Oh boy, you should check all three of those songs but I'm going to toss in a beauty. His collaboration with Tyler Childers called Fraulein. This is something these two should do again. Country/Western and Americana would not be able to handle these two together and blow up......
This song was not actually written by Colter Wall, but by the great Ian Tyson, a fellow Canadian, and possibly finest cowboy singer-songwriter alive today
Ian Tyson is a legend and deserves to be! He is a great songwriter and was in his heyday one of the finest folksingers around. I still listen to his recordings all the time.
My Favorite part of Colter Wall’s music is his reverence for Ian Tyson’s material. There is so much of Ian Tyson’s music out there that has been covered by other artists and people just don’t know.
Alright I can understand your point...but Colter's voice...is just that deep emotional raw story telling type voice,he makes you believe that you are really there....
I’ve been a ranch hand my whole adult life, and I really appreciate that colter is singing songs about that life because there aren’t many in modern country accurately portraying it
Based on a true story. Bob Fudge wrote a famous autobiography about his time on the open range. Tyson read the book and was inspired to write the song.
Hi , nice video! I don't know if this was mentioned in all the comments but Bob Fudge was a real person and a real cowboy. My great grandfather Denby worked with him on the XIT cattle drives from Texas to Montana in the early turn of the century. They ended up working for the Hatchet Creek Ranch in Fallon , MT and Alden Denby started a Homestead Act homestead there. I remember stories about Bob Fudge and other cowboys and homesteaders in the Terry and Fallon Montana region where XIT cattle were brought
What's great about this Ian Tyson penned tune is that you realize it's the ghost of Bob Fudge that is singing the song. Its erie . Colter made it his own. Especially the ooh, ooh that he sings. I play this song a lot on my radio show on 92.7 the Bull in Las Vegas, New Mexico.
This song reminds me of my great grandma who passed at 112 years old, she used to tell stories of traveling by horse and wagon, getting into altercations with native Americans, to seeing the industrial revolution, automobiles, steam trains, the great depression... would be a really weird time to be alive.. wished I was old enough to pick her brain some more.
I have driven from Lampasas Texas to Montana a few times and I have been to or seen the sights in most of the exact places he describes in this song. I also have a deep emotional connection to the state of Montana. So just imagine how it makes a person feel to basically be sung to directly and completely out of the blue like that the first time I heard this song.
Additionally to his superb character storytelling, his words are cinematic. They place you in the scene, the landscape. Many of his songs are covers. I’ve listened to some of the originals. Colter has a way of making them better, more alive and realistic. He’s truly special.
If i am not wrong that is a 5 thousand guitar , 1937 Martin 00-17 . Still , two chords and it's all it needs to make us so interested in the story . Truly great
OK, For some real history about this song and Bob Fudge. It is a true story. (I know this because of my family's history. I grew up in WV and MT, where my family if from. ) First. The story of Lonesome Dove and the cattle drive to Montana is total Holly Wood BS. That cattle drive did happen, But it all took place in Texas. The first cattle drive from Taxes to Montana was made buy Nelson Story ( a relative of mine ) in 1866 along the Bozeman Trail. Shortly after that cattle drive Bob Fudge came up to MT with a herd of cattle. Bob Fudge wrote about his life in the book "Bob Fudge: Texas Trail Driver, Montana-Wyoming Cowboy” All true story's. When Colter Wall sings about what Bob Fudge said about seeing many young men die. Bob Fudge was not kidding. Hell! driving cattle from point A to B in Texas was deadly at that time in history. Driving cattle from TX to MT was very, VERY! deadly. BTW. That is not thunder you here in this video. It is the wind. Ask me how I know. :-) Lol
@@Jessehermansonphotography Yes, Sir If Holly Wood was smart, They would have made a movie about both cattle drives and maybe even about Bob Fudge. They do not want people to know Nelson Story was a Hillbilly that grew up on the Appalachian Plateau AKA Ohio River Valley. My family is from South Eastern Ohio and North Western W.Va. Heck, I do not think they want any American to know their real history.
This is a great cover of an Ian Tyson song. Colter also covers Tyson's "Summer Wages." Like Colter, Tyson is a real Canadian cowboy. Please check out Nick Shoulders, "Rise When the Rooster Crows," they just put up a video for it on Western AF.
I recommended this song on one of your last videos. Glad to see you check it out ! My favorite song of his and one of my favorite songs period. Keep up the good content bro 👍🏻 Edit: Saw at the end of the video you sending the shout outs ! Keeping it real man 💯🤙🏻
As I alluded to in the cowpoke reaction I'm glad he's found a more natural way of singing. As much as his brewery sessions were the thing that made him a legend you can tell he's comfortable
I have read Bob Fudge's book "Bob Fudge, Texas Trail Driver", it is an amazing book if you are into that kind of thing. Colter did a fantastic job on this song and deserving of singing out on the prairie. Originally written / performed by Ian Tyson.

love his songs, style, and lyrcis. he's bringing back the sounds of Bob Nolan, Rex Allen, Marty Robbins, Dale Evans, Tex Ritter, and the great Chris LeDoux
Absolutely, we need the great storytelling ability’s we found in people like bob Dylan, or Marty Robbins in today’s music and I 100% believe that we have that In colter.
This is the stuff I grew up listening to, trail riding songs, all about cowboys and running cows up and down the country. It's almost foreign now to hear any kind of musician actually tell a story, it's refreshing that the Hosers are picking up where our older generations left off.
Colter wall is authentic. Him and Benjamin Tod are legends . That most people have never heard of. They’re talent is so far beyond everyone else, that the closest to them couldn’t see them with a damn telescope.
Bud Benjamin Tod is awesome also I've found my way down a rabbit hole of "alternative" country and I'd sit and listen to them over any of the new stuff any day of the week
My grandfather was a rancher in Wyoming it was not my life ,but I know the country from Texas to Montana well and the History of the cattle trail's it's our history out here, and it was a short period of time.there was many men like Bob fudge. and many who didn't live that long.
