Zambia is the most "vibes" team in women's football, hands down. At the last Olympics they drew 4-4 with China & lost 10-3 (!!!) to the Netherlands (Banda scored hat-tricks in both games, btw). Also lost 5-0 twice at the World Cup last year (tbf, to Japan & Spain). Their counter-attack is extremely dangerous, but their defending, quite often, is amateur-league stuff.
I was at this game! By far the most chaotic game I've ever seen. The counter attack from zambia was so impressive but Australia dictated play so well. Thanks for covering this game, been watching for years!
I agree that the Women's football has been more entertaining than the Men's football. My only criticism is the commentary, I've seen so many lackluster reactions when players score screamers.
I usually watch football without commentators because most of the time they just distract me by talking about irrelevant stuff and being confused about what's happening on the pitch
Z, you missed even the most amazing fact about this story, Banda scored her 3th olympic hattrick in her career for Zambia, and all matches they lost (2 losses and 1 draw) she is the most unfortunate striker in the game for Zambia @zealandism
I watch mostly women's football and this was easily the most insane match I've seen since the France/Australia world cup shootout. Barbra Banda plays for my NWSL team here in Orlando and she is an absolute beast, but she has the worst luck at the Olympics. Other than her and Kundananji, their whole team plays in Zambia and their national team coach is widely known to be an awful coach and an awful guy.
Also, Michelle Heyman, who scored the winner for Australia, retired from football a while ago and came back to win the golden boot at her A-league club that finished second to last in the league this past season. Everyone said she was too old to be effective internationally, but they needed another striker when Sam Kerr tore an ACL in January.
Z you should absolutely look into the situation going on with zambias head coach. He has been under investigation for sexual misconduct for awhile and is actually banned from having any private contact with the team. So much so that he’s staying at a completely separate hotel from his team
The landlocked bit is part of the analysis of Africa. Nations without sea access generally struggle a lot more due to restricted trad options. In other words, most wealth in Africa is situated around the coast. This also has an impact on other aspects - no money, no football pitches, no coaching, etc.
That’s quite interesting, didn’t make that link before but it definitely would contribute to the disparity. Wonder if the current construction of high-speed rail across the continent will diminish that gap over time
The thing that annoys the heck out of me is that the women's tournament is still a 12 team tournament while the men's is 16. Absolutely should be at parity with both at 16.
I gotta check out those highlights. It makes me even more enthusiastic to do what I'm calling a "bi-sexual run" on FM25 (low league women's team to champs and low league men's team to champs, possibly with a male and female international too if that's possible).
I think we were screwed until the Zambia keeper made that mistake and lost all her confidence. But to be honest, there were long swathes of the match where what was happening barely even felt like football, the attitude from both teams was so beyond cavalier. It was like two boxers swinging haymakers with zero guard or slipping.
The same happened in the 2020 EL second qualifying round between FCSB-TSC Backa Topola (that season it was only one legged ties). It was the most insane match I have ever seen as a FCSB fan as we were running out of players due to the pandemic, it went 2-0 for Backa by the 14th minute, then 2-1 in the 25th, then they got a red before the break, we drew level in the 50th but they immediately scored the 3rd in the 51st then we equalised via a penalty in the 63rd. 3-3. Then one of our best players in Florinel Coman went off with an injury which killed his form for the next two seasons. We only had 3 players on the bench. We move anyway. Minute 90+2. A ball sent into the TSC box hits an opposing defender and is deflected into the goal. 3-4 to FCSB. We think we ve finally done it. But no. Not even 60 seconds later, we concede again. 4-4 by full time, we move to extra time. By this point I was pretty much laughing at the absurdity of it all. Minute 103, they get ANOTHER red card. Now they only have 9 men on the field and indeed we score for 4-5 as Dennis Man, one of the few first team players left on the field completes his hat trick. Is it finally over? No, of course not. We concede again in the next play to make it 5-5 by the end of the first half of extra time. Further goals from our Adrian Petre (108) and their Tumbasevic (117, second of the night) make it 6-6. We are off to penalties where we do indeed qualify after only one spot kick was missed. Trust me, can’t call anything FIFA/FM throws at you weird after seeing that lmao. Then there was also the famous Dinamo 4-5 Foresta Falticeni in the Romanian league in November 2000. Dinamo was 4-0 up in the 61st minute. At home. Against a newly-promoted team that would end up relegated via playoff that season. They STILL somehow lost. How. Just how. It was so unbelievable that it sparked conspiracy theories since. A player called Robert Nita put 2 past Dinamo that night. He was actually a Steaua player, Dinamo s great rival, he was only on loan at Foresta for that half of the season. I actually found an interview with him where he says the coach would have been fired by halftime (3-0) had the comeback not taken place, the owner had left the stadium by 2-0 (minute 29), agrees that Dinamo had a penalty that wasn’t awarded at 4-0 and categorically denies any matchfixing. In case you are wondering how that season ended, well, Foresta got relegated as I said, 13th in a 16 team league was only enough for a relegation playoff that they lost on away goals. Dinamo came 2nd, 9 points away from the title that was won by Steaua. Nita, for his part, left for Rapid that winter, ended up with 14 league goals that season and never played for Steaua or Foresta after that. Just mental, really.
Sofascore correctly has Bay FC as the club of Kundananji but the transfer history says that she plays at Bayern München, I think they are slightly confused.. Also the comeback winner goal for Japan was a banger and I’m glad both of our teams are still in the competition. Now they just need a win against Nigeria
I was in the car with my dad,and he wanted me to check the score of the US game bc he was driving. So I pulled up my app, told him the score of the US game and then went wait a minute WHAT is the score of the Australia v Zambia game???
Unfortunately no Team GB at this Olympics (last time was 2012 I think) as the individual FAs are concerned joining together with effect their independence from being lumped with England as Team GB at the WC or Euros, which is a reasonable worry and they're rightfully passionate about their own teams. They can't compete separately due to IOC rules as the rest of the sports all compete as Team GB. Though FIFA has promised this won't be the case, unlikely we'll see Team GB football teams at the Olympics in the future sadly. Which is sad as there are some very exciting young talents in the 4 nations teams.
should really be b teams for the men’s football imo. would be class to see all the players on the fringes of national teams. for england it’d be maddison, gordon, watkins etc
