Thank you for this. Also, makes a point for the so called professional dog outing people who call themselves trainers yet take groups of 4 or 5 dogs out into public, no leashes, no e - collars and let them run up to people having trained dogs and service dogs on leash. They get angry when you tell them to keep their dogs on leash or under trained obedience control. People pay them to take their dogs out with no idea the danger they create.

This helps me feel so much better about not wanting to have big conversations with people, so now I can say “Yeah, No……my dogs in training”🤓 It would be a win for both of us!

I’ve watched for years, utilized a lot your free advice for mg new dog before and after getting her. Got her at 3 months and she’s turning 5 years old next week. You were saying the same thing back then. Found out that she prefers not to be approached by strangers. Utilized this exact approach from day one, and continue to bring her “pack” whenever she goes to a restaurant or brewery with me. She understands I don’t let people pet her, and that she is to relax and lay on her “place” which happens to be a towel. Will utilize this approach, and many of your others, for the rest of my life.

You are completely correct in that so much published info about early socialisation with puppies is about creating positive interactions with other dogs and people, rather than about teaching social ignorance and focus on the handler as the priority.
It was funny watching Kevin in the background being typically Ovcharka like. He's a top dog!

This was a great reminder of the best way to get your dog/puppy to focus on you versus focusing on the environment! Thank you

great video. ive always explained socialization as not just "puppy play time" but more "can i rely on my dog in the presence of other dogs".

I would word it as "my dog know to trust and focus on me, knowing that nothing would being harm or more satisfied would happen"

You’re so on point with this. This is what I do with my Mal. Now, she is crazy focused on me. Reminds me of leerburg speaking on who should pet your puppy and Michael Ellis on socializing pups.

Absolutely love this video. Socialization is something I failed miserably at due to ignorance which I'm still trying to address. My dog has made improvements over time but at this point he's 2 years old and I am still failing him. I appreciate the education about what socialization really is, turns out I've made a lot of mistakes. Luckily I don't think that I can't repair that, just going to take more work and I'm eager to put that work in. Thanks Haz!

Truely the more you do the harder it is. Get a towel and make him be on his place and perform corrective action if he gets confused as to where he must be. Then reward him and repeat. Good luck, don’t over think what yes and no mean.

I sure wish I'd seen this 2 years ago when I adopted my working line female 2 yr old. She's leash reactive and has anxiety. She has calmed down a lot and choosing to ignore dogs more and more. I really think dog trainers should call themselves dog OWNER trainers. It is imperative, I believe, that a potential dog owner understands they need the correct education in HOW to train their dog in order to have a happy, well balanced and obedient dog. I have my dog's back. I think she knows it -- finally. ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤

Just bought your book! We just adopted an anxious dog who submissively urinates and is stranger aggressive. I also have a Czech bloodline GSD that I raised as a puppy that I have no issues with and would like to potently train for sport and would join a club if I had more money. Thanks for the book! And at a great price!

I didn't know this 7 year ago I let my gsd meet people and all dogs when he was a pup then eventually I stopped him from meeting things and he became more and more reactive then I got a new very high drive gsd lucky lockdown happened so didn't meet people dogs and now I'm more fun than any of them and he's not reactive so that was the light bulb moment for me 😊

I'm a trainer, but I'm young and don't have a huge property like you do. I never want to train under anyone else because I can see the flaws in everyone's methods. But I've been subscribed for a while and I don't see anything wrong with yours. If I lived near you I would had loved to try and work for your program. How do you choose your trainers?

Interesting. I rescued a 2 year old dog that's confident, but anti social.
She can and will interact with other dogs and be around other people just fine. But she doesn't like to be touched or called by strangers, nor will she accept food (treats) from strangers/vet. Instead she focuses on me more on those situations.
I've never experienced a dog's "loyalty" (or disdain) with this type of intensity before.
She has come a looooong way since we got her, but I don't see her changing too much more.
I literally have to tell people to not touch her and if I don't, she will tell them herself.
She's not a biter, but she's an asshole for sure.

Is it ok for a 1.5-2 year old dog to play with squeaky balls??? Will that ruin their ball drive for non-squeaky balls?
