I love the reference to Blue Yodel #9. The Jimmie Rodgers classic, of course, starts with a line "'Standin on a corner/I didn't mean no harm". I believe Colter's meaning to the cop was, "I'm not doing anything wrong. I'm just sleeping one off here in the snow." Of course, the cop didn't get it and arrested him (apparently) for vagrancy, and then doubled-down and told him, " I bet you don't own a damn thing to your name." Then the chorus kicks in and Colter reminds him that he has his health, his John B Stetson, and a bottle full of Baby's Bluebird Wine. But he left his stash somewhere down in Preston, along (and this is very clever) with 13 Silver Dollars and "my mind". Obviously we can't "leave" our mind anywhere, so making this reference is like saying I'm a little out of my mind right now. Good way to put it in a song, Colter!
This is my favorite recording of this song. That smile Colter gives the bass player when he walks behind him; like he knows what Hes saying to him in his head. brings back my memories of playing in my punk rock band in HS. Having inside jokes about playing live or just playing music between the group.
I cannot express why but this is my favorite Colter Wall song. I play it a lot. I love the story telling and the references in it. Now you need to do his song John Byers also known as the Camaro song.
Brother. You didn’t mention the fact that blue yodel number nine is excellent mentioning that “my name you will find on the tail of my shirt, I’m a Tennessee hustler, i don’t have to work “. So good
Such a great song by Colter ,love the blue yodel reference Burt ,favourite part was when the fiddle player and the guys stepped up .Also the way he hammers those strings at the start ...always makes me smile
I NEED y’all to check out a band called The Wilder Blue, and start with a song called Janie Lynn. I’m not sure if it really qualifies as Americana (a lot of harmonies),but it’s definitely something you won’t hear on the radio and they need to be heard. I saw these guys live a week ago and haven’t stopped listening since!
Next Colter Wall I'd like to see you do is "Summer Wages", not just because he does it beautifully, which he does, but because it will give us a great introduction to the exquisite songwriting of the legendary Ian Tyson.
I admit the first time I heard Colter, I really wasn't into it. Thank God he grew on me, if not I would have missed out on some d*mn good writing and talent. This is a great song, and his voice is like a slow pour of Whiskey. Mellow with a burn to follow it up. Great choice.
There's a guy named Andy Hersey, an honest-to-God Arizona cowboy, who has some great tunes. For a killer story telling song, check out Compañero Blanco by him, if you're so inclined! He's no Colter, but pretty damn good in his own rights. Keep it up man!
Not sure if you’ve heard it by now but if you’re looking for good songwriting listen to “whisky lullaby” - brad paisley and Allison Kraus. All time favorite song of mine

How reference to blue yodel number nine , it’s a song about a guy minding his own business and a cop messing with him.
Makes a lot of sense!
That was such a clever lyric!
I got to see Colter with the band pre-covid at a small bar in Fayetteville AR. Awesome time!

Now I have to go google Blue yodel number 9. I really enjoyed this song. Simple living. Just let me be and do my thing. Good message.
Gallows Pole by Willie Watson of Old Crow Medicine Show!
Thanks for the recommendation!
Referencing both Jimmie Rodgers and Rodney Crowell in a 2 minute song is pretty awesome.

Wild Bill or Johnny boys bones.
Sounds good!
I am still wondering what the "one or two odd reasons" are that find CW with "no place to go" Oh, that's saved for another song.
You should react to Nick Shoulders’ song Snakes and Waterfalls! It’s awesome
I got my health, a John B Stetson, I got me a bottle full if baby's bluebird wine... a sentiment I can understand.
Could you check out his song Bald Butte? (His album version) He has a brewery session video but I would say his album version is better.
I can’t do album versions because of copyright issues but I can check out a live version!
If you like him with a band there’s a live cover of Big Iron here on TH-cam you should check out
Burt, is this the place to suggest a song for ya to check out?
