Hi Ronny, professional wrench & truck mechanic here. Remember that UCAs also correct your camber (not just castor) for a lifted truck, even if you didn't want to fit larger tyres it is HIGHLY recommended that you fit them regardless.
Hi Cormac, I got a 2020 SR5 (the older model) and recently have ordered a ARB BP51 upgrade which comes with a 2-inch lift, I am also swaping the tyres to bigger tyres (31ish to 32ish), from your point of view, is it worth investing in the UCAs?

Another great vid Ronny. The one thing you didn't cover with the 33's was the change in gearing. Do you find it harder in low range to navigate tight trails now? Do you think you will need to change your diff ratios at some point since your speedo will be out?
Hey Ronny. I'd like to hear whether you're getting the total lift over 50mm engineered or not since I'm in WA too and not sure how to go about it. Thanks for the vid :)
New dmax doesn't need body mount chop or uca upgrades on 33s :), runs them sweet with just a 2" lift, tyre centres in well perfectly, but a diff drop is highly recommended.
Hi Ronnie. I have a 2015 Foton Tunland which pretty much runs Hilux/Prado chassis/suspension. I do mostly beach driving so I really don't need or want to much in the way of mods. I've put standard size AT's on as an upgrade from the standard HT's, roof bars for an awning and tube for fishing rods, fibreglass canopy and a couple of driving lights. I came with the towbar and nudge bar and that's about all I need. In the back I have a small Engel fridge, portable power pack and a box of various recovery gear. I have had the front suspension changed to a set of standard Hilux springs and shocks as the Foton fronts do sag over time. Pretty much a stock vehicle as it came and that's all I think you need for what I do. A couple of engine bay mods to that needed to be done to sort out some drivability issues I had but no chips and exhaust mods. You are correct in saying that you don't need much to go 4wding. Unless your going to do anything extreme. I'm 60 and been around 4wd's since I was 15 so pretty much been and done. Love the vids and the great down to earth info.
Once again best offroad channel on the internet 👌 thank you Ronny, I have a 2018 tacoma and this is probably what I will do soon, I fit 285/75 R16 falkens with no lift, no rub, and no cab chop. But I think I will do a 2.5 lift and possibly 315s in the future. Cheers 🇨🇦
Hey Ronny, You should make your way to Iceland sometime. We modify our trucks a lot more extensively. Not saying better or worse as that is terrain related. We modify our trucks for snow wheeling and crossing glaciers. We do minimal lift and cut into the body amongst other things to fit the larger tires. We run a Tacoma on 44" tires with about 6cm body lift. Used to run 38" tires with no body lift. Our lightest vehicles like the Jimny are running 33" to 35" tires. The mid size like the Hilux, Tacoma, Patrol and Land Cruisers are running 38" to 44" tires. Then there are some extreme mods with those vehicels running 46" tires. Then there are the Rams, the f350's on 46"to 54" tires. One is experimenting a 58" tires. The same minds and modification technique is being used on the South Pole. A little more work than I expected to fit the 33”. My Fj Cruiser will fit 33” with just a simple 2” lift but of course that’s a totally different vehicle.
Hi Ronny, enjoyed your video. I'm in the process of a 2 inch lift kit in my 2019 Toyota Hilux because of the extra front end weight. Winch/recovery points/ daul battery system, etc. I will be using Koni front and rear shocks and Lovells Coil Springs.
Hey Ronny, Does the On-track Fabrications body mount chop and compliance plate allow more lift? The WA limit is 50mm and this is the sum of lift and tyres. 50mm (2inches) of suspension lift plus another 28mm of increased ride height (over the standard Hilux tyre) from these awesome RAZR MT's makes a total of 78mm lift. Being a West Aussie I know this is a nanny state and the rules here suck, but isn't keeping this rig legal part of the whole process?
My Fortuner sits on ko2s, 275 65 18 ( 32.1'') Your Hilux 285 70 17 ( 32.7'' ) Mine rubbed the mud flap so I pushed my castor to the limit then had to use super pro camber adjustment bolts and bush to push more forward and no more kissing
Just touching on legalities on this now Ronny as you have increased the diameter of the tyres by 55.6mm and lifted it 40mm comes to a total of 67.8mm of lift which makes it illegal in the eyes of the W.A police and with the big focus on 4wds at the moment with yellow stickers I'm interested in what you're doing to make it legal again will you be getting it engineered?
I hoped that you build it on a tight budget like you tell us in the first videos. But you end up with a fully build 4x4 for a "lot" of money. Also more videos from trips with a stock Hilux (ecapt tires) would have been cool.
In West Australia (where Ronny is) the 2in lift and 33's would also need engineering approval. Regardless, I thought you could only go up 40mm in tyre size (from the largest offered stock on the vehicle)? That would make 265's the largest.
Hey Ronnie....Luxy is looking cool. Interested to hear your opinion on how much the bigger tyres affect the fuel economy and power/drivability (acceleration, holding speed on hills, and low range crawling due to increased gearing by the tyres).
Love your vids Ronnie. Mate I have the same ute (n80), same lift (2"+ with uca's) and exact same tyres (MT772 285/70R17). Do you have a mod plate, standard tyre 30.5" (776mm) 33" (834mm) exceeds the VSB14 vehicle standards design code. I only mention this from a legal and liability perspective. Insurance companies aren't in the business of paying out when they can.
Serious build, and some serious filming. How do the single axle trailer handle those corrugations compared to the car? Is it a big difference with or without it? Ground clearance makes a huge difference offroad. If I had to choose between bigger tires and the lift, though - I would go for the tires every time. Because it also makes a bigger footprint and it climbs obstacles better.
Thank you Ronny for another great video... what would be the max tyre size you could go to without having to modify the frame..? Many thanks again and am loving and so grateful for this series especially.! very best to you..g
Is there an alternative to put 285 in without making a cut in the chassis? Through offset, spacers combined to higher lift? Or something? Thanks Ronny! excellent video
Another great informative video Ronny! Just wondering, when all is done on the project, will you be posting a costs list, RRP etc (not what you paid)? We are slowly doing a similar build it would be useful for prioritising.
Awesome! I love this Hilux! One thing not mentioned. Perhaps it was not asked, perhaps there is no issue. How did the auto transmission take the increase in tyre size? Did have any effect on cruising in top gear? Like for instance shifting up and down from top gear like it can't decide which gear it want to be in? ("Hunting gears". Apparently this was an issue with bigger wheels on the Auto 3.0D4D Hilux) Or perhaps geared down earlier on an incline? Or perhaps pull-away felt slower?
Nice mods! I run a full size 3/4 ton Silverado for my overlanding rig & am debating modifying the suspension & tires from stock. I also use it around my farm, so not sure if it's worth doing or not🤔
So do you have ti have the tyres on before you go to On Track fab or do they do the chop and then put them on for you. Also does the plate that gets put on account for the lift as well?
Great video Ronny! At around 11:10 I see you mention how the UCAs correct caster, but isn't the camber correction the main reason to have them in a IFS? I normally hear more about the need for caster correction when lifting solid axle systems, because if the radius arms remain the same they will have this effect of "pulling" the wheels back a little with a lift. Also, how far can you go on the tyres/suspension upgrade without having to do the body chops? Could it work with your previous setup, 31.5 inch tyres w/ OME BP-51?
With the 2inch suspension lift and the 33inch tyres would that not make it illegal in western Australia? Or did you get it engineered? Genuinely curious as I have a 2019 sr5
Enjoyed your Vid. Are you ever concerned Toyota might decline a warranty claim with the lift? It’s always something in the back of my mind and keen to see what other people think
Have a 2010 Grand Vitara 3.2l V6 (Prestige). Looking to have a go at some off road campsites (nothing too crazy). I’m wondering whether putting a bull bar, breathers and a 2 inch raise kit on this type of vehicle is just wasting money?
I dunno. Ive never been worried about road noise. For me it is a case of you want nice muddies suck it up and forget about noise. But, saying that, for me the noise is a part of the experience. I like my whistlin turbo and rubles. Its a big car and it looks big it shod sou d big too. Just my take on it.
Hi Ronny, after installing the BP51 lift kit, can you feel some vibrations in your hilux? Especially at high speed from the steering wheel. And what is your compression and rebound setup on your bp51. I had mine installed recently.
Ronny, would like to get your thoughts on the BP51's vs the Dobinsons on your 79? What made you go with the OME on the Hilux? Im currently looking at doing a GVM upgrade (preregistration) and am undecided between the two.
Same with my 4Runner. Meanwhile, Broncos are going to come with 35s STOCK. :( You may be able to fit a 255/80/17, which is like a 33×10.0. With it being fairly skinny, it may not require the BMC. I know that works on the 4Runner.
The Hilux is looking mint Ronny, but you can't just call your 3 inch lift a 2 inch lift. Maybe the front will settle 10mm but it's not going to come down 25mm because there is no more weight to add to the front.
Awesome bakkie you have there! What did you do in terms of recalibrating the speedo/odometer after adding larger diameter tyres? Changing to larger wheels leads to driving faster than your speedo says you're driving. You'll find that out soon enough once the first traffic cop slap you with speeding fine.
You can also get (I'm not sure if their available for a Hilux (but chances are they are (they are defiantly available for an old Patrol))) after market gears for the speedo cable. They are available in a various number of teeth sizes. So its actually not that hard to recalibrate a speedo/odometer
Need an easier and more cost effective way to have the perfect Ronnymobile. Toyota should partner with you to bring out a fully Ronny approved ultimate Ute and wagon. There would only be those on Australian roads if this was the case

Yea how much brother!!!, I'm about to purchase a new suspension lift kit and wanted to know the price.
Many thanks mate ! I know what to do now :)
I’m so confused weather 33s and 2 inch lift are illegal in WA, apparently it’s supposed to be 2inches, lift and tires all up
It is illegal 50mm total Ronny has gone over this and yet to answer if he will get it engineered
Apparently this was an issue with bigger wheels on the Auto 3.0D4D Hilux)
Or perhaps geared down earlier on an incline? Or perhaps pull-away felt slower?
Nice mods! I run a full size 3/4 ton Silverado for my overlanding rig & am debating modifying the suspension & tires from stock. I also use it around my farm, so not sure if it's worth doing or not🤔
So do you have ti have the tyres on before you go to On Track fab or do they do the chop and then put them on for you. Also does the plate that gets put on account for the lift as well?
Your friend that makes the body armor plates, does he make them for the Ram and does he ship to the US
Thanks for the show. Whats the effect of MTs on wet high ways?
Your Front Tag is awesome. In what Reference to do address for that name? Mythical,Gaming... etc?
Ironman Foamcell Pro will surprise you 😍
Have a 2010 Grand Vitara 3.2l V6 (Prestige). Looking to have a go at some off road campsites (nothing too crazy). I’m wondering whether putting a bull bar, breathers and a 2 inch raise kit on this type of vehicle is just wasting money?
Tow ball weight should be minimum 10% of the weight of the trailer to avoid death wobbles (might be different with the small trailer)
I dunno. Ive never been worried about road noise. For me it is a case of you want nice muddies suck it up and forget about noise. But, saying that, for me the noise is a part of the experience. I like my whistlin turbo and rubles. Its a big car and it looks big it shod sou d big too. Just my take on it.
Great video Ronny, loved it. Sure wish it was a bit easier to fit the 33's. Have you done any work to the ECU yet?
Hi Ronny, after installing the BP51 lift kit, can you feel some vibrations in your hilux? Especially at high speed from the steering wheel.
And what is your compression and rebound setup on your bp51. I had mine installed recently.
Left it in the mid setting either 5-6 and I didn’t have a vibration.
Could be tyre balance especially if you have MTs
Thanks for your reply Ronny😄
Will bring the car for wheel balancing see if it will fix the issue. Any recommended tyre shop in Perth?
Hey Ronny, how’s the angle of your cv’s after the lift? Im Running the same setup as yours. Would you consider diff drop kit?
G'Day Ronny,, maybe I missed it in an earlier EP, but what's all the dots over the panels on the bodywork ???....Sydney Dave
Ronny, would like to get your thoughts on the BP51's vs the Dobinsons on your 79? What made you go with the OME on the Hilux?
Im currently looking at doing a GVM upgrade (preregistration) and am undecided between the two.
Hmm good tip, I wish I slept on every decision 😂
Hi you did not talk about the STUD LIKE THINGS ON THE BODY OF THE CAR WHAT ARE THEY N WHY DID YOU INSTAL THEM
So the hilux is just like the tacoma with the body mount chop. Its the body mount chop that keeps me from wanting to get 33s on my tacoma
Same with my 4Runner. Meanwhile, Broncos are going to come with 35s STOCK. :( You may be able to fit a 255/80/17, which is like a 33×10.0. With it being fairly skinny, it may not require the BMC. I know that works on the 4Runner.
Digging this series Ronny
2023 Hilux Rogue is 140mm wider track. Any idea if the body mount chop is required to fit 32.6” tyres?
The Hilux is looking mint Ronny, but you can't just call your 3 inch lift a 2 inch lift. Maybe the front will settle 10mm but it's not going to come down 25mm because there is no more weight to add to the front.
It’s because I have the bullbar on the front and it was sagging so by the time the lift went in it corrected the sag and gave lift
Ah so 75mm up from the sagged height not from standard. I get it. Yeah my GU came up 100mm from the sagged height.
here we go!!
It’s not out by too much and I’m used to that from the cruiser. I use my gps to calculate speed
You can also get (I'm not sure if their available for a Hilux (but chances are they are (they are defiantly available for an old Patrol))) after market gears for the speedo cable. They are available in a various number of teeth sizes. So its actually not that hard to recalibrate a speedo/odometer
So with 32s {265/70x17} you won't need any chassis modifications correct?
Yes bud, about to get mine done. Seems like a lot of fuss for the 285s on the Hilux, I had no idea. Putting the 265s on and will see how we go.
Need an easier and more cost effective way to have the perfect Ronnymobile. Toyota should partner with you to bring out a fully Ronny approved ultimate Ute and wagon. There would only be those on Australian roads if this was the case
Very informative mate, thanks! Great 👍🏼 stuff!
