So I am sitting with my buddy Paul Denk, and he is telling me all sorts of cool stories about this boat. Not a boat like this boat, but this exact boat (in the video). Paul owned this boat when it was called Fide. He bought it in the Isle of Wight around 1979 to ‘80. He then salied to the Jersey Islands, just off the coast of France. From there he sailed up the coast of France to the Gironde River and stayed for nearly a year. He worked on bots to make Money. He says there was gnarly sailing around there. “Difficult sailing”From there he traveled across the Bay of Biscay to Balboa, Spain. Stayed a little while and again worked on boats. He didn’t make much money but a person could eat for a couple of bucks a day. He then went up the coast to Portugal. He stayed there for a year as well. In Portugal he had a little money and worked on boats in the Port of Beliem. He then took a left turn at the tip of Europe, and stayed in the Algarve for about six months. Did little chartering with the boat sunset cruises. He had a beautiful Portuguese girlfriend. He knew he wasn’t going to be there long so he kept his distance.
Well small world indeed. As an impressionable teen, Paul D took me under his wing, I did my first Round -the -island -Race in Fide as was.. thought I recognised the boat in the early parts of the video..😊
Beautiful quick boat , evening day sails out of Yarmouth , after the RTI finish we didn’t bother to go into Cowes, we had a beautiful sail right back into Yarmouth ( Stuart Turner 4hp no-go petrol engine),, it was my 21 birthday so just happened to have a bottle of fizz , popped the cork as we sailed in, AND we made it to the pub before 11pm! Happy days . Or as Paul Denks used to say ‘’Salty Dog, you !”

This is awesome, some great design cues. I really enjoyed watching Kevin single handing his dinghy. Did disagree on one point, a boat and the enjoyment she brings is worth every penny we put into them.

I sailed on a couple of W Solents when I was a lad, up in Abersoch, N Wales. Gybing that long boom in a blow was an exercise in timing to get the runners in.

Oh my mate. I don’t sail personally, but what a lovely short film. I live vigorously through you. I love the sea, I can’t stand to be away from water, the sea & rivers etc but mainly the sea, an 18 month stint a few hundred Kilometres north east of Alice Springs in the mid eighties mostly in dry & unbearable heat made living near water almost an obsession for me for the rest of my life. Brought up near Portsmouth I just loved the the thought of going to sea & joining the RN like my dad ( Artificer, RN 1933 to 1965 )
Why didn’t I follow my dream... ? Travel sickness & in particular sea sickness of the most awful & prolonged kind, something to do with my sense of balance & inner ear etc. My dear old dad never got sea sick, ever & he was in mine sweepers in the North Sea for nearly 10 years after the war. But I do love scouring TH-cam for gems like this. Brilliant stuff.

My father B.N.Brickell owned a West Solent “Nabla” in the early or mid seventies. She was moored at Castle Cove in Portland Harbour. I was in my late teens and had some wonderful channel cruising with him. Sadly she broke her mooring and went onto the harbour wall. A sad end for a wonderful boat..

There was one of these kept (for many years) at Mylor Yacht Harbour in Cornwall. Her name was West Wings (at least I think I have got this right). Very beautiful boats.

I sure would like to sail it. Kinda like a cat boat. It just stays quarter wakeing but the toe rails stay mostly dry.Justazipping around the bay.And no noise.15-20kt wind?,moderate inland chop? Sounds fun to me.Get some coffee .

Absolutely beautiful and looks fast as hell! However I do see that these boats are very unpractical as well as hard to manoeuvre in marinas with that huge boom and without a motor. Still looks classy!
Tiller notches have been used on Åfjordsboats bigger than ca. 27ft since at least the 1700s.
Its northern cousin does not have it, in fact it has a push-pull tiller in all sizes, even 45 footers, owing to the need for a quicker response to unstable winds between the northern mountains.
This is the sort of solution that is invented in parallell places through time, forgotten and invented again.

" A gentleman's racing yacht." I would be curious to see what a ruffians or hoi polloi racing yacht was like. They would probably not tolerate that sort in the Royal Yacht Squadron.
