    Hi from Europe. Manual driver's advice: learn when shift gears by sound. Motor will tell you what it needs. In the end it will be natural and automatic for you. Every car is diferent. Diferent wear and tear. You can't depend on spins. But it can help. Look on spins and remember sound. (I can't drive automat. :D )

    I am quite old. My first car(1974) was a manual transmission 1966 Mustang. I loved that car for all of the 2 months that I owned it. (Huge wreck. I got hit. Totaled car. Many tears.) My second car was also a 1966 Mustang. (Not quite as nice as the first one, but I still loved it.) I wore out 3 transmissions in that one because I was not shifting conservatively. I confess. I was 'speed shifting' because my brother taught me how and I was unaware of the level of damage that was possible in that style if you are not super, super smooth - and I wasn't. This is how I learned to build a transmission, because Daddy was NOT happy with me. Or my brother. Or my guy friend. Or his many spies who had not ratted me out. lol

  • @johnson8950
    @johnson8950 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    I like to explain the process of learning to drive a manual transmission as a dance. You listen to the music, that's the engine when it speeds up you move your feet on the clutch and you move your hands you shift up. Or you do it the other way to slow down. Listen to the engine and watch your speed. Just like learning to dance it takes practice.

    This is so wholesome! Becky's doing a great job and understands the mechanics better than I do even after spending almost a year learning manual with an instructor. It's great that Austin can teach you the basics, takes some of the fear out of it. Where I live you are only allowed to drive with someone supervising you providing they've had their full license for at least two years. My boyfriend's only had his for a year so he can't take me out sadly. Best of luck with the driving! You got this! ❤

    Becky, my advice is to watch Austin's feet and listen to the engine. That will get your brain used to listening to the engine noise so shifting will become automatic. You got this girl!

    You did great, Becky! Driving stick will become so intuitive you won't need to think about it. Learned on dad's '69 Beetle just one day before he and most of my brothers were heading out on vacation. He wanted me to be able to drive mom and other sibs around while they were gone. Short practice in a church parking lot and then out on the streets. Trickiest was steep streets covered in ice and snow (Minnesota winters!) Years later, that VW would become my first car. Continued to buy standard transmission cars until accident which made driving stick difficult.

  • @jademartens9127
    @jademartens9127 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Becky, it’s super helpful to feel the “sweet spot” of the clutch. When you push it down you’ll feel a point where it gives resistance. To switch gears smoothly, you’re going to let up on the clutch to the “sweet spot” and then give gas at the same time. But great job! I learned on a Honda without a tachometer, I spent a long time driving without music to hear when to switch gears, and then at some point learned when to do it based off the vibration of the clutch (while blasting music too loud as a 16 year old)!

    The way I got experience driving a vehicle with a manual transmission was that I just got in (alone)and winged it..stalled out at a few stoplights before being able to keep it running and shift more smoothly. The hilarious part was my three year old son and his friend thought it was real fun jerking and rolling around in the back of the hatchback as the car lunged around. 🤣

    Great job, Becky!! I was a teenager in the 90s, so most of the used cars available were manual so I was forced to learn at 16 years old and it's like riding a bike: you will NEVER forget how to drive a stick after you've done it before. 😍😍

  • @deadlyNightshade789

    As a German who initially learned how to drive on a manual (in fact I've never driven an automatic and tbh the thought that the car has the control over the gears instead of me scares me a little 😅) your approach honestly baffled me. My driving instructor just placed me behind the wheel and told me what to do (fucked up terribly the first couple of tries and I still feel sorry for that poor burnt clutch. Started with doing burn-outs right away and didn’t even know it lol). I just recently a few years ago after twelve years of driving got into cars and taught myself what goes on under the hood and it would have intimidated me to no ends to learn how to drive if I had known all of that before knowing how to actually DO it. Because it all looks and sounds so complicated when you don't know how it works yet but this is a machine that people built over decades and it's made to be as simple while functional as possible. And while it's a very complex machine, it's been built to be operated intuitively. So for the beginning I would advise you to look at the meter and switch gears whenever you reach a certain speed/rpm but the thing is, with time, you stop doing that. It just becomes second nature. In a way, you become one with the car and you can tell by the sound of the engine and the way the movement of the car feels in your body when it's time to switch gears and you literally stop thinking about it. And personally I think it makes driving so much more fun! You'll see 😊

    I do always forget there's a world without manual!!
    I taught my sister to move off when she was learning. You should actually be able to move off by just lifting the clutch to the biting point when in 1st gear without adding gas - usefull when in stationary traffic. In newer cars, That 70s van might struggle 😅

  • @louibeans
    @louibeans 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

    I think a lot of us Europeans (German here) don't really get taught the mechanical side. We just learn "yep you press the clutch and put in the gear" as you learn how to drive a car. I've been driving for decades not knowing the mechanical side to driving a manual, haha. But it was interesting to learn!

    I love this! A few years ago my boyfriend and I bought a 1985 Toyota Dolphin which is an RV and I learned to drive standard on that! I was so scared that I would crash it hahahha I cried so many times. After we moved into it I was too scared to drive so my boyfriend drove us EVERYWHERE and one day he had enough and forced me to drive and I was SO SCARED but then I did it and drove for a few hundred miles! I learned how to drive on a manual car when I was 20-21yrs old. I'm from Costa Rica and manual cars are still pretty prevalent. It's been 13-14yrs now & I'm a bit tired of it. My leg gets tired form the clutch while in traffic so I will be switching to automatic whenever I change my car. I'm also a bit of an anxious driver, so not having to think about switching gears will help with that. Although, whenever I drive an automatic I feel the urge to press the non-existing clutch and switch gears because it becomes second nature LOL. I still think everyone should learn to drive manual, it's a great skill to have.

    I'm 24 years old Portuguese girl and I got my driver's license at 18 for cars and this year for motorcycles and most cars here are manual so even tho automatic cars exist I've never driven one.
    I didn't really have an option cause here everybody has to learn to drive a manual at driving school.
    But this year I decided to get my motorcycle driving license and, for those who don't know, you switch gears with your left foot, accelerate, and press the clutch with your right and left hand respectively so it was waaaaaay different than driving a car. I was terrible at first and wanted to give up but had already paid for the full thing so had no choice but to keep going and i actually managed to pass both exams first try and now have a new skill!
    All that to say that I KNOW how intimidating that can be but you got this! 😊

    Becky, you can do it! I learned on a stick and swore I’d never switch over to an automatic…;) now I am driving an electric car 🤷‍♀️ no gears at all… It’d be a switch to go back (for me), but it’s really not such a big deal, you just need to get accustomed again, much like you need to fix the mirrors and the seat in any new car or when somebody else has been driving yours. So, you will learn this, it’s just a mind switch and really, once you’re on a highway, no need to switch gears ;) it’s really only the when you’re accelerating or slowing down. You can start by driving mainly on highways and skip the trickier part driving through towns where you have to slow down. You go, girl!!

    I live abroad in Europe and almost everything is manual. I am terrified of killing the engine while in traffic so needless to say my practice only occurs occasionally in the middle of nowhere. Get practice on stopping on hills in the middle of nowhere….trust me lol. Good job Becky!

    Wow, you did so well in learning the all stepts that is needed for a manual car.
    I have 6 years of experience in driving and I never had driven a automatic car, so I can understand that it can be very complicated for people who never had this option. I am from Romania, so in our country moust of the cars are manual and even the driving school is made on a manual car.
    Anyway, I can say that it will be a little tricky for you, but with practice I think you will do great.🤗

    One of the things that finally made manual transmissions click for me was my friend explaining it like a bike. If you switch your gears too high on a bike you can't pedal, it's just too hard. That's the same for the car; if you switch to too high of a gear without enough momentum it will stall the engine because it doesn't have enough power to push that higher gear.

    Congrats on learning the standard transmission! I learned at 16. Haven’t driven a standard in about 35 years…
    Love the sheets; my paternal grandmother always had percale sheets. They’re my favorite… I need to update my linens!

    This is so much fun to see more women not being afraid to get into automotive! I am rebuilding my 1996 Geotracker with my Fiance and we are ready to put the transmission back in with the new clutch! He taught me how to drive manual when we first started dating and I would sweat so badly haha I once stalled in the middle of a turning intersection, I was so nervous but practice made it second nature and I drive my 94 manual mazda miata to work everyday! Its soo much fun except in traffic haha this video reminds me of when I first started learning and how far I came, and you will too! Proud of you!

    When I learned how to drive a manual on the column everything was great until I got stopped on a hill and the person behind me was so close that I knew I was going to drift back and hit him. The hardest part about driving that van was going in reverse and parking. You did great evidently your way works for you.

    We learn manual where I am from and don't worry, you'll get the trick pretty quickly. With experience, you'll also learn to "feel" it and know when you need to switch gear. Living now in Canada, I am in the opposite situation, and I was a little confused when driving an automatic at the beginning, my right hand was looking for the gear and my left foot for the clutch :D

    becky i feel you on this one, i'm working on fixing up my 1989 jeep wrangler yj and finally getting the hang of driving stick has def been a challenge... i've been involved in the auto world my whole life and we def need to empower the girlies to join us!!! it ain't just men anymore!
    i know once i'm comfy with manual it'll be easy but starting off always is difficult! i've done it a few times over the years but have never gotten good enough at it that i've been confident on the road. the reason i haven't learned sooner is due to my anxiety and i finally feel like i'm in a place where i can handle it and work through it. so proud of you for taking the big leap into this journey!

    I've known how to drive a manual for almost 10 years now, and had no idea what so ever how it works. Thanks for the class, Becky.

    Let's be honest neither Austin nor anyone who can drive manual has any idea of what you just told us (unless ofc they're a car mechanic or enth!siast) This knowledge absorption was very impressive!
