My mother was a middle school librarian for 30 yrs and due to budget cuts, was in charge of all libraries in the district, which also included 3 elementary schools, for the last 15 yrs and of course you're right that porn is not part of the inventory, nor is it part of the children's section of public libraries. Book banning idiots like DeSantis love to claim that only "media specialists" should be choosing school library books but that's exactly what those children's librarians are!!! The majority of schools require their librarians to have a Masters in Library Science (my Mom got hers in the 80s when very few schools offered it) and many programs have a concentration in children's literature but these book bans prove their argument of keeping kids safe is just a political stunt, otherwise they wouldn't require the librarians to have the expertise they do. I remember my Mom getting the ALA's annual "top banned books of the year" newsletter so I know book bans are nothing new but the rise of the far-right in the last decade has pushed them into high gear. As a teacher in Escambia county, where we banned the penguin book, I'm disappointed at how our constituents act. I'm disappointed that ignorant parents and, mostly, ONE old white woman (I have read the pull requests, her name is on 95% of them) are holding such power over teachers here. Several school districts have outright banned any books with black protagonists, calling them woke. NPR did an interview with one of the authors who attested that the book had no objectionable content. It was about a black kid going to school, having a happy time, and going back to his happy home and loving family. The author wanted positive, happy books for a black audience and that not every book with black heroes had to be about struggle or historical trauma. The NPR interviewer and the author came to the conclusion that the book was banned for being "woke" simply by having a black protagonist. That same story is repeated for other heroes of different ethnicity, religions, and LGBT characters. We are facing academic erasure.

Living in Florida, I am constantly puzzled at how the politicians only remove freedoms from constituents instead of addressing the very real problems of increasing homelessness, higher than national average inflation, unaffordable housing, lack of community resources in any but the richest neighborhoods, teacher shortages, increasing gun violence, etc. and somehow they still have support?
Because the policies conservatives push are designed to reinforce the existing social and economic hierarchies. That's literally the whole thing conservatives want to conserve. They see the government not as one potential means of improving quality of living but as a necessary tool of enforcing order. Their posturing about "individual freedoms" has never been true unless you read it as "freedoms of certain specific types of individuals (specifically, the ones at the top of current hierarchies)". The left-right divide has always been between supporters of equality/democracy and supporters of the king/establishment.

Haha this is not at all true. Bibles are not allowed in school in 99 percent of the counties until high school. Which by then they have already had sex ed (reproductive and safe sex practices only) so they've already been introduced to it. Oh, and don't forget about all the incest in the Old Testament. Apparently, God twice, started building up the human race through incest. (Yuck!) Adam and Eve's children, supposable only had siblings and parents as potential people, to mate with. Same for the Noah Ark story. All of humanity, except for Noah, his wife, their daughters & their daughter's husbands, where wiped out. And Abraham, is considered The Father of All Nations, but he was married to his sister, Sarah! -- Then there is the Religious sanctioned rape! Shocking, but's there. Written down in the Holy Scriptures. --- And what's up with all the God ordered genocide, that's told of In the Old Testament? (Which included murdering the infants as well as all the animals). I believe it's in John 3:16, where it says "For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, ..." Soooooo, according to scripture, God not only created and loves all people, but He on several occasions, ordered one group of people to comment genocide on another group of people. To me, this in no way sounds like love. And it is the opposite of what Jesus taught. And Jesus is suppose to be the Word of God, made flesh, who walked among mankind. Meaning that when you see how Jesus feels about, and interacted with, people, you're seeing how God feels about, and interacts with, people. Jesus taught the opposite of using violence on your fellow man. The guy who wanted to ban 'And Tango Makes Three' said that he didn't want children to be "indoctrinated", and then immediately goes on to QUOTE THE BIBLE; the irony is rich and thick.
The same can be said for Kari Lake using sexual slang on something that is broadcasted and could be seen by children...anything remotely sexually tends to be shamed by them relentlessly because of "THINK OF THE CHILDREN!!" but at the same time: "Let me show how fucking hypocritical I am and use sexual slang in a political gathering".

The man objecting to the penguin book also raises an interesting point. It hints heavily at how unconstitutional the law is. "Jesus said go and sin no more so this is against the law." Except something going against your religion is not basis for being against the law. If it is, then the law allows you to enforce your religion on others, so it is most definitely unconstitutional.
When I was in Elementary school I knew I was gay. It didn’t bother me. What made it difficult was how unaccepting and cruel my classmates were to me. The books being removed weren’t necessarily for students like me. It was to inform others on how to treat people and that being gay was not wrong.
Yup yup! The actual indoctrination here is the Christian nationalists who WANT their kids to grow up hating lgbt+ people and can't stand the idea of wholesome children's books about male penguins who raised a baby (gasp) together
And the worst part about that is, when it becomes more 'acceptable' then more people feel comfortable expressing themselves. This is then weaponized to say that oh look now more and more kids are gay. When in reality they already were, the numbers didn't change, just the freedom to express it.

OK, let's touch on the "hardcore pornography" in the library. IF such a thing existed, there would be two sure-fire ways to figure it out. #1 all of the teenage boys would be in the corner giggling about it, or #2 the book would be perpetually checked out and unavailable. My guess is if there is any such book in FL libraries, it's probably called "Thigh Food."

Jon Oliver is so selective on his reporting, it's rediculous. Also, he leaves out laws passed in New York which shut down vendors which increased police interactions which also increased people protesting and becoming more involved with police brutality? every reporter should start all their questions with a clarifying statement to DeSantis, "Its pronounced Thai food." Or ask him if he still pronounces Thai food as Thigh food for the rest of his political career.
The very fact that DeSantis doesn't want anyone (let alone a date) correct him, is a GIANT AZZ RED FLAG of a narcissistic psychopath - he's just Trump 2.0 in a meatball suit. we don't need soulless bullies as leaders.
When I was ten, I had a step-dad who snapped at me for gently correcting his pronunciation over family dinner. I was fortunate to have had her for a mother, less so to have experienced that pos for a father figure.

There is a time and place for everything.
My father was a wonderful man -- strong, the leader of our family, and someone my mother was totally, permanently in love with. They were married for forty years. After he died, she had absolutely no interest in ever dating anyone again. He was a tremendous father figure, and made me into a really good father myself.
I feel like the Thai food thing started because he genuinely mispronounced it on a date one time and when corrected was like, “uhhh, SIKE!” all flustered and embarrassed while pretending he flubbed it on purpose. Because he 100% seems like THAT guy. 😂😂😂
There is no way to mispronounce “Thai” as “thigh” unless you have a “Thai”-ny penis and also think that “orgasm” is an alternate spelling of “organization.” To summarize: Mr. Florida Governor is an impotent ten-year-old.
I don't know about that one. Pronouncing it "Thigh Food" in the context of a date sounds less like a genuine mistake and more like an attempt to make some kind of innuendo.

Moderates told the world in 2020 that they don't want Trump, but they see DeSantis, a conservative (who are, for some reason, regarded as the party of fiscal responsibility and small government overreach despite recent legislation proving very much the opposite) in a struggling economy as a more reasonable option.

There are two genders, male and woke. Two races, white and woke. Two religions, Catholic and woke. Two sexualities, straight and woke. Everything they hate is just "woke" to them.
spot on.
And can claim it isn't a slur, while using it as one.
There’s a video during the 1/6 nonsense of a bunch of white guys surrounding and harassing a a passer-by old black lady with a grocery cart yelling “BLM! BLM!” at her just because they can’t directly say the n word. It took another white guy to put his arms around her and get her out of that group before something worse happened. Saw it on twitch live.
Thank you for sharing that. I didn't know that that was happening, am very sad for the authors who are getting their books unfairly pulled, and am very curious what author you are talking about because that sounds like a great book for my cousins and I'd like to get it for them.

right? my thoughts exactly! One would think that the state of Florida is so perfect that it has no other problems or issues to be resolved that the only way this wanna-be Agent Orange can justify his job is by doing what he's been doing.
The gun violence goes up because people are treated inhumanely. It's not the drugs causing all that pain. It's the stink eye from people.

Sooooooo, again, only siblings and parents would have been available to mate with, to build up the human race. There is different scenarios for being corrected. In a relaxed atmosphere of chitchat most people wont mind. If you are talking about a serious topic, potentially trying to get your child to understand something important, or if you just scolded them, and they tell you that you mispronounced a word, thats totally inappropriate.
