hey leah, you're probably not going to see this, but I was wondering, my native language is written from right to left, as opposed to english which is left to right. and I was wondering, if a person who writes in both of these languages has a slant, what slant is it? a forward slant or a back slant? since it's technically forward in one of then but also back in the other.

On light pressure and maybe lack of willpower/strenght: I had a professor in middle school, she wrote so so lightly. Her black pen was gray and nearly invisible.
Her ability of gaining and keeping attention from a group of 25 12 yo students was zero. In her hours the class made a mess, yelled, never paid attention and even tests were graded with a fear of rebellion. I believe she had not the "personal strenght" to keep quiet a class, and I felt bad for her.
Edit: I had a classmate that had an awful writing, his cursive was impossible to read (sometimes he himself struggled with it, we classmates tried sometimes, one of the most tiny and illegible thing I've ever seen).
One teacher was so desperate that asked him to write tests all in uppercase, that was barely legible (we're asked to write in all cursive or lowercase since third grade), and ask him to rewrite the sentences he didn't understand. Never downgraded for handwriting, but the struggle was real.

I would find it really interesting how the analysis changes when someone writes a certain way just because they find it pretty. Like I changed some letters deliberately because I find them prettier, so I wonder how that could change a analysis.

i mean the job of like 1st and second grade teacher IS teaching you to write. Like literally make and form letter, my second grade teacher made us follow dotted lines until we knew how to make normal and cursive letter. Not saying she couldn’t have been nicer about it, but it was literally her job. Same goes for teacher who won’t grade illegible papers; I understand handwriting is a expression of your personality, but when your personality makes someone’s already stressful and underpaid job impossible, maybe you can afford to slightly alter it for an assignment which main purpose is to asses a certain skill, not to show to the world you incredibly unique self. In higher level class, you literally loose points for showing personality in an assignment (like in certain types of essay where you need to be objective) so I’m sorry but I just disagree with that opinion.

    • @mewow13
      @mewow13 ปีที่แล้ว +2

@@happyjellycatsquid yeah that's true, she was just doing her job. To me it still was awful tho since I have bad handwriting. Well my handwriting isn't that bad, but compared to a few people who were in my class and even people I know now, it looks pretty bad. I don't get how people can have such beautiful handwriting, I just can't get it to look as perfect as others can. And again you're right, teachers have to teach a ton of kids, who can be really annoying, for a whole 7 hours straight while getting paid poorly. Can't really blame them, but I still think some of them can be a bit nicer

    • @happyjellycatsquid
      @happyjellycatsquid ปีที่แล้ว +5

@@mewow13 No I get it some teachers can be real assholes and need a new job bc they suck, it’s just that on every single subscriber handwriting analysis video of hers I’ve watched the topic of teacher requesting LEGIBLE handwriting on exam is brought up and treated as something super dramatic and cruel and done out of desire to erase students personality when, in fact, correcting assignments can be kind of a pain and it’s impossible when someone’s handwriting is fully illegible. Now I do believe, as someone who also works with young children, that you have to be very careful and nice to developing children trying to master a new skill, because it’s very linked to their ego and confidence in themselves and it can really scar them is you aren’t careful, which your teacher seemed like she was. I just think on this specific chanel they aren’t given enough leeway about doing their already challenging jobs.

9:50 agreed for general reading but you know... I genuinely think teachers have such a hard time decrypting every type of writing to have a clean consciousness about their grading and such that the students should learn to be aware of it and bear that in mind and try to increase their writing's legibility for papers that'll be graded
I know strong feelings run rampant during exams and all but that's a discussion I'd rather have about emotional management
A test has never been about defining a person, it's about defining a persona that the academy is seeing so it's good to think of it that way so that the writing reflects the fake but more readable/well spoken persona
Obviously there is no way, yet, to debunk anyone on anything they believe about personalities and graphology etc etc so this discussion is very low in the bar of credibility but I'm just sharing a perspective because I empathize with certain things more than others

I learned how to write at 6 yo and i was not very good at it(i later on found out it was partly because of psycho-motor issues and got professional help).
My teacher, all throughout the process of me learning how to read and write would humiliate me in front of every one, calling me snail, sludge, and i think it probably affects my relationship with my writing today. I grew up now but im still extremely insecure about my hand writing.

I am a first-time Kindergarten teacher, so of course, I have to teach handwriting. Personally, I am appalled that your teacher did this! I try to be very careful what I say to my kiddos. For example, one student wrote his name rather small and i asked him to write it bigger next time, so I could see it better. I kept it lowkey. My supervisor is much more strict on the handwriting than I would be. I'm more concerned that they remember the shapes, write top to bottom, left to right; mostly because it will help them write better, faster, possibly more legibly. I feel that thier writing will go through lots of changes, and getting hung up on the little details is not too important yet. After all, a few of them are still struggling with their fine motor skills. In fact, I switched to larger pencils, and bought special finger grips for my kiddo that has very shaky writing. (Could be a practice issue, could be physio-psycho, or motor issue. Still waiting to see what happen though the year.) I can't apologize for your teacher, (bad teacher) but that was inappropriate behavior from them. Ps sorry for long post.

From 16-18 my handwriting looked like that last sample. Someone told me it looked like a barcode once and then they were like…yeah I can’t read it. I definitely needed support and was moving a lot, failing school, trying to stay out of the foster care system with a sick single mom… I am glad I found support in time, and if anyone else has a super rigid, ‘barcode’ handwriting, life gets more bearable in time and relationships that support, rather than drain you ARE possible, and you will have them. I had teachers who were irritated by this. One of my teachers is a neat freak, she said she used to be messy like me, but stopped as time went on. She is now trying to force everyone who’s messy to do the same. As a small example, my handwriting is tiny even though my social presence is quite big and I'm naturally very sociable. The reason being is as a kid my teacher told me not to waste paper so I decided to make my handwriting tiny to use the least amount of space on a paper as a possible and therefore use less paper, and, in my child mind, save the environment. That's just as an example of many ways I deliberately made my handwriting the way it is for completely irrelevant reasons.

@@LeahEckardt one strange thing that I noticed about my handwriting is a steep decline in legibility between my 2nd and 3rd grade year and it has remained that way since. I was also taught cursive in 2nd grade, unfortunately I don't have any writing samples from that year as they have been lost to time.

I honestly don't think I've ever seen someone with the same handwriting as mine. But I'm definitely super lazy about it lol. It's like if someone began writing in regular print and then dragged their pencil cause they couldn't be bothered to actually pick it up ig. And I've had people tell me it's almost illegible but like, I can read it so that's all I care about lol. This is an incredibly fascinating subject that I've never really put much thought into before. I love how passionate you are about it too, it's inspiring to say the least

9:09 sinking baselines meaning the hand is giving up makes alot of sense actually with dysgraphia. dysgraphia is a motorskill issue that i'm like- 90% sure i have, and two of the most common traits of it is your writing falling off the line and your hand/wrist cramping up super easily. i never thought about the fatigue and the line falling being connected until you said that.

11:58 it's true, I write like that sometimes and yes I need a lot of support and I have a lot of pressure in my brain, but now I write in messy cursive bcs I feel comfortable with writing in cursive. Writing in cursive made me feel free, ppl think my cursive handwriting is very messy but idk why messy handwriting feels so good and free, it makes me feel relax and when I write in my actual handwriting without any pressure I feel like I can easily express my emotions, I don't care if it's messy but my messy handwriting express my emotions and how I feel about myself without any pressure of being "perfect" :)) btw thanks for making this video, it helps me so much

In Calligraphy, the letters are shaped according to the script style, like a font. There are formal styles, it's not typically a spontaneous creation. The letter shapes, sizes, and connection types are constructed according to the rules of the font. Trying to analyze Calligraphy handwriting is analogous to trying to analyze a sample made with a stencil.

My brother used to write with so much pressure that he literally carved his homework into our dining table 😭 he also threw a washing machine at me
Now he writes just as messily but much more lightly, and he has mellowed out a TON. So I feel like that makes sense.

I'm so lucky my teachers (before computers were usually available in homes) would pull me aside and ask me read to them what they couldn't read, i felt more like they were amused than upset, and it pushed me to be more motivated because there were times even couldn't read it made me realize it was important to me understood too, and i didn't want to have to learn to borrow a typewriter because that would have meant admitting my difficulties to my family. Then the teachers also assigned me more handwriting related homework in the flexible assignments part of the days, so i had the tools for improvement too. It bears saying that in the pre-computer days legibility was much more important to basic functioning in life.

If you want a lot of handwriting videos to analyze -- especially with the writing in the video/post -- you might appreciate looking at fountain pen videos. There's a lot of cursive in those videos (so you might wanna look into the different types of scripts to see what's normal and what isn't) but a lot of those folks have some very interesting letter choices and writing patterns. Plus you could probably do a few collabs

I nearly had a knee jerk reaction every time I heard the "Handwriting check!" "You may get a 0" Because brought up primal panic of when I was in first grade. I was lucky to have teachers after that not get after me about my handwriting afterwards, but boy did it stick with me.
I grew up writing slow due to having weaker hands than the average person. (Apparently when I was born I didn't move my hands much like I was suppose to, so my motar skills weren't that great) I had to literally teach myself to write faster just to keep up normal people, but the legiablity isn't exactly the best when you really look at it. Also super heavy handed due to me needing to force myself to grip my pen/pencil tighter just to keep it from slipping from my hand (but side effect that my hands crap when I write and I brake my machanical pencil led more often than the average person). But one of the reasons why I had to learn to write faster because I was tramatized by my first grade teacher would literally bully me by slamming her hands on either side of me and scream at me to write faster when I was trying to learn my letters. It was a godsend when I learned how to do Cursive and I was able to keep up with the average person with a mixture of print and cursive. So I agree with you that teachers seriously shouldn't make handwriting the "be all, end all" thing they try to push so much. It really does stick with the kid for YEARS even into adult hood. (and while my icon is infact my signature intinals handwritten by me, It's not my usual handwriting due to me actually focusing on the artform of it as an art signature than how I would normally write and I purpously combined the T and M and Y into one letter form, though I guess the loop is normal for me when I do Lowercase Gs, Lowercase Fs, and Losercase Ys)

I personally wrote like my Japanese friends to have the notebooks strait and have my hand at an angle but since my parents didn't approve that and said that I write wrong now I write upside down like one of the videos you showed also I can have my whole body in such uncomfortable position and still write but if I don't write upside down I feel that is wrong and I feel really bad that I can not return to the way I wrote in my first years while I was learning to write :(

This is really interesting, thank you 😊 My writing changes depending on what sort of pen I'm writing with. If I have what I call a 'scratchy' pen, my writing is quite spikey, and if I have a softer pen, my writing is quite circular. Also, if using lined paper, I prefer the more narrowly spaced 5mm lines, rather than the wider 1cm lines. Is that a thing? 🤔 I really enjoy the feeling of pen to fresh paper, preferably the right side of a book or pad. I often just write rubbish because I want to enjoy that feeling 🥰

I wonder how the analysis changes if the person has physical issues. For example I know someone with dysgraphia or where I have hyper mobility which causes me to grip my pen harder and to press on the paper harder to compensate for my joint instability. I feel like if you analyse handwriting without knowing that the analysis would be skewed.

Okay genuine question: what does it mean if my handwriting constantly changes. Normally it’s relatively round and bubbly and sort of connected but other times it’s sharp and almost cursive. Other times it can be super big or super microscopic and can even look like that olden timey cursive people wrote with feathers and ink. I have adhd and autism and have had my fair collection of trauma but seeing someone like you who clearly knows why they’re talking about makes me super curious about why my handwriting changes like it does. I’m also a huge psychology buff (but more into like social connection and human behavior to make up for my lack of understanding social cues) so seeing someone like you with such a very different but intriguing expertise is just piquing my curiosity to the max

Not her calling me a serial killer💀💀
I just like the drama of it all that's why my letters become so tall and reach so deep.
If any my emotions get transferred to all the movement so if I'm trying to express more emotions in my text, everything will be more stretched out,
plus speed -> everything will be very compressed and at that angle.
I once had this super cute teacher who gave me back my assignment and told me he had a hard time reading it and I simply rotated the paper by 40° and it helped a lot with legibility 😂😂
