I always felt that Neagley saw him as a big brother figure. She cares for him on a sibling level. I hope the producers never feed into the 'will they, won't they' game. These two are a dynamic duo as they are.
I think it gives them a real bond. Reacher has never pressed the issue with her. He simply takes her as she is. No touchy ? Cool.
She feels safe and comfortable around him because he’s never tried to “fix” her. He’s never questioned her. He’s never made her feel like there is something wrong with her.
I think that Child just wanted to write a female friend for Reacher without the burden of sexualizing her and used this phobia to reach that goal.

I recall this being part of the books as well. It's just part of her character. I don't remember if it was ever expanded upon in the series but I never felt it needed to be either. Some people just don't like to be touched. For various reasons.
OMG! The producers do not want Neagley to be seen as beautiful, but it's her strong body and respect that makes her very beautiful. In real life, if you saw her walking down the street with that gown on or without it, she would appear beautiful. She is a queen, they Neagley looks at you, her strength, hair pulled back with confidence. OMG!
Maria Sten was Miss Universe Denmark in 2008, so the producers must have known that she's a knockout! They're 'deglamorising' her on purpose.
She’s just as beautiful dressed down, as she would be dressed up. And, I really love the fact, that she doesn’t have to be sexualized to be interesting and appealing. On a side note, I can’t stand how the AI mispronounces the name,“Reacher”

There is a scene in "Without Fail" - Neagley's first appearance in the Reacher saga - late in the book, where Reacher and Neagley are sitting on a hotel bed and she very slowly, an inch at a time, reaches out and takes his hand. They sit like that for a while, then she leaves. Earlier in the book, another woman, who is working with Reacher, observes to him that Neagley is clearly in love with him.
In "Bad Luck and Trouble" - the book - Dixon speculates to Reacher that Neagley might have been abused as a child.

I’ve only seen the first episode thus far, but if Neagley is asexual (“I don’t find anyone attractive”) then she’s an example of good representation. The thing about characters like that (LGBTQ+ characters specifically) is that a lot of writers like making their sexual orientation their entire character.
So if Neagley is asexual, then that’s great. But the fact it doesn’t do anything for the story is even better, because why would it? She’s a character who’s asexual, not an asexual character.
I have a close friend who is a nurse and she is the same way. She truly has to know you for her to let her touch you...... In her case she was abused a child. 😢
I had known her for almost 10 years in my job as a paramedic before she actually told me that.
By the way you should see how Gloria is with kids: she's awesome. She works in the pediatric unit in one of our big hospitals here in town.

I have read every Lee Child Reacher book which I think spans 23 books if not more side and short stories, Neagley is the Female equal, of Reacher and they both know it, I have a female friend I have known and trusted for 30 odd years, who is 1of2 executors of my younger Bro's will, She's my Neagley
As a show only watcher, I haven't noticed any "point" or payoff really. It's just a character quirk. I don't mind it. It adds a little something to her character and presents opportunities for throwaway lines that could be funny or awkward.
However, in Night School, NSA senior Deputy Marian Sinclair notes Neagley's attraction to Reacher, and her refusal to sleep with him. Reacher points out that Neagley has haptephobia, which is a fear of being touched. When Sinclair asks if the condition is as a result of assault, Reacher responds, "She says she was born with it."
Excerpt from a Reacher wiki. I don't read the books and I don't want to go through all of it to see if it adds anything to the story. But bottom line is that is a trait written by the author himself. Whether it serves a purpose or not, you can research I guess.

it happened at some point in season 1 where she didnt want to shake someones hand. i think it happened once and then it was never relevant again. now we got new 3 episodes for season 2 and i have noticed 3 scenes where its mentioned again.
once at the new age technologies where she wont shake the lady's hand.
then in the bar where those guys tried to attack reacher and neagley and she screamed "DONT TOUCH ME" which also seems weirdly forced. obviously nobody wants to get put in a chokehold by a stranger.

Take it up with Lee Child. Neagley is written that way in the books. It would be quite the departure from the source material if she wasn’t written that way in the show.

Without the quirk as a plot device, it would be hard to maintain an organic writing style of the characters while keeping a platonic relationship between her and Reacher.

I don't know why asexuality or unwillingness to touch people would need to DO anything. It's just a part of her personality. If she said her favorite color is purple, it wouldn't add anything to the plot, either.

They're not 'shocking' reasons - the /actual/ reason(s) is (are) never given in the books - the sole canon sources. They're /made up/ reasons for a clickbait video title. The /actual/ reason could range from a germ phobia, to a childhood trauma, or /any/ point in between.
Actually reading the comments about the AI voice makes me suspect this is a bot and the user has just picked up that Reacher is popular.
Sorry but like Reacher says details matter. Reacher the character is 6’5. If you google Ritchson’s height he is 6’3.

The actor is not 6'5", the character "Reacher" is. Alan is only 6'2" tall, so you might notice the camera work. Much of the time he is being shot from below to make him look more imposing and whomever he is having a dialogue with is being shot from above to make that person look smaller.
They couldn't find a bigger actor. But, he's certainly more imposing than Tom Cruise

I liked the scene in the Officer’s Club where Reacher pushes his chair back from the table and slowly stands up. This is intentional as the slow rise out of the chair is intended to emphasize Reacher’s size, especially his height. Note that Reacher stands about 4” taller than the guy who is threatening to “drag them all out on their asses”. I don’t know if the actor (Ritchson) ever stood on an elevated platform to visually enhance his height on camera. I do know that it is rumored that Tom Cruise frequently stands on old wooden Coca Cola crates in scenes where other actors - particularly tall characters - are in scene with him. I think Cruise stands at 5’6” and either he or the production crew don’t want to push a Danny DeVito image.
What was on the receipt that signaled Reacher?
110, 1030. The 110th is Reacher's old military unit, the special investigators. According to Lee Child's books, 1030 is Army MP code for officer in trouble. Neagley made deposits in those amounts to send that message to Reacher, and also provide him with the $ to travel,

It is cool that she has a part typically played by a man. The reliable best friend with the unbreakable bond. I didn't pick up on her condition. I got the vibe she was a lesbian, especially when she helped the stripper in season one. I think they should flesh out her personal life in future seasons. She's a great character.

For the record. Neagly’s history is never really explained in the books, only really hinted at, and as so anyone’s conclusion to she is how she is actually technically correct, but also technically wrong!…… Lee Child , the writer left this for the reader to interpret…….

Lee wrote the two characters as having an understanding and respect for each other and would know what the other would do in tense situations.
It dose look like Neagly is going to appear a lot more in tv than she ever appeared in the books…."which currently is good. All the book readers always want more stories involving Neagly.
