    My years of playing Grasilda the Monster Masher in EDH have finally paid off. Nothing can ever be as complicated as having a Platinum Angel+Seige-gang Commander+Ulamog that is simultaneously in my hand, in an opponent's library, and on the stack. I still don't know exactly how that happened...

      Justin Bruce and here’s something to challenge it, Mishra Self-Replicator being mutated, then token-copied. How the ability work applies to the creature, not just MSR, so you create millions of Mishras that are 3/7 creatures. Or whatever it is.

      @@flyingturret208thecannon5 so the story of the Great Monster-Mash of Dragon's Lair, Austin. It's important to remember that Mashed creatures are considered the same creature in ALL zones.
      I had Griselda and a sac outlet, and mashed my Seige-gang with an opponent's PlatAngel. The next turn cycle, the mono green player discarded the Ulamog to hand size, hoping I could add it to my pile and close out the game (we had been going for 90 minutes by that point)
      The Platinum Angel's controller cast Cyclonic rift to avoid dying to my Monstrosity, and each card that made up the creature was returned to their owner's hands.
      He then brainstormed, put the Platinum Angel in his Library, and cracked a fetch to shuffle it away.
      The game proceeded for another 30 minutes, and the green player was able to build up 22 mana to cast the Creature. After a 25 minute debate, we decided to have someone outside the game search for the Platinum Angel, and put all three in play.

    • @KingBobXVI
      @KingBobXVI 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think the confusing part is mostly just what happens when it leaves the battlefield. Like, "it's one creature" is trivial to understand as long as it's in play. But when it dies? Well, depending on how it leaves the battlefield, and what death or LTB triggers exist, you can get some interesting and non-intuitive results. One creature died but 5 entered the graveyard, but you get 5 LTB triggers? I guess that works... kind of. The Mimic Vat example is especially odd, since it normally only imprints one creature.

    • @araamahasla555
      @araamahasla555 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I don't know what that "typeless permanent" means here, gods are enchantment creatures and when they don't have enough devotion they are not a creature, which leaves only enchantment part. Cards that interact with enchantments interact with inactive gods (like Pharikas libation). On the technical side gods on arena work like they are affected with invisible hexproof mutant of Pacifism type card that removes "creature" type from its victims which makes them only visually change zones and when certain condition (devotion) met it is lifted so they are creatures again. I'm saying that because when games end inactive gods jump into creature zone for a moment. One with the Stars acts in the same way. Wonders of coding, eh?

    • @Anaxiamander
      @Anaxiamander 4 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      Ara Amahasla The typeless permanent mentioned above would be what happens when a Theros god is mutated over. As the top card’s only type is likely creature, and the Theros god devotion effect removes the creature type, you end up with a permanent that is not a land, enchantment, artifact, or creature; it is typeless.

    I’m really excited for a ton of individual cards from this set - probably even moreso than I’ve had for the past couple of releases - but overall this set just feels like an absolute mess in terms of mechanics and rules implications. Mutate has a ton of nonsensical and unintuitive interactions mentioned by PK in the video; Companion is a nightmare of a mechanic in Commander where the rules literally had to be bent to make it function, and it’s poorly designed across all formats in that many of the requirements are automatically met for certain decks or entire formats; and keyword counters, while really cool in theory and in digital, are going to be an absolute mess to keep track of - especially with abilities in this set that dump sometimes up to five, six, or more of them onto multiple creatures on your board, or in EDH when we’ve already got dozens and dozens of other counters to worry about even without all these evergreen counters thrown into the mix. Like I said, super pumped to slot a bunch of these individual cards into various decks. Not at all excited about the set as a whole and its implications for paper Magic.

    I wish I shared your view PK that Magic will probably be ok! It all feels a bit Yu-gi-oh to me and I've met plenty of MTG players, particularly on the EDH scene, who are basically refugees from Yu-gi-oh and if you ask them why they bailed will talk about how power creep and complexity got too much in that game for them. I've also rapidly come round to your way of thinking about WOTC's treatment of paper magic. As a minimum it seems that WOTC are fairly relaxed about the impact of increased admin load on paper magic and the detrimental effect on games. The thing is though - and this isWOTCs biggest mistake here - the games continued success needs paper magic. The success of the game and it's monopoly position are down to the network of spaces to play, spaces where people come together and make new friends. It sounds sentimental, but look at the success of EDH, and the whole social contract.... I'm rambling here, but the social contract just doesn't hold up in the digital world!

    Also, the EDH rules committee is currently ruling that if your commander is in a mutate pile, regardless where in the pile it is, that mutant pile still deals commander damage.

    A fun thing I heard is if you have a stack of mutated creatures with
    Ilharg, the Raze-Boar (or one of the God Eternals) and it dies or gets exiled....the whole stack goes third from the top with it. The whole stack goes whever the rules text of the cards sends it. Same applies if you have a Serra Avatar or another critter that gets reshuffled into your library upon death.

    the theros god idea does drum up a really interesting idea.
    just mutate one boi with lots of 'enchantment-like' effects, make sure top card is in a colour that rarely is a target for cards. then the only things that can target it is 'target permenant', or 'target non-land permenant'
    becuase its not a creature or enchantment. its just a...thing that exists.
    also can you mutate a land that is considered a creature? does it become a mana dork?

Having to keep track of a +1/+1 counter, a double strike counter, and a flying counter in fnm and which cards got what seems like a really easy way for people to screw up intentionally or not. And another thing, if Hasbro wants wizards to push arena they need to make some major updates to the usability and push it on mobile devices. It's been out for so long and as far as I know there's still no friends list!

  • @Dracontes

    I have little issue with mutate in a vacuum. Reading the card explains what it does as the truism goes. It's the interactions with other game actions that had me wondering. This might have been something, like keyword counters, they should have introduced earlier on when there was less baggage mechanic-wise to process.
    As for Crystalline Giant, while I didn't care for Forsythe being glib on Twitter about rolling "one of the myriad d20s that we have lying around",* a solution that doesn't involve dice is to pick a suitable number of cards from your collection, each with one of the relevant bits of text, and put them aside on a pile. Then, whenever the ability triggers, shuffle them, fan them out face-down and ask your opponent to pick their poison ;) It's fair this can be difficult for people with a small or tight collection.
    * In full disclosure, for half of my stint with MTG, I didn't even know what a local game store was. I bought my cards at bookstores, so good luck finding dice for sale. I looked today and I don't think even now I could get those easily.

    • @Dracontes

      @@DT-ce1fb From a board game I had a d6, chipped. True enough, at the time I started with Magic, high school required a TI-83 calculator for Math, which could be used as an RNG.
      However you do have to allow for people to only have access to the cards and reasonably available objects like coins. Expecting people to always have access to dice, fancy calculators, or the Internet when they want to play isn't as reasonable as you'd like to think.
      That said, I do think people could exercise a bit more creativity working around these issues.

    I've noticed a lot of creators mentioning in their spoiler videos that the spoiler was provided for free. What the actual codpiece is this? It seems like a massive cheek that WotC would get someone to do free advertising for them and then make they say that like WotC are doing them some kind of favour. I get that content creators get something out of the deal in terms of traffic to their channel, but WotC's benefit FAR outweighs that.

  • @kriosuranous3440
    @kriosuranous3440 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    I would like to bring up that you mutating the leosaur onto Krenko isn’t that useful. Once you mutate the card onto Krenko, they become the same creature, so Krenko is no longer “another creature”, and therefore wouldn’t get the boost.

  • @franciscop631
    @franciscop631 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Idk if someone has already said this but regal leosaur says OTHER creatures, and the word "this" Is subtitute for whatever the name of the creature is at that moment, so if you mutate on krenko then krenko wont get the anthom effect cause he is causing the effect, ergo krenko is this creature mutating.

    If you mutate 2 regal leosaur together you only get +2/+1 not +4/+2 as the one you are mutating becomes a single creature with both abilities. In order to get the +4/+2 you would then need to mutate any 3rd card onto the double leosuar mutation to trigger the two abilities on the mutated card

  • @andreww479
    @andreww479 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    i kinda wish they had given the cards a different, objectively bad, layout with the p/t in the middle of the card where the mutate box ends so that the only p/t you can see in the pile is the top card, even if the top card is a regular creature you would still only see its p/t and overall it would have been easier to read. It would look like ass but would be much easier to play with
