Making a Fizzgig Puppet | From The Dark Crystal

  • Another world. Another time. In the Age of Hot Glue. I made a Fizzgig puppet inspired by the Jim Henson movie The Dark Crystal! Or maybe it's just a relation of Fizzgig. I don't think the roar is quite right. Watch me argue with aluminum foil and fight with faux fur in an epic battle to create a fuzzball with a ton of teeth!

    ----------------------
    Basic Tools & Materials used:
    Aluminum foil
Some sort of container to form the head shape onto
    Masking tape
    Ruler
    Permanent marker
Hobby knife (use a very sharp blade to cut the foam)
Cutting mat (should be used more than I did)
Plastic cling film (a thin plastic bag would work)
    Duct tape (use cheap stuff)
    Scissors
    1/2" soft cushion foam
    Straight pins
    Gloves
Contact cement (use a respirator and very good ventilation with the nasty stuff)
Clamp to open contact cement (optional)
Some sort of covering for your work surface
    Pencil
    Cake (optional)
    Paper
Acid-free matboard (you could use cardboard as a less expensive alternative but you might want to glue a few layers together to make it more stiff)
Corrugated cardboard (or anything like that to use as a template)
Hot glue and hot glue gun (I use a silicone mat to keep from burning my work surface)
    Muslin cloth
4mm/0.4cm Craft/EVA foam (white used for tongue, teeth and nose)
2mm Craft/EVA foam (I used white for the back teeth and red for the uvula but you could use white and paint it)
Rotary tool with rough sanding drum attachment (use a dust mask - dust collection would be good)
    60 grit sandpaper
    CA glue
    Parchment paper
Fine grit sandpaper (I used 220 to refine the teeth and the nose)
Painter's tape (or some other low-tack tape)
PVA glue (I used Mod Podge but it left things a bit tacky - I might try something else as a top coat)
    Paintbrush
Water (in some sort of container)
    Small, fuzzy cat (optional)
Craft paint and a palette (white, yellow, red, black, gold)
    Tweezers
    1/2"/12.7mm wood plug
Brown felt or fabric (I ended up switching to fabric for the final version)
    Seam gauge/small sewing ruler
    4" Faux gorilla fur
Magic wand and magic (only use after many classes and perhaps full certification)
Leather paperweights (recommended but you could use something else to weigh the pattern down)
    Fabric paint (brown, black)
    Mixing cup
Mixing stick (I used a palette knife)
An old toothbrush (don't steal your brother's)
(you don't really want to use this method - maybe try an airbrush)
    Patience
    More patience
Hot hairdryer (to set the fabric paint - you could maybe carefully use a heat gun but don't melt the fabric)
    Brush
    Safety pins
    Sewing clip clamp thingies
Sewing thread and needle (use whatever thread color is closest to the base color of your fur)
Brown fabric for the mouth opening
Brown fuzzyish fabric for the gums (I used this for the final version of the eyes too)
Seam ripper (hopefully you don't need this)
    Sketchbook
    Hands
    Brain
    Lots of squishes and boops
Whatever Fizzgigs eat (anyone know? Bacon seems to be working so far)
    ----------------------
As with any project there are multiple techniques, materials and tools that can be applied. This video just shows what I did for this specific project. Enjoy!

I am so glad you love him! And his name would sound lovely with a French accent!

This is _soooo_ weird. I continue to find videos on how to make a Fizzgig (and yours is the best I've seen), but not *one* review on the Chronicle Collectibles Fizzgig 1:1 puppet replica. It's like _no one_ knows it exists. It's an amazing puppet replica, and one hell of a good price on GameStop.

Perhaps not everyone is interested in purchasing a replica, or if they are they aren't interested in posting a review video? Thank you though!

As an artist, why not forgo the amazingly long hours with making this and just buy the replica? Like, holy shit, you put an *incredible* amount of work into this. It kinda blows my mind with the dedication you put into this project. It's hard for me to image as an artist that I'd rather make my own, when a great one is already available to purchase for cheap.

Thank you for appreciating the work that went into this. For me, I'm a maker. I'm always going to prefer to make a thing if I can. I enjoy the process of making as much as having the end product. Sometimes more! I also enjoy making videos about the process to entertain and maybe pass on some tips about how I made it in case someone else wants to make that thing. Or maybe someone can use some of the techniques to make something completely different. Every piece I make lets me learn something new or refine a skill. I get to grow and expand my knowledge and expertise all the time. That's a lot of fun for me! That's not going to happen by me buying a cheap puppet in a store.

True, though Fizzgig is probably a bit better at catching his own dinner.

Can you make a downloadable pattern for the fizz gig

    • @FigmentsMade
      @FigmentsMade  4 ปีที่แล้ว

I can certainly work on that but keep in mind it was sized for my hand, so it might not work for everyone!

How about mentioning what you liked about the video? Or not saying anything if you don't have anything nice to say? Spreading hate isn't healthy or constructive. Thanks for watching!
