You say 5 cities 1000 bc is a bench mark you go for. What are some other goals you try to hit?

Civil service 1ad, writing 1000bc, aesthetics or code of laws 600bc in normal tech trade games to trade for alphabet.
The five cities should be focused on grabbing contested spots with a few others for backfill later but delay as long as possible until alphabet to not cripple tech date. If you can't get more than 5 it's time for the catapults.
600-800ad lib is a good goal, but can delay up to 1000ad on lower levels and even slow immortal games.
Learn when wonders go on your level and have deadlines to build those e.g 1300bc mids GLH, 1ad mausoleum 300bc great library 1800bc oracle
