    I've been involved in Computer Vision for a long time now (in a third world country). I was part of a team that built an internal product similar to Scale AI (data-labelling) around 3, 4 years before these guys. This was an internal product that was never intended for public release.
    What Scale AI did was something everyone was already doing in silos, i.e. exploiting workers for data labelling. The only difference is that he made a service out of it. Whereas others only did it for their own companies (internal-only). This is often not discussed when people talk about the dark side of Scale AI. The guy didn't invent the dark side, it already existed, he just capitalised on it better (cuz silicon valley).

    I don't usually comment but I feel obliged to say, thank you so so much for this! I was always very interested in scale ai but I didn't understand what they really did and I couldn't find anyone explaining what they did exactly. This video was sufficiently comprehensive and even addressed things that I didn't even know were happening like the dark side of scale ai. I also liked that you explained things like APIs in a very understandable way with good examples which was also something that I didn't see a lot. If I could give any advice, I'd say I'd prefer if there was less stock photos and more slides like at 1:58 which was a visual but also explanatory but that might be a personal preference for me.Either way, keep up the good work!

    Would scale ai be considered SAAS? Also, is it true that Scale ai at first was an ML agency company? Thanks for the quality video!

    • @DarkModeDigest
      @DarkModeDigest  10 หลายเดือนก่อน +12

      if by SAAS you mean Software as a Service, then kind of. They do provide software to help companies build their AI and LLMs like Spellbook. But I see them more of a service-based company (at least for now) where they help annotate, curate, and collect companies' data to power their own AI applications.
      As for your 2nd question, they kind of were an ML agency. More like they provided taskers on demand for things like content moderation, data labeling, etc. Not specifically for AI, then pivoted to focus on AI once there was a huge demand for it.
      Glad you found this video insightful!

    • @IIGrudge
      @IIGrudge 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      I would say they are a combination of both SaaS and consulting firm similar to Palantir. If you have a unique use case, they can tailor their pipelines to your needs given you shell out the $$. I think their end goal is pure SaaS where they sell their labeling models to companies.

      @@DarkModeDigest Having been involved is the installation of several corporate data systems, and even creating fundamental design specs for the inhouse IT to built systems. THAT WAS THE BIGGEST CHALLENGE, putting labels on the data so it was stored in a way that the software would produce reports that had some meaning. And this was so even when it was an accounting system, a plant maintenance management system, a parts and materials management system etc. There was no two people that could agree on a naming or categorizing system for the data, and then even the people actually entering the data had their own ideas about what "category" code to place a transaction data in. This got even worse when there were two or three levels of categories used to classify the transaction data. Then for years there has been all these promises of IT data "analysis" and "reporting". Implying that the data did not have to be "pre-structured" and "categorized" for IT to produce "meaningful reporting". Is that just a big BS S**t Pile???
