I am an ELCA Lutheran from South Carolina. I play the piano and organ. Today (November 4, All Saints' Sunday), we sang this as our Hymn of the Day. I filled in at a local Lutheran Church today and played it as the Opening Hymn. It is #632 in Evangelical Lutheran Worship. And let us give thanks to those who have gone before us.
This song is a great blessing to the world, may the precious soul of him who received this inspiration rest on in God's perfect peace till the morning of resurrection, Amen
I have sung this song for decades now. But I never noticed a phrase that occurs in the first and last stanzas: "and our eternal home." In the first stanza, we ask God to be our help, our hope and our shelter. In the last stanza, we ask God to be our help, our hope and our guard. Both stanzas end with us asking Him to be our eternal home. I confess, I usually think of heaven in terms of a location. And while biblically, Heaven is a real place, the thing that makes it so appealing is that our Father is there. Being away from a sinful world and in a new place of perfection should not be the goal of my life. Rather being with my Father, who loved me so much that he gave Jesus as a sacrifice so that I could be right with Him--THAT is the goal of my life. HE is what makes it heaven!
Here's another:"Through the love of God our Saviour All will be well...On our father's love relying Jesus every need supplying Or in living Or in dying All will be well."
And because the uncreated God is there to sustain and provide, He is our energy and light and being. We can only dimly imagine what Heaven will be like, but as Paul says, we will put off mortality and put on immortality and see clearly, see face to face.
The great thing about hymnody, especially in these times, is that no denomination has a monopoly. And that great once-denominational hymns are now being sung in churches around the world.
A good example of this: "Praise to the Holiest in the height" by John Henry Newman was written to commemorate his conversion _from_ Anglicanism _to_ Roman Catholicism - but it is found in practically every Anglican hymn book I have seen!
What a powerful hymn that reminds us of our days on earth and the life eternal. The lyrics and the music that had flown through this composer are definitely inspired by God. What a great experience for the composer. As we sing, we feel the presence of God and the Holy Spirit and I am sure that this hymn lives till the second coming of Jesus Christ
Yes,very uplifting hymn-lyrics "our shelter from the stormy blast, and our eternal home" are especially words,to,live by and treasure forever,as we forever remember God's everlasting grace and praise.
Thank you for this. For some reason I found myself singing this in the kitchen today, and came to TH-cam to find it. It brought tears to my eyes. Thank you so much from someone in South Africa!
O God, our help in ages past, Our hope for years to come, Our shelter from the stormy blast, And our eternal home. 2 Under the shadow of Thy throne Thy saints have dwelt secure; Sufficient is Thine arm alone, And our defence is sure. 3 Before the hills in order stood, Or earth received her frame, From everlasting Thou art God, To endless years the same. 4 A thousand ages in Thy sight Are like an evening gone; Short as the watch that ends the night Before the rising sun. 5 Time, like an ever-rolling stream, Bears all its sons away; They fly forgotten, as a dream Dies at the opening day. 6 O God, our help in ages past, Our hope for years to come, Be Thou our guard while life shall last, And our eternal home.
Last hymn sung at the morning service of sunday, apr. 14, 1912 presided over by Cpt. Smith. Archibald Gracie IV recalls it and writes: “What a remarkable coincidence that at the first and last ship's service on board the Titanic, the hymn we sang began with these impressive lines: O God our help in ages past, Our hope for years to come, Our shelter from the stormy blast And our eternal home”. In loving memory of all who perished.
A hymn by Issac Watts that paraphrases Psalm 90, has been translated in to so many languages, even in to my native telugu; a south Indian language, with the same tune. Wonderful composition. Let the LORD the Almighty be glorified.
CashPresley32 I don't doubt it. I was just puzzled by the comment. OP said it was 'from the Anglicans' as it is (loosely). And now a gazillion different hymn books include it, so your comment about one of the many was, well, puzzling at best lol. And it's only more puzzling when you consider that LDS aren't actually a Christian confession (not least b/c they deny the trinity along with JWs & oneness pentecostals). So yeah, I just didn't follow the comment, that's all.
I am an ELCA Lutheran from South Carolina. I play the piano and organ. Today (November 3, All Saints' Sunday), we sang this as the Closing Hymn. It is #632 in Evangelical Lutheran Worship. And let us give thanks for the ones who have gone before us.
This was sang on the titanic at there church service, the day it sank. Eva Hart (7 year old survivor sang it loud and proud that day… in her moms own words)
Thank you for the glitch-free version. As a chorister when I was younger this was my favourite hymn at our remembrance service. This version, if I recall, was at Westminster after the 9-11 attack? Again, thank you.

Today 8th October 2023, Israel declared war on its neighbours. The implications are indeed enormous. We may all be singing this magnificent hymn in earnest in the near future.
"On that day, militant groups launched a surprise attack on southern Israel from the Gaza Strip, marking the start of the most significant military escalation in the region since the Yom Kippur War in 1973.[60]" Wikipedia
If you listen often enough with pencil, and score paper in hand, you should be able to take it down by ear. These things are rarely published. Church organists most often compose them as part of the job. Better yet, try writing one of our own. Delving your inner ear, makes music all the more ,meaningful and enjoyable.
Thank you HH. Pencil and paper is exactly what we did. Had our choir sing it (with a slight variation) at my father's funeral 2 years ago. The variation came in that while we had several outstanding soprano's we did not have a young boy's choir to duplicate it exactly. Nonetheless, it was grand.
Is it right that at the end of this wonderful hymn, the choir starts a "Kyrie" from Taizé? (a kyrie written by Jacques Berthier, who wrote a lot of music for the Taizé Community) notyobs, do you have the complete kyrie?
Too bad they did not sing all the verses. Most poignant is what is usually the 5th verse: "Time like an ever rolling steam, bears all its sons away, they lie forgotten as a dream, lies at the opening dawn."

Listening in 2020. A wonderful hymn for these uncertain times. He is our help in ages past, and He is our hope for years to come. Blessed be His name.

Absolutely right
And because the uncreated God is there to sustain and provide, He is our energy and light and being. We can only dimly imagine what Heaven will be like, but as Paul says, we will put off mortality and put on immortality and see clearly, see face to face.
I love these high anglican hymns
+typosgod Actually, it's a great old Puritan hymn by Isaac Watts. It paraphrases Psalm 90.
The Abbey choir and congregation do an excellent job.
+Dave G Fascinating! Didn't realize Watts wasn't mainline Anglican!
Me too

For the past few days - more or less the same here. No tears, though. Haven't been able to cry for nearly a year. May God have mercy on all people.
I had the same type of experience while I was folding the laundry. The Lord moves in mysterious ways!
Likewise
Praise the Lord!
The Lord certainly has mysterious ways to catch our attention!
O God, our help in ages past,
Our hope for years to come,
Our shelter from the stormy blast,
And our eternal home.
2
Under the shadow of Thy throne
Thy saints have dwelt secure;
Sufficient is Thine arm alone,
And our defence is sure.
3
Before the hills in order stood,
Or earth received her frame,
From everlasting Thou art God,
To endless years the same.
4
A thousand ages in Thy sight
Are like an evening gone;
Short as the watch that ends the night
Before the rising sun.
5
Time, like an ever-rolling stream,
Bears all its sons away;
They fly forgotten, as a dream
Dies at the opening day.
6
O God, our help in ages past,
Our hope for years to come,
Be Thou our guard while life shall last,
And our eternal home.
how can hearing this not let you know that you are not alone.. even in your brightest moments or darkest despair.

One of the great hymns of our century..Brilliantly sung by this great choir.
Written by Isaac Watts 1674-1748. But still of our time. To endless years the same.
Our hope for years to come. Our shelter from every pandemic, every catastrophe, every disaster. Welcome 2021 and a new decade
