  • It's been a year since I started in foundation year Engineering at the University of Brighton! How did I find it? Was it worth my time? Should I have stayed in school for another year in hope of better grades?
    Let's talk about it!

    I'm doing a foundation year in bioscience this September and have experienced a few of the other new students tell me it's not worth it (they are mostly 18/19 year olds who have just finished their A-Levels) but for me being a mature student who's not done science since the age of 16 (now 25) I think it's the right option for me. Your video has made me feel more confident in my decision so thank you! :)

    There are so may things I love about this video. The intro was fantastic, the editing was perfect throughout and I genuinely learned so much. It was funny as well!!

      I used to look down on “Foundation Year” courses when I was in school because they came across as a losers course. I couldn’t have been more wrong. Turns out not only did it teach me the stuff I liked but struggled at during A level much better through hands on elements and demonstrations but also covered more or less all of Semester 1 of first year so it gave me a head start. However, I’ve said it before to others and I’ll say it again. Just because it worked this well for me doesn’t mean it works for everyone. Some really like the science and stuff but really struggle on maths etc, some just simply find out they don’t like engineering all together, some also do brilliantly so there’s no fixed answer to how one will find it, it’s different for everyone.

    I’m currently in my Foundation Year of Engineering at Brighton and my god. It’s not like I expected. Less than a month into it and we have our maths exam soon! Because the modules change in the second semester everything is crammed. For both labs we have done so far, we haven’t been told what to do, just given a sheet and left with it. Hopefully this will be helpful, big up the foundation project though, besides the drag of group work, it’s fun!

    Ok, I have several questions, first i am an year 11 student (GCSE) who will finish GCSEs in a few months then what i will do is i will have 2 choices. One : take A-Levels and pass it (probably) and then go to uni. 2: i can apply for foundation year but there is a GIAGANTIC problem, i just don't think i am ready for it and i think i might not pass and then fail. so i am under alot of pressure and i am really pressured; it would mean the world to me if you would reply and give me a suggestion i really don't know what to do and if i can apply for a foundation would i get a scolarship if i get A's on my GCSEs (year 11 exams) please reply i wanna hear what you have to say. (i really wanna go to foundation but i think im rushing so i need you to help me make a choice or atleast tell me what i can do...

    i’m struggling with physics in the engineering foundation as I just finished gcse’s and doing it online for now. Do you think even though the work is very hard the exams will be easier? thanks

    To anyone, I'm in year 13 and are doing Physics, Computer Science and Economics A level. For a foundation year, and i know that you dont need any specific subjects for a foundation year but, would A level maths be needed or will the foundation year help with the math i missed out on?

    • @edgarscrooples6833
      @edgarscrooples6833 ปีที่แล้ว

      I might be 3 months too late but you do not need any related A-Levels to do a foundation course - you don't need maths because the foundation course will teach you all the maths you need

    Do you think its worth me doing a science foundation year at uni? Last time i did science was at GCSE and got grade 5s (highest possible in foundation set), but i remember i didnt enjoy science at all. It didnt make any sense to me but maybe it was just the teacher’s methods that didnt suit my learning style. I think im gonna study forensic science at uni but i havent done any sciene A levels so I’ll have to do a foundation year.

    • @iyousefq8684
      @iyousefq8684 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      i was in your situation but didn’t do a levels. currently in foundation and it’s good so far just physics is hard af

    • @Gabi-jy8ih
      @Gabi-jy8ih 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      dryfuture maybe there is some way for me to tailor the foundation year towards forensic science and take out the physics, i struggle with physics a lot too. Good luck with your studies!!

      Yes. Better still you’ll be about a semester ahead by the time you start first year

    Why did u choose foundation year?

  • @gdoth7186

    I didn’t do maths for a level, how difficult will it be to learn all that maths content?

    • @StuartChau500
      @StuartChau500  4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      That’s hard to say because it differs for everyone. Some people who have never done maths (and/or any other related subjects) found it do-able while others just simply don’t get it. A few people came in without doing the right subjects (didn’t do Maths and/or other sciences) and some stayed on because they started to find interest in the course while others struggled and decided it wasn’t the course for them.

      Stuart Chau would retaking physics while doing this foundation year be a good idea, as I didn’t really get a good grade in it. Plus what grade did u achieve that year?

    • @StuartChau500
      @StuartChau500  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Unless the uni or your job asks you to, it shouldn’t be a problem not retaking it (you can if you really want to). But of course, don’t take my word for it. The idea of Foundation year is to boost you up to the required standard anyway so if you pass Foundation year, you’ll get into first year and do ok. I went with grades weren’t exactly good and I still passed Foundation year by quite a bit. At uni, we don’t talk about “grades”, just the 40% pass mark for Foundation and First years. Second and third however, how much you pass by WILL count because your average marks affect what class of degree you’ll leave with.

    Did you have exams for foundation year??

    • @StuartChau500
      @StuartChau500  4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Yes there are but I personally think they’re nowhere near the level of difficulty of A-Levels. Don’t get me wrong, they do cover comparable topics, the exams and teaching methods are just very different.
