Doom3 had extreme amount of audio compression. The whole game sounds like a 96kbps off compressed stream. Half Life 2 had something similar with MP3 compression on sound effects. GTA San Andreas from 2004 had extreme amounts of 32khz low bitrate ogg compression too. Different from GTA Vice city with pristine quality 192kbps mp3 radio stations. Gta 3 had IMA ADPCM compression on all radio stations and strong mp3 compression on sfx. Today we have high bitrate quality on all games.

DOOM 2016 was my first Doom game, so I feel like this references the riff of Flesh and Metal despite knowing it's the other way around. It's an interesting experience.

Doom 3: Playing as a regular marine. No "sonic speed", no God's powers, no Praetor Armor, no glory kills with bare hands... But still fights and does not give up, stays calm and serious while others lose their minds, die and become slaves of the Hell... Just a human, with his own fears and weaknesses, trying to survive in fight with Hell Army... In my humble opinion, that is why Doom 3 Marine is the most badass Marine))
To this day i still haven´t played through Doom3... I used to install and start it up again from time to time thinking "oh well it cant be that bad.... the graphics are pretty outdated ... it shouldn´t scare you that much". And although i know there´s pretty much nothing dramatic happening in the first 2 levels it still creeps the hell out of me - the ambient sound - the music - the people talking - the lighting. I always put it down again pretty fast :D
haha Doom 3 is the fucking scariest game I've ever seen: it's like watching X files as a kid. they're scary as fuck and you're just not ok with it - but at the same time they're so immersive and interesting. I think that's the true essence of a thrilling experience.

I love DooM 3... 2016 and Eternal were great, but this... This is something else. I really want to play the cancelled DooM 4. On the same id Tech 5 engine, with the same graphics as in Rage and Wolf TNO. It was id Software's best aesthetic.
The only thing that Doom 3 really nailed was a closer approach to realism. The environment is terrifying, Hell has a more realistic approach and the Devil is mentioned for the first time in the series.

DOOM 3 is a prequel to 1 and 2, they are all the same character
To this day i still haven´t played through Doom3... I used to install and start it up again from time to time thinking "oh well it cant be that bad.... the graphics are pretty outdated ... it shouldn´t scare you that much". And although i know there´s pretty much nothing dramatic happening in the first 2 levels it still creeps the hell out of me - the ambient sound - the music - the people talking - the lighting. I always put it down again pretty fast :D
haha Doom 3 is the fucking scariest game I've ever seen: it's like watching X files as a kid. they're scary as fuck and you're just not ok with it - but at the same time they're so immersive and interesting. I think that's the true essence of a thrilling experience.
Imps jumping at you from the dark, zombies creeping up around bloodied corridors and don't get me started on the moaning dismembered corpses in hell.

Played Doom 3 at my cousins when I was younger. Always wondered why Tool sounded so familiar and realized it was probably from this. Same with Slipknot from Treyarch Zombies

As a guy who never got to play any of the Doom games(but i will pretty soon) i can't believe my first encounter with this track was years ago while playing, of all things, Command and Conquer Generals(probably a pirated copy, i dunno). I was searching for this track for years, and only now do i find this gem.. i was a deadass for 15 years 🤣😭

Gotta say, as a kid, this was like the second or third game I really played. I had dabbled a little in Super Smash Bros Melee and Sonic Adventure Battles 2. Before Doom 3, the only other games I had thoroughly played was Halo CE and Halo 2. That was quite the shift in tone lemme tell you.

a spectrum analyser reveals a hard cliff at about 21kHz, so it's more like 42kHz. having said that, 21kHz is more than fine for most human hearing
it's certainly true that this is the "highest quality" available, but it has, no doubt, undergone at least _some_ form of compression, unfortunately. but still better than resorting to the vinyl rip. thanks for uploading!

I love DooM 3... 2016 and Eternal were great, but this... This is something else. I really want to play the cancelled DooM 4. On the same id Tech 5 engine, with the same graphics as in Rage and Wolf TNO. It was id Software's best aesthetic.

The only thing that Doom 3 really nailed was a closer approach to realism. The environment is terrifying, Hell has a more realistic approach and the Devil is mentioned for the first time in the series.
