Yeah. But he was completely wrong about the Northern Cape. Whites don't make up 40% of the population, but rather 7.1%! There is simply no region of SA where the white populace is that high. The majority in the NC is black African and Coloured. A lot of Northern Cape Coloureds are actually former Tswanas that speak Afrikaans as a primary language. (reclassified under the old system) So maybe the fact that 53.8% of the NC population speaks Afrikaans caused the confusion. Also if Will Smith (and even Beyonce) spoke Xhosa or Tswana no one would say they are Coloured. Will Smith is darker than many Xhosas and Tswanas. LOL
Yes you're very correct. I'm from SA, and I too advantage of the opportunity I had with crypto currency Bitcoin some years back. Now I'm debt free and finally found freedom financially.
Finally I got to see Geography now covering my country. Born in Limpopo, lived there for 12 years. Moved to Gauteng lived there for 7 years. Now I live in Kwa Zulu Natal. I can speak about 8 of the languages (Sepedi, Sesotho, Setswana, Isizulu, Tiswati, Isixhosa, Xitsonga "to a certain extent" and Tshivenda "also to a certain extent"). I'm basically what you call a "True South African" Whoever is reading this. HAVE A GREAT DAY

Some ideas for next fuller week episodes: - Provinces, counties, autonomous regions, etc... of China. - States of Mexico. - Autonomous communities of Spain. - Provinces of Argentina. - Provinces and territories of Canada. - Regions of Italy. - _Bundesländer_ of Germany. - States and territories of Australia.
Corrections: -Most people classify 4 main races in South Africa: Black, White, Coloured and Indian. 76.4% Black, 9.1% white, 8.9% coloured and 2.5% Indian or Asian. -Capital of the Free State is Bloemfontein, not "Blomfentein". It is Afrikaans for fountain (or spring) of flowers. Its pretty accurate as the Free State is hella dry and Bloemfontein is known as "The city of roses". There is a whole lot of flowers and gardens there as it is the Judicial Capital of RSA, a green spot in a dry province. -Coloured people, not "colored" :) We use UK spelling in South Africa, being a former colony and whatnot. Awesome video! Can't wait until you get to the S countries and South Africa is featured! This is my country :D
Mr van Staden. Seriously dude, enough of this nonsense. I have live most of my 57 years in a variety of places in South Africa. Three of the times I was robbed were in England, once here. I have lived in informal settlements and wealthier ones, all as a 'white'. Crime is bad, but it is crime, being 'white' has little to do with it, economic disparity is a much better indicator.
saun lee coetzee The racist South African government is literally stealing the white farmers land using violence and force. That’s probably what he means. How can you not be aware of this?
@nathan van staden I've lived in South Africa all my life, literally no problems with crime (although I tend to avoid bad neighborhoods); when I went to the UK the first thing that happened was a guy swiping my wallet (not that I dislike the UK, I love it). South Africa isn't perfect but we aren't some crazy murderfest. As long as a tourist avoids the townships they should be fine.
@Nils Christoffersson dont u have hot warm summer days in Sweden and if it is hot for you come in the winter months that's if it is not hot cause sometimes not all the time our winters are hot
still they are different, chinese and indian are both asian but different race. Malay and Indo look similar and speak similar lang but still different race, African american also black but they are not same race as zulu or xhosa
Shaun Michele yeh i getchu, i just thought it was funny how he was speaking about water activities in one place but showed a completely different province😂😂
Most Coloureds in the Western Cape aren't from White/Black relationships. The primary sources (diaries kept by colonists and marriage registries), in the Cape Town archives, point towards them having South Asian as their most significant part of their background. White is also significant, but Black ancestry isn't nearly as significant as some would suggest.
@@NuanceWithNiki I doubt it's any sort of intentional thing, considering that early settlers didn't have the foresight to predict how the country would be today, to want to "whitewash" their personal diaries or government records.
Die slawemeisies wat in die Kaap gebore is, was besonder gewild: “They were the favourites of their mistresses, who took pride in seeing them well-dressed”. Sy grafsteen is opgerig by Zandvliet, Faure in 1699. “They are associated in every amusement, they share every act of tenderness with the white children” is aangeteken in ‘n Britse dokument. “And just as their forefathers volunteered to go forth against the Hottentots with assegais, so we know their services are needed against a common (black) enemy”, word daarby gevoeg."
Wrong! Coloured as a category and Malay (Asian) simply isn't the same thing. Malay may fall under the Coloured category but the majority of people categorized as Coloured are clearly African-Asian creoles. The number of African people re-categorized as Coloured in the 20th century in particular is significant. (which one would think is fairly obvious to anyone actually in South Africa)
@@agrid2608 I think he's referring more specifically to Cape Coloureds. Being one myself, I have Javanese heritage and the blue eyes of my German/Dutch/English heritage. There was previously (have not checked if it's still like that) a distinction between Cape coloureds, and coloureds from everywhere else. Also, may coloureds were re-catgorised as white back in the day - Which is how my grandmother lost contact with her cousins, as she was no longer able to see them. As for Cape Coloureds, the mix is predominantly Asian and European.
@@danianmay That represents only a portion of Cape Coloureds. An Asian-European mix makes up only a small part. Anyone in Cape Town can clearly see that the bulk consist of Asian-African mix, and reclassified blacks. The Indonesians mixing with blacks goes back centuries to the days of the Dutch East India company. Also people who were previously culturally Xhosa a few generations ago make up a large portion of people who are today integrally Cape Coloured. I think you and I both know that statistically a blue-eyed Coloured (or even one with skin that isn't some shade of brown) is firmly in the minority.
Misspelled Bloemfontein. Just to let you know. Also extra facts! Johannesburg is the biggest city in the world that is not built on a river or near any major source of water. The Nan Hua temple (been there its awesome) I believe is the biggest Buddhist Temple in the southern Hemisphere. Afrikaans pronunciation is a bit lack luster but at least you can do the xhosa clicks :)
At some point South Africa will change its name, probably to Azania (or Balkanise and reform into the Azanian Federation with some other southern African states joining the federation). This might mess with going alphabetically.
Great episode, as a South African and a South African history I'd say you got about 65-70% of things right - which is really good. The biggest mistake you made is about race, but that is super complicated. Basically South Africa has five recognised races that are the legacy of colonialism and apartheid. The British colonial government implemented a governing policy called "racialism" (and later "seperate development") where they believed people of different races and ethnicities should be governed by seperate laws. They created five racial catergories: white, black, coloured, Indian, and Chinese. These groups were then further sub-divided: whites into Afrikaans and "English" people (the "English" group has actually come to encapsulate all non-Afrikaans white people, and even includes a sizable Dutch and German community who moved to South Africa after WW2); Indian people were sub-divided into Hindus, Muslims, and Christians; and Coloured people were divided between Muslims and Christians, but also actually included most Khoisan people groups. "Chinese" people became the term used to define any East Asian person (except Japanese people, who were legally considered English whites) and were such a small group they were hardly recognised. Black people were divided into "tribes", however not all African people belonged to the larger groups you mentioned and many people were simply assigned tribes by the colonial government based of the dialect they spoke or the rough area where they lived (this gets more complicated with different groups). Race also wasn't simply about decent, a lot of it would rest on appearance based off scientific racism. If your race was ambiguous the government would conduct a series of tests and would reclassify people based off the result. For example, they'd conduct something called the pencil test, where they'd stick a pencil in your hair. If it fell out you were considered white, Indian, or Chinese (depending on other tests) and if it stayed in you were seen as black or coloured. Many families were torn apart by this system and we're still feeling the affects of it today. The other big mistake you made was more a problem with syntax than actually getting a fact wrong. The large Indian population in KZN were brought to work on sugar plantations during the late 19th and early 20th centuries, not after Ghandi practiced law there. But ja, overall a really good episode :)
"The other big mistake you made was more a problem with syntax than actually getting a fact wrong. The large Indian population in KZN were brought to work on sugar plantations during the late 19th and early 20th centuries, not after Ghandi practiced law there." Thanks for pointing this out.
I think you are completing the 'BRICS' You did Brazilian States , Russian Republics , Indian States and Union Territories and Now South African Provinces. If you do a Chinese Episode u complete it! (P.S. I hail from India)
Races: Black, Coloured, White, Indian, and others. Those are the major races in SA The most spoken language is not English, and is actually Zulu. So its basically English and Zulu. But most of this video was on point and really good. Great channel!!
I’m Dutch myself and I would love to speak to one of the Afrikaners there. It’s weird seeing Dutch people but they don’t speak Dutch. They speak Afrikaans.
Hello Ryan.
Hi Ryan, this is a little difficult to explain in Dutch at this stage. Firstly, everyone who is born in South Africa, are South Africans, so I am a South Africa. Seeing as I am from the Afrikaans-speaking culture within this country, I am called an Afrikaner (the name refers to the language I speak and not my skin colour). However, when referring to race in South Africa, I am a white/Caucasian/European African while the black people are called black/coloured or African. In our country, Afrikaner does therefore not refer to a race, but to the language group. I am 100% South African with my ancestry as German settlers. However, I cannot speak German. Because I visit the Netherlands on a regular basis for work, I can also (more or less) speak Dutch and it was easy to learn as it is similar to Afrikaans. In other words, when the Dutch people speak about Afrikaner, they refer to only the skin colour, but it also refers to the Afrikaans-speaking culture in our country. Not sure if all this makes sense, hahaha.
@Andre Gronum that's really sad to hear. I thought that there were some places in the Dutch universities that offered Afrikaans courses. I don't know much about history, but to an outsider, it is interesting to know that at some point the Boers distanced themselves from the Netherlands, but never stopped using orange in their flags, maybe if the Cape Colony had became its own thing their relations with the Netherlands would be different, I don't really know. A part of me still wishes that Netherlands one day sees South Africa (or the Cape, for that matter) as Portugal sees us here in Brazil.
@@HerioSousa Many people are still in favour of an Afrikaans state. Others say that'd be racist and completely impossible. The government thinks anything that has even remotely to do with Afrikaners is inherently racist.
@@jancovanderwesthuizen8070 At least to me an Afrikaans state would look like pretty diverse, but I guess a lot of people make the connection Afrikaans = Afrikaner's language and just ignore everything else.
Facts. Most White people don't even bother pronouncing it properly, I dont blame them tho, its kind of a mouth full of you haven't grown up speaking the language.
Technically Will Smith and Beyonce would be Black, and maybe Coloured. It's the likes of Mariah Carey and Drake that will be obviously coloured. It's not a straightforward classification, there are lots of other subtle nuances. You need to be a flâneur and not a tourist to truly get it.
Now, I could see Will Smith, but Beyonce? Her mother is a Louisiana Creole, which is roughly similar to being Coloured in South Africa. Are half Coloured, half black people considered black down there?
Half black and half coloured can choose one or both, remember both coloureds and blacks have their own distinct identities and colourful cultures. It's like Half Italian and half German, it's all up to the individual. :) Trevor Noah, for example, embraced all his identities equally.
@@sonikku956 race can be a spectrum. It would depend on your chosen culture then. Mixed race is a classification too, generally refering to when races intermix e.g. white black, white colored, white Indian, colored black, colored indian, black indian.
As a white south african that migrated to europe that's an understatement. Our universities are just as or even better than some european ones but when you say you got a Masters in Computer Science in South Africa they laugh and say "what? did you invent the internet there?".
@@evertaj2438 I agree with you, we have so much down there but it isn’t publicized around the world and most people don’t know much about us. When I was in the SA military we had such nice state of the art military pentathlon facilities, when I moved overseas I had a conversation with someone about military pentathlon and he was surprised that I knew so much about it. When I tried to search pentathlon facilities in SA, I couldn’t find one SA facility on the internet, not one. All I found was American facilities.
On one hand, I'm really happy this came out, cause I thought I'd have to wait forever for the South Africa episode, but on the other hand I feel like as a Capetonian I feel the need to take exception at the fact that you showed a picture of Cape Town when you were speaking about KwaZulu Natal.
The South African anthem is similarly idiosyncratic with its multilingual stanzas that lyrically supplement one another. Mad props to whoever can sing it from the heart. Also helps that it’s mellifluous. 🙂
I'm an American and Nkosi Sikelel' iAfrika + Die Stem Van Suid Afrika (I nickname it Nkosi Stem or Die Sikelela) is my favorite anthem! I think it actually was named best world anthem back in 2016 or 2017. I know it by heart and I'm not even remotely South African. 😂

The most people are black Caribbean mixed because we were colonized by Netherlands. These Islands are not so known around the world, I hope through this way, our beautiful Islands could be known.
North West was formally like the Las Vegas of South Africa but not so much anymore, the reason being was that the provinces have a certain level of autonomy around their rules and Gauteng had a gambling ban for many many years. Sun City was built as a casino on the edge of that radius (There's another in Limpopo called the Carousel) and it was marketed as a place to go and gamble legally, the rules have subsequently been changed and now Golf Reef City, Emporer's Palace, and Montecasino exist as gambling locations within Gauteng
Man, I have so much respect for you. Well done on your detailed presentation. Your pronunciation was impeccable. This is the first video of yours I am watching. Your knowledge on previous and current affairs of the country is impressive. For a 10 min long video, this was excellent.

When you get to the South Africa episode you should mention the Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden! Cape Town/Western Cape has the smallest flora kingdom in the world, and much of that is seen not only out in nature and the parks, but is grown at Kirstenbosch! The gardens are beautiful and one of my favorite parts about Cape Town! Also Cape Town has a much different climate compared to the rest of the country-it's usually described as a Mediterranean climate.

There should actually be 5, the Khoisan are their own race. It's like how Indians and Chinese people are different races, while still being from Asia, you know?
well as a south african ive never seen an official state document having an open tick box under race for khoisan, we would classify them under black in racial categorization (which i have no opinion on, race is a problem area in the country)
@@mahomedahmedseedat3670 The Khoisan themselves have argued that they've been unjustly placed in the Coloured category (as many Coloured people have a very large amount of Khoisan ancestry), and that they aren't the same race as the Bantu derived South Africans. But I am a foreigner after all, the best way to know about the ins and outs of South African society is to ask South Africans.
lol @ Lesotho and eSwatini. I do feel that they must unite with us (Namibia and Botswana too due to common monetary policies, in Namibia's case, and common market). 16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. 17 For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved. 18 He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God. 19 And this is the condemnation, that light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil. 20 For every one that doeth evil hateth the light, neither cometh to the light, lest his deeds should be reproved. 21 But he that doeth truth cometh to the light, that his deeds may be made manifest, that they are wrought in God.
Mark 1.15
15 And saying, The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand: repent ye, and believe the gospel.
2 Peter 3:9
The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.
Hebrews 11:6
6 But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him.

(reclassified under the old system)
So maybe the fact that 53.8% of the NC population speaks Afrikaans caused the confusion.
Also if Will Smith (and even Beyonce) spoke Xhosa or Tswana no one would say they are Coloured.
Will Smith is darker than many Xhosas and Tswanas. LOL

-Capital of the Free State is Bloemfontein, not "Blomfentein". It is Afrikaans for fountain (or spring) of flowers. Its pretty accurate as the Free State is hella dry and Bloemfontein is known as "The city of roses".
Jannetje Bort, ‘n gekleurde vrygelate slavin, is byvoorbeeld onderhoud vir haar vier kinders toegestaan deur Van der Stel teen ‘n wit inwoner.

Checking in from Pretoria. The Jacaranda city.
Ja!
Ek kan ook nie wag nie

Most South Africans over 10yo know the whole thing, being bilingual is almost standard in South Africa so everyone knows 2 of the 4 verses with ease.
@@thatmessy132 being bilingual is normal all over the world exceot for the USA and China
One of my friend is from kwazulu-natal.
Love from India
KwaZulu Natal (where your friend is from) has a bigger population of Indian people in the world AFTER India itself...
He said me that he is from a small town of madadeni. But he speak nice hindi.
Hi I am from the Caribbean, there are three Islands that speak a language called Papiamentu or Papiamento, Curaçao, Bonaire and Aruba. The most people are black Caribbean mixed because we were colonized by Netherlands. These Islands are not so known around the world, I hope through this way, our beautiful Islands could be known.
I know carcao.. Some people visited our shores here in Cape Town
I can't wait to be there after this pandemic. Love from Brazil 🇧🇷🇿🇦
Lekker man
Hay ,awesome episode ,was one of the people to request RSA .Please keep up the good work !love from the western cape
Fogweet S.A 😘
Next states of Mexico or provinces of China
Thanks for this. As a South African I appreciate the effort put forward 🌈
Limpopo used to be called Northern Province, its capital Polokwane was also used Pietersburg until 2005.
Geography Now is the best! 😃👍
Jade Cummings indeed
I think he should do this after the Z country finish
jay, you get an approval from me, which is an honor few get to boast
hi checking in from western cape i loved the video
SAY WHAT?! I did not see this coming. Glad to see SA getting some coverage.
Also the clicks were pronounced pretty well
North West was formally like the Las Vegas of South Africa but not so much anymore, the reason being was that the provinces have a certain level of autonomy around their rules and Gauteng had a gambling ban for many many years.
I've been attracted to SA because of how diverse it is. I'd love to go there some day and learn either Afrikaans or Xhosa.
Hugs to SA. 🇿🇦🖤
It's supposedly a nightmare place full of racism and violence
azitock is correct
@@wiseye61
If you're going to the rurals or obviously dangerous areas at night.
@@eve_avery The cities are the most dangerous. I would rather go to a cozy agrarian village than the violent cities.
@@wiseye61
At night.
Only thing you'll get is petty thieves and con-artists every so often.
Super violent crimes out on the streets from my expierience is rare.
As in rurals i mean ghettos. Woops
But if you have money, you won't really have a problem avoiding the bad stuff, it's easy to have a good holiday at sites.
I'm actually so impressed by how good he is at xhosa click sounds
you should do the states of germany at one point? :>
Can't wait about bavaria
puca those are unitary not federal states
@@KanyeTheGayFish69 i know
puca the uk is a unitary state, so it would make more sense to do the video with England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland.
Bro as a white South African who speaks a bit of Xhosa I'd say as an American you did extremely well with the pronunciation of the clicks!! Well done
Cricket fans know the South African cities !!!
😎😎 right👍
When you get to the South Africa episode you should mention the Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden!
Now I'm super proud, u really put the effort into your work and it's amazing. Proudly South African and by the way u nailed the clicks.
I'm from the Free State, Bloemfontein!
Bulawayo, Matabeleland!
Thanks Paul, as a South African you actually did well with the languages. Well done. Looking forward to the full South African episode. Rob from Cape Town
Nelspruit is amazing, so close to the Kruger and the drive in from Jo berg is breathtaking as you pass the humongous rolling hills
Yaayy, SA :) is it just me, or is that a photo of Cape Town when he's talking about Kwa-Zulu Natal? Also, that Bloemfontein misspelling tho...
i really don't understand why this show doesn't have more viewers ...
@puca LITERALLY, THAT'S THE WORLD WE ARE LIVING IN NOW
@puca YES!
Hello from South Africa 🇿🇦
I love this 🤞🏽 ♥️
5:00 you are talking about KZN but have a picture of Cape Town, which is in Western Cape
Do Province Of Indonesia Pls
Why does Indonesia have so many provinces? I would be wiser if he talked about each island as a whole.
@@epsilonjay4123 So what about "islands with more than one province"+"provinces with more than one island"? Indonesia needs to have a stricter criterium, like they did with Russia. There are just too many subdivisions.
Alvin_ Anika_Putra sooo many province
lol India has a state Uttar Pradesh with 204 milion people.
And that is after spliting it into two!
This really makes me want to visit South Africa
What the hell Uncle Ruckus😂😂 Vanilla Milkshake, don't listen to him. You'll have an amazing experience in South Africa, and that is guaranteed!😇
Beautiful country, flawed of course, come to the “Mother city” and Johannesburg, skip all of the tourist traps, like the safari tours
Their world famous xenophobia is scary though.
@@pietrojenkins6901 Xenophobia is generally only a problem in very poor areas like informal settlements (slums). It won't effect you as a tourist.
Pietro Jenkins soooo Cape Town as a white person would be too dangerous?
Impressivvvvvee!!!!. Your pronunciations are on point
You did a fantastic job with the pronunciations my dude! Im from SA and you even made me learn more about my own country. Well done
I used to live just under the Outeniqua Mountains for most of my childhood and never realised how beautiful they were until I left the country
Please do prefectures of japan
Everyone kinda has Khoi san in them in South Africa due to mixing the coloured, Tswana and xhosa are the ones that have more khoisan in them
But most black people wouldn't acknowledge the fact that coloured people are predominantly Khoi-San too
Nah they look more white than khoi to me
@@teawanpaul6208 but the ones in Northen cape look khoi
@@REMOFILWEremoo there was an experiment a few years ago, they found that only 2% of the coloured population had European genes and most people with more than 60% Khoi-San DNA were found in coloured than Tswana or Xhosa
@@REMOFILWEremoo nah majority of coloureds in N.Cape are San or at least a mixture of San and Khoi-khoi. You can see in the names of towns and villages like Namaqua land and Griqualand
5:15 So _VeggieTales_ was right - you do eat bunnies on a plate!
(And yes, I know they were talking about chocolate bunnies, but come on - I was clearly making a joke.)
I'm Pedi, which is N.Sotho from Limpopo. Enjoyed watching this.
Hey beautiful!
Barbs, just a correction there are actually 4 main races, including Indians which were brought by the British during colonialism, a few Indian politicians were involved with Mandela in the fight against apartheid such as Ahmed Kathrada, Dr Abu Bakr asvat , etc :)
There should actually be 5, the Khoisan are their own race. It's like how Indians and Chinese people are different races, while still being from Asia, you know?
and the Cape Malays often forgotten as they these days mostly identify as coloured, but actually are quite different in origins and religion.
well as a south african ive never seen an official state document having an open tick box under race for khoisan, we would classify them under black in racial categorization (which i have no opinion on, race is a problem area in the country)
@@mahomedahmedseedat3670 The Khoisan themselves have argued that they've been unjustly placed in the Coloured category (as many Coloured people have a very large amount of Khoisan ancestry), and that they aren't the same race as the Bantu derived South Africans. And honestly, by all intents and purposes, they aren't. I don't mean like culturally, or how they look, I mean genetics wise, they're further from me (a black person) than I am to you.
But I am a foreigner after all, the best way to know about the ins and outs of South African society is to ask South Africans.
They black
lol @ Lesotho and eSwatini. I do feel that they must unite with us (Namibia and Botswana too due to common monetary policies, in Namibia's case, and common market).
(Though Namibia has a different occurrence of ethnic groups, such as the Herero, and the northern peoples related to those in Angola.)
Such a scenario would be pretty awesome!
Imagine what a supercountry like that can accomplish..
I dream of days when all Southern African countries are united into one supercountry....we'd become one of the most powerful countries in the world.
I'm from South Africa , Western Cape we have he longest wine route in the World. and I'm Colored

Love this video so much!! You pronounced all the names perfectly! 🇿🇦 ❤️
Hey Paul (Barby) Thanks for making this video, and especially being sensitive about some situations associated with me (as a South African Afrikaaner) and all other Afrikaaners such as the land claim and etc, and it interesting to see how people react to this video about the certain parts of South Africa, and finally, thank you for educating us including me with the different provinces and their characteristics and cultures.
