Shimano FX1000FC An In-depth Look Shimano's Budget Ultralight Spinning Reel Thoughts and Disassembly

  • I picked up the new Shimano FX1000FC to see what their newest addition to their lower end ultralight spinning reels product line is like. In this video I will talk about what I like and dislike about the reel. I will also be doing a disassembly of the reel so we can take a good look at the mechanical parts of the reel. I start off by taking a quick look at other cheap Shimano reels. Shimano has a history of making good reliable budget friendly reels in the lower end of their product line. If you are looking at the newer Sienna 1000 (SN1000FG) sized reels, this one is very similar...in fact they are the same mechanically except for one extra ball bearing in the Sienna. If that one extra ball bearing on the main drive gear is worth the extra $10-$15 to you, then go with the Sienna. If you are looking for a good reel that retails for $19.99, you should take a look at this newer version of the FX1000. If you can deal with the 2 problems I have with it mentioned in the video, you will be happy with your purchase. Thanks for watching and be sure to leave any comments you may have in the comment section. If you found this video helpful, give it a like/thumbs up...it is very much appreciated!

    Really nice review, these reels are amazing value for money. I use my 4000 size to catch live bait. I compared mine to a Diawa that cost 4x as much, the body and rotor on the Shimano is stronger and feels just as smooth. The drag rating on the 4000 is really good for its size as well.

    I was actually looking at one of these at Academy today as a replacement to a micro set up(Zebco Dock Demon spinning combo) I had that was borrowed from me by my Son in law this past weekend and drug to the bottom of a lake by a fish and never to be seen again. I bought the C3000FX FC yesterday afternoon... I doubt if you'd actually get a better quality to price ratio than it... But if you really want to purchase a winner in price to quality ratio in my opinion - get the new SEDONA... It's got many to most of the midrange to upend Shimano reel's specs... Thanx for the awesome video it is very informative, I'm actually glad now after watching your video that I didn't purchase the sienna instead, for like 10-15$ more just due to one additional BB, I really don't think I made a mistake...

    The AX, IX, and FX were the bar standard for economy reels for years. They were good in function years ago, but the bail going back to 12 o'clock on a hookset wasn't ideal, though the trigger was a big marketing seller for Shimano.

I have a Nexave and a few Stradics and I thought the Nexave was really slick for the price, but the FX is just outright ridiculous!! At the pricepoint they are competing with utter crap!

    That's pretty cool. I have a few of those Sienna reels and like them pretty good. I don't know if they're made the same as that one because they're a few years old now so may be the older model sienna reels, but if I fish a long hard day with them, they'll rub a blister on one of my fingers because of how I hold it. I wonder if it's hitting me the same way that one hits you and that's why? They're still pretty smooth reels for the price. If this one's only difference is that one bearing, it's probably a real nice reel too.

    • @TheFishingHobby
      @TheFishingHobby  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@TheFishingHobby cool. So I can use part 20206 to replace the 5431 (the blue one) but the fx has one other bush, the white bush one on the pinion 15424 (or 15425 on mine as it is a c3000) that the sienna also has a bush for that so I guess I will have to speak to shimano or measure it. I will definitely upgrade it though, and make some carbon fibre drag washers like in your other video. Thanks again, you are a star.

    Great review but i don't understand why many people who do reel disassembly videos don't also take apart the bail arm...

    • @TheFishingHobby
      @TheFishingHobby  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I can tell you why I don't and I'd suspect others feel the same way about it. With decent quality reels, they are all so similar that it doesn't make a lot of sense to disassemble it. I rarely disassemble one even during routine maintenance. Vintage reels (ones that were made to where you couldn't close the bail manually) had to be cleaned regularly, but modern reels usually don't need the bail to be disassembled . They are enclosed well enough to keep dirt out for the most part. I suppose some people may occasionally wear out a return spring and need to replace it, but I never have personally. I think the return springs hold up better on modern reels than the old reels is because they use compression springs instead of torsion springs. The closer tolerances of the enclosures of modern bail arms keep more dirt out of them.

  • @laughlan22

    do you think it worth the 2-3 bucks to replace the RHS plastic bushing ?

    • @TheFishingHobby
      @TheFishingHobby  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Not really. I don't actually dislike plastic bushings unless I feel like they may be dragging a bit too much (like some older reels do). This one feels smooth for this price point and it isn't too freewheeling which can be a problem too occasionally in my personal opinion. I would recommend trying it out yourself first. You may run into shim washer issues (because there were a few on my main drive gear) if there is a slight difference between the plastic bushing and ball bearing thickness. If you want to do the upgrade, you may buy some extra shim washers just in case you need them.

    • @TheFishingHobby
      @TheFishingHobby  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Probably so, but I don't know 100% for sure. You can measure the bushing like I show in this video and order the size bearing you need: th-cam.com/video/2wfTREc_nUA/w-d-xo.html
      When searching for the bearing they usually list the inside diameter first followed by the outside diameter and then the thickness. For example 7mm x 14mm x 3.5mm would be a size listing for a bearing with a 7mm hole, 14mm outside diameter and a 3.5mm thickness. The measuring device in the video is called a digital calliper.

    The more bearings the reel has the quicker the reel will loose its smoothness over time due to grit and grime getting into the bearings over time. A 2 or 3 bearing spinning reel is all a person really needs. I had an old Shimano Sienna 2000FA for 7+ years and that reel was second to none. Caught a few 5 pound rainbows with the small Sienna 2000FA and never had to grease the reel either. I think that is when Shimano reels were still made in Japan. Today the budget Shimano FX series reels are still pretty good but the plastic chrome butt cap is really prone to breaking if the reel is accidentally dropped as most reels today come from the same manufacturing company (cut production costs) out of China which explains why all spinning reels look pretty much identical today. Otherwise the Shimano FX/FC are excellent low budget reels!

    Rear drag is all that. Look at the zebco cardinal reels that not only were well made, but very popular because of the rear drag. There are a lot of high quality reels that have only bearing surfaces and as long as they are properly maintained will last many generations.

    • @TheFishingHobby
      @TheFishingHobby  11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I personally like rear drag, but the general market trend is dominated by front drag reels. The Abu Garcia/Zebco Cardinals were definitely some of the best reels ever made.

      Just looking at the specs, the Daiwa has a slightly higher gear ratio (5.2:1 for the Daiwa vs 5.0:1 for the Shimano. The Daiwa has more available drag pressure (11lbs max vs 7lbs max).
