Electric marine power is best left to displacement hulls, where hull length will determine vessel speed. Go look at the Yamaha performance bulletins... 25hp... 16' aluminum multispecies boat...1,300lbs plus... GOT ON PLANE, and went just as fast with only 25hp. 50hp Yamaha on a MV1756SC, 1,780lbs fully rigged, 32mph. The boat in the video was a Tracker.... looked like maybe an 1860. That boat is less than 800lbs, couldn't get on plane and couldn't get above 26mph. Does electric power have a place? Sure. In a displacement hull. But when the title of a video says "Fastest electric boat....blah blah blah" you can't blame others who point out that there are better alternatives.
I need something like this in a small fiberglass boat with jack plate, stainless prop, stepped transom, big pad, and a little better battery weight distribution! I bet you could get close to 40mph out of it then!
You should move that heavy battery bank closer to the front of the boat...at least just past the middle of the boat...it'll get out of the hole easier & the back of the boat won't be so low in the water...

That's pretty cool stuff, right there. What is the noise of the electric motor like, compared to a gas equivalent? I'm guessing the sound of the wind, when you're on plane, makes it all about the same? How many hours of run-time are you calculating? I may have missed that in the video.
So with this battery setup we expected 1hr to 1 1/2 hrs of full run time. After we got back from trial run, Nathan ran some tests on the batteries. New calculations are looking more like 2-3hrs of continuous wide open run time. The noise is very distinct, however I don't feel like it's worse than a gas motor by any means. Not nearly as loud, and not as annoying to hear run all the time
I bet putting the batteries straight down the middle, adding an adjustable-height jack plate, with tilt & trim, and playing with the pitch on the prop will get you over 30mph.

I was curious about electric boats...a friend of mine has a 30 foot twin pontoon with a 3.0L V6 inboard/outboard. It can get up to 19 MPH, has a 20 gallon gas tank and gets ~2 MPG
So i love the build but as Safety goes Do you think running a panther electric steer for something that was built for a kicker motor going no more than 5 or 6 miles an hour is safe to run at that speed I don't see a good recovery rate if the boat were to get out of control

I keep playing over in my head that recent viral video where the guy in the ranger took off for a tournament and the boat caught and he hit the bank...haha
I dont really see the benefit in more weight and cost over gasoline engines? I would imagine the long term maintenance would be alot more inconvenient as well. If you do the math the electric system is about triple the size/weight. As far as "electric only" lakes, if they keep onto this tech they will eventually just HP cap those "electric only" lakes? I feel like the tech just isnt there yet. As a mechanic, it still seems alot more dangerous, more expensive and more heavy. When you factor everything into play, all of the key points are still drawbacks to combustion motors. Much like home solar, when its calculated out, there really arent any savings over grid tied electric in the long run due to how expensive high voltage battery technology is to obtain and maintain. This is also why we dont see the conversion to electric cars yet, they are too expensive and less profit is generated in production.
Hello folks, yeah, I'm an admirer of your electric motor boat, I like the idea of the longest possible boat that I might be able to get my hands on, for all these videos that I have been researching and watching everyone doing their stuff, hay that's all cool and well entended, but I've noticed something about the way the boats from the video's camera lens, even though you folks are 14,16,18,and even a possible 20ft or what ever you can get your hands on, I really don't know what is in my future, I live in a house that is 22ft x30ft, and I do hopefully have a good idea of what a 20ftr boat looks like, I like the under ground battery system and BMS, that you have to balance the system out with, but with those video camera lenses, those 16,18, n 20ft boats don't look that big, but on the other hand, just how much dam speed do you really need just to high tail it out to that possible favorite spot, hay , guess what guys, I think you all need to wait a few extra moments of time, you will eventually get there, you don't really need a ocean going cruising high speed boat to out there, your 50hp electric motor and your 20,24, n 30mph looks plenty fast enough, but what I can't understand is, why is the standard boat system only go up a possible 18,20, I prefer a flat bottom boat, I just like the idea of a 20,24 ft with your electric system,

a terrific example of what not to do and why people die in boats. Not a single life jacket was worn on a experimental boat. The max weight on a grizzly 1860 is 940lbs. That's before all the modifications. The boats overloaded before a single person got in. That panther electric steering is not for high hp motors. That alone is dangerous AF.
I agree on the life jackets. They were in the boat but 100% should have been on. Dont agree with the weight being overloaded before anyone was in it...? As far as I know, the owner spoke with panther electric steering before purchase to find out what was recommended. Although if this was mine, I dont think I would have that on. Could you just hook up a good generator to the motor and provide the electrical current that is needed for the motor? I know the reasoning is to not have a combustible engine but I was just thinking that the batteries have to be really expensive and the more you use them the less life they have.

I’ve been in the market for an electric outboard and watching all the videos I can on Elco motors. I’d love to see an independent comparison test of a few 10hp gas motors against the “10hp” Elco and again for the 20hp motors.

It takes too much space in such a small boat and it's got to be heavy as well which will make the engine burn the juice faster and the boat will go slower too because of all that weight. Ain't make too much sense. The top speed of my Yamaha 50 HP 4 stroke is 34 MPH!
Impressive, but WOW the cost will be atleast $15-$20K for motor and batteries. Most electric only or idle speed only lakes have no wake rules too. Extremely cool concept but I can't see it being efficient for cost or usage for most EO tournaments.
This is a valid point. This type of setup is not a viable option for most people. We have done a lot with Electric Outboards since the posting of this video. Ill have more content on these soon
“50hp “ and it did mid 20’s ha ! I have a 16x56 with a real 50hp and it does 1 44 and it probably cost a 1/4 of that boat . Hell my brother has a 1448 with a newer 20 merc and it’ll do faster than that boat loaded with 3 guys and decoys , Plus all the other bs you need to duck hunt ! No thanks .
I get your point, however your boat would not be allowed in the lakes around here due to being electric only reservoirs. That adds to why this is pretty spectacular. Most guys with 16' and a 10hp electric outboard are only going 7-9mph 10 if they are lucky
What's the length of this particular boat, TH-cam information is only as accurate as anyone being as respectable honest and as detailed as possible, I'm just looking for the longest possible John boat that can be battery powered, why have a ski boat, if all you want is a fishing boat,
This is awesome, but there is no way that motor is capable of 50HP. Seriously, for the money you put into it you should get 50HP like Elco claims it is. 50HP is 50HP, it's not some made up number. This is barely 20HP. Elco should send you half your money back.
It should cost more to insure eventually when electric outboards are mainstream and there are many old ones as there is more potential for death with high voltage and water and especially aging parts. I think they charge way too much for those Elco outboards and they should be at least real with the hp numbers.
I guess paddles are a clear necessity .. not enough run time for me - imagine the earth that had to be mined to make those environmentally friendly batteries!
I’ll go with a diesel outboard long before I go electric. The technology just isn’t ready for prime time and there is not infrastructure support for fast charging. I’ll be burning Dino juice for a long time before electric replaced any ICE for primary propulsion.
About exciting as watching wet paint dry, I’ll keep my tried and true two stroke that will run all day without a fuss and if I run out of gas I’ll pump in some more and keep running. Electric outboards, no thanks, the performance of that thing is on par with a turd.
Jan 6 was "Wall Street Putsch" part 2 I’ll never go to an electric only lake, buy or run a 4 stroke, or own anything electric that should be powered by a gas engine. Electric outboards, weed eaters, mowers, cars is a big nope for me.

Not really. Those lithium batteries probably only weigh 20-30 pounds a piece. Probably just a heavy as 3 lead acid with the amount they have in there.

Question about framing. Could I make a frame out of only 1/16” angle aluminum and it be strong enough? Or would I need to use 1/8”?

It takes too much space in such a small boat and it's got to be heavy as well which will make the engine burn the juice faster and the boat will go slower too because of all that weight. Ain't make too much sense. The top speed of my Yamaha 50 HP 4 stroke is 34 MPH!

This is a valid point. This type of setup is not a viable option for most people. We have done a lot with Electric Outboards since the posting of this video. Ill have more content on these soon

I get your point, however your boat would not be allowed in the lakes around here due to being electric only reservoirs. That adds to why this is pretty spectacular. Most guys with 16' and a 10hp electric outboard are only going 7-9mph 10 if they are lucky

This is awesome, but there is no way that motor is capable of 50HP. Seriously, for the money you put into it you should get 50HP like Elco claims it is. 50HP is 50HP, it's not some made up number. This is barely 20HP. Elco should send you half your money back.
It should cost more to insure eventually when electric outboards are mainstream and there are many old ones as there is more potential for death with high voltage and water and especially aging parts. I think they charge way too much for those Elco outboards and they should be at least real with the hp numbers.
I guess paddles are a clear necessity .. not enough run time for me - imagine the earth that had to be mined to make those environmentally friendly batteries!
I’ll go with a diesel outboard long before I go electric. The technology just isn’t ready for prime time and there is not infrastructure support for fast charging. I’ll be burning Dino juice for a long time before electric replaced any ICE for primary propulsion.

About exciting as watching wet paint dry, I’ll keep my tried and true two stroke that will run all day without a fuss and if I run out of gas I’ll pump in some more and keep running. Electric outboards, no thanks, the performance of that thing is on par with a turd.

The majority of our lakes are electric only reservoirs. A lot of companies are moving to electric.
Jan 6 was "Wall Street Putsch" part 2 I’ll never go to an electric only lake, buy or run a 4 stroke, or own anything electric that should be powered by a gas engine. Electric outboards, weed eaters, mowers, cars is a big nope for me.
