those flying ants would have freaked me out and had me running down the hill flailing my arms like a lunatic 😂
    Cheers Tweedy! 🎩🍾🍷

    Thanks for the tip Tweedy I will be trying molasses and Tobasco in my vegie/bean curry. It's quite disappointing
    to see that the traditional oak countryside gates are now out of fashion. The galvanised pipe ones seem to be everywhere in your area even though they look completely out of place. Better ants in your chilli con carne than
    ants in your pants!!

    • @tweedyoutdoors

    If you're out and about tomorrow evening and the skies are clear, keep an eye out for the Perseids meteor shower. Best viewed from a deck chair with a glass or two of G-C, or in my case, Morgon.

      Couldn't find the specific part you mention, but more than likely the Ordnance Survey app. If you buy a paper map you can enter a code and get it downloaded to your phone or pay rather a lot of money annually for the entire map suite on your phone. Personally, I always carry a paper map as a backup to the phone so the annual subscription is not for me.

    Great video. I don't know if you recall old Linda McCartneys Chili(Non)Carne. But (Because I| also used to take cold (Beers) into the wild. I'd get a frozen dinner, stick it in with my beers. Cycle about my last 30k and then the meal would be defrosted and the beers cold. Heat up the meal in its (Convenient) metal cover over some wood and bracken and in 5 ten mins. Bob's yer Uncle and Fanny's your (Flying) Ant!

    You definitely offended the Mexicans by calling chili con carne Mexican as its from Texas. Good shout on the Wine. Exton is down the road from me so I will check it out. So is Wickham vineyard and Hambledon. Both are near the south downs.

    • @tweedyoutdoors
      @tweedyoutdoors  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I did check the history of the dish on Wikipedia before uploading the video and apparently it may well have Aztec origins! I think certainly the version of it we know here in the UK is highly Americanised (as demonstrated here with the Tabasco etc, and quite possibly the idea of adding molasses is something I picked up from an American family friend) but I believe Mexico (or the nations formerly occupying the land now known as Mexico) has had a large part in it if you go back far enough.
      Exton Park in general is a great wine producer in my opinion, although I'm not sure I can really wholeheartedly endorse this particular wine (the pure Pinot Meunier one) given the price tag!

      Fortunately I am blessed (?) with a broad appreciation of many types of booze, and if push comes to shove financially speaking I may in future stick to my Dad's cider, which is excellent, and costs nothing! (Albeit quite a lot of time / manual labour goes into its production of course...)
      Obviously if you've got used to the incredible scenery Scotland has to offer then the hills of Southern England may seem a bit tame by comparison! ...but what the South Downs may lack in altitude I think they make up for in atmosphere.
