Overcrowded prisons trigger emergency measures in England

- Prisons in England are now so full that people newly charged by the police are having their court appearances delayed because there might not be a cell available if they're sent to jail awaiting trial.
Critics say the whole situation is further evidence of a criminal justice system on the verge of collapse.
The Ministry of Justice says it's tackling the situation with a scheme known as Operation Early Dawn - which appropriately began at 5.30 this morning.

Why not transfer foreign prisoners to prisons in their countries?
Because the vast majority are british criminals.
In addition it would require this thing called an international agreement with said countries. We all know how big the brits are on international cooperation, agreements and laws...

Private companies running our prisons aim for 8 - 10% profit margins.
I wander how much privertisation plays a part in this picture. I know private prisons are more overcrowded than public prisons.
Increased government spending can be drained by private profit extraction.
Private prisons cost more per placement than public prisons. A prison crisis due to reaching capacity is serious in a democracy that is governed by rule of law.

40 years ago the UK prison population was around 46000, it is now around 95000. This hasnt happened overnight, this is a problem that was decades in the making.

Prison is not about rehabilitation it's about private security firms making money. Prison is a business and people with mental health issues should not be in prison.

Scotland declared a housing emergency too. Maybe there are too many people on the island? There’s no excuse to be housing any foreign criminals.
When country is run by people detached from reality it will keep deteriorating no matter what is the name of the party.
And guess how that will effect the probation officers already firefighting their intense high caseload. It will make it even more unmanageable, more officer breakdowns, and more SFO's.

Last time I got out of prison was about 10yrs ago and it was over crowded then. I see nothing has changed

That's what we keep asking! Paying private business huge fees for services that aren't delivered...my local hospital has cut back on really basic necessities because of costs, drugs, equipment, slings, crutches and the little plastic catheters they put in the back of your hand in a&e to administer drugs &drips... guess how much the tiny plastic things cost the NHS?? £20!! Each! For tiny plastic made for pennies. That's where tax payers money goes. So, which member of the Tory party is a director of the company that got that deal then?
What really strikes me is the contrast in how, amidst all these controversies, the Tories are vigorously pursuing legal actions to prosecute and imprison environmental activists from groups like Just Stop Oil and Extinction Rebellion. It feels quite dystopian.

Where are the prisoner's going to be housed? We have a halfway house down the road and there's more unease amongst people living here, because the released walk around drinking all day, smoking weed etc. There's no help for them, so they'll reoffend.
And still we don't legalise weed. Imagine how many people are in prison because of it.

There is always the capital punishment option without the 20 year wait of course.
Most of these prisons are just 3 star hotels with a few extra guards so maybe just build actual prisons that punish those that commit crimes. Prisoners can still get hold of drugs and mobile phones and pretty much whatever they like so obviously there is alot wrong with the current system.
The system of law needs to change before anything else.
We got plenty of room in are privately run American prisons, for all of our mentally ill and criminal newcomers. Be warned. It's going down right now.

We need a system like the USA. They accept prison space is limited and justice has a financial limit.. The DA’s have to manage those limited resources. That’s why they offer plea bargains.
A court case might bring a 5 year sentence. But if you don’t go to court they will offer 3 years instead. That’s saves the cost of a trial and two years imprisonment.
The thing about the court and prison system is that someone everyday is being sent to prison and they can make more space but it doesn't matter because there is more of us as people then prison cell and its only getting worser specialy as wii ara getting more people from different countries on boats that doesn't help 😀

Prison isn't that bad at all i have Been ones before and i was surprised how easy it was you get giveing vape pens when you get to the front door of a prison and fresh clothes and you get a tv in your cell and 3 hot meals a day its just like being at home the only thing is that your locked up that all 😀
