I'm sure someone else already mentioned it, but it is possible to get the 1-Up achievement without assist mode! The trick is to constantly jump and never stay on the ground for more than a few frames. This prevents the strawberries from collecting, and allows you to create the chain necessary to get the 1-Up~ Edit: for what it's worth, I also want to mention. Just as the game tells you, the purpose of Assist mode *is* for those people who aren't capable of playing the game normally. There are some people who are really young, or physically disabled in some way, or old enough to the point where they don't have the motor skills that they used to. Assist mode is for them. And it wouldn't be fair if achievements would be barred to those people. Assist mode is meant to be an accessibility option. The people who use Assist mode to beat the game are still supposed to feel proud of their achievements. But Assist mode does have a second purpose. It can be used by those who aren't physically incapable of playing, but are just struggling to the point of no longer having fun. Making the game a little easier gives them a chance to improve their skills at a rate more comfortable to them. I'd like to point to one individual in particular who got Farewell Golden using Assist mode to set the in-game speed to 0.7x. Later on, they were able to do the accomplishment again without Assist mode, which is incredible. So it really wouldn't be fair to make Assist mode a permanent stain on the save file. Celeste is meant to be inclusive to gamers of all skill levels. And to that end, such changes to Assist mode would work against that.
Yeah that's true but insanely tricky that being said after some of those B & C sides, it's just another challenge to overcome. I don't actually have anything against Assist mode I think it's a great tool for accessibility. I agree that Assist mode makes the game inclusive and think that's great for beating the story and experiencing the game, but I do think 100% should be somewhat exclusive but at the end of the day that's just my opinion.
i chose to use assist mode on only one occasion, which was the infamous comb room. even then i only set it to 90% game speed but it was such a great help because it gave me that sliver of extra time i needed to make the correct set of inputs. i'm convinced that was the one single room that caused at least a quarter of my deaths on ch. 9 but i'm so grateful for assist mode, since there is every chance i could have not finished that room at all.

I only used assist mode to goof off after beating all B and C sides (I did beat farewell with the moon berry too) And if I have to say anything, don’t give up. Even if Celeste is beating you down, you can always get back up

I absolutely understand what you mean. When I first started working on Farewell, Chapter 9, the first couple of screens were awful. I wasn't skilled enough to do this - and I knew it. So I turned on Assist Mode. I said it was because I wanted to see the story - and while that was true, it made me feel so much less accomplished than the chapters previously had. I reached the roadblock about halfway through the chapter - it requires a lot of crystal hearts, from all A and B sides of chapters 1-8. That's when I realized that this wasn't how I wanted to get through this game. So here I am, with every B-side beaten except for Chapter 8, and almost ready to re-enter Farewell. Gaining the skill and persevering is so much better than mindlessly using Assist Mode, and I can confidently say that my 90+ hours in this game have all been well-spent.
Yes exactly right like what's the point of taking on a challenge if not to rise above it? It's a hollow feeling and I'm glad you went back and got that great feeling of satisfaction!
The point of Celeste is overcoming challenges and attaining growth. Assist mode allows those who just cant seem to overcome obstacles at that current moment in time the chance to still reach the summit, and to hopefully revisit when they have the ability to and try it without assist mode. You arent a cheater for using it, nor should you have felt bad for using it, it is an intended way to play the game, even if it is discouraged by the devs. You still went back and played it again without assist mode to complete it in a fraction of your first time and a fraction of your first run's deaths, and to me, that means you overcame challenges and difficulties and grew. Great video, glad you came back to this gem. Its worth climbing every now and again
Well said that is 100% the point of the game! I think I feel bad because in my view I misused the tool. Instead of taking that time, I just cut my experience short. The steady improvement over the course of the experience that is this game is what it’s all about. You can climb the mountain if you want to put in the effort. There are so many different barriers to cross too, it really is quite amazing. First you have beating the game, all the b sides and c sides, all the strawberries and little secrets, and chapter 9. Once all of that is done then another challenge of the golden berries opens up. 140 hours or so in and I’ve only got 3 golden berries left to get. If you keep trying you really can accomplish any challenges set your way. I think that message is really beautiful and truly something else to experience first hand.
This was a very interesting video. As someone with almost 400h in the game, all achivements and has done half of the game golden berries, i see assist mode as a tool. Yeah you can use it to cheat, but u can also use it to practice and to improve at your own pace. I also think that in your case it helped you see that achivments without the struggle mean nothing. So i genuinely belive that it shoudn't be removed. As for the feeling of not beeing able to acomplish something i feel you, rn im playing Monikas D sides (its a celeste mod look it up its really cool) and i was stuck for over a month on the last screen of 7D, i genuinely thought that i wasn't able to do it, but after 10h (on that screen alone, the whole level took me 28h and 8751 deaths) i beat it. Never beat yourself up for not being able to do something. With enough effort and time u can achive anything, it may take u longer than other people, but as long as u dont give up, u can o it.
First off, congratulations on your 100% and good luck on the golden berries I know you can do it! Secondly that's a really interesting perspective I never really thought about it like that, but your right assist mode reinforced what achievements mean to me and also how I want to collect them. I don't necessarily want assist mode gone, but I wish there was a way to distinguish my 100% and the folks who did it without assist mode because they don't seem equal to me but I totally get where you're coming from. This is exactly why I was able to beat bloodbath in geometry dash, and am currently working on celeste 100% as my first ever. Giving up and cheating just makes things so much less worth, because the more pain you feel the better the relief is when you did it
Maddy's vision for this game was to go through such insanity that the feeling of completing it beats everything else. She wanted it to be a game about overcoming something, which goes hand in hand with the story and THAT is exactly what I love about Celeste.

Im a little late to this but I'd just like to say that you can absolutely 100% this with enough dedication! This is in my opinion a game with one of the best difficulty curves, you will die , but you will improve and while 7-b initially looks ompossible, it becomes doable after the other b-sides for example. Its really fascinating for me personally to see how much better i have gotten by doing goldens now, I've teached far bryond what i thought i was capable of and i believe anyone can
Yeah I definitely played it in the wrong order lol I should've done campaign then B sides. One day I'll return to the mountain I just need the right idea to justify it, you know?

This game has been the most fun I've ever had since I got it a few months ago, and I wish other people the enjoyment I got out of it (especially chapter 9/farewell, such an experience). Just one more tip, you will encounter a crystal heart barrier requiring almost all B-sides in farewell. I'd also do the C-sides before advancing past that point.

I really like the coming back to the game eventually and starting up a new file to beat the game on and seeing how much better you are now. That was what lead me to finally 100%ing it. It's really satisfying to see your improvement so tangibly. I did it with the base game, and then went through all the B sides on those saves before I finally tried to 100% it on my main save. I felt my frustration ease up in the place I previously quit to the point it was now manageable. These days I'll sometimes boot up Celeste and decide to just go through it as quick as I can just for fun. Ended up buying it the game again on steam when I felt like 100%ing the game again just so I could collect all the achievements after doing it in my DRM free copy haha I wouldn't worry so much about stolen achievement valor or anything though. Your achievement collection is personal and you're always gonna feel as good as the effort you put in to each game. Some people definitely just like to watch that funny number grow as much as they can by whatever means possible and I say enjoy if that brings you joy. Everyone's aware of the effort they put into each achievement, they know which ones bring them the most pride. Some people just don't care about effort at all and take more joy in cheating their way into the biggest collection they can, but that shouldn't take away from your pride in your personal achievements.
Yeah, I hear you maybe someday I'll come back to it but honestly don't have any plans to do so right now I'm focusing on other games. Congratulations on your 100% do! I get what you're saying I think my disappointment is that it could've been something I was really proud of, but now I have it and didn't earn it. It's kinda like a personal black spot on my record that being said I've 100% 42 other games on Xbox some of them I'm immensely proud of so I don't think it spoils my account as a whole.
Getting the moon berry with no assist mode is so far the most satisfying achievement I have EVER achieved. There is no better feeling than finally getting that stupid berry.
This channel is criminally underrated another game I recommend you try to 100% is Hollow Knight yes its only very challenging especially a few of the achievements but most of them you get from just playing the game normally And it only requires at least 2 playthroughs to get every achievement

Hey! Randomly found your video, and it was pretty great, really liked it! I have over 300 hours in Celeste, and I’m currently aiming for the 202 (missing only farewell). I was lucky to not give up and use assist mode, cause I did something akin to it with another game series before. The earlier games were on simulators, and I abused save states to get through them. And while it was nice, when I got to the ones on windows, I had that crutch taken away from me. Beating those took me weeks, but they were so much more satisfying, I remember the feeling to this day. I guess that experience was what made me persevere, but it’s really awesome how you managed to explain it so well in this video! I hope anyone who watched this will remember it the next time they’re at the border of losing hope in a challenge. Even if you struggle a LOT, in the end, you’ll probably be happier ;) Great video, props to you!

as a speedrunner that 100%ed the game without ever touching assist (except some goofy assist% runs) assist mode achievements are literally the only thing i dont like about this game

Yeah, I don't like how it appears that we both 100%ed the game to the outside viewer looking in but only one of us did so legitimately I feel that it almost diminishes the overall accomplishment. Like you said though the game is absolutely tremendous just a small nitpick on a great game!
the 8-10 hours to get all achievements is "technically" not wrong for an experienced player that has played the game for a while (I did it on the PS5 at around 7 hours, but that's including clearing Farewell, which is its own achievement in Steam). Casual players take about 8-10 hours to even get to the Summit, let alone 100% it. The argument to be had about Assist mode still giving achievements is kinda hard to go against when there are actual people that do put in the work but just can't get past that one room in a map, and also those that just can't do it due to disabilities. Assist mode is supposed to be used as a last last resort for able players when they just cannot do one room for the life of them (and that tends to be the final screen of Summit C side). I'm happy I used Assist mode sparingly, only using it as a helper tool to teach me each room as best I can instead of pretty much cheating all the way. It just depends on how you use it. If you use it to fly through rooms at lightning speed, it's up to you to think that's satisfying. They did warn you.
I think it's because you can blast through it with assist mode, but honestly I'm not sure how they arrived at that number. It's definitely tricky because you want everyone to be able to enjoy the game and for everyone that's a little different I guess. I just know I didn't feel good about how I used it, but like you said I was warned.
Hey, this is a nice video :) I really love this game and I sincerely don't think you should blame yourself for using the assist mode to get all the achievements and get the 100%. Of course, assist mode kinda takes away the magic of the game and the weight of the achievement, but it's natural for humans to want to get somewhere not everyone is able to get, even if it means to use some kind of easy way. Also, some people simply don't want to keep trying the same thing over and over again because it's VERY frustrating, or they even don't have the time to do so. If you really think you shouldn't be proud of yourself for taking the easy way, you can always try again and do it the right way this time, putting a lot of effort in getting better and finally understand the felling of doing something most people give up is surreal. I got all the strawberries and 24 of the 25 golden strawberries (the farewell one is taking me a while, it's REALLY HARD), and it took me a lot of time, I think I had 450 hours on steam at the time and it wasn't easy as you can tell on your own experience, but I really can't describe with words how I felt when I did this. I still play the game to this day, I currently have 1065 hours on steam and I speedrun any% (my PB is 31:07.824) :) Just wanted to share what I think about this matter, if I wrote something in a way that is hard to understand please let me know (english isn't my native language)
I appreciate that and I can still get some sleep at night, so all is good there but it's definitely something I'm not proud of. I currently don't have plans to come back to the mountain, but I haven't ruled it out either so maybe someday. I just want to showcase other games and am currently working on my next video. It took me more over 15k deaths to 100% celeste. I didnt even know assist mode existed. But when i found out about it, I was just kind of disapointed. The achievements i earned became worthless for me. I still love the and even picked up some moded maps since, but the feeling is still there, that some ppl just didnt put in the hours and got the same piece of the pie. Good video
Your experience is exactly why I want one achievement you can't get with assist mode like what you and I did isn't the same and we shouldn't both have 100%. Awesome job doing it the right way and even though there may be some cheaters like me you did it the right way and should still be proud of that!
Assist Mode is there for those who the base game isn't accessible to. It's supposed to help those who struggle with it more than the average player and can't avoid that struggle even after long, arduous hours of gameplay. You were once that kind of player, the type of player Assist Mode was meant for. Then, you grew out of it. Assist Mode fulfilled the purpose it was made for. To say everyone should ditch it is not a good idea, especially if Celeste is one of someone's first video games. And for those who already have plenty of experience with the game, Assist Mode can be used to learn new tricks and techniques, or to find secrets hidden in the game that are difficult or impossible to access through normal gameplay, among other things. It's not a baby mode. It's a tool. A tool for taking your first steps in uncharted territory. A tool for second chances. A tool for ease of access. A tool for exploration. If used wisely, it can amplify the experience for many kinds of players, if not all. So don't brush it off as a detriment to the experience. Embrace it as part of the journey.
I'm not against assist mode because you're right it is a tool that enhances the game and gives people the freedom to play their way. Though I will say I still feel like there should be one achievement you can only get without it for all the players who didn't end up using it like I did.
I loved Celeste. It was one of my favorite games. Then came the final DLC chapter, Farewell. It was...or rather is...exponentially more difficult than the previous ones. I didn't even get to the part where you have to learn new tech by following a shadow across a wall. I got fed up, and gave up. And it always bugged me. But then I remembered Assist Mode. I wasn't going for any achievements, (the game is on my Switch anyways,) what could it hurt? At least then I could see the story. But the more I thought about it, the more I decided against it. It went against the entire spirit of the game to do so. Farewell, and it's story, wasn't /for/ me. And that's okay. And you know what? I still love Celeste. It's still one of my favorite games, and will forever cherish the time I had with it.

Great vid but I feel like the message is kinda weird because even though the sense of satisfaction is normally better if you do it the harder way there are people that will abandon the game like you did but they wont come back and if they have more fun with a bit (or a lot) of assist then thats what they should do. The mentality of the celeste community is really based around just doing what lets you have more fun with the game and this video feels more like the gatekeeping mentality that games like dark souls have. Still great narrative and hope you can get the most enjoyment out of this game as posible.
I don't dislike assist mode because you're right this game has a great story with an even better message and people should be able to experience that. That being said, I do still think you shouldn't be able to get all the achievements with it because what I did isn't equivalent to what the people who 100% this game legit did, yet we still have the same amount of points. That being said, it's just my opinion, and I'm not the one who gets to decide if it's right or not.
@@SgtDutch436 I think the reason they made it that way was because they didn't want to rob someone of achievements because they needed more time to think and used unlimited stamina, or slowed down the gamespeed to 90% or whatever. I wasn't aware that you can remove the assist mode marker. That seems kinda weird but the rest makes sense.

I get why it's there and why people use it I'm one of them who did, but at the end of the day you either did it or didn't do it, you know? That's why I feel strongly because I didn't do it in the way I feel I should have. But that's just my two cents, if people feel a sense of accomplishment from using it who am i to say its invalid. Yeah, you just exit assist mode and it goes away definitely kinda strange.
I just beat all the A, B and C sides and man its so satisfying to have finally done it. Took me about 40 hours and around 4500 deaths and thats by far the most dedication to a game i've had in months. Celeste just really clicked with me in a way I would never have expected and I hope that someday you will return to this game to beat it all because if you can push through the grind you'll find it very rewarding. edit: wait are you dutch?

celeste was my first ever skill based game. I love indies, and I bought it a few years ago because i liked the music and people around me seemed to be genuinely amazed by it. it sat on my desktop for about three years. don't get me wrong, I tried to come back, but kept dying on the very first set of levels so many times I just thought that someone like me, a filthy casual, isn't capable of beating the game. then, a few years later, I failed my uni entrance exams, as you can guess, I was um.. crushed? yup, pretty much crushed. I had to wait a whole year because of my frankly stupid mistakes and a lack of dedication, but I didn't need that much time to prepare, I didn't need time at all since I thought that "someone like me would never be able to live a normal adult life anyway", I just played games. In an effort to complete my (90% narrative) backlog, I did everything to ignore celeste because it was.. well, the same kind of sore spot I was playing 24/7 just not to think about. and then it was the only one left... I thought to myself, it's just a game, a good one at that, so I'll do it for the story. and.. then I sat there, for 40 hours, just beating the main game for the first time without assistance since that felt like undermining the creators' intent. that's why I don't understand a lot of people's frustration about dying a couple hundred times per level on their first playthrough since I died thousands of times, yes, even on the easiest of levels. and by the end of the game I had finally proven to myself that I do have what it takes to succeed at a difficult challenge, and I learned from Madeline's brilliant story that negativity is just that, an indication of one's discomfort, it shouldn't be ignored, and fighting it will only make things worse, instead it's better to face it and stop running from your emotions that make the very tasks at hand seem impossible. only by working with my other side did I beat the game, come back to collect all the main game strawberries, and then go on to beat all the B sides. I didn't go any further, since mastering certain moves required a lot of time, and I needed to get myself back on track with my exams with that (but i do intend to return later, hehe). All this to say.. my uni problem wasn't hard in the first place, it's the shame that I associated with not "doing life perfectly" that was my mountain, but as laughably childish as it is, it was necessary for me to overcome. Your mountain might seem small to others, but it's a necessary journey to take in order to become your best self, playing celeste taught me that. I'm having my exams in a few days and although I'm terrified, I have somewhat of a saying now: if I beat celeste, I can do this. so um.. this game isn't like a cure all, but it meant a lot to me, and I thought I'd share that even though no one will read it, playing it, for lack of a better term, the intended way was one of the most reassuring and rewarding experiences of my life, and I hope it will be just that and more for many in the future

I honestly use this game as a motivator too, Madeline's journey up the mountain and working with herself is incredibly powerful and motivational. I've posted this a couple times but it's true. Everyone has a different line as to what 100% a game is. For me and my channel, it's getting all the achievements, but the reality is everyone has a different line.
That's the trouble right what is completed? It seems to be a different line for everybody. For me and the purposes of this channel, it's all the achievements, but I know my line may be different than others.
Good vid! I actually just recently 100%'d Celeste for the first time after playing on and off since launch. Taking long breaks and just loading up a new save file every year or so was the key for me. I really think only a superhuman could just sit down and go right for 100% lol give it another shot in the future - you'll be surprised how far you can get!
I concur; I 100%'d, and started some goldens, on my second save file and after learning some anger management skills. (It's one of my measurable steps as a person that Celeste got me pissed, but now I see no reason for it to upset me, even if goldens can be exhausting.)
I’ve played and gotten 100% in Celeste so many times now that I forget how hard it actually is to do 100%. The first 10000 deaths I had in celeste were all in a vanilla save file while doing 100%, the next 150000 deaths came from modding. Because of that I feel like celeste isn’t even hard anymore, but this video helped me see just how much people struggle to beat celeste. I hate to say this, but I didn’t really have any trouble beating celeste, even the b-sides didn’t give me much trouble. I beat all the A-sides in ~8 hours and went to farewell, where all my skill seemed to be gone. I barely made it halfway through, I skipped the heartwall, and honestly that was a mistake. Eventually I assisted to the end, but I felt really bad so I did the same thing as you, I did all the b-sides and c-sides before finally beating farewell once and for all. Now I just play modded celeste which is a lot harder than vanilla by a LOT lmao

i recently 100%’d this game and boy did i love it. took me more than 70 hours, but this game is just too good lol. also, technically getting all achievements is not 100%-ing Celeste, cuz there’s this thing called golden strawberries, but ain’t no way i’m getting those anytime soon. Congrats on getting all the achievements! You bring up an interesting point on the 100% and this is what I'll say about it. Everyone has a different line as what constitutes 100% it varies person to person game to game. For myself and this channel, it's getting all the achievements, but that doesn't necessarily mean that's the only benchmark just my own.
i thought my mans was about to talk about doing the goldens but i guess thats considered 114% anyways idk from my own experience the game is difficult but if you persevere and beat it once it becomes so easy and there are much greater achievements in this game than the c sides or farewell
Nope, no golden's sorry. Everyone has a different marker as to what 100% is, for myself and this channel it's the achievements. It's definitely one of those that you get better and better as you go and what is impossible becomes easy.
I came in here expecting a 100% run... But from the perspective of the players I'm used to watching, meaning the Golden Berries. Now THAT'S a challenge. I have over 300 hours of playtime and I still haven't gotten half of the golden berries. Then again, I'm not good at the game at all and there's probably no reason for anyone to take that much time on such a task, but... I don't know. I'm not usually like this either; I'm never this stubborn about anything. Something about the game and its story just makes me feel like I have to. Somehow, I still believe I could do it. I mean, after all, I did the whole rest of it!! I got all berries, all hearts, all sides, even the moon berry and the 1UP! No assist needed! Everything but the golden berries. They feel so unreachable, even now. Still though... I look back to when I started and then realize that the rest of the game felt exactly the same way. I felt like I would never make it. I feel like that's why I must do it; to prove myself that I *can*, yet once again. If I can do this, I can do anything. So I won't give up. Thanks for sharing your own experience! The honorable thing to do right now would be to 100% Celeste legitimately. But if you had as many issues with it as you did for the A-Sides, you'd be in one hell of a time for the B and C sides, not to mention Farewell.

I have probably 300-350 hours in celseste across my switch and steam, and it’s one of my favorite games ever. I have all 32 steam achievements, but my end goal is to get max percent, or 202 berries. I’m not sure if I’ll ever do that, but it’s something really cool to think about. Farewell and 7B golden berries are terrifying Also, I would really recommend 100% the game normally, it is one of the best experiences I’ve ever had in gaming, and the feeling you get when you collect that final strawberry, or beat 8C or Farewell is amazing

That would work for me or have some way to differentiate those who've done it legitimately. I just don't feel what I've done, and those who have legitimately 100%ed this game is equivalent if that makes sense.
My first playthrough I thought beating the game made me like a pro gamer lol. But then a bit later I decided to 100% the game (no cheats) and it was sooo much harder but really fun. Then I came back again, and started doing modded levels and wow they really mold you into becoming a god cause WOW the base game feels like it’s made for babies now lol
Back when I played the game when it released, left it during core because I couldn't do it. 4 years later, I returned, and found there's ANOTHER level harder than core (Farewell). Back when I played celeste for the first time thought that core and the B sides were impossible (and also all berries). On my return managed to do all B sides and core (when I got to the core I got scared, it's where I failed last time), also discovered the existence of C sides (had no clue about them) and the addition of farewell and wow!, 2 new achievements. I saw things from the C sides and farewell and was an instant "nope, can't do that", but kept playing anyway. Eventually got all 32 achievements (the console versions only have 30 because they can't update the achievements for the 100%, so no farewell and wow!). Also thought that golden berries and the winged golden were impossible for me. Now I've got 2 goldens and the winged golden So, even if it seems impossible, just keep trying, went through the same, thinking I wasn't capable to, and got it by trying and trying, being persisten. You can do this

The C side golden berries are not much harder than the levels themselves. The first two A sides are short and easy, but after this there is a huge difficulty gap, it took me months to get another one. I'm not sure persistence is enough for golden berries, I've personally given up on completing them.
I mostly handled the difficulty curve by going in order to make things as smooth as possible. I beat the game up to chapter 7, got all the collectibles a level at a time, beat chapter 8, started working through all the b sides, and now i'm starting on the c sides. After that I want to do fairwell and then the golden berries. When I got too frustrated to continue I'd replay the game in a new file to see my improvement and it was exhilerating! When that got boring I started speed running any%. I did use assist mode in a few places to slow down the movement so I could learn a room or to get me through a room I genuinely couldnt understand. I even assist skipped an entire b side (8b) because honestly It wasnt fun for me. But I also have the goal of doing a deathless 202 berries run one day (beating the game 100% without dying, doing fairwell 100% without dying, and doing the golden berries) so I know ill be replaying all these levels hundreds of times and most of the things I used assist on before I now know how to do. The best thing about celeste to me is how imediate and obvious improvement is, it remember nearly giving up at chapter three (it took me 8 hours the first time!) Now I speed run it in 15 minutes. And the satisfaction I got from beating 7b was like nothing ive ever felt.
Hey sorry for the late response. That's definitely the smart way to do it! Well it sounds like you used it like an aid not a crutch which makes total sense to me. That's the most insane challenge I've ever heard, and I wish you luck! Sounds like you've come so far already so I know you'll get to the top of the mountain someday! That's true this game definitely rewards grit and dedication which is why you've got so much from it!
I belive only one person has ever done deathless 202 berries. Although, if one person can do it... that definitely means it's achivable, if slightly unhinged in terms of consistency required
I turned on assist mode one time on my main file to get to a hidden secret in chapter six (the game dev room) and then turned it back off again. I felt disappointed in myself so I went back to the room legitimately.
im currently doing celeste, clearing all strawberry, b sides and all (not c side yet cause i havent find how to unlock them). I'm at chapter 7. And i can tell this will be one of my best gamer achievment (along side clearing Galaxy Collapse in Osu mania, being high plat in lol and high plat in brawlhalla and Furi hard mode). Gaming is so much fun.
This is interesting, I definitley think assist mode is good, because it makes sure that everyone who picks up celeste, can at least appreiciate its story, a story that very heavily resonated with me, and I have a hunch, it would for a lot of other people too, but I am currently on my second playthrough, over 500 deaths in, on chapter 2, yikes, but i know what im getting into, it’ll be hard as hell, but i'll do it, eventually, I also am completely blind in the B and C sides, but seeing that you had over 1000 deaths on chapter 2’s B side, scares me, because you seem to be better at Celeste then I am
I don't dislike assist mode for that very reason. The story is great and everyone should be able to see it through. Where I don't think assist mode is good is using it like I did. Well I think it's about getting the muscle memory and getting better as you go. I'd suggest climbing the mountain then going back to the B and C sides personally.
For the same reason I disabled assist mode while playing... Nothing feels earned and there's 0 sense of accomplishment. There was only one time that I enabled it, and it was for the "Wow" achievement, and I immediately regretted it. Beating the B and C sides legitimately is hard but zooming through the levels is also extremely satisfying once you get the hang of it. I especially love Chapter 2 C side with the dream blocks. It's worth the struggle.
That's exactly it and especially in a game that is about overcoming challenges you feel even worse about it. Congrats on getting through the B and C sides that's definitely not easy!
In a game dripping with metaphors I suppose the assist mode is just that, asking for assistance. You reached your goal with ssri, therapy or wheelchair? Still counts. The more I think about it, the more it fits with the themes of Celest.
That's a fair point, and I'm not necessarily against assist mode itself as you've said it makes it accessible to people who otherwise couldn't get through the game. I won't lie, I do think there should still be something special for the people who did it without assist mode, but at the end of the day that's just my opinion and I definitely don't know everything.
I have 2 personal rules for using assist mode : never use it on my main save file, and never use it to gain access to a part of a level I haven't reached on my main save file. Breaking one of these rules would be ruining the game for me, it would remove all sense of progression and challenge. I believe assist mode can be a great tool for people with disabilities and I believe these people have the right to play with this mode without having some special mark on their savefile. Even if there was a mark cheaters could use mods to hide it anyway.
Honestly, pretty solid rules! Yea, good call, as that's exactly what happened with me. I'm not against assist mode for that reason. I just think there should be something for the people who did it without help, is all.

how the hell did you play without collecting every strawberry you saw. they where they just, demanding to be taken. they even make you aware they are their with the beat of their hear drum. every time Isaw one, I got super happy, and everytime I abandoned it, I felt like I failed in some small way. then again, the strawberries added 200 - 300 deaths so maybe I'm just the weird one
"Not everybody can 100% this game, I know I can't", 20 seconds later: "The central theme of this game is that you can do this". I took months to 100% Celeste, and that is counting Chapter 9 and the Moonberry. It was probably the most challenging thing I did in a game, and I tell you this: If you finished the storyline, you CAN 100% this game. The point of the game is that no matter how long it takes, you can overcome any challenge it puts in front of you. You don't NEED to put in the hours to 100% it, but you certainly can. Personally, I think it was unfortunate that you had the intention of 100%ing it since the begining. When I first played, I just did the main story and I was satisfied. Then I saw chapter 8, and started collecting the blue crystal hearts to enter it. After beating chapter 8, I thought I'd just come back to check out the B sides. I don't know if this is accurate, but I get the impression from the video that 3B was the first B side you played, and I think that's probably a major reason why it took you so long and you still couldn't beat it. I first played 1B, it was hard, but I was just checking it out, just having fun, seeing how far I could go, and before I knew it, I reached the end of it. After that, I played each level with a mindset of "can I beat this screen?", but the point is that after each screen you get better and better, and things that would seem impossible before are just barely doable when you actually reached them. You tricked yourself by going to 3B right away. Imagine if somehow you got to chapter 7 right after playing chapter 1, I BET you'd say it was too hard and either abandon the game or use assist mode to go through it, it would be understandable, I probably would do the same. I only considered 100%ing this game after I had gone through most of the C sides, and only decided I'd try to when there was only Chapter 9 left. Where I'm to get is: Consider giving the game another chance, not to 100% it, but just to pass that one screen that's just above your current level, I think that's how the game was intended to be played. The feeling of going from "I'd never be able to do this, but let's see how far I go" to "This is hard, but damn, I thought I'd have quit by now" to "Wait, I'm actually doing it" to "Wtf, I can do it!" to "I f***ing did it!" is one of the best experiences I've ever had.

You're probably right about building up to the completion, but I do have the achievement itch lol That's right, I went right back into 3B after a couple of years, and that's when I used assist mode I think at the very least I should've started at 1-B. As someone who has gotten 100% legitimately, I can say that the challenge and feeling of accomplishment that this game gave me was one of the best gaming experiences I've ever had. Initially, after beating all the chapters (B and C sides included), I decided to try and get the golden berries.i goldened chapters 1 and 2, but was immediately taken down to earth when I realized how daunting it would be to golden anything else, so I decided to use assist mode to get all the other goldens. After that, I didn't quit the game. I had so much fun that I decided to do a few speedruns on the second file, and used variants to replay the entire game in mirror mode In the third file. After that, I left the game, went on vacation, played some other games (dead cells and OMORI, plus a few, less impacting others), and had a great time. A bit over a month or so ago, I decided to go back into Celeste. I got used to the controls and mechanics again, and was surprised as I still had a good bit of muscle memory. Then, I decided to try getting some goldens. In order to stop making this too long, I'll say where I am right now. I have gotten the golden strawberries for chapters 1-5, B-sides 1 and 2, and most importantly, EVERY SINGLE C-SIDE (8C felt miserable to golden, but fun and exciting nevertheless). I have slowed down with the golden attempts, as 6A has proven to be really challenging due to its length, but I hope I get it one day. And I think that'll be where I truly end up leaving the game, unless I get good enough at 7A to attempt goldening it. Anyways, I'm not good at outros, so I'll just say congratulations on climbing the mountain, and you'd be surprised at how far you can push what you may think are your limits.

i dont think assist mode exists just to make the game a walk by but rather to make it more challenging for those who can't complete it. i've never used assist mode so idk what the settings are but as far as i can tell the best way to use it is to make it still challenging but possible. you don't need to feel bad about using it like that because you are still going through the difficulty of the game
You can tailor it and your right that is how it should be used. I get what your saying and don't worry I can still go to sleep at night, but I definitely feel lame for getting 100% like that.
I will say the assist mode tag being temporary is something I personally appreciate. I have beat almost the entirety of the main game (All A,B,C sides and strawberries) and a few golden strawberries with over 15,000 deaths, all without assist mode. However, I made it part of the way through the DLC chapter 9 Farewell sometime during my playthrough and, at a the time, I was more interested in the story. After a large amount of frustration and genuinely losing some enjoyment of the game, I popped on assist mode to beat and see how it ended. I agree that it feels less rewarding and I might at some point go back and do it officially but if I think it would be a little unfair to be slapped with a "you cheated" sticker for what happened. Really good video overall and maybe some kind of achievement to encourage not using assist mode could be good, though I do really like the current system myself

Even tough I have assist mode on, I just used it to mess around in some levels, I never ACTUALLY used it to get through the game, I did make it to the summit, but I have yet to start looking for hearts to play the core and farewell to fully beat this game, but not 100% it (unless I'm really bored one day or something). About the time it takes, for me, it only took me 8 hours to get to the summit with no assit mode. I really wanna play the game again
Everyones line is a bit different as to what is 100%. For the purposes of myself and this channel, it's getting all the achievements, but the reality is that everyone's line is different and it's all subjective.

I'm a very bad gamer, but a very stubborn one. It took me 300+ hours and 10000+ deaths to complete the game too 100%. I even got some golden berries. Not all of them tho
As someone with 201 berries (all but the last chapter deathless + forsaken city dashless) i can definetely say this game is way better with assist disabled

That was so entertaining to watch and I 100% agree!! I absolutely love this game even if I haven't finished it, and with the new achievements totaling it up to 32 on Steam make it look scary, but one of my friends got the moon berry legit so I'm going for it too!
i got all achievements legit, so i can say with confidence that you can do! (i didnt even like to touch assist mode, so i didnt even think about cheating with it) the only thing i didn't feel like getting was the golden berries. deaths became too much of a loss, and i like dying on this game, it never really felt that punishing. but with golden berries, i just feel bad, something celeste never really makes me feel. i'm just glad there isn't any achievements for golden berries, because i'd totally force myself to do them if that was the case. for now, i've gotten a few of them, and whenever i feel like having a challenge with this awesome game again, i go for a try at them, and then close the game in frustration again :)

well, that's endeed is a theme of this game. it was a FIRST platformer I played, in fact. so you might imagine how bad I was. old site first time was like 500 death or th. and I'm still really bad at it, in my opinion (despite me beating farewell). but the thing is, I'm sure that I CAN beat any challenge, it would throw at me. it just would take a metric ton of patience and motivation. that's what this game is meant to conduct to you. and it does a perfect job at it, as you can see. also Maderine is trans, so she might have a giant... motivation or th 😮

I'm glad you liked the video. This was on Xbox, and there were no additional achievements for farewell (for some reason). I didn't know that at the time I was just going off the title card. I'll mention that in my next video, but it definitely wasn't my intention.
@@SgtDutch436 I played Celeste on PC, so I’m not sure if console just didn’t get updated or if your game specifically is out of date, but the current version on PC, the title card and credits list the creator as Maddy, and Farewell has several achievements with it, including a Golden Strawberry 😱

Good job! And don't feel bad about not 100% the game without Assist, it's a difficult game! I recently finished 100% it and I have over 7000 deaths and 37 hours on the game! I didn't use assist for anything (except for 1-up but that one sucks) and it was pretty rewarding. I would say if you ever wanna go back and actually 100% it go through the main game, then chapter 8, then b sides, then c sides, then chapter 9 (farewell). This is what I did and it really helped going easiest to hardest. Great video though! Pretty underrated imo you earned your self a sub though!

I think not enough people try to use assist and quite even when they might had enoyied a fair bit of the game.. you also do not need to crank the cheat to 100% If you feel dirty for not getting archivement legit then this goes very well along the story and messange of the game. You summed this up very nice in the video.
Yeah, I'm definitely not against assist mode as like you said it allows people to complete the game and get to experience the wonderful story they otherwise would've missed. But then you could find points to argue about too hard to get archivments that rune the complishenist mindset expirience. There are always harder chellanges from here to the modding scene to kaizo.. and only a view climb this chellanges and they are not for everyone.

Might be a other fun Video idea. I know a guy who liked to have all of them in a game he loved. He cheated them with cheatEngine and did not feel bad about it a second lol
the only problem this game has for me is that assist mode doesn't disable achievements and that there are no achievements for feats such as all the golden berries. Because of it, the percentage of people who "completed" the game doesn't mean anything really , it takes away it's true value and because there's no achievements for the golden berries then there's less incentive to do it. A lot of these decisions seem to come from a "protecting the players from themselves" kind of perspective where players feel that they "should" complete all achievements but that's not true, they really do not have to as there are no in game unlockables locked behind such accomplishments. I am okay with accessibility but i am not okay with giving the finger to the more dedicated players.
Great video! I completely understand, but I have to say: I played this game 100% without assist mode on. Yes, it felt very rewarding to be able to do, but it was not FUN. It wasn't fun at all. The level design in this game made you repeat so many of the same mechanics over and over and over. It didn't feel like mastering, it felt like monotony. I hated every single hour of this game after the B-sides. I do not recommend any other 100% player picks up this game. It was an awful experience.

I understand what you mean entirely the that's the nice thing about 100% is you get to put it down and there's a sense of finality to it if that makes sense. you should have played first the a side, then the b side, chapter 8 and all the rest. playing b side after the a side in your first playthrough must be a torture lol
I feel like you took the wrong lesson from this experience. Other people's achievements shouldn't matter to you, just your own. The assist mode is there with all its warnings to do its job of allowing people to balance their game to their own abilities. So what if people abuse it for achievements? They're only cheating themselves. That person who truly needed the help though? They deserve that 100% achievement even with assist mode and I would hate for them to be robbed of that. Celeste is one of my favourite games and assist mode is that way I'm able to share it with my dyspraxic partner. For her it's still as hard as it was for me and not the impossibility it would have been without.
I'm definitely not against assist mode, and I do think it should be in the game for people to get to experience the great story of this game. I do I feel that there should be safeguards against completing it 100% with assist mode, but at the end of the day that's just my opinion and people have the right to do whatever they want with the game they paid for. Her name is Maddy! Not uh 8:00. She's trans, that's her deadname! Also the assist mode not disabling achievements is kinda the point. Personally I got them at first with assist and then I used the steam achievement manager to remove the achievements I "cheated" in. Also there's an actual cheat mode that exists that disables achievements.

Assist mode is fine as it is imo, I understand the feeling of accomplishment and all (I've 100%'ed the game without assist mode, I actually didn't know that you can even disable assist mode and remove the icon on your save profile thing lmao) but its also kinda childish to brag about it to others, I treat achievements in games as personal and the ways in which I achieve my 100% are usually at a nice level of difficulty where I feel comfortable, if someone came up to me and said "you got achievement X on the Normal difficulty rather than the Hard difficulty so it doesn't count" I wouldn't care since I had fun doing it and that's that. And realistically if you want the 100% really badly there are some shady ways to get it done, like paying someone to log in to your account and get it for you, or on PC you can use SAM for Steam achievements etc and legitimizing achievements through notions of "honour" and "being skilled" just leads to more of that kind of crappy behaviour and also elitism which is just kinda pointless, like, enjoy game. A personal story to hopefully be a bit more convincing: recently my grandma (87) started playing videogames, I showed her celeste and she really loved it but it was too hard, so we turned on assist mode and turned the game-speed down until she could pass the tutorial, I think that her completing Chapter 1 is just as impressive, if not more, and absolutely deserving of the "complete chapter 1" achievement and I think that this holds for all the achievements she might end up getting, I see no way as to how she hasn't "earned" them or whatever. In the first place if you want to check if someone actually got a difficult achievement or if they're bullshitting you you can ask them to screen-share for like 10 mins and just play, as someone who has played celeste for >100 hours I can immediately see (and I mean absolutely no offense) that your movements are kinda janky and if you told me you beat farewell I would laugh in your face. If its a game I'm not familiar with I can't tell if you're lying to me but at the same time I don't know if the achievement has a 1.2% completion rate because its grindy like the "And Good Riddance!" achievement in Terraria (the percentage is also so low because the achievement came out in a recent-ish update and few returning players have tried to go for it, its really grindy and unfun) or if it has a 4% completion rate because its hard like the "Embrace the Void" achievement in Hollow Knight.
I'm not saying assist mode is bad and I think it's awesome your grandma could get through chapter 1! I get, there are other ways to cheat and am not even saying you shouldn't be able to get most achievements with assist mode I'm just talking about one for the completionist's but at the end of the day it's just my opinion and i am not all knowing lol Thanks for watching the video!
I still don't really like Farewell having story. It's pretty hard even for someone who has experience with frustrating games. Like fuck, that one room with the moving block like halfway into level where you have to time a hyper/wavedash into a wall bounce just to get past the beginning? Fucking one hour, the only room that took me more was the final one, and that's because of how absurdly long it is. Like there's a reason Extra stages in Touhou games are not that much harder than clearing the game on Normal -except the second game but we don't talk about SoEW- and you get nothing but bragging rights for clearing the games on Hard and Lunatic.
I hear what you're saying honestly I didn't even try anything after the summit without assist mode because of that. That is the silver lining with assist mode is that it still lets you experience the story though!
I agree that the achievements should be locked if you use assist mode, but the devs did address this issue. I of course have my own solution, but I'm not them and they chose what they chose.The only reason I know about this is because I'm working on a video about achievements right now. Here's the reply from the devs: It was a conscious decision to allow players in Assist Mode to still unlock achievements. Achievements, for us, are not status symbols, and it would be counter to the philosophy of Celeste to treat them that way. For us, they're a fun way to commemorate your progress. Or in some cases they function like a dare - a "try to figure out how to do this!" from developer to player. We don't think that a player who enjoys Celeste in Assist Mode is playing the game "wrong", or is somehow less deserving of taking part in the achievements system. If you're interested in collecting the achievements we want you to do so in the way that is most fun and rewarding for you, whether that is with or without Assist Mode.
Thank you for sharing that a very interesting perspective thanks for sharing that. I won't lie, a big part of them for me is as a status symbol being one of a small list of gamers who did something challenging, but that's me, the cool thing is there isn't just one answer as the developers of Celeste have shown. When your video is done, I'd love if you could link it very interested to see the final result you've clearly done your research.
@@SgtDutch436 I just made a community post saying that I was done with the script 8743 words or something like that, but in the end, I'm actually STILL working on it. I reread it and found it not to be as organized as I'd like it to be. I'm mainly just copy and pasting, but there are some things I'm still adding to the final final FINAL script. Once this one is done, this will be the final script and I can finally start making the video.

where did they get the 8-10 hours to complete??? thats like how long it took me to re-100% the game when i bought it again on steam, after already having 300 hours of play time on the nintendo switch version. also I do get why you don't want achievements to be obtainable in assist mode, but I also get why devs made them obtainable. This whole game is about personal achievements and overcoming your inner self, and so being able to use assist on your own achievements isnt a big deal imo. If someone still feels accomplished after using assist mode, especially with how hard this game is, then more power to them. This is also why none of the platforms this game is on has achievements for the golden strawberries, it's all meant to be a personal goal that you can set for yourself and choose to overcome at your own pace. this is why only getting all 176 strawberries and all of the crystal hearts is referred to as 100% by the devs and the community while getting all golden berries to get to 202 berries is considered max%. 202 berries is by a technical definition 100% (you have obtained 100% of the collectibles and done everything possible in the game) but it's so incredibly hard that the devs didn't want people who 100% all the games they play to feel forced to do these absurdly difficult golden berries if they didn't want to or didn't feel like it was possible for them to do. It feels like the switch version was the completely intended experience, no achievements to set goals onto players who don't want them, players can just give themselves the goals that they want to. The achievements feel added out of almost necessity just to give 100% players a clearer goal, instead of having them take on the golden berries when they aren't ready for them out of a feeling of not completing the game, instead of taking on the challenge of the golden berries as a personal goal and a test of skill to show how far the player had come in terms of skill ok sorry for the wall of text (if you real all that you're really cool) but I love this game and its deeper meaning :) also also the xbox version never received update 1.4 and that's why there are no achievements for chapter 9 and also why the creators name is wrong
I think they got that from the fact that you can use assist mode to do it, but honestly, I'm not sure how they arrived at that number. I get what you're saying about the game being about working with yourself to achieve a higher goal, and that assist mode helps people do that. I think why I feel strongly about it is that I didn't get to achieve my goal because I used it to take the easy way out. Instead of working with myself to overcome the mountain, it felt like I went back home. But that might just be me. I'm sure someone else already mentioned it, but it is possible to get the 1-Up achievement without assist mode!
The trick is to constantly jump and never stay on the ground for more than a few frames. This prevents the strawberries from collecting, and allows you to create the chain necessary to get the 1-Up~
Edit: for what it's worth, I also want to mention.
Just as the game tells you, the purpose of Assist mode *is* for those people who aren't capable of playing the game normally. There are some people who are really young, or physically disabled in some way, or old enough to the point where they don't have the motor skills that they used to. Assist mode is for them. And it wouldn't be fair if achievements would be barred to those people. Assist mode is meant to be an accessibility option. The people who use Assist mode to beat the game are still supposed to feel proud of their achievements.
But Assist mode does have a second purpose. It can be used by those who aren't physically incapable of playing, but are just struggling to the point of no longer having fun. Making the game a little easier gives them a chance to improve their skills at a rate more comfortable to them.
I'd like to point to one individual in particular who got Farewell Golden using Assist mode to set the in-game speed to 0.7x. Later on, they were able to do the accomplishment again without Assist mode, which is incredible. So it really wouldn't be fair to make Assist mode a permanent stain on the save file.
Celeste is meant to be inclusive to gamers of all skill levels. And to that end, such changes to Assist mode would work against that.
Yeah that's true but insanely tricky that being said after some of those B & C sides, it's just another challenge to overcome. I don't actually have anything against Assist mode I think it's a great tool for accessibility. I agree that Assist mode makes the game inclusive and think that's great for beating the story and experiencing the game, but I do think 100% should be somewhat exclusive but at the end of the day that's just my opinion.
i chose to use assist mode on only one occasion, which was the infamous comb room. even then i only set it to 90% game speed but it was such a great help because it gave me that sliver of extra time i needed to make the correct set of inputs. i'm convinced that was the one single room that caused at least a quarter of my deaths on ch. 9 but i'm so grateful for assist mode, since there is every chance i could have not finished that room at all.

I only used assist mode to goof off after beating all B and C sides (I did beat farewell with the moon berry too)
And if I have to say anything, don’t give up. Even if Celeste is beating you down, you can always get back up

I absolutely understand what you mean. When I first started working on Farewell, Chapter 9, the first couple of screens were awful. I wasn't skilled enough to do this - and I knew it. So I turned on Assist Mode. I said it was because I wanted to see the story - and while that was true, it made me feel so much less accomplished than the chapters previously had. I reached the roadblock about halfway through the chapter - it requires a lot of crystal hearts, from all A and B sides of chapters 1-8. That's when I realized that this wasn't how I wanted to get through this game. So here I am, with every B-side beaten except for Chapter 8, and almost ready to re-enter Farewell. Gaining the skill and persevering is so much better than mindlessly using Assist Mode, and I can confidently say that my 90+ hours in this game have all been well-spent.
Yes exactly right like what's the point of taking on a challenge if not to rise above it? It's a hollow feeling and I'm glad you went back and got that great feeling of satisfaction!

The point of Celeste is overcoming challenges and attaining growth. Assist mode allows those who just cant seem to overcome obstacles at that current moment in time the chance to still reach the summit, and to hopefully revisit when they have the ability to and try it without assist mode. You arent a cheater for using it, nor should you have felt bad for using it, it is an intended way to play the game, even if it is discouraged by the devs. You still went back and played it again without assist mode to complete it in a fraction of your first time and a fraction of your first run's deaths, and to me, that means you overcame challenges and difficulties and grew.

Well said that is 100% the point of the game! I think I feel bad because in my view I misused the tool. Instead of taking that time, I just cut my experience short. The steady improvement over the course of the experience that is this game is what it’s all about. You can climb the mountain if you want to put in the effort. There are so many different barriers to cross too, it really is quite amazing.
First you have beating the game, all the b sides and c sides, all the strawberries and little secrets, and chapter 9. Once all of that is done then another challenge of the golden berries opens up. 140 hours or so in and I’ve only got 3 golden berries left to get. If you keep trying you really can accomplish any challenges set your way. I think that message is really beautiful and truly something else to experience first hand.

This was a very interesting video. As someone with almost 400h in the game, all achivements and has done half of the game golden berries, i see assist mode as a tool. Yeah you can use it to cheat, but u can also use it to practice and to improve at your own pace. I also think that in your case it helped you see that achivments without the struggle mean nothing. So i genuinely belive that it shoudn't be removed.
As for the feeling of not beeing able to acomplish something i feel you, rn im playing Monikas D sides (its a celeste mod look it up its really cool) and i was stuck for over a month on the last screen of 7D, i genuinely thought that i wasn't able to do it, but after 10h (on that screen alone, the whole level took me 28h and 8751 deaths) i beat it. Never beat yourself up for not being able to do something. With enough effort and time u can achive anything, it may take u longer than other people, but as long as u dont give up, u can o it.
First off, congratulations on your 100% and good luck on the golden berries I know you can do it! Secondly that's a really interesting perspective I never really thought about it like that, but your right assist mode reinforced what achievements mean to me and also how I want to collect them. I don't necessarily want assist mode gone, but I wish there was a way to distinguish my 100% and the folks who did it without assist mode because they don't seem equal to me but I totally get where you're coming from. This is exactly why I was able to beat bloodbath in geometry dash, and am currently working on celeste 100% as my first ever. Giving up and cheating just makes things so much less worth, because the more pain you feel the better the relief is when you did it

Im a little late to this but I'd just like to say that you can absolutely 100% this with enough dedication! This is in my opinion a game with one of the best difficulty curves, you will die , but you will improve and while 7-b initially looks ompossible, it becomes doable after the other b-sides for example. Its really fascinating for me personally to see how much better i have gotten by doing goldens now, I've teached far bryond what i thought i was capable of and i believe anyone can

This game has been the most fun I've ever had since I got it a few months ago, and I wish other people the enjoyment I got out of it (especially chapter 9/farewell, such an experience). Just one more tip, you will encounter a crystal heart barrier requiring almost all B-sides in farewell. I'd also do the C-sides before advancing past that point.

I really like the coming back to the game eventually and starting up a new file to beat the game on and seeing how much better you are now. That was what lead me to finally 100%ing it. It's really satisfying to see your improvement so tangibly. I did it with the base game, and then went through all the B sides on those saves before I finally tried to 100% it on my main save. I felt my frustration ease up in the place I previously quit to the point it was now manageable.
These days I'll sometimes boot up Celeste and decide to just go through it as quick as I can just for fun. Ended up buying it the game again on steam when I felt like 100%ing the game again just so I could collect all the achievements after doing it in my DRM free copy haha
I wouldn't worry so much about stolen achievement valor or anything though. Your achievement collection is personal and you're always gonna feel as good as the effort you put in to each game. Some people definitely just like to watch that funny number grow as much as they can by whatever means possible and I say enjoy if that brings you joy. Everyone's aware of the effort they put into each achievement, they know which ones bring them the most pride. Some people just don't care about effort at all and take more joy in cheating their way into the biggest collection they can, but that shouldn't take away from your pride in your personal achievements.

I get what you're saying I think my disappointment is that it could've been something I was really proud of, but now I have it and didn't earn it. It's kinda like a personal black spot on my record that being said I've 100% 42 other games on Xbox some of them I'm immensely proud of so I don't think it spoils my account as a whole.
Getting the moon berry with no assist mode is so far the most satisfying achievement I have EVER achieved. There is no better feeling than finally getting that stupid berry.

This channel is criminally underrated another game I recommend you try to 100% is Hollow Knight yes its only very challenging especially a few of the achievements but most of them you get from just playing the game normally And it only requires at least 2 playthroughs to get every achievement

Hey! Randomly found your video, and it was pretty great, really liked it! I have over 300 hours in Celeste, and I’m currently aiming for the 202 (missing only farewell). I was lucky to not give up and use assist mode, cause I did something akin to it with another game series before. The earlier games were on simulators, and I abused save states to get through them. And while it was nice, when I got to the ones on windows, I had that crutch taken away from me. Beating those took me weeks, but they were so much more satisfying, I remember the feeling to this day. I guess that experience was what made me persevere, but it’s really awesome how you managed to explain it so well in this video! I hope anyone who watched this will remember it the next time they’re at the border of losing hope in a challenge. Even if you struggle a LOT, in the end, you’ll probably be happier ;) Great video, props to you!

as a speedrunner that 100%ed the game without ever touching assist (except some goofy assist% runs) assist mode achievements are literally the only thing i dont like about this game

Yeah, I don't like how it appears that we both 100%ed the game to the outside viewer looking in but only one of us did so legitimately I feel that it almost diminishes the overall accomplishment. the 8-10 hours to get all achievements is "technically" not wrong for an experienced player that has played the game for a while (I did it on the PS5 at around 7 hours, but that's including clearing Farewell, which is its own achievement in Steam). Casual players take about 8-10 hours to even get to the Summit, let alone 100% it.
The argument to be had about Assist mode still giving achievements is kinda hard to go against when there are actual people that do put in the work but just can't get past that one room in a map, and also those that just can't do it due to disabilities. Assist mode is supposed to be used as a last last resort for able players when they just cannot do one room for the life of them (and that tends to be the final screen of Summit C side).
I'm happy I used Assist mode sparingly, only using it as a helper tool to teach me each room as best I can instead of pretty much cheating all the way. It just depends on how you use it. If you use it to fly through rooms at lightning speed, it's up to you to think that's satisfying. They did warn you.

I really love this game and I sincerely don't think you should blame yourself for using the assist mode to get all the achievements and get the 100%. Of course, assist mode kinda takes away the magic of the game and the weight of the achievement, but it's natural for humans to want to get somewhere not everyone is able to get, even if it means to use some kind of easy way. Also, some people simply don't want to keep trying the same thing over and over again because it's VERY frustrating, or they even don't have the time to do so.
If you really think you shouldn't be proud of yourself for taking the easy way, you can always try again and do it the right way this time, putting a lot of effort in getting better and finally understand the felling of doing something most people give up is surreal.
I got all the strawberries and 24 of the 25 golden strawberries (the farewell one is taking me a while, it's REALLY HARD), and it took me a lot of time, I think I had 450 hours on steam at the time and it wasn't easy as you can tell on your own experience, but I really can't describe with words how I felt when I did this.
I still play the game to this day, I currently have 1065 hours on steam and I speedrun any% (my PB is 31:07.824) :)
Just wanted to share what I think about this matter, if I wrote something in a way that is hard to understand please let me know (english isn't my native language)

It took me more over 15k deaths to 100% celeste. I didnt even know assist mode existed. But when i found out about it, I was just kind of disapointed.
The achievements i earned became worthless for me. I still love the and even picked up some moded maps since, but the feeling is still there, that some ppl just didnt put in the hours and got the same piece of the pie.

Assist Mode is there for those who the base game isn't accessible to. It's supposed to help those who struggle with it more than the average player and can't avoid that struggle even after long, arduous hours of gameplay. You were once that kind of player, the type of player Assist Mode was meant for. Then, you grew out of it. Assist Mode fulfilled the purpose it was made for. To say everyone should ditch it is not a good idea, especially if Celeste is one of someone's first video games. And for those who already have plenty of experience with the game, Assist Mode can be used to learn new tricks and techniques, or to find secrets hidden in the game that are difficult or impossible to access through normal gameplay, among other things. It's not a baby mode. It's a tool. A tool for taking your first steps in uncharted territory. A tool for second chances. A tool for ease of access. A tool for exploration. If used wisely, it can amplify the experience for many kinds of players, if not all. So don't brush it off as a detriment to the experience. Embrace it as part of the journey.
I'm not against assist mode because you're right it is a tool that enhances the game and gives people the freedom to play their way. Though I will say I still feel like there should be one achievement you can only get without it for all the players who didn't end up using it like I did.
I loved Celeste. It was one of my favorite games. Then came the final DLC chapter, Farewell. It was...or rather is...exponentially more difficult than the previous ones. I didn't even get to the part where you have to learn new tech by following a shadow across a wall. I got fed up, and gave up. And it always bugged me. But then I remembered Assist Mode. I wasn't going for any achievements, (the game is on my Switch anyways,) what could it hurt? At least then I could see the story.
But the more I thought about it, the more I decided against it. It went against the entire spirit of the game to do so. Farewell, and it's story, wasn't /for/ me. And that's okay. And you know what?
I still love Celeste. It's still one of my favorite games, and will forever cherish the time I had with it.

Great vid but I feel like the message is kinda weird because even though the sense of satisfaction is normally better if you do it the harder way there are people that will abandon the game like you did but they wont come back and if they have more fun with a bit (or a lot) of assist then thats what they should do. The mentality of the celeste community is really based around just doing what lets you have more fun with the game and this video feels more like the gatekeeping mentality that games like dark souls have. Still great narrative and hope you can get the most enjoyment out of this game as posible.
I don't dislike assist mode because you're right this game has a great story with an even better message and people should be able to experience that. That being said, I do still think you shouldn't be able to get all the achievements with it because what I did isn't equivalent to what the people who 100% this game legit did, yet we still have the same amount of points. That being said, it's just my opinion, and I'm not the one who gets to decide if it's right or not.

I think the reason they made it that way was because they didn't want to rob someone of achievements because they needed more time to think and used unlimited stamina, or slowed down the gamespeed to 90% or whatever. I wasn't aware that you can remove the assist mode marker. That seems kinda weird but the rest makes sense.

I get why it's there and why people use it I'm one of them who did, but at the end of the day you either did it or didn't do it, you know? That's why I feel strongly because I didn't do it in the way I feel I should have. But that's just my two cents, if people feel a sense of accomplishment from using it who am i to say its invalid. Yeah, you just exit assist mode and it goes away definitely kinda strange.

I just beat all the A, B and C sides and man its so satisfying to have finally done it. Took me about 40 hours and around 4500 deaths and thats by far the most dedication to a game i've had in months. Celeste just really clicked with me in a way I would never have expected and I hope that someday you will return to this game to beat it all because if you can push through the grind you'll find it very rewarding.

celeste was my first ever skill based game. I love indies, and I bought it a few years ago because i liked the music and people around me seemed to be genuinely amazed by it. it sat on my desktop for about three years. don't get me wrong, I tried to come back, but kept dying on the very first set of levels so many times I just thought that someone like me, a filthy casual, isn't capable of beating the game. then, a few years later, I failed my uni entrance exams, as you can guess, I was um.. crushed? yup, pretty much crushed. I had to wait a whole year because of my frankly stupid mistakes and a lack of dedication, but I didn't need that much time to prepare, I didn't need time at all since I thought that "someone like me would never be able to live a normal adult life anyway", I just played games. In an effort to complete my (90% narrative) backlog, I did everything to ignore celeste because it was.. well, the same kind of sore spot I was playing 24/7 just not to think about. and then it was the only one left...
I thought to myself, it's just a game, a good one at that, so I'll do it for the story. and.. then I sat there, for 40 hours, just beating the main game for the first time without assistance since that felt like undermining the creators' intent. that's why I don't understand a lot of people's frustration about dying a couple hundred times per level on their first playthrough since I died thousands of times, yes, even on the easiest of levels. and by the end of the game I had finally proven to myself that I do have what it takes to succeed at a difficult challenge, and I learned from Madeline's brilliant story that negativity is just that, an indication of one's discomfort, it shouldn't be ignored, and fighting it will only make things worse, instead it's better to face it and stop running from your emotions that make the very tasks at hand seem impossible. only by working with my other side did I beat the game, come back to collect all the main game strawberries, and then go on to beat all the B sides. I didn't go any further, since mastering certain moves required a lot of time, and I needed to get myself back on track with my exams with that (but i do intend to return later, hehe).
All this to say.. my uni problem wasn't hard in the first place, it's the shame that I associated with not "doing life perfectly" that was my mountain, but as laughably childish as it is, it was necessary for me to overcome. Your mountain might seem small to others, but it's a necessary journey to take in order to become your best self, playing celeste taught me that. I'm having my exams in a few days and although I'm terrified, I have somewhat of a saying now: if I beat celeste, I can do this. so um.. this game isn't like a cure all, but it meant a lot to me, and I thought I'd share that even though no one will read it, playing it, for lack of a better term, the intended way was one of the most reassuring and rewarding experiences of my life, and I hope it will be just that and more for many in the future
This is a great story and thank you so much for sharing! Congrats on finally getting through the B sides! I honestly use this game as a motivator too, Madeline's journey up the mountain and working with herself is incredibly powerful and motivational. Good luck on your exams but remember you beat Celeste you can do this!!!

I've posted this a couple times but it's true. Everyone has a different line as to what 100% a game is. For me and my channel, it's getting all the achievements, but the reality is everyone has a different line.
There are also golden berries, but those are for 114%
That's the trouble right what is completed? It seems to be a different line for everybody. For me and the purposes of this channel, it's all the achievements, but I know my line may be different than others.
Most people consider every strawberry (176?) a 100% but i personally think it needs way less

Good vid! I actually just recently 100%'d Celeste for the first time after playing on and off since launch. Taking long breaks and just loading up a new save file every year or so was the key for me. I really think only a superhuman could just sit down and go right for 100% lol give it another shot in the future - you'll be surprised how far you can get!
I concur; I 100%'d, and started some goldens, on my second save file and after learning some anger management skills.
(It's one of my measurable steps as a person that Celeste got me pissed, but now I see no reason for it to upset me, even if goldens can be exhausting.)

I’ve played and gotten 100% in Celeste so many times now that I forget how hard it actually is to do 100%. The first 10000 deaths I had in celeste were all in a vanilla save file while doing 100%, the next 150000 deaths came from modding. Because of that I feel like celeste isn’t even hard anymore, but this video helped me see just how much people struggle to beat celeste.
I hate to say this, but I didn’t really have any trouble beating celeste, even the b-sides didn’t give me much trouble. I beat all the A-sides in ~8 hours and went to farewell, where all my skill seemed to be gone. I barely made it halfway through, I skipped the heartwall, and honestly that was a mistake. Eventually I assisted to the end, but I felt really bad so I did the same thing as you, I did all the b-sides and c-sides before finally beating farewell once and for all.
Now I just play modded celeste which is a lot harder than vanilla by a LOT lmao

i recently 100%’d this game and boy did i love it. took me more than 70 hours, but this game is just too good lol. also, technically getting all achievements is not 100%-ing Celeste, cuz there’s this thing called golden strawberries, but ain’t no way i’m getting those anytime soon. Congrats on getting all the achievements! You bring up an interesting point on the 100% and this is what I'll say about it. Everyone has a different line as what constitutes 100% it varies person to person game to game. For myself and this channel, it's getting all the achievements, but that doesn't necessarily mean that's the only benchmark just my own.

Nope, no golden's sorry. Everyone has a different marker as to what 100% is, for myself and this channel it's the achievements. It's definitely one of those that you get better and better as you go and what is impossible becomes easy.
I came in here expecting a 100% run... But from the perspective of the players I'm used to watching, meaning the Golden Berries. Now THAT'S a challenge.
I have over 300 hours of playtime and I still haven't gotten half of the golden berries. Then again, I'm not good at the game at all and there's probably no reason for anyone to take that much time on such a task, but... I don't know. I'm not usually like this either; I'm never this stubborn about anything. Something about the game and its story just makes me feel like I have to. Somehow, I still believe I could do it. I mean, after all, I did the whole rest of it!! I got all berries, all hearts, all sides, even the moon berry and the 1UP! No assist needed!
Everything but the golden berries. They feel so unreachable, even now. Still though... I look back to when I started and then realize that the rest of the game felt exactly the same way. I felt like I would never make it. I feel like that's why I must do it; to prove myself that I *can*, yet once again.
If I can do this, I can do anything. So I won't give up.

The honorable thing to do right now would be to 100% Celeste legitimately. But if you had as many issues with it as you did for the A-Sides, you'd be in one hell of a time for the B and C sides, not to mention Farewell.

I have probably 300-350 hours in celseste across my switch and steam, and it’s one of my favorite games ever. I have all 32 steam achievements, but my end goal is to get max percent, or 202 berries. I’m not sure if I’ll ever do that, but it’s something really cool to think about. Farewell and 7B golden berries are terrifying
Also, I would really recommend 100% the game normally, it is one of the best experiences I’ve ever had in gaming, and the feeling you get when you collect that final strawberry, or beat 8C or Farewell is amazing

My first playthrough I thought beating the game made me like a pro gamer lol. But then a bit later I decided to 100% the game (no cheats) and it was sooo much harder but really fun. Then I came back again, and started doing modded levels and wow they really mold you into becoming a god cause WOW the base game feels like it’s made for babies now lol

Back when I played the game when it released, left it during core because I couldn't do it. 4 years later, I returned, and found there's ANOTHER level harder than core (Farewell). Back when I played celeste for the first time thought that core and the B sides were impossible (and also all berries). On my return managed to do all B sides and core (when I got to the core I got scared, it's where I failed last time), also discovered the existence of C sides (had no clue about them) and the addition of farewell and wow!, 2 new achievements. I saw things from the C sides and farewell and was an instant "nope, can't do that", but kept playing anyway. Eventually got all 32 achievements (the console versions only have 30 because they can't update the achievements for the 100%, so no farewell and wow!). Also thought that golden berries and the winged golden were impossible for me. Now I've got 2 goldens and the winged golden
So, even if it seems impossible, just keep trying, went through the same, thinking I wasn't capable to, and got it by trying and trying, being persisten. You can do this

The C side golden berries are not much harder than the levels themselves. The first two A sides are short and easy, but after this there is a huge difficulty gap, it took me months to get another one. I'm not sure persistence is enough for golden berries, I've personally given up on completing them.

I mostly handled the difficulty curve by going in order to make things as smooth as possible. I beat the game up to chapter 7, got all the collectibles a level at a time, beat chapter 8, started working through all the b sides, and now i'm starting on the c sides. After that I want to do fairwell and then the golden berries.
When I got too frustrated to continue I'd replay the game in a new file to see my improvement and it was exhilerating! When that got boring I started speed running any%.
I did use assist mode in a few places to slow down the movement so I could learn a room or to get me through a room I genuinely couldnt understand. I even assist skipped an entire b side (8b) because honestly It wasnt fun for me. But I also have the goal of doing a deathless 202 berries run one day (beating the game 100% without dying, doing fairwell 100% without dying, and doing the golden berries) so I know ill be replaying all these levels hundreds of times and most of the things I used assist on before I now know how to do.
The best thing about celeste to me is how imediate and obvious improvement is, it remember nearly giving up at chapter three (it took me 8 hours the first time!) Now I speed run it in 15 minutes. And the satisfaction I got from beating 7b was like nothing ive ever felt.

That's the most insane challenge I've ever heard, and I wish you luck! Sounds like you've come so far already so I know you'll get to the top of the mountain someday! I belive only one person has ever done deathless 202 berries. Although, if one person can do it... that definitely means it's achivable, if slightly unhinged in terms of consistency required
I turned on assist mode one time on my main file to get to a hidden secret in chapter six (the game dev room) and then turned it back off again. I felt disappointed in myself so I went back to the room legitimately.

im currently doing celeste, clearing all strawberry, b sides and all (not c side yet cause i havent find how to unlock them). I'm at chapter 7. And i can tell this will be one of my best gamer achievment (along side clearing Galaxy Collapse in Osu mania, being high plat in lol and high plat in brawlhalla and Furi hard mode). Gaming is so much fun.

This is interesting, I definitley think assist mode is good, because it makes sure that everyone who picks up celeste, can at least appreiciate its story, a story that very heavily resonated with me, and I have a hunch, it would for a lot of other people too, but I am currently on my second playthrough, over 500 deaths in, on chapter 2, yikes, but i know what im getting into, it’ll be hard as hell, but i'll do it, eventually, I also am completely blind in the B and C sides, but seeing that you had over 1000 deaths on chapter 2’s B side, scares me, because you seem to be better at Celeste then I am
I don't dislike assist mode for that very reason. The story is great and everyone should be able to see it through. Where I don't think assist mode is good is using it like I did. Well I think it's about getting the muscle memory and getting better as you go. I'd suggest climbing the mountain then going back to the B and C sides personally.
For the same reason I disabled assist mode while playing... Nothing feels earned and there's 0 sense of accomplishment. There was only one time that I enabled it, and it was for the "Wow" achievement, and I immediately regretted it.
Beating the B and C sides legitimately is hard but zooming through the levels is also extremely satisfying once you get the hang of it. I especially love Chapter 2 C side with the dream blocks. It's worth the struggle.

In a game dripping with metaphors I suppose the assist mode is just that, asking for assistance. You reached your goal with ssri, therapy or wheelchair? Still counts.
The more I think about it, the more it fits with the themes of Celest.
That's a fair point, and I'm not necessarily against assist mode itself as you've said it makes it accessible to people who otherwise couldn't get through the game. I won't lie, I do think there should still be something special for the people who did it without assist mode, but at the end of the day that's just my opinion and I definitely don't know everything.
I have 2 personal rules for using assist mode : never use it on my main save file, and never use it to gain access to a part of a level I haven't reached on my main save file. Breaking one of these rules would be ruining the game for me, it would remove all sense of progression and challenge. I believe assist mode can be a great tool for people with disabilities and I believe these people have the right to play with this mode without having some special mark on their savefile. Even if there was a mark cheaters could use mods to hide it anyway.
Honestly, pretty solid rules! Yea, good call, as that's exactly what happened with me. I'm not against assist mode for that reason. I just think there should be something for the people who did it without help, is all.

how the hell did you play without collecting every strawberry you saw. they where they just, demanding to be taken. they even make you aware they are their with the beat of their hear drum. every time Isaw one, I got super happy, and everytime I abandoned it, I felt like I failed in some small way. then again, the strawberries added 200 - 300 deaths so maybe I'm just the weird one
No, I get what your saying they are quite tempting lol I did on my first run but after I got the achievement I was like me lol
"Not everybody can 100% this game, I know I can't", 20 seconds later: "The central theme of this game is that you can do this". I took months to 100% Celeste, and that is counting Chapter 9 and the Moonberry. It was probably the most challenging thing I did in a game, and I tell you this: If you finished the storyline, you CAN 100% this game. The point of the game is that no matter how long it takes, you can overcome any challenge it puts in front of you. You don't NEED to put in the hours to 100% it, but you certainly can.
Personally, I think it was unfortunate that you had the intention of 100%ing it since the begining. When I first played, I just did the main story and I was satisfied. Then I saw chapter 8, and started collecting the blue crystal hearts to enter it. After beating chapter 8, I thought I'd just come back to check out the B sides. I don't know if this is accurate, but I get the impression from the video that 3B was the first B side you played, and I think that's probably a major reason why it took you so long and you still couldn't beat it. I first played 1B, it was hard, but I was just checking it out, just having fun, seeing how far I could go, and before I knew it, I reached the end of it. After that, I played each level with a mindset of "can I beat this screen?", but the point is that after each screen you get better and better, and things that would seem impossible before are just barely doable when you actually reached them. You tricked yourself by going to 3B right away. Imagine if somehow you got to chapter 7 right after playing chapter 1, I BET you'd say it was too hard and either abandon the game or use assist mode to go through it, it would be understandable, I probably would do the same.
I only considered 100%ing this game after I had gone through most of the C sides, and only decided I'd try to when there was only Chapter 9 left. Where I'm to get is: Consider giving the game another chance, not to 100% it, but just to pass that one screen that's just above your current level, I think that's how the game was intended to be played. The feeling of going from "I'd never be able to do this, but let's see how far I go" to "This is hard, but damn, I thought I'd have quit by now" to "Wait, I'm actually doing it" to "Wtf, I can do it!" to "I f***ing did it!" is one of the best experiences I've ever had.

As someone who has gotten 100% legitimately, I can say that the challenge and feeling of accomplishment that this game gave me was one of the best gaming experiences I've ever had.
Initially, after beating all the chapters (B and C sides included), I decided to try and get the golden berries.i goldened chapters 1 and 2, but was immediately taken down to earth when I realized how daunting it would be to golden anything else, so I decided to use assist mode to get all the other goldens.
After that, I didn't quit the game. I had so much fun that I decided to do a few speedruns on the second file, and used variants to replay the entire game in mirror mode In the third file.
After that, I left the game, went on vacation, played some other games (dead cells and OMORI, plus a few, less impacting others), and had a great time.
A bit over a month or so ago, I decided to go back into Celeste.
I got used to the controls and mechanics again, and was surprised as I still had a good bit of muscle memory.
Then, I decided to try getting some goldens. In order to stop making this too long, I'll say where I am right now.
I have gotten the golden strawberries for chapters 1-5, B-sides 1 and 2, and most importantly, EVERY SINGLE C-SIDE (8C felt miserable to golden, but fun and exciting nevertheless).
I have slowed down with the golden attempts, as 6A has proven to be really challenging due to its length, but I hope I get it one day. And I think that'll be where I truly end up leaving the game, unless I get good enough at 7A to attempt goldening it.
Anyways, I'm not good at outros, so I'll just say congratulations on climbing the mountain, and you'd be surprised at how far you can push what you may think are your limits.

i dont think assist mode exists just to make the game a walk by but rather to make it more challenging for those who can't complete it. i've never used assist mode so idk what the settings are but as far as i can tell the best way to use it is to make it still challenging but possible. you don't need to feel bad about using it like that because you are still going through the difficulty of the game
You can tailor it and your right that is how it should be used. I get what your saying and don't worry I can still go to sleep at night, but I definitely feel lame for getting 100% like that.
I will say the assist mode tag being temporary is something I personally appreciate. I have beat almost the entirety of the main game (All A,B,C sides and strawberries) and a few golden strawberries with over 15,000 deaths, all without assist mode.
However, I made it part of the way through the DLC chapter 9 Farewell sometime during my playthrough and, at a the time, I was more interested in the story. After a large amount of frustration and genuinely losing some enjoyment of the game, I popped on assist mode to beat and see how it ended. I agree that it feels less rewarding and I might at some point go back and do it officially but if I think it would be a little unfair to be slapped with a "you cheated" sticker for what happened.
Really good video overall and maybe some kind of achievement to encourage not using assist mode could be good, though I do really like the current system myself

Even tough I have assist mode on, I just used it to mess around in some levels, I never ACTUALLY used it to get through the game, I did make it to the summit, but I have yet to start looking for hearts to play the core and farewell to fully beat this game, but not 100% it (unless I'm really bored one day or something). About the time it takes, for me, it only took me 8 hours to get to the summit with no assit mode. I really wanna play the game again

Took me around 26 hours and Farewell took me an extra 10 hours 😂😂😂… but feels really good completing it legit.

I'm a very bad gamer, but a very stubborn one. It took me 300+ hours and 10000+ deaths to complete the game too 100%. I even got some golden berries. Not all of them tho

That was so entertaining to watch and I 100% agree!! I absolutely love this game even if I haven't finished it, and with the new achievements totaling it up to 32 on Steam make it look scary, but one of my friends got the moon berry legit so I'm going for it too!

the only thing i didn't feel like getting was the golden berries. deaths became too much of a loss, and i like dying on this game, it never really felt that punishing. but with golden berries, i just feel bad, something celeste never really makes me feel.
i'm just glad there isn't any achievements for golden berries, because i'd totally force myself to do them if that was the case. for now, i've gotten a few of them, and whenever i feel like having a challenge with this awesome game again, i go for a try at them, and then close the game in frustration again :)

well, that's endeed is a theme of this game.
it was a FIRST platformer I played, in fact. so you might imagine how bad I was. old site first time was like 500 death or th.
and I'm still really bad at it, in my opinion (despite me beating farewell). but the thing is, I'm sure that I CAN beat any challenge, it would throw at me. it just would take a metric ton of patience and motivation.
that's what this game is meant to conduct to you. and it does a perfect job at it, as you can see.
also Maderine is trans, so she might have a giant... motivation or th 😮

I'm glad you liked the video. This was on Xbox, and there were no additional achievements for farewell (for some reason). I didn't know that at the time I was just going off the title card. I'll mention that in my next video, but it definitely wasn't my intention.
@@SgtDutch436 I played Celeste on PC, so I’m not sure if console just didn’t get updated or if your game specifically is out of date, but the current version on PC, the title card and credits list the creator as Maddy, and Farewell has several achievements with it, including a Golden Strawberry 😱
@@matthewcolosi7606 I think because the DLC was free you can't add achievements to it, but I'm unsure but there definitely wasn't anymore added on Xbox which is where I play. It's either it didn't get updated or I missed it, but it definitely wasn't on purpose.

I went off the Xbox version of the game which hasn't been updated, but that is my mistake. That is true but I also can't individually address an entire team so I went with Maddy as she seems to be the leader of the team.
Good job! And don't feel bad about not 100% the game without Assist, it's a difficult game! I recently finished 100% it and I have over 7000 deaths and 37 hours on the game! I didn't use assist for anything (except for 1-up but that one sucks) and it was pretty rewarding. I would say if you ever wanna go back and actually 100% it go through the main game, then chapter 8, then b sides, then c sides, then chapter 9 (farewell). This is what I did and it really helped going easiest to hardest. Great video though! Pretty underrated imo you earned your self a sub though!

@@SgtDutch436 to be fair if you've done the rest of the achievements you'll definitely be able to do 1up with a little effort. there mayyyy be guides on youtube, if not you can just find some easy and close together berries in 1a, since you only need 6 berries collected in a row to get a 1up

I think not enough people try to use assist and quite even when they might had enoyied a fair bit of the game.. you also do not need to crank the cheat to 100% If you feel dirty for not getting archivement legit then this goes very well along the story and messange of the game. You summed this up very nice in the video.
Yeah, I'm definitely not against assist mode as like you said it allows people to complete the game and get to experience the wonderful story they otherwise would've missed. But then you could find points to argue about too hard to get archivments that rune the complishenist mindset expirience. There are always harder chellanges from here to the modding scene to kaizo.. and only a view climb this chellanges and they are not for everyone.

the only problem this game has for me is that assist mode doesn't disable achievements and that there are no achievements for feats such as all the golden berries.
Because of it, the percentage of people who "completed" the game doesn't mean anything really , it takes away it's true value and because there's no achievements for the golden berries then there's less incentive to do it.
A lot of these decisions seem to come from a "protecting the players from themselves" kind of perspective where players feel that they "should" complete all achievements but that's not true, they really do not have to as there are no in game unlockables locked behind such accomplishments.
I am okay with accessibility but i am not okay with giving the finger to the more dedicated players.
I agree with most of what you said. Though i feel like instead of giving the finger i think it's more akin to devaluation myself.

Great video! I completely understand, but I have to say:
I played this game 100% without assist mode on. Yes, it felt very rewarding to be able to do, but it was not FUN. It wasn't fun at all.
The level design in this game made you repeat so many of the same mechanics over and over and over. It didn't feel like mastering, it felt like monotony. I hated every single hour of this game after the B-sides.
I do not recommend any other 100% player picks up this game. It was an awful experience.

I understand what you mean entirely the that's the nice thing about 100% is you get to put it down and there's a sense of finality to it if that makes sense. That being said 100% this game is certainly challenging so I get it.

I feel like you took the wrong lesson from this experience. Other people's achievements shouldn't matter to you, just your own. The assist mode is there with all its warnings to do its job of allowing people to balance their game to their own abilities. So what if people abuse it for achievements? They're only cheating themselves. That person who truly needed the help though? They deserve that 100% achievement even with assist mode and I would hate for them to be robbed of that.
Celeste is one of my favourite games and assist mode is that way I'm able to share it with my dyspraxic partner. For her it's still as hard as it was for me and not the impossibility it would have been without.
I'm definitely not against assist mode, and I do think it should be in the game for people to get to experience the great story of this game. I do I feel that there should be safeguards against completing it 100% with assist mode, but at the end of the day that's just my opinion and people have the right to do whatever they want with the game they paid for. Her name is Maddy! Not uh 8:00. She's trans, that's her deadname! Also the assist mode not disabling achievements is kinda the point. Personally I got them at first with assist and then I used the steam achievement manager to remove the achievements I "cheated" in. Also there's an actual cheat mode that exists that disables achievements.

Well I think, assist mode exists to help people who otherwise would be unable to complete the story or a difficult section, but at the end of the day that's just my interpretation the cool thing about art is it is subjective. That's interesting, I never knew you could disable the ability to get achievements with an assist mode that actually seems like a reasonable compromise though I still feel that it shouldn't be optional, but again that's just me.

Assist mode is fine as it is imo, I understand the feeling of accomplishment and all (I've 100%'ed the game without assist mode, I actually didn't know that you can even disable assist mode and remove the icon on your save profile thing lmao) but its also kinda childish to brag about it to others, I treat achievements in games as personal and the ways in which I achieve my 100% are usually at a nice level of difficulty where I feel comfortable, if someone came up to me and said "you got achievement X on the Normal difficulty rather than the Hard difficulty so it doesn't count" I wouldn't care since I had fun doing it and that's that. And realistically if you want the 100% really badly there are some shady ways to get it done, like paying someone to log in to your account and get it for you, or on PC you can use SAM for Steam achievements etc and legitimizing achievements through notions of "honour" and "being skilled" just leads to more of that kind of crappy behaviour and also elitism which is just kinda pointless, like, enjoy game.
A personal story to hopefully be a bit more convincing: recently my grandma (87) started playing videogames, I showed her celeste and she really loved it but it was too hard, so we turned on assist mode and turned the game-speed down until she could pass the tutorial, I think that her completing Chapter 1 is just as impressive, if not more, and absolutely deserving of the "complete chapter 1" achievement and I think that this holds for all the achievements she might end up getting, I see no way as to how she hasn't "earned" them or whatever.
In the first place if you want to check if someone actually got a difficult achievement or if they're bullshitting you you can ask them to screen-share for like 10 mins and just play, as someone who has played celeste for >100 hours I can immediately see (and I mean absolutely no offense) that your movements are kinda janky and if you told me you beat farewell I would laugh in your face. If its a game I'm not familiar with I can't tell if you're lying to me but at the same time I don't know if the achievement has a 1.2% completion rate because its grindy like the "And Good Riddance!" achievement in Terraria (the percentage is also so low because the achievement came out in a recent-ish update and few returning players have tried to go for it, its really grindy and unfun) or if it has a 4% completion rate because its hard like the "Embrace the Void" achievement in Hollow Knight.
I'm not saying assist mode is bad and I think it's awesome your grandma could get through chapter 1! I get, there are other ways to cheat and am not even saying you shouldn't be able to get most achievements with assist mode I'm just talking about one for the completionist's but at the end of the day it's just my opinion and i am not all knowing lol Thanks for watching the video!
I still don't really like Farewell having story. It's pretty hard even for someone who has experience with frustrating games. Like fuck, that one room with the moving block like halfway into level where you have to time a hyper/wavedash into a wall bounce just to get past the beginning? Fucking one hour, the only room that took me more was the final one, and that's because of how absurdly long it is.
Like there's a reason Extra stages in Touhou games are not that much harder than clearing the game on Normal -except the second game but we don't talk about SoEW- and you get nothing but bragging rights for clearing the games on Hard and Lunatic.
I hear what you're saying honestly I didn't even try anything after the summit without assist mode because of that. That is the silver lining with assist mode is that it still lets you experience the story though!
I agree that the achievements should be locked if you use assist mode, but the devs did address this issue. I of course have my own solution, but I'm not them and they chose what they chose.The only reason I know about this is because I'm working on a video about achievements right now. Here's the reply from the devs: It was a conscious decision to allow players in Assist Mode to still unlock achievements.
Achievements, for us, are not status symbols, and it would be counter to the philosophy of Celeste to treat them that way. For us, they're a fun way to commemorate your progress. Or in some cases they function like a dare - a "try to figure out how to do this!" from developer to player.
We don't think that a player who enjoys Celeste in Assist Mode is playing the game "wrong", or is somehow less deserving of taking part in the achievements system. If you're interested in collecting the achievements we want you to do so in the way that is most fun and rewarding for you, whether that is with or without Assist Mode.
Thank you for sharing that a very interesting perspective thanks for sharing that. I won't lie, a big part of them for me is as a status symbol being one of a small list of gamers who did something challenging, but that's me, the cool thing is there isn't just one answer as the developers of Celeste have shown. When your video is done, I'd love if you could link it very interested to see the final result you've clearly done your research.
@@SgtDutch436 I just made a community post saying that I was done with the script 8743 words or something like that, but in the end, I'm actually STILL working on it. I reread it and found it not to be as organized as I'd like it to be. I'm mainly just copy and pasting, but there are some things I'm still adding to the final final FINAL script. Once this one is done, this will be the final script and I can finally start making the video.
@@kukukachu I feel that honestly I find the scripting process to be the most mentally taxing as that's the part that dictates how everything else will be. I'm working on one right now, so I'm right there with you!

where did they get the 8-10 hours to complete??? thats like how long it took me to re-100% the game when i bought it again on steam, after already having 300 hours of play time on the nintendo switch version.
also I do get why you don't want achievements to be obtainable in assist mode, but I also get why devs made them obtainable. This whole game is about personal achievements and overcoming your inner self, and so being able to use assist on your own achievements isnt a big deal imo. If someone still feels accomplished after using assist mode, especially with how hard this game is, then more power to them. This is also why none of the platforms this game is on has achievements for the golden strawberries, it's all meant to be a personal goal that you can set for yourself and choose to overcome at your own pace. this is why only getting all 176 strawberries and all of the crystal hearts is referred to as 100% by the devs and the community while getting all golden berries to get to 202 berries is considered max%. 202 berries is by a technical definition 100% (you have obtained 100% of the collectibles and done everything possible in the game) but it's so incredibly hard that the devs didn't want people who 100% all the games they play to feel forced to do these absurdly difficult golden berries if they didn't want to or didn't feel like it was possible for them to do. It feels like the switch version was the completely intended experience, no achievements to set goals onto players who don't want them, players can just give themselves the goals that they want to. The achievements feel added out of almost necessity just to give 100% players a clearer goal, instead of having them take on the golden berries when they aren't ready for them out of a feeling of not completing the game, instead of taking on the challenge of the golden berries as a personal goal and a test of skill to show how far the player had come in terms of skill

I think they got that from the fact that you can use assist mode to do it, but honestly, I'm not sure how they arrived at that number. I get what you're saying about the game being about working with yourself to achieve a higher goal, and that assist mode helps people do that. I think why I feel strongly about it is that I didn't get to achieve my goal because I used it to take the easy way out. Instead of working with myself to overcome the mountain, it felt like I went back home. But that might just be me.
Oh, I didn't realize that it's weird because we do have the farewell chapter, just not the achievements, and I guess the name change.
