Lol. why people like you judge nature so naively: Red-billed oxpecker preferred food is blood, and while they may take ticks bloated with blood, they also feed on it directly, pecking at the mammal's wounds to keep them open.

Well, sometimes this goes so far that the birds peck the skin to drink the blood. And the symbiosis is so strongly implemented that the host animal doesn't do anything about it. Then the symbiosis to get rid of parasites turns into a parasitic relationship itself.

I love how despite their thick skin and what you would think is hard leather, every bird movements triggers a reflexe in the Rhino's leg, they do have sensitive skin after all !
The bird is picking a wound at the foot to make it bleed - the blood is food to the bird. You can see this rhino as several bleeding areas on the face - guessing birds are keeping it bleeding for a food source.
Bird "you called for my service" Rhino "yes, the usual please" Bird "ok let me take a peek" (Checking) Bird "ok not too serious...go ahead?" Rhino "yup" Bird go in again
But actually The rhino eats the berds... its not ear, its an addictive trap that produces ear wax which smells good to berds. If it stayed any longer the rhinos long ass tongue would shoot out and catch the berd.
Interesting. If you read up on this bird, it doesn't actually help it's host in any way. Most of it's time is spent opening up existing wounds or creating new ones, and feeding on the hosts blood and tissue.
It actually does help get rid of ticks and other flesh eating parasites and insects but at the same time it also opens new wounds and draws blood. Its argued that they may also be parasites themselves
These birds are almost like parasites themselves, they feast on blood, and will open or keep a wound open to get it. They eat ticks that have already drank the blood. Also, having that many ticks on that part of the body must suck 0:31
for us it sucks but they dont even notice it if they noticed it, they would place the side where the ticks are to the birds so they eat them cause those birds love ticks
I could actually feel the pleasure and relief of the rhino when the bird was picking down in it's ear!🤗 It must have felt like one of those good ole pinky or index finger digs that we all do!😂
@thedonutcreed Which is worse? Someone typing how they usually would and making a joke or someone being an intolerant arsehole? Also, what are the high IQ emojis?
This relationship is beneficial to both parties: the rhinos get relief from parasites, and the oxpeckers get a source of food. However, it's worth noting that while oxpeckers primarily feed on parasites, they may also peck at scabs or open wounds, potentially hindering the healing process for the rhino. Nonetheless, on balance, this relationship is generally considered mutually beneficial in the context of the natural ecosystem. (GPT)
you might want to check out how these birds comb through the coats of the deer family. very thorough and methodical. although I have learnt that sometimes these birds on purpose pinch the animals skins to attract the insects to later on feast on.
