I loved the library when I was a kid. If I had seen that library when I was a kid I would have cried.

I would curl up on the floor between the stacks and read - the Moomins, the Black Stallion books, Japanese fairy tales (if you think American kid's tales can be gory....!). One of my big goals in life was to have my own subscription to "National Geographic" as an adult - and I have.
The premise of this video’s title is impossible. Someone can only be “embarrassed” if they are capable of humility. Someone is only capable of humility if they want to correct mistakes they’ve made, feel shame for the lies they’ve told, or remorse for the harm they’ve caused. You can’t shame the shameless.
Even if she turned a corner and apologized for her actions I'd still kick her to the curb. You cannot fix STUPID, HATEFUL, PEOPLE....and they don't deserve a second chance in my book. Leopards don't change their spots. With her it'd just be another con job.

My granddaughter is 23 and a junior in college studying Sociology. For the first time in her studies, she heard the phrase "Critical Race Theory." It's a University concept, not happening in elementary school.

Having been in the Illinois school system for 30 years, I absolutely unequivocally swear no Illinois elementary school has received billions of dollars for anything.

The book banning is by far one the most horrendous things Desantis has done to the education system. I grew up on books. My parents once freaked out because I went out to "play" as a child and they couldnt find me for hours. Truth is, I'd walked myself to the library, sat there and read through the new Animorphs.
I also read about many subjects well before I'd been exposed to them in other ways. Because I was allowed to read whatever I wanted pretty much, when I was 11 and bored and stuck at my aunts I found her copy of romance novels. I picked one up and read it, including a scene in which the heroine is raped. I had no concept of rape, but I have to say, of all the ways to be exposed this had to be easily the least scarring. I knew it was wrong, obviously, because it hurt the main character, and I felt bad for her. I had questions, but over all I came out of it knowing that rape was a crime, that people who are raped deserved empathy, and that you should never, ever force someone to "love" you (I was 11).
Of course, that's exactly WHY Desantis takes such issue with books. They can introduce you to new subjects, good or bad, and help teach you empathy and morals. Not only that, but critical thinking skills are strengthened by reading. How dare they have books with gay characters that may cause children to empathize with LGBTQ individuals! How dare they nuture a child's ability to think critiyally and form their own opinions, their own moral compass!? These things can't be allowed!
Children should have access to all sorts of books, even ones we disagree with. Yes, some should come with context, but thats what annotations and classes are for, but we do far more damage to children when we "protect" them from books than we do good.

My now adult children used to complain to me that they weren’t even allowed to go to the library at their middle school here in Texas. The students weren’t allowed to enter the school until the 5 minute warning bell sounded. They were in class all day, weren’t allowed to go during lunch and it closed an hour before school was out. This year a lot of books were banned at the schools. To Kill A Mockingbird used to be a required reading assignment and is now banned.

Just a little tidbit here... After my first trip to an allergist when I was 4 (severely, dangerously asthmatic) my folks got rid of their gas stove for an electric on the advice of my doctor. This would have been in the late 50's.

I totally agree. As a child with undiagnosed autism who was being raised in a horribly dysfunctional family, books were my only escape. Every day I could I was at our tiny local library, checking out the limit of 10 books at a time. I barely slept, and every waking moment I was buried in books. The republicans who are in support of banning books are truly disgusting, and they obviously have no idea how much they are taking from children. More accurately, on second thought, they just don’t care what they’re taking from children.

If a single school got that much funding, they would be thrilled they can actually pay their teachers a livable wage. The cafeterias would provide filet mignon instead of caramelized cardboard. FOR FIVE BILLION DOLLARS THAT BETTER BE AN IVY LEAGUE MIDDLE SCHOOL THAT EXISTS IN HER MIND!
In my high school (Texas), we had some book banning years ago, and books that were banned were segregated in the library, and hidden behind a white sheet with a sign on it "Banned books, do not look here." And if you took a banned book to the librarian, she would say "we aren't allowed to loan that book out, but since we don't have it, we wouldn't know if it went missing. Bring it back so others can read it."
So yeah, the banned section saw action, and worked as well or better than the non-banned section, and no books were denied to us.
Never challenge a librarian when it comes to free speech. I bet that empty library was empty because the rules on content were so vague, everything could count, so, rather than leaving in the obvious OK books, they took everything out, so show there are no books under censorship.

Thing is, a very quick google search says that for Financial Year 2023, the US Department of Education in it's entirety has been allocated $89.76Bn. So to think or believe that any one school, is getting even $1Bn let alone 5, you'd have to be still in need of the full range of services that the US Department of Education provides...

I read Fahrenheit 451 in high school and thought it was interesting how many things Bradbury predicted--we're pretty much to the point of mechanical hound police dogs and wall-sized televisions. But I thought, "At least we'll never ban reading, that's way too crazy." And now here I am, suddenly shivering from the whiplash of a funny comedy show crashing into sudden, sheer dread for the future.
So that's cool. I never have to wonder now how characters end up in seemingly farfetched dystopian futures. Neat.

As someone who is socially anxious, I don't think that is why people know she's lying. I get awkward too when it comes to looking at people in their eyes, even when I have no reason to, or even when I'm trying to talk into a cameras. Also, some neurotypical people have that problem, even when they're not lying.
It's usually because her statements are so outrageous and far fetched, and not based on actual facts, that nobody believes her. Even if we were judging based on just a transcript of her statements, we know she's lying.
