  • This is an apex review of the Civivi Elementum. The apex reviews are not quite as detailed as my hype vs reality reviews, but more than my first impressions. Here is a link to my methodology on these reviews:

    Reminds me a little of a refined version of the Ka-Bar Dozier. Nice knife!

    Just got my new C.E. in green G10. The detent action does seem a bit slow and hard to work, especially to fidget with. BUT I got a new CRK CEO 2 weeks ago and after the first day my hand was sore from hot spots and me flicking it 150 times. I thought it sucked. BUT after my overused tired hand healed after a few days, I can flick it like a champ every time. My point is, the first day may not be the best day to judge. As far as the negative D2 experience as expressed, I guess we all need that experience to actually know since in general, I hear D2 is a couple grades higher than the CEO CR8 steel. Hey what do you want for $55.00? C.E. offers upgraded steel. Being .010 thinner blade material used, owners report a even better action than D2.

    I took off the clip and carry this like a traditional pocket drop and like it much better this way. Big hands I guess

    I have to base my opinions on my own experiences, and though I can appreciate the opinions/experiences of others, it will be that which I see, feel and touch that will determine my reality. I can speak with the background of several decades of knife collecting/using, and steels ranging from mystery steel from Pakistan, 440C in my own knife making, to the newer crucible "super" steels.
    That being said...ALL of my experiences with D2 steel in pocket knives has been positive. I have noted problems with some steels in low quality/budget knives ( low budget being under $30), but not in real D2. And I'm not afraid to sharpen a knife when it becomes dull. Some "super" steels are more difficult to sharpen than D2 or 420HC, but all that usually balances out...ease of sharpening vs duration of keeping an edge. (This explaination excludes fraud where the maker misrepresents the actual steel type).
    The one thing I'm not keen on is steel snobbery in the knife community.
    I could fill pages with what I believe a folding knife is actually expected to be capable of, against the torture tests that some believe truthfully show desired characteristics in a folding knife. Unrealistic expectations are not the norm...but that is another story.

      I totally agree with basing you opinions on your own experiences, and that’s how I approach my reviews. I also can’t ignore data that has been compiled, testing many different variations and companies. I’m not sure if you are calling me a steel snob here, but I’m not even suggesting supersteels or anything here. I suggested other very simple and attainable steels. I am definitely a steel nerd, but I wouldn’t consider myself a snob per say. I don’t think I have unrealistic expectations either, if that’s what your implying.

    When stropping D2 I got the best results with an aluminum oxide paste, it got real sticky for me and would glide through phone book paper without a sound. I agree with you that D2 doesn't hold an edge for long slicing through cardboard. I haven't had a knife in D2 for a couple of years and I'm on the hunt for another one. The Elementum with Rosewood scales is on my list so I was interested in your review although it wouldn't be a work knife for me due to the edge retention. I liked the review.

    • @inthepocket7405
      @inthepocket7405  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I normally get a more aggressive edge with my diamond compounds,but I definitely could have given my aluminum oxide strop a go. I think this is a great little knife, and hopefully you get a good one. It could be nice as a gentleman’s folder👍 thanks man

    FYI mine showed up today and the detent was really soft (like yours). I flipped the washers around like I saw in the LTK video (so the ball bearings were against the blade face), played around with the pivot screw a bit, and it made a noticeable difference in deployment.

    Love the Elementum...great pocket knife. And great detailed review, as usual. I think the Elementum is my favorite Civivi, and especially the ones with wood scales. I haven’t done any sharpening on the D2 yet, but I hope it turns out better than what you are saying it might turn out to be...which might be schite...lol. Great review by the way.

      Thanks a lot bud:) I can’t bring myself to buy anymore Ferrum forge knives, personally. It has nothing to do with their designs... I think they make great knives... it’s just a principle thing for me at this point. Thanks again👊

    You always gotta show off that Para 3 in Cruwear, I want one so bad lol! Another sweet video, I myself just ordered an Elementum (micarta scales). I figured I'd see what all the hype is about, they sell out super fast everywhere it seems. As far as the budget steels you mentioned, I find Spyderco vg10 to be very soft. However, the Aus8A on my Kabar Dozier seems to out perform most of my d2 blades, maybe because I've sharpened past the burnt factory edge?

    • @inthepocket7405
      @inthepocket7405  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Lol It is probably my favorite, or definitely top two:) I think you will like the knife bud, and that micarta should be pretty sweet. Yeah, I haven’t experienced Spyderco VG10 myself, but I think it did decent in G’s test. Maybe it was the example... Aus8 is great stuff, and Aus8A seems to be the same, and I can’t recall why it got such a bad rap. My Tufflite holds a great edge.

      InThePocket I ordered the micarta version from BladeHQ just last night. That one was in stock along with the grey G10 and I believe the ebony. The rest were out of stock or, in the case of the brass/bronze models, listed as coming soon.

    I sold the Gent after trying my best to get along with it. The blade/handle ratio was way off, and by that I mean that either the handle was too small (skinny) for the blade, or the blade was too hefty for the handle. I loved the way it looked on TH-cam, but pretty much hated it to the depths of Hades in hand and in use. Hopefully the Elementum fixes those issues.

    • @inthepocket7405
      @inthepocket7405  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I do agree with you, that the handle is too slim for blade, and it is thin in hand for any significant cutting. I was really just comparing the action there, not the ergos or anything. I do think the Elementum is better in hand, and is much more comfortable to use.

    I think the Damascus Elementum is using 9CR18MOV, but that's just a rumor I picked up from watching too many knife reviews.

    I avoid budget D2 like the plague. I've seen the giant range of testing results for it, it's not consistent. Waited for the damascus version to come out. I like my Elementum action more than my Gent (very first run and it was loc-tited shut). I think I might like it more than the Gent overall.

    • @inthepocket7405
      @inthepocket7405  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I actually think I like the Elementum overall better than the gent, it’s just the action on the this example of the Elementum isn’t even close to this example of the gent.

      @tacticalcenter8658 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      The damascus civivis will only perform like 440c. So not much better than d2 or 8cr13mov. It looks nice but so does Vg10 San Mai which performs better. That's not to say anything about the knifes with it. But it's nothing special. To me it's basically like pleather instead of leather. 🤷‍♂️

    A very nice little gentleman's folder and as such, in my mind, isn't meant to break down umpteen feet of cardboard. It's intended to be carried a lot but used only a little and then for light duty use such as opening mail, cutting a string, slicing an apple and other mundane daily tasks. And it's meant to do these tasks innocuously, without causing some bleeding heart liberal to have a meltdown.
    Personally, I really like the Elementum and the only nit I have to pick is an aesthetic one. Being a gentleman's folder to me, means a lanyard is uncalled for which means the lanyard hole is unnecessary. A set of scales that covered the lanyard hole would make the knife look SO much sleeker and cleaner. Civivi could/should offer said scales as an optional extra and those of us who don't want or need a lanyard would be happier and the lanyard lovers could opt for the standard scales and have lanyards to their heart's content. It would be easy peasy and relatively inexpensive.
    Just my .02¢ worth on a very slick little knife.

    • @inthepocket7405
      @inthepocket7405  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It is... I also feel like it should be able to get a lot of work done, however, with the grind and ergos, it is fully capable by design. What if this is someone’s only knife... I do agree that this really has no need for a lanyard hole.

    I have over 30 knives, most are D2..I just dont see what you are saying...my D2 knives perform just as expected...and yes, I sharpen my own knives..and have done my own personal tests...Im just not getting the poor results you claim....as a tool steel, how can you say its not a "production" steel?

    • @Lemonhoko
      @Lemonhoko 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It's by far one of the most consistently disappointing steels in production knives. Follow outpost76.

    • @inthepocket7405
      @inthepocket7405  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I am saying mass produced D2 does not perform. That’s fine... if you like it, then you can continue to buy it. I’m just going from my experience, and a whole lot of other people from the looks of the comments in this and other videos where I talk about this, and go watch Outpost76’s recent video about d2 (I linked it in the description). That’s why... What I am saying, is that due to the critical nature of d2’s heat treat protocols, it is not ideal for production type heat treatment. Simple as that...

    • @Lemonhoko
      @Lemonhoko 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@inthepocket7405 Actually the negative comments in this video seem to be indifferent or leaning towards having a positive experience with D2....As you know, especially from China, there is an explosion of D2 as blade steel coming here to the USA....do you really want to alienate all the buyers of this steel? So far, I have watched Outposts videos and also watched Cedrics tests, that kind of counterdicts what you are saying...Cedris tests show that D2 is usually superior to Au8, 8cr's VG10 and a few other steels...anyways you have a right to your opinion as do I...enjoy the hobby my friend!
