Everyone commenting on your “tone” being abrasive or off, need to listen closer to when he unsolos the guitars and bass.. all of a sudden the drums sound huge the guitars + bass are crunchy .. it’s a good mix
Generally that's true, but I think it also depends about the style and approach you are going for. For example in Vildhjarta's new album I feel the main focus is on the guitars and the ambience(even thought the drums and bass do sound pretty monumental too).
Holy shit you have a great ear. Thank you for not going slow and talking about every single move you made. I loved seeing how you treated the different frequency ranges. You know exactly what your looking for in order to make the bass compliment the guitar
It's very funny to watch people who think they understand at least something in mixing criticize Buster. It would be very interesting to hear what they would have done with these sources
Sometimes people really puzzle me. You don't have to love this style, but to go as far as to say the "low end is wimpy," or "I can't tell what notes the guitars are playing"... really? You can't hear what chords the guitars are playing? It's clear as day. This mix works amazingly well for the style. Crisp, punchy, in-your-face and aggressive while having enough control to be listenable at high volumes. Judging something by how it sounds in solo, as many people here seem to do, is a pretty great way to show how little you actually know. :)
Yeah that absolutely what I'm trying to figure out here. I don't know how he's certain what to carve out. I feel like thats the most challenging part of mixing is knowing what frequencies to cut and boost to actually get the sound you're looking for from each instrument without them occupying the same space
ah yes, the Saturn trick (i don't own it so have to jump a hoop of putting a separate splitter and any pedalboard/amp distortion except for the low end which basically is just being compressed lol).
Great engineers usually don't talk when they are doing something difficult. Buster is a badass mixer and I've watched his streams more than most for NTM. He may not explain well for a beginner, but he isn't doing beginner shit
It’s def an artistic choice. While it’s characteristic of “modern metal” it has been around for a while. Anything involving tight chugging patterns that match the drums, like Meshuggah and Fear Factory have been doing since the mid 90s. Won’t be everyone’s cup of tea of course. It sounds bad in solo but I think it hits hard in the full mix.
@@docw85 Yup. I like my gate really tight while I’m playing too - as tight as I can get it without choking out certain notes. But this could never be achieved without editing lol. But it serves the recording well.
I was debating with people saying Les Claypool would be an awesome bass player for Megadeth because of his funk and psychedelia... I was explaining Les Claypool is not heavy and would not sound good in Megadeth with all the prog funk wankery and trying to explain why bass makes guitars sound heavy in a metal mix. Now I can just link this video.
@@ianmoran8004 you must be replying to the wrong dude, cuz that mix at the end sounds fucking brutal. Also you must have never heard Born of Osiris because "gainy static" does not describe their sound at all.
@@shanelarue8162 Putting Tape saturation evens out the lows and highs and gives samples a more analog feels to it and helps it lock in with everything else.
ive noticed a lot of people(at least "amateurs") who do this and dont notice they have pokey shit in the low end. I've done this myself too, gotten really thick low end tones and been like "wow this sounds huge" but not realized 1 or 2 of the notes being played is WAY too fucking loud in comparison to the rest of the bass part, so in cars especially your bass sounds super uneven and some parts are okay or even great but then certain notes its just way too much
Lol art is subjective...and here you all are having a wank about what sounds good and what doesn't. You realize you all can go mix something yourself the way you wish?
GhettoTorture if mixing famous bands requires me to dial in tones that sounds like someone keeps flipping an on/off switch on a detuned am radio, I’m good
I really dont understand how people think this style of production sounds good. Like you said, to me it sounds like a lot of gainy static lol. You shouldnt need 7 EQs on a bass for it to sound good imo
To me the guitar and bass tones don't sound good. Why do you need 7 EQs on a bass to make it sound good? They sound like flat gainy static to me. I love the channel, just my honest opinion.
I think part of the reason is to lower the volume of the bass frequencies where he wants to have the guitar shine through and raise the volume of bass frequencies where he wants those bass sounds to stand out. But yeah, too much EQ can be a bad move. Just gotta let your ears guide you.
He is going for a really specific sound, which calls for a lot of eq. Plus this is all in solo, which the point of is to dial in things so they fit in context with the rest, not to sound amazing on their own
i agree that 90% of music doesnt need such specific shaping but this is a style known for being over processed and thats what everyone does. thats what the song calls for but i agree, I would rather hear some actual bass sound instead of just the subs since the high end of the bass is pretty much entirely buried with guitars and drums let alone when vocals come into play as well
I will also say that in a lot of modern metal recordings I love the music and album but I feel like the vocals, keys and drums overpower the guitars and bass. Maybe because they cut out so many frequencies to make it "fit" the mix? Just thinking out loud. Nothing but respect for buster.
I love this sound. I haven't listened to metal for like 15 years, I really like Busters sense of tone, texture, drive. It sounds really musical and exactly in my taste. Almost like its an natural extension in tones from classic rock bands like AC/DC etc, modern but still with an air of nostalgia for me.
Gotta love when everything is so over processed you can barely even hear the fundamental in the guitar or bass lol. Great mixer, but sounds like borderline white noise.
@@CrzyWzrd4L White noise itself does not have a strong fundamental since all of the frequencies in it are played at the same level. The guitars and bass should always compliment the drums. If the drums sound good in a heavy mix, your track is going to sound phenomenal.
