Just few things to correct, the S5 has USB C power delivery and the S5 II has external raw recording but you need to buy it separately to unlock it.
Great review, it has some great insights. I preordered the S5IIx, because I think it is kot worth it paying the extra for the external recording, while you can pay the same price for the 5IIx, and it gives you even more.

Hi Shane, first I'd like to say how great your channel is and how you have such postivity* which is a real asset. Your mix of explaining and talking indoors mixed with seeing examples from outdoors or your working with cameras outside is good and pedagogical. Please keep up the good work (I've been a subscriber at least 18+ months).
To the cameras. I have mft lumix cameras & lenses so a switch to small format like S5 just isn't there because of among other reasons €$¥. I think I will wait and see when a G9 or G90 with phase detect and unlimited recording arrives and, until then, be happy with what I have. If I have to wait a long time for the mft equivalent then the S5ii with lenses would be pulling me in!
*even when you had the flippy screen incident.

Thanks for the kind words and for helping me learn a new word "pedagogical" I haven't looked up a word in a long time so you taught me something new and cool! The MFT system is excellent. This studio video was shot on the GH5S because the results are still excellent. I am hoping the G9 is the first of the new Phase Hybrid MFT cameras to come out followed by a G95 or GH5III (or something similar). I can say, the lenses for the L mount are excellent. They have no focus breathing and give excellent results.
I am hoping we hear something about a new AF system in MFT. I think it'll be a game changer for the system.

Hey Geeky Nerdy Techy - your channel is one of my favorites for S5 content. (I am subscribed)
Last year I got the Lumix S5 I but have started learning how to operate it this January.
There is still so much to lean and I am enjoying the camera.
I bought it knowing the AF limitations. And thanks to your videos in part I was reassured that the AF is OK and not great. It is in no way trash just not usable for certain use cases.
If there is a good deal on Black Friday 2023 I will probably get the S5 II X for the ProRes and the Auto Focus. I will not be selling my S5 Mark I.
If there are no good deals for Black Friday 2023 I am in no rush. And I am interested for the new S1 II and S1H II
If the S1 II has a flip out screen, 4K60 in Full Frame (even in 8 bit) and an improved sensor for up to 3000 USD Maybe I will get an S1 II
The only reason I can think of that I NEED (not want) good AF is that as I am a social dancer and I want videos of me dancing I can hand someone the camera with AFC and the person just has to NOT drop it lol

I ordered the s5II for the af. Mostly do photography and don't have problem with decent lighting., But with faster lenses like the 50-1.8 mounted in indoor situations or other lower light situations the camera tends to hunt pretty much. Shooting alot in groups of people, and let some other people shoot with my camera also if they like to. If people don't know how to handle the af , most of the shots ain't good.

I would love to short drum-sequences with the S5 or the S5II placed on a stand. That is the main application I need. Is the old autofocus of the S5 for that application a problem? I've seen many videos mentioning the by far better autofocus of the SX5II but the SX5II is definetly more expensive. Could moving arms and sticks distract the auto focus of the S5? It would be marvelous to get a response. Thanks a lot.

I know it won't happen for a year or so, if it happens at all, but I hope so badly that Panasonic comes out with a compact S series camera body that has a design language similar to some of their compact G series cameras. Imagine a full frame GX85/9. I'd willingly take slightly worse IBIS, video recording limitations, etc. Coupled with the Sigma I series primes, that's a dream package for me.

You don't think the S5 and S5ii can be tweaked to match in a multicam shoot? Any reason why? Before selling off my G85 to get a second S5, I was doing multicam with the G85, GH5 and the S5 without any problems other than the image quality between the G85 and the S5 was so huge. But color was very easy to match with a gray card.

    • @GeekyNerdyTechy
      @GeekyNerdyTechy  ปีที่แล้ว +1

The main reason is it’s expensive to swap. The 4 camera multicamera setup is paid for and it works great being I use manual focus. Just switching one for no reason makes no sense in that scenario. I’ll end up with two S5II cameras but mostly for either the studio I’m in or the handheld run and gun stuff

Currently there are used S5's (original) for around 950 euro and they are also in great condition. My question is, which is now obvious, is the S5 mark II worth it at twice the price as the S5 (original)? Any feedback would be greatly welcomed.

Joke: This would be a better review if you replaced the word “need” with the word “want.” What I “need” is irrelevant. I need air, food and shelter. I don’t even need a camera, but I want an S5 II. 😊👍

I find it very strange watching you not play guitar!

Thanks for another down-to-earth review. Will S5 MkII replace GH5/GH6 as your travel camera choice (due to improved IBIS)? Also, how does Mkii compares with Mki for ISO / Noise ?

Thanks for the kind words, Mehmet. The S5II is a monster of a camera. Funnily enough we shot an episode of a show I do on another channel with the S5II and GH6 today and both cameras are great. I found the GH6 excelled with the 4K100/120p and the quality is superb. The S5II is a great all-rounder for regular frame rates where AF is importent. The GH6 image quality was so close to my eye that most people won't be able to see a difference (including me). :)
