I just wanted to say THANK YOU! I am in Minneapolis Minnesota with my newborn son and girlfriend. I live in Cincinnati Ohio and needed to get home for thanksgiving. And.......My car wouldn't get heat. I watched your video and followed the steps (finished at 3a.m.-in 10° blistering cold) and will now be able to go home in time, THANKS A MILLION!!!
You probably dont care but if you're bored like me during the covid times then you can stream pretty much all of the new movies and series on instaflixxer. I've been watching with my brother for the last months :)
DeathScouter - Thank you so, so much for your help and video. My 16 year daughter had no heat coming out of her heater. I did exactly as you directed and IT WORKED AWESOME!!! You saved (this single mother) tons of money and provided my little girl with heat. I can not thank you enough for taking the time and effort to help out with your video.... Your efforts are noticed and so, so greatly appreciated. It's kind souls like you taking the time to make these types of videos that help out people like me how so note mechanically enkindled. THANK YOU!!!! : )
Wow, what a great note. Thank you so much for your kind words. As a father of 2 (with a bank account trying to recover from private schools and now 2 college expenses) I know what it takes to keep things "running" and trying to get by. SURE, my camera work gets lots of complaints, but I do my best. I'm so glad you find my videos helpful. If you need help with anything else, let me know and I'll investigate it for you.
Madame, if you want to be an awesome mother never allow your child to come into possession of a Chrysler product again. Either stick with Toyota, Honda or Ford. Even Fords can be a pain as they put great effort into their planned obsolescence.
Flushing heater cores is awesome to do even when you don't have a problem. If your not getting heat this,is,your first and easiest fix. 2nd would be to check your thermostat and see if it is stuck open.
Hey Scouter, I just bought a 2002 liberty a few months ago. Now that the cold weather is apon us here in Baltimore, I have very little heat. Just wanted to say thanks for the video Scouter. I'm going to give it a shot. I'm in Rosedale, if I have any problems I give you a holler. Lol 😲 HELP!!!!
Hate to tell you, but its VERY common in Jeeps for the "blend doors" to be broken. Once your Libby engine warms up, feel both hoses going to the heater core. If 1 is notably cooler than the other, then you probably have a clog. If they are both equally hot, then the heater core isn't a problem, and you probably need to look at the Blend Door Actuator or the Blend Door hinges themselves. UNFORTUNATELY, that requires a FULL dash disassembly to get to the HVAC ducts (unless you watch a few other videos on here and want to cut a hole in the HVAC ducts to manually move the blend doors). Stay in touch. I'm happy to help you since you're local
Hi scouter. Im guessing my blend doors are bad. Both core hoses are equally hot after driving. When i flushed the core i had clear water from both sides. Now my question: is there a way to remove only part of the dash ? I notice a seam or division of some sort to the left of the glovebox. Can the dash be removed only to that point ? Or is there easier access to the doors ?? Thanks. Love your vids. My libby is 03 by the way
i would like to add here that if this doesn't work, you can also get a heater core cleaner that you let sit over night the eat sediment off the sides of the coils. you may have flow but if there is sediment on the walls of the coil not allowing heat transfer.
Just wanted to say thanks for the video! Going to be flushing my heater core this weekend along with a thermostat change. Let me know how that blender door goes! May have to do that as well!
Flushing the core and topping off the fluid DID fix the immediate problem. However, Jeeps are NOTORIOUS for losing heat as a result of the "air mixture doors" breaking on the INSIDE of the vent system. These are the doors that open & close when you move the temperature knob on the dashboard and allow/disallow air to flow over the heater core (or not) and route cold/hot air into the vents. There are 2 doors (1 over the other) that tend to break in the middle of the hinge. These JUST broke (Dec 2013) so I'll be doing a video on fixing these soon.
I'm not understanding how running water through the heater core fixes the issue. Isn't fluid running through these lines all the time anyway and wouldn't that unclog and blockage?
Annony Mouse No, your coolant system could be loaded with a lot of rust and corrosion (especially in cars where they use water or a weak antifreeze mixture). If you circulate enough "gunk", the small capillaries that make up the heater core could clog. That's why flushing (and back flushing) is a valid troubleshooting step.... and it doesn't cost you anything! If you get good water flow, then you'll know. :)
+DeathScouter Did you ever do a video on fixing the blend doors? My 2012 Libby was not heating last week until I'd throw it back to cold first. Now it isn't heating at all. It feels like it is just stuck on cold. TIA
Look up videos on changing the heater core. That will give you an idea of the task. It is not for the timid or inexperienced. It is expensive but not a rip off. A rip off would be if they flushed the system and charged you for a heater core.
Will flushing the heater core fix engine overheating? I've already changed Radiator, Radiator Fan, Thermostat and Water Pump and it still keeps over heating.. there are no leaks either
Hello, my 2002 Jeep Liberty Sport has quit heating, not good time as our Polar Vortex hits in MT, lol, so did checking on line. We took it to local Mieneke , they said heater core needed flushed, might as well change it, lol 1,000 plus part cost. After watching your video it looks pretty simple to flush, all an all its been a good running vehicle. Wishing I had a garage, I'd do it myself, seems the mechanics in the shop, and at dealership want to make some money, lol I caint afford those prices, how can I find a honest person to do this for me without raking me over the coals. It's been very upsetting to me. We all got problems, my moms got OVC ovarian cancer, did BRCA testing three of us daughters positive, did screening, did preventive opps, removing ovaries, found BC in my middle sister, I drive 60 miles or so to get back home from where I live to be at moms, dad had operation begining of Nov 60 miles from there, took mom up there, and no heat. hubby said oh Ill look at it, but storm hit. Now, driving car with barley no heat. Soooooo upsetting to have peeps tell me 1,000 dollars to replace heater core, wowza cried off an on at work yesterday. How do I explain to someone it looks pretty simple to flush, and their prices are horrific compared to watching what you did. : (
If it really only needs to be flushed, then you can certainly do this yourself. Also make sure you have enough antifreeze in the tank. "No heat" in a Jeep could also be due to broken "blend doors" in your air system. The blend doors are what divert hot air through the core, or cold air from the A/C, into the cabin. If you turn your A/C temp knob from cold to hot, you should hear the doors move and/or detect a significant change in temperature. These break A LOT in Jeeps, and if they are broken, you're looking at pulling out the entire dashboard to get to the A/C vent system. Mine are broken, but haven't gotten around to fixing it yet because it's a bigger job than I want to do deal with. I never heard of changing a heater core unless it's leaking. Check the obvious yourself before giving someone that much money.
You're clogged pretty bad if the pressure of a garden hose forward/back can't flush any water through. Your last chance before having to change the heater core may be to reconnect the hoses and pour a chemical flushing compound in and run it for a week or so. However, you'll need to do a full flush on the radiator and change the fluid (replacing all the antifreeze).
got a similar problem in my Jeep Liberty, no heat coming out, however now my engine overheats after a few miles. The heat some times come on for a few seconds but then goes away. Any ideas?
+Vicarious Fan Overheating... you need to check your thermostat and/or water pump. The thermostat is so cheap, go ahead and replace it. Just be sure you don't put it on upside down/backwards.
+Vicarious Fan Hey man....based on the severity of the situation you're describing, I'm going to change my diagnosis to 99%"water pump". Here's another guy's video showing a problem that sounds exactly like what you've described. th-cam.com/video/93zalzGYKQI/w-d-xo.html
I'm not getting heat either but the RPM doesn't seem to matter, no heat at any speed. Is this the heater core possibly or could the thermostat have something to do with my lack of heat?
No heat at all? Put your hands on the lines into heater core and see if they are hot or not. If the input line is hot and the output isn't, your core is clogged. If the lines aren't hot, they yes I'd suspect that the thermostat is preventing hot water from flowing. If they are BOTH hot, then you're clearly getting heat to the heater core, you may have a broken "blend door" or "blend door actuator" inside the dash that is keeping air from flowing through the heater core. Change your dashboard setting from hot/cold... cold/hot and see if you hear the blend doors open/close. Broken blend doors are very common on Jeeps and sadly, require pulling the whole dashboard apart. BUT... 1 step at a time... let's find out if you're getting heat into the core first.
DeathScouter Thanks, I'll try the first steps and see if that corrects the issue. I can hear the actuators moving when I get down and listen after moving the heat settings from cold to hot and vice versa.
Not very noticeable since I had decent flow through the core, but if it had been clogged, then it stands to reason I would have had much better heat transfer.
+Omar Flores I have never tried using air but with water, you'd have the visual of how well the "flow" is through the heater core. I'm inclined to believe that you won't get as thorough cleaning with air as if you used a water hose.
Hey there, had a question... because I know my mechanic told me replacing the heater core was $600+ cuz of pulling the whole dash apart, I appreciate this video because he charged me $40 each time he flushed mine. Sad thing is, its not really working b/c the previous owner of my 08 Liberty used stop leak liquid glass and plugged up the heater core BAD. He said he got some gunk flushed out but prob only 5% of the problem. Before I shell out $600+ for him to tear the dash apart to get to the heater core, I might try it again myself. My question: Is it okay to run Rubbing Alcohol through the core first? (The reason I ask is that my son works at a phone store and said they use alcohol to remove liquid glass on phone screens. maybe I can put a few bottles of that stuff through it pretty cheaply and then flush with water? Your thoughts?
My problem is when car running fogs up the front glass, when car stops you can see fogging begining again center ac vent, will a flush take car of it? Do i need a new heater core?
If you're getting moisture through your vents, I'm heavily inclined to believe your core has a leak. Do you smell antifreeze? I'd think you would/should.
Yup, you have a leak. Since replacing the heater core is a pain in the butt, you may want to try some Barr's Stop Leak and see if that helps you. If it does...$10 well spent. If not, then you have a full day of work ahead of you.
No there's no need to flush air out of the line like you would with brake lines. Air will naturally make its way out of the system as antifreeze circulates through. The key is to check your fluid level after you're done and fill it to the appropriate (hot or cold) fill line.
There is a bleeder near the top radiator hose. It’s a screw you can loosen with a hex wrench. Start the engine and losses it enough to let the air bubbles to come out. Re-tighten it when you don’t see any more bubbles come out.
Might wanna just go ahead and replace the coolant thermostat since it may not be fully opening and closing to generate the heat needed for the heater core. I'm right in the middle of flushing the heater core, flushing the entire cooling system, and replacing the thermostat as it all just needed done. Water pump bearing went out and ended up just doing it all in one shot. It's a mess, but dealer wanted $350 for all this work that cost me about $60.
Thanks for this great video but before doing it I have a question. What were the symptoms? Was it blowing cold air when set on heat or was it blowing no air when set on heat ? In my case I have cold air blowing when set on cold, but no air coming out when set on heat (even though I hear the motor trying to blow air). Thanks.
I was only getting heat when I drove (higher RPMs). At idle, the air would become noticeably cooler. I think flushing it was good preventative maintenance, but I ultimately think my problem was simply that the coolant level was low. For your symptoms I would run your Libby until it warms up then pop the hood and feel each of the 2 hoses going into the firewall to/from your heater core. If BOTH hoses are hot, then you know hot antifreeze is flowing IN & OUT of the heater core and the "heat" is making it to the inside of your HVAC ducts. Flushing the core is probably not needed unless 1 hose is noticeably cooler than the other. My guess is that your blend door hinge or the blend door actuator is broken.
@@DeathScouter Thanks a lot for your reply. Indeed both hoses are hot. Unfortunately I'm afraid your guess is right which means a bigger job than just flushing the heat core. Thanks.
Hey there. So i have a 2002 jeep liberty sport. At first the blower wasnt working to full potential so i replaced the resistor. Now it works better however, i have to wait for heat. Once i get heat it lasts for 30 seconds i then close the vents wait reopen them and it works again. Any ideas on what the problem is?
ktandrews1995 The resistor board will only apply to the speed of the blower. Whether or not you get hot air is going to rely on a few other factors. I would check them in this order because these are the easiest and cheapest:1. Make sure your antifreeze is full. The heater core will be deprived of fluid if the fluid level is too low. You may notice you have heat at high speeds when the water pump is gushing, but at slow speeds or stops, heat goes away. This scenario is totally about fluid level or a clogged heater core.2. Monitor the temp of your coolant on your dashboard gauge. If your Jeep is running hot or takes a longer time to warm up than it used to, you may want to swap out your thermostat to make sure coolant circulates correctly.3. Turn your climate controls from hot to cold and listen to find out if your blend doors (inside your dashboard) are opening and closing. You can typically hear them "flap" from 1 position to another.4. It is VERY COMMON in Jeeps for the hinge that connects the blend doors (there are 2 doors, 1 over top of the other) to break. That means the actuator is moving between the hot and cold position, but the doors themselves don't move and you get hot/cold air depending on the position that the doors are in. This is a PAINFUL repair since the blend doors are part of the ventilation system, which is ONE piece of plastic duct work that requires the ENTIRE dashboard to be disassembled. (I need to do this, so maybe I'll have a video on this soon)

Did you have to leave the fresh water hose lying on the ground just running away? Waste of precious water drives me crazy!
