Yeah, man. It just seems like a bit of a weird one to me. On one hand, as mentioned above, its influence on Melodic Death Metal was undeniable… However, that helps cement it as overrated to me, because EVERYBODY loved it and tried to replicate it. It’s half a great album and half a tedious album. Being the cynic that I am, saying that it’s perfect in 2023 makes me assume that their prior work has been buried, covered with dirt and ignored. Obviously, that isn’t always the case, however. It’s a matter of preference I guess. I can’t decide if ‘Slaughter…’ was just really well promoted, which is why it broke through to so many people who would eventually create similar music, or if it genuinely was loved by the underground for what it was. I wasn’t born then, so I can’t comment. Interesting to speculate, though. 🤣
@@Altars_of_Mattness i also was not born around then so cannot comment on its release. it was my first exposure to melodic death metal and i was not overly impressed despite being told of its importance and significance in the metal scene, then i got into carcass which really got me loving melodic death metal. however i am a big fan of at the gates’ more recent releases they pack a way bigger punch for me. great video though! subscribed.
The band itself considers that the previous works had an immature composition, without focus and with stacked riffs, they tried to be more assertive with SOTS, tried to make something more cohesive and without any excess fat. The album gained a dynamic that pleased the audience's ears, the riffs were great and at the time that production sound also attracted a lot of attention. I remember.
Agree about Individual Thought Patterns. First four Death albums are where it's at for me. Symbolic has some good moments, but I don't dig proggy stuff in general.
I agree with a lot of these. I still have my Spectral album but this one never really hit it with me. My Northern Chaos Gods CD is still sitting sealed and same with my Clandestine lol! I just keep playing my Left Hand Path record. Love some Blood Incantation. Great band and that Frozen Soul is quite good. I didnt bother buying that Carcass record.. the lame minimal cover art alone put me off. The Gatecreeper record never connected with me much either. Great run down man!
Hype and overpriced albums do a lot of them in for me. A few of these I've never heard so can't comment. Torn Arteries I thought was pretty bland compared to the hype and end of year lists but it has grown on me since. I'd have to have a pretty big list to include Clandestine as an all time best. Was let down a bit by that Gatecreeper album by the time I got it. Individual Thought Patterns is my favourite but mainly because of nostalgia. 🍻
Can something be overrated and underrated at the same time. Into the Pandemonium' by Celtic Frost. It's innovative in that it could have created a few more genres for them but the hype sorta overwhelmed the imput.
Interesting opinion about Death! I personally love Human and Symbolic, but it seems like you're more of a Scream Bloody Gore/Leprosy fan, and that's ok! Leprosy DOES have Pull The Plug on it, so it has that going for it. And I agree with your At The Gates pick. Slaughter of the Soul is soooooooooo overrated! I'm rather a big fan of ATG's debut album The Red in the Sky is Ours and I wish more melodeath sounded like that record (only Intestine Baalism, The Crown's debut album, Dungeon Serpent and Merciless come close).
I was disappointed I didn’t mention the vocals when I’d finished, but there was no chance I was going back and starting again 🤣 They’re more like hardcore yells than Death growls. After L.G. Petrov, the next guy was always in with a tough job, but yeah, disappointing!

I love Entombed’s death n roll sound on Wolverine Blues but lots of metalheads like to shat on that one! Matt briefly referred to that so I know where he stands 🤣 Left Hand Path is great, Clandestine is decent but Wolverine Blues would be my favourite Entombed album 😂
I think it's overrated in a sense that people genuinely believe it's better than Left Hand Path, and that's quite mind-blowing. I genuinely believe most people say it to be a contrarian. It's still a classic, but I don't understand people saying it's their best 🤷

You named both of my favourites at the end there. With a gun held to my head I’d probably say Diabolical Fullmoon Mysticism, but those two are fairly interchangeable for me. Their debut is pure Bathory worship and I find it hard not to love it! As for ‘Altars…’, I see where you’re coming from, however I just think Morbid Angel is one of those bands where they have a whole heap of great records, and you could pick any of them as your favourite. ‘Altars…’ or ‘Blessed…’ for me, every day of the week, with Covenant close behind
Did you not listen to the 2nd Frozen Soul album last year? I thought the debut was at least an 8/10. The 2nd was a massive downgrade and was way more overrated.

Agree with a lot of your picks I only bought Immortal because of discography completion was 50/50 about buying it, love all era Death (Leprosy and Human my favourites) but I personally think they're overrated and Blood Incantation too which I also enjoy 😜 as for Entombed - Clandestine I'd take that over the debut any day 🤣🤣🤣 I try not to get caught up in hype and sometimes I wait until the hype dies down then check it out 🤣
I just bought Immortal because I was curious, and I wasn’t necessarily disappointed, but I wasn’t overwhelmed. That’s fair, man. Death and At the Gates were always going to be contentious inclusions, but I’m pleased I got that off my chest 🤣 I wish I enjoyed Death’s later work more to be honest. Really? That’s a bit of a hot take there, sir! 😄 Clandestine does very little for me, unfortunately. I’ll just buy what I like, then if it becomes popular, then great. Digitally I’ll give something my time based on hype, costs me nothing except a couple of black hairs if I end up hating it! Haha!
95% of the death metal I consume is Death (RIP chuck 😭), but other than The Philosopher (which I love, that bass slaps hard), I don't really listen to ITP. My favorite is definitely Symbolic, what a killer album, and TSOP comes in second (yes, I'm a proggy guy), but I always appreciate some classics from early times like Pull the Plug, Leprosy, Evil Dead, etc.
Have not noticed any hype of the last Immortal album, but maybe I have missed it. I think it is a great album. Spectral Wound, did not even buy it, so agree that it was a over hyped album. I think Blood Incantation deserved all the praise for that album, a absolute banger. With you on At The Gates, great album, but not close to the early material. The first Abbath is my least favorite, it was actually planned to be a Immortal album, but then things went sideways in that camp.......... Interesting video. Cheers.
The immortal hype was mainly when it first came out, it’s definitely died since then once everyone realised it wasn’t as good as they had initially thought. Slaughter of the Soul never did anything for me. No eerie atmosphere, no dark depth to it, lack of punch, and even almost mechanical sounding for a 90s album. I don't dismiss it wholly but it never clicked and never will, simply put. Let me go back to the Grotesque days (In the Embrace of Evil) days instead.

Aside from Death and Entombed, which I couldn’t disagree with more. They’re hyped, of course. However, sometimes there is a justifiable reason behind it. Those being two of them. Entombed as a band could certainly be considered overrated, as they only really released one 10/10 album, Death not so much.

but not Frozen Soul. one of the best bands on that label and one of the best modern DM bands out there.

I find it’s 50% great, 50% meh. Absolutely love Grotesque’s sound. Shame they didn’t record very much!
