The way that straight adult men talked about Justin Bieber when he was like 15-- like being excited at the thought of him being unalived or constantly calling him gay-- was NOT okay.
His parents and the adults in his life really failed him for real. It’s actually so so so sick that he was allowed to start a whole ass CAREER as a child it’s so weird. He’s been through so much and I hope the best for him. I totally agree about the Diddy stuff, it’s not our place to speculate on that. We can talk about the horrors that we KNOW instead of speculating. Great video as always Ashley!! I can’t imagine how hard this video was to make given the subject matter. ❤
I was just transported back to high school where my not like other girls syndrome was at its all time highest, while secretly listening to “Baby” on my iPod nano.
That’s weird on its own, but it’s even weirder when you remember how entangled he was and still is with the KarJenners. There’s allegations he may have cheated on Selena with either Kendall or Kylie Jenner, or both of them. He later briefly dated Sofia Richie, who went on to date Scott Disick. And then, of course, he married Hailey, who’s also friends with Kylie, hence the recent-ish beef between them and Selena.
Ashley I am so glad we’re the same age bc whenever you post about these pop culture moments I always remember exactly where I was when they happened. The entire Bizzle era was the primary topic of discussion at my art class table that year
0:36 it is creepy and surprising how many older women in entertainment had such a crush on Bieber while he was still a child. It’s a lil too clear from that laugh. Often thought children weren’t safe from men, but it’s just all adults, just all of us poor kids
I recall justin bieber throwing up on stage (twice i think?) and then just carrying on with the performance. It really breaks my heart he was put in a position where he had to perform even when he was unwell
Excellent work Ashley! I never followed JB too closely or had any strong feelings on him one way or the other, but watching these clips of how composed and polite he was, even to downright rude and invasive interviewers, even at such a young age, I gained a new respect for him.
I used to be one of the "not like other girls" during the rise of JB saying "i dont like him. Hes totally gay" 💀 man, I hate my old self, my gosh. He was a pre-pubecent, talented kid. I legit feel so bad for all the crap hes been through
I didn’t like him as a kid but as an adult I feel bad for him. Like the poor kid had to deal with so much vitriol from adults or weird sexual behavior like it’s gross. It’s highkey traumatic like wtf
the secondhand pain when adults and children my age would air out all their homophobic grievances about this kid around me. he faced so much homophobia for a straight man we should let him say 1(one) homophobic slur, as a treat
I finished this right when my wife came home and was telling her about it, and then I found out she was a Belieber 😂 and we spent the evening watching the movies and the roast and me just poking fun at her as more lore unfolded 😝 it was great thanks for that.
I do not like Justin Bieber or many of the people you cover on the channel but your storytelling capabilities are so well crafted and intriguing that I would watch you talk about cucumbers
I'm usually a strong advocate for 'eat the rich' and 'to hell with all celebrities' but when it comes to Justin Bieber I genuinely feel sorry for him. Yes he's rich but the shit he went through is just... my God. I don't even know how he's alive. NO ONE protected him. He was just out there being torn apart, praised, sexualized, worshiped, exploited, bullied and so much more by everyone. At one point I didn't like him because it was popular to not like him and I was a kid but when I actually listened to his stuff I realized how amazingly talented he was. He got where he was by sheer talent (and a bit of luck but yk) and seeing people discredit his capabilities pissed me off once I realized his level of musicality and stage presence. It's just so, so, so, so, SO sad that no one stood up for him, protected him, put his well-being first or any of that. Yes he's not a perfect person- no one is- but he didn't deserve how he grew up. I don't know if he'll ever be healthy after the baffling amounts of attention and scrutiny he's endured but I really hope he finds his way and can be a good husband and father.
i was such a contrarian little shit as a kid that i actively hated on justin beiber. my family thought this was hysterical, so for several years at least one birthday/christmas present would be wrapped in justin beiber wrapping paper
So excited to watch!! I remember first hearing about Justin Bieber in 7th grade science class while we were watching a Livestream of the gulf oil spill. Truly a moment that changed my brain chemistry forever and he and that event can't be separated in my mind
this reminds me (fittingly) of how i was doing a book report on Anne Frank’s book in high school whenever the Death of a Bachelor album came out and I listened to it exclusively while I worked in class. I can’t listen to any of those songs without thinking about Anne Frank. silly brains
does anyone else find some of the ways people talk about justin and diddy to be really creepy in a fetishy way? the way people come up with wild speculation about justin being victimized by diddy gives me the same vibes as those horrible fanfics/books about gay men suffering through terrible things for 300 pages, especially considering the weird obsession people had for years about justin not being traditionally masculine
its criminal how underrated justins raw talent is. look how young he was shredding that guitar and staying completely on beat on the drums. not to mention obviously his amazing voice and perfect pitch
I found this channel recently and watched almost every video so I started watching the second channel 😭😭 the effort that you make for these videos FOR FREE are so good, and the humor is super relatable. THANKSSSS

I've been listening to Justin Bieber again this year after finding my old CDs. I forgot how fun his music is! Bieber Fever is still alive and well for me. I remember that True Jackson Vp episode changed my life as a pre teen.
As a fellow Belieber, I absolutely love the way you approached this video and gave a good deep dive on his life. I am not a subscriber so when this video came up, I was afraid it was going to be a video bashing him for his past, but I highly appreciate and applaud this video in all it's entirety. Justin was on such a rollercoaster growing up and I respect that he lives a pretty quiet life now due to all the trauma and pain he has been through. I hope he eventually makes music again and gives us more bops to jam out to, but if not, I am happy he's alive and well. That's all that matters to me 😉💗
omg i was so not-like-other-girls about justin as a kid and i feel so bad. i remember writing 5 star reviews of selena gomez’ music that was like “justin will NEVER date you selena haters” help… the one thing that still holds up is a video edit of squidward hearing noises inside the cardboard box but instead it was justin bieber music and when he opened it a png of the official justin doll was inside. very ytp coded
I definitely grew up as a not-like-other-girls girl, so I really appreciate the insight you bring in these celebrity deep dives. It was really easy when I was younger to just point and laugh at all the really popular celebrities, but it's really good to be reminded that they are also people, the amount of stuff other people pile on them? It's no wonder they kinda lose it sometimes and react the way they do. Not that I'm saying they're all perfect either, but we all deserve some grace sometimes. Also as someone who wasn't in these fandoms spheres, it's really interesting to get a window into what that was like.
Without Bieber fever there is no appetite for 1D, it’s truly wild - not my thought exercise, I believe Evolution of a Snake pod nailed it in their billboard 25 popstars rundown. I kinda agree Biebs could have been higher on that list, not to side with Hailey 😂
Hearing that Justin Timberlake wanted to sign Bieber made me laugh because Bieber seemed to have gotten the worldwide obsession success that Timberlake wanted/lost after NSYNC was over. He really had the career that so many male popstars are still grinding for.
@ it’s so true and what’s cool about this retrospect (thank u Ashley!) is remembering Bieber’s talent straight out the gate. I know JT was a talented young star too, but he developed over years of performing - Biebs was like “hi, I’m a child and I’ll be bodying Aretha’s Respect near perfectly, take it or leave it” - it’s undeniable!!
shout out to that news channel that used the pun “Justin Credible”. this is my new favorite pop star pun. this is a fascinating video for me, bc when he got popular i was DEEP in my not-like-other-girls baby lesbian phase and despised anything that was being pushed to girls my age. i remember covering my ears when Baby played at school events like an 8 y/o edgelord. as an adult i feel like everyone was just. very weird about him all the time.
Its bc you cant see their faces and it seems supee fake, like why would they need to go to skid row for drugs as celebrities?? They would have a friend or someone deliver it for them at least
I've never completely gotten over my strong negative reaction to Bieber as a 6/7 year old. I did not get him for a long time and I still don't like him artistically or personally that much. That being said, the bullshit grown ups threw at him as a kid was indefensible and it's not mine or anyone's place to shame his fans for enjoying the music he makes even if I can't get to it. It's hard to blame former child stars too much for their bad actions when they were never treated well by the world.
I remember being really confused by the hate towards him. I knew I, as a "boy" (I'm non binary now), was supposed to hate him, but I didn't get why I remember being at a pool with a friend when Baby came on the radio and him being like "QUICK DIP YOUR HEAD UNDERWATER OR YOU'RE GAY!!!"
I only started hating Bieber when he started messing around in Brazil. I was not gonna let a gringo mess around here unscathed (that only lasted like a week tho)
Also as someone who lived right next to the Anne Frank Huis, I'm glad I didn't hear about it back in the day. I wasn't a fan of the fault in our stars for the same reason. Then years later I tried looking for a bench they sat on in the movie but just walked around in the summer heat for no reason because IT HAD BEEN STOLEN MULTIPLE TIMES
ugh and do you remember how this nonsense was happening at the same time as the weird jokes about lady gaga? the late 2000s and early 2010s were just....
It turns out the most Canadian response to Bieber talking about his 'small town journey' is to express outrage at someone from a city in Southern Ontario acting like they were from The Pas.
i’m so excited for this video cause i recently got over my internal misogyny when it comes to liking justin bieber, i’m 18 btw but when i was in elementary school all the girls liked him and i was like “im not like other girls” anyways im a lesbian but now i can fully appreciate justin biebers music (i didn’t take my adhd meds sorry)
I. Love. These. Videos. You do such a fantastic job being thorough and not holding unnecessary/uncalled for judgements against the subjects. I forgot about so much of these things and I'd still somehow been harboring unnecessary dislike for Justin. You're right, he's got bops. You're right, he was horribly mistreated as a child by adults. You're so right that his romantic relationships have been no different than someone else at his age. I'm reevaluating how I look at Justin because of this video, and I appreciate you taking me on this journey. I'm putting Beauty and a Beat back on my playlists!
RETURN OF GOOSE IN THE WIG my day is made, thank you. I really appreciated this video, especially your points at the end about empathazing with his situation and not speculating further, etc.
I was personally a directioner so I fell for the rivalry between the two fandoms and didn’t really care for him or his music so I’m excited to learn about it all
this video was so well done! i feel like recently a lot of people want him to be washed or irrelevant, but justin has a level of stardom that can’t be replicated and that a lot of his peers simply don’t have. in my opinion, he really is our last true pop star
when he was in his hillsong phase, he lived down the street from me with the pastor. i would drive by his house every day to go to work, and every day when i came home my dad would asl, "how's the biebs?"
Love the deep dives, Ashley, you have no idea! Thanks for being thorough in getting into the tea but still remembering to extend compassion to your subjects. I didn’t get into his early music because I, like many, was going through my contrarian phase. I was also too young to consume the media coverage of him (like, what middle schooler is watching Wendy Williams lol) but damn it was as inappropriate as the industry has ever treated any of the child stars in hindsight. Your video elicited in me a lot tender feelings for young Justin and his family; the scrutiny and harassment that he experienced was and still is unfair. I think we’ve become more aware of these things as a culture, but unfortunately that’s not yet enough to prevent other kids from going through it.
that picture of Justin meeting PM Stephen Harper (4:00) so funny/iconic because yeah "swaggy train conductor" lmao but also he didn't wear that to like the parliament. Harper came to the arena before his concert to give him an award (iirc Harper's son was also seeing the concert?) and his team just brought like half a dozen giant flags with him. Truly a PM chronically incapable of looking casual in literally any situation
my mom was friends with patty and ive met her a few times, she's really nice. they haven't really talked in about ten years though since patty moved away.
Indeed. A very important correction right there. Justin would be asking you to play the understated 'Animal Crossing: Wild World', and not the well-loved 'Animal Crossing: New Leaf'.
Ugh the funny or die skits. I cannot!! 😂 - I will never get over Justin’s raw talent. His untrained voice was angelic, and it’s only improved. I’m glad he got the wife and baby he wanted, and I hope he is able to heal and be okay after all the BS and trauma the industry has put him through.

SAME, except my guilty pleasures were Boyfriend and As Long As You Love Me
My mom even downloaded the music video to my nano 😂😂 to this day baby randomly gets stuck in my head
I feel like we glazed over the fact that he briefly dated Kourtney Kardashian who is almost TWICE HIS AGE?
33:13 a paparazzi filming someone asking another “what are you doing” for them recording is hilarious
I used to be one of the "not like other girls" during the rise of JB saying "i dont like him. Hes totally gay" 💀 man, I hate my old self, my gosh.
He was a pre-pubecent, talented kid. I legit feel so bad for all the crap hes been through
i like that laugh "👹hehehe"
that clip always gets me Justin was a menace. I hope he’s okay bc his journey with fame was/is super turbulent.
This autoplayed the second it was uploaded. The algorithm truly understands me.
I didn’t like him as a kid but as an adult I feel bad for him. Like the poor kid had to deal with so much vitriol from adults or weird sexual behavior like it’s gross. It’s highkey traumatic like wtf
Oh I am SAT.
he was a BABY. no one should get that much hate as a kid, jfc. real classic example of how even guys will catch strays from misogyny.
never have I cared about this man but will I watch an hour long ashley norton video about it? absolutely!
the secondhand pain when adults and children my age would air out all their homophobic grievances about this kid around me. he faced so much homophobia for a straight man we should let him say 1(one) homophobic slur, as a treat
girl I cackled. As as a treat is right
I finished this right when my wife came home and was telling her about it, and then I found out she was a Belieber 😂 and we spent the evening watching the movies and the roast and me just poking fun at her as more lore unfolded 😝 it was great thanks for that.
“Poose” “Now why would you think that” took me out
Sorry Justin’s 2nd racism statement was great but the idea that somebody might learn about racism from Justin’s instagram story is sending me
I do not like Justin Bieber or many of the people you cover on the channel but your storytelling capabilities are so well crafted and intriguing that I would watch you talk about cucumbers
i care much more about cucumbers than i care about the bachelor verse and yet i have watched and rewatched all her bachelor videos
I feel bad for most child stars except Willow Smith
@@jessicahutchinson9347why except willow?
more deep dives please Ashley 😭 you're only one of three people i like to listen to talk
'justin bieber had chaotic career' lives in my heart forever
She will be missed 😔
it still baffles me that he made it out of stratford ontario like if you’re from around there you know how weird it is
The “guess what? I don’t recall” made me cackle 😂😂😂
SAME
the velocity i clicked on this video is unmatched
I've got a lot of mixed opinions on the guy, but that part with him talking about billie eilish was genuinely very sweet
i was such a contrarian little shit as a kid that i actively hated on justin beiber. my family thought this was hysterical, so for several years at least one birthday/christmas present would be wrapped in justin beiber wrapping paper
So excited to watch!! I remember first hearing about Justin Bieber in 7th grade science class while we were watching a Livestream of the gulf oil spill. Truly a moment that changed my brain chemistry forever and he and that event can't be separated in my mind
Lmaoooooo
this reminds me (fittingly) of how i was doing a book report on Anne Frank’s book in high school whenever the Death of a Bachelor album came out and I listened to it exclusively while I worked in class. I can’t listen to any of those songs without thinking about Anne Frank. silly brains
Hair looks amazing diva
Did not realize how much the dormant 11 year old belieber in me needed this……..
does anyone else find some of the ways people talk about justin and diddy to be really creepy in a fetishy way? the way people come up with wild speculation about justin being victimized by diddy gives me the same vibes as those horrible fanfics/books about gay men suffering through terrible things for 300 pages, especially considering the weird obsession people had for years about justin not being traditionally masculine
People were creepy with these celebrities when they are minors. They did it with Brittany and the did the same with Justin. Like what the fuck
get 3 drinks in me at a house party and ill go full "justin bieber is our judy garland" rant
its criminal how underrated justins raw talent is. look how young he was shredding that guitar and staying completely on beat on the drums. not to mention obviously his amazing voice and perfect pitch
I love that stalker Sara had a mention here. To date my favorite Ashley Norton vid…
I found this channel recently and watched almost every video so I started watching the second channel 😭😭 the effort that you make for these videos FOR FREE are so good, and the humor is super relatable. THANKSSSS
not to be that guy but this is absolutely not for free there's literally a sponsor and there's adsense lol but of course I get your point: this compensation if not even more compensation is much deserved for her A1 content💯
17:39 literally sounds like it could have been a line from Bojack Horseman, how did you not even crack a smile after that you absolute legend
what i’m confused what could’ve??? riddle me that?? that’s a very common saying years and years and years before bojack
29:17 Sending that clip is absolutely GOATED, genuinely hilarious.
I've been listening to Justin Bieber again this year after finding my old CDs. I forgot how fun his music is! Bieber Fever is still alive and well for me. I remember that True Jackson Vp episode changed my life as a pre teen.
His obsession with Beyoncé is something that periodically comes to my head and yk what I get it
As a fellow Belieber, I absolutely love the way you approached this video and gave a good deep dive on his life.
1:12:01 ONE LESS LONELY GOOSE! 🤟
I just got off a therapy session and this is the perfect video to listen on my way home
Everyone forgets about the video of him and Selena look for drugs on skid row and it's my favorite controversy
It’s because Selena went and did a lot of volunteering right after. They both also spent a lot of time at church after that
Its bc you cant see their faces and it seems supee fake, like why would they need to go to skid row for drugs as celebrities?? They would have a friend or someone deliver it for them at least
I've never completely gotten over my strong negative reaction to Bieber as a 6/7 year old. I did not get him for a long time and I still don't like him artistically or personally that much. That being said, the bullshit grown ups threw at him as a kid was indefensible and it's not mine or anyone's place to shame his fans for enjoying the music he makes even if I can't get to it. It's hard to blame former child stars too much for their bad actions when they were never treated well by the world.
I remember being really confused by the hate towards him. I knew I, as a "boy" (I'm non binary now), was supposed to hate him, but I didn't get why
I remember being at a pool with a friend when Baby came on the radio and him being like "QUICK DIP YOUR HEAD UNDERWATER OR YOU'RE GAY!!!"
damn I really just started a sentence with "I remember being" twice
I only started hating Bieber when he started messing around in Brazil. I was not gonna let a gringo mess around here unscathed
(that only lasted like a week tho)
Also as someone who lived right next to the Anne Frank Huis, I'm glad I didn't hear about it back in the day.
I wasn't a fan of the fault in our stars for the same reason. Then years later I tried looking for a bench they sat on in the movie but just walked around in the summer heat for no reason because IT HAD BEEN STOLEN MULTIPLE TIMES
Late 2000s homophobia was wild, and irrational and in the time of "no homo tho"
ugh and do you remember how this nonsense was happening at the same time as the weird jokes about lady gaga? the late 2000s and early 2010s were just....
I love this for you - fellow Alexis 🎉💕
43:32 love the Fundie Fridays shoutout!!!
I. Love. These. I'm putting Beauty and a Beat back on my playlists!
ashley you forgot despacito drama!!!!!!!
Boyfriend really is the biggest “where my hug at” song
that killed me😂
Also, loving the bangs!
I’ve been LOCKED TF IN cleaning my bathroom while watching this thank you
one less lonely goose at the end i’m crying
RETURN OF GOOSE IN THE WIG my day is made, thank you.
I really appreciated this video, especially your points at the end about empathazing with his situation and not speculating further, etc.
I was personally a directioner so I fell for the rivalry between the two fandoms and didn’t really care for him or his music so I’m excited to learn about it all
Goose deserves a raise 😆
He’s ready to unionize
I needed something to watch as I play sims thanks Ashley
😆 I'm doing the same.
this video was so well done! i feel like recently a lot of people want him to be washed or irrelevant, but justin has a level of stardom that can’t be replicated and that a lot of his peers simply don’t have. in my opinion, he really is our last true pop star
when he was in his hillsong phase, he lived down the street from me with the pastor. i would drive by his house every day to go to work, and every day when i came home my dad would asl, "how's the biebs?"
I'm sorry, are we not going to talk about Justin Bieber's mom just casually hating Jews. Like what was that?
Right like no wonder he was making all those racist jokes. It always starts at home
this was such a good video, like how did I not know any of this and u hit all the right points per usual
Top tier vid as always😤👍
It's actually rlly refreshing to hear about his life without his love life being the focus
my mom was friends with patty and ive met her a few times, she's really nice. they haven't really talked in about ten years though since patty moved away.
very important correction: at 13:22 that's actually a Nintendo DSi not a Nintendo 3DS
