  • Tia Carrere is a Filipino actress and singer who won the world’s hearts most notably for her role as Cassandra Wong in Wayne’s World. Excited to “finally play Filipino,” Tia breaks down what it means for her to play Tita Teresa, a Filipino character that speaks Tagalog. Just one of the many legendary Filipino American entertainers featured in the film, Tia was happy to lend her talent to a movie that will go down in history. Jo Koy’s new movie Easter Sunday is playing at a theater near you! Make sure to support in its opening weekend by bringing your friends and family to watch and buy your tickets here: bit.ly/3QlVN7h

It’s pretty surreal that we’re in a Hollywood movie, but as a Filipino American, I’ve noticed the effect this movie has been on me in terms of dealing with my 1st gen mom in a positive way. I used to be super annoyed with the “parinig” and “paramdam”, but it’s just so engrained in the culture that I just realized I have to adjust. And so I’ve been less stressed with that. I saw these things while this movie was on the big screen in front of my face.😂 Glad it’s not a chinese movie anymore representing my culture but a legit FILIPINO movie. Congrats!

Of course JL also had surge in big titles in 2022 from the final Halloween movie and also everything/where all at once with another Asian legend Michelle Yeoh. I think both should lead a movie again 1 final time if the script suits again. Haha.

It's time for Pinoys in Hollywood to shine! Full support to Easter Sunday and hopefully a part 2 will shoot next.

You should know that the Tita Teresa part was really intended for Sharon Cuneta who tested a false positive for Covid which was required for all actors in the show. As a result, the part went to Tia even when Sharon got several negatives after the initial testing. This truly devastated Sharon who lost an important role in the film.

I’m amazed that a movie that’s supposed to be a Celebration of The Filipino American Experience has created some divisions within the Community itself and it may come to the Societal and Political Divisions that exist here but more significantly that exist in the Philippines itself! If you aren’t Filipino you may not understand that not all Filipinos embrace Manny Pacquio and Many more Affluent Filipinos look down on the lower class and even some of the lower end Middle Class! There is more Stratification in our Community than most people want to think!

The truth is most Spaniards who came to the Philippines are from Andalucia, Basque Region, and Madrid. Greeks from Malta, as well as Italians from Sardinia, arrived with them; then the French from Gibraltar and Camargue migrated to the Philippines too and the Portuguese settled in many provinces too. These people started to call themselves “FILIPINOS.” They wanted to break away from the power of the KING OF SPAIN. Only those “Castilians, Argentinians and Mexicans are loyal to the king during that time.” They studied and learned all the native dialects in the country; they mixed the Spanish creoles “Ermiteño and Basque Caviteño” with the local dialects and created the “TAGALA” known as TAGALOG. The Native locals of the country were called “ INDIOS.” They thought they were similar to the Incans, Aztecs, and Pacific Islanders.”

Looks of Filipinas are DIFFERENT: Morena (Spanish brown Gypsy); Mestiza (White skin); Asiatica (Native Filipina); Am-Girl (The ASIAN-PACIFIC feature is strong despite having a white dad); Chinita (Almond-eyed) and Mulatto (dark or brown skin).

The Philippines was a colony of Spain for 336 years in the middle it became FRENCH territory for two years then 5 years of British colonization next five years of Dutch rule and became an AMERICAN territory for 52 years. During World War 2, Jewish arrived then Russians fled here to escape Lenin and Middle Easterns at the time of Iraq-Iranian war hid here. MOST OF THEM INTERMARRIED WITH THE NATIVES. NOW, MANY OVERSEAS FILIPINO WORKERS ARE MARRYING EUROPEANS, AUSTRALIANS, LATINOS AND AMERICANS.
