    I cannot tell you just how much this has changed my studying routine! I play a lot of FFXIV in JP, but I've yet to play through the entire game in JP. So I copy and paste the text for each quest as a new Notion note and use your method to read through and sentence mine. I used to get pretty distracted whenever I tried to actively study, and when I'm playing the game in JP I get distracted by...well, the game! lol, but this has finally gotten me to sit down and focus. I've stuck with this for over 2 months now and I just really wanted to thank you!

    I'm a non-native speaker of English, and the way I speak out loud, when I do so in a casual manner, turned out kinda like yours😂. Like, the sentences you speak are totally what I might have said, and some other idiosyncrasies, even the vocal fry.
    Learning through immersion is a hell of a ride. 💁‍♂
    🤣 I never set my foot outside of my home-country and I rarely talk with friends in English out loud, but I do practice talking out loud everyday. So, you know for anyone reading this, keep it up my dudes, language learning can be done just with what you already got on your hands.
    I respect a lot your skillfulness with your Japanese.
    Here's the YOLO manifest, I've carefully crafted for all the my homies:
    I never gave a damn about following any formal method to learn English. I simply unleashed the beast within me and went all out with what I call the YOLO method. It's about surrendering to your cravings and getting high on the language like a freakin' cocaine addict. Set the damn language on all your devices, immerse yourself in it, and search online only in your target language. No more wasting time on other languages. Unless it's absolutely necessary, stick to the language you want to master. And when you do indulge, go balls deep! Binge-watch the hell out of shows like The Breaking Bad and The Walking Dead, or whatever might be of your liking.
    The YOLO method requires you to watch the entire show in the shortest time humanly possible, pushing your body to the limit. And here's the kicker - no subtitles in a language you're already comfortable with. Only the target language. No mental translations allowed, just go with the flow. Don't overthink it, just talk to yourself like a complete maniac in that language. Hell, even think in that language. You need to become one with it.
    But let me be real with you, I'm not sure I can handle that level of intensity all over again with Spanish, Italian, French, Russian, German, Standard Arabic, or Mandarin Chinese. English took a special place in my heart, and I wasn't casual about it. But don't get me wrong, I still take a laid-back approach to expressing myself in it because that's just who I am.
    🤣 Okay, that was a bit weird. It just sounds cringe, but it was fun to write. Btw, comments like this was what helped me learn to write better. So, write lots of comments online in your target language, that's always available and you don't need a friend to write to, although, that's preferable. Those days, you can use a Large Language Model like ChatGPT to help you. Although, be aware that it was optimized for English, and in other languages it might sound strange.

    I was really impressed with your reading. Can I ask how you managed to learn readings after going through RTK? I started the Tango deck back when that was first suggested by Matt but I never got very far into it (personal issues came up that completely derailed my studies). I remember it was pretty hard though bc some of the kanji were completely new to me (never seen them before in RTK) so it felt like brute force memorization. Did you just brute force learn the pronunciations?

    • @LeaflingLearns
      @LeaflingLearns  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Oh thank you! I guess technically yeah brute force, but nothing I do feels very brute or forceful haha. Did you do the 2200 RTK? Or a form of RRTK? I did the Tango deck but yeah otherwise just learn the readings as they come up in the different activities I do. Slowly they start to stick and you start to be able to guess how something is going to be read. I've never like sat down and done drills or actively tried to memorize anything outside of doing Anki sentence cards

    Love this! Quick question: it seems like this method would only work with text you find online (or in an ebook maybe?) that you can copy+paste in. If you read a physical book, do you just skip this method for it or do you type up the whole text? I’m thinking if you have Apple devices you could scan a page and select text from there but I’m not sure how well that would work…
    Either way, thanks so much for sharing, I’m going to try this template out!

    • @LeaflingLearns
      @LeaflingLearns  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I definitely only use this for online (copy/pastable) texts. My methods for reading physical and ebooks is different in that it's really just focused around getting the sentences I want to mine as directly into anki as is possible. I can't feel like it wouldn't be worth all the trouble to get it into notion as well when you already have to go a bit out of your way to get it into anki. With physical books I tend to just write on them in a similar way to how I mark up the articles in notion then only type up which i+1 sentences I want in anki!

    Great video!! I’m new to sentence mining (hehe I just learned about it yesterday) and I want to resume studying German. How would you remember the meaning of a word that you don’t know yet to make it a sentence i+1? Can someone answer my question, please?

    • @LeaflingLearns
      @LeaflingLearns  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      hi wendy, I'm not entirely sure I understand the question so please let me know if my response isn't helpful. i+1 sentences are sentences where you understand all of the words/grammar except 1 word/phrase/grammar point. so when you find a sentence like that, you make a SRS flashcard that has the sentence on the front then on the back is the definition of the 1 part you don't yet know. when you're reviewing flashcards, you pass the card if you understand the meaning of the sentence. does this help?

    • @wendyycm
      @wendyycm 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@LeaflingLearns thank youu this helped me understand more on sentence mining!! However, sorry for my confusing phrasing, what I mean is as a beginner an individual knows very few words in their targeted language. What did you do to remember the meanings/definitions of the most common words, so that way you can eventually be able to mine sentences? Like did you use ANKI to build a deck of the most common words of your targeted language?

    • @LeaflingLearns
      @LeaflingLearns  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@wendyycm oh I see! so my background in Japanese is actually quite long and complicated haha so I came to sentence mining already knowing many words. I think I'd recommend finding a premade deck of Anki sentence cards to start from to start to get some of the basics. If you're using a beginner textbook or online resource, you can also mine the example sentences from that. I did some googling and came across this premade deck - I'm sure there are others, but I hope this helps! ankiweb.net/shared/info/1142217972

      I just looked him up and am trying to compare myself to him, but I think self-perception is always a little (or a lot) off. If you don't mind my asking, what reminded you of him?? Is it how we talk?

      @@LeaflingLearns What I found so funny was that the physical resemblance was accompanied by, what seemed to me to be identical speach rhythms, and body movements and gestures. You probably won't see it, because the brain is wired to see difference. But ask someone who knows you what they think. Mind you, I have been told before my mental pattern recognition software is over-sensitive.
