Fallen Unicorns: Startup Billionaires Nearly $100 Billion Poorer Than A Year Ago | Forbes

  • Last January, credit card startup Brex raised $300 million from a string of A-list investors, nearly doubling the company’s valuation to $12.3 billion and making its Brazilian cofounders- 26-year-old Pedro Franceschi and 27-year-old Henrique Dubugras-the world’s youngest self-made billionaires.
It’s certainly far too early to write-off the long-term success story that could be Brex. But a year later, Forbes estimates the company’s value has fallen to $6.4 billion-nearly 50% less than 12 months ago. Francheshi and Dubugras, meanwhile, are no longer billionaires-worth an estimated $900 million apiece, down from $1.5 billion.
They are in good company. In March 2022, near the peak of the startup funding frenzy, 44 founders of unicorns-private companies valued at over $1 billion-were worth a total of $190 billion, according to Forbes’ estimates. A year later, with crypto tumbling and private markets going the way of their tanking public counterparts, Forbes-in consultation with prominent VCs, investors and data providers-has revalued the world’s billionaire-backed unicorns. The results are stark: Half the wealth of the billionaires behind unicorns has been wiped out, leaving this elite group of startup visionaries $96 billion poorer than they were a year ago. Twelve of them are no longer billionaires. And that excludes a dozen Chinese unicorn founders who face their own unique set of issues (political and otherwise).
Some unicorns have already cut their own valuations. Online payments startup Checkout.com proactively slashed its internal mark to $11 billion in December, after investors valued the company at $40 billion in January 2022. That knocked down the fortune of its Swiss founder and CEO Guillaume Pousaz, briefly Europe’s richest tech entrepreneur, to $7.2 billion from $23 billion.

What would’ve been better for this video than talking through the methodology of the drop in valuation would’ve been the reason behind the drop. Understanding the business models, consumer sentiment and industries would’ve made more sense to find out which kind of unicorns, business models and in which industries, are doing better and why. Would encourage Forbes to research that and produce a more meaningful video the next time on this topic, as a sequel possibly.

It's mostly dictated by the Federal Funds Rate. Corporate debt yields the same yield as T-bills plus the default risk. Growth stocks yield the same as debt plus the risk premium. Ergo, when the T-bill yield goes to zero, people buy stocks with lottery like payoffs because at least they offer some return. When T-bills give good yields no one will touch stocks that aren't already making money

Wrong, it’s dictated by the completely improper and bogus post money valuations used by VCs, the tech and financial press, data analytics firms and others. It’s a fraud and all 135 companies evaluated in the Stanford Study were over valued, 100%! I explain this fraud very clearly in my podcast, Distilling Venture Capital. The so-called $1B companies are, in fact, not $1B firms. The whole thing is a farce

After a horrendous 2022, shell-stunned financial backers have misfortunes to recover and a lot to consider, as an expansion report and a pile of different information did close to nothing to change assumptions that the Central bank would probably keep climbing intrest rates regardless of whether the economy dials back, And that implies more red ink for portfolios for the principal quarter of year 2023. How might I benefit from the ongoing unstable market, I'm currently at a junction choosing if to exchange my $250k security/stock portfolio.

Center around two key targets. In the first place, remain safeguarded by realizing when to offer stocks to cut misfortunes and catch benefits. Second, get ready to benefit when the market turns around.I suggest you look for the direction a representative or monetary consultant.

Let’s be honest most of these companies were severely overvalued and the only reason they reached such valuations was mostly because there was economic growth going on and Silicon Valley hype.
