  • Today we look at the production and transcription of vowelsin English with respect to height, frontness, tense, and roundedness. There is a lot in this video, and there is no way you can grasp it all in one go. Please take the time to study the IPA chart, and do your own practice transcriptions.

Great video series. One thing I noticed when revisiting this topic that might be worth mentioning is that in your examples of "adore" and "inquire" you transcribe them with an ɹ̠ but in some dialects such as Received Pronunciation the speaker doesn't pronounce the rs in these cases (unless the next word begins with a vowel).

Awesome. I just had my Phonetics exams last week, wish that would have been up before then (I still got some of the stuff better after watching your Phonology series). Oh well, future generations always have it easier. ;)
Would you consider doing a series about grammar analysis/language typology (derivational morphology, lexical categories, diatheses, argument realization etc.)? This is something which I have a bit of difficulty with.

This video really reveals how different the various English accents are. You say [ədor] (inverse r) I say [əˈdɔr] (superscript r), standard UK says [əˈdɔːr] (super script r] not to speak of inquire... neither it’s the first time I’ve ever seen or heard ŋ. But UK and TT English say [ɪnˈkwaɪər] (superscript r). Also late .... both US and UK say [ˈleɪt] but I’ve always said [let] maybe that one is due to my french though.

could the last syllable of "clinical" be written [kl] in ipa, with now schwa? similarly to your example of "attention" in which there's no schwa but a syllabic consonant at the end? because when I pronounce the word, I'm really not hearing the schwa or any sort of vowel sound come through

I am confused! I thought inquire is /inˈkwīr/.Is this because of my Amercian dialect?
