    I usually use that little rectangle piece of white tape that holds the tail end on the new spool. Once I tie the line on the reel, I cut that tape in half and use it to hold the line on the reel while I spool it on. The mono backer is a great idea that I've never used before lol

      An Alberto Knot to splice the mono and braid is stronger than the double uni. It is also smoother going through the guides.

    Your timing is perfect sir. Trying to get out and do some pan fishing and I’m trying 6lb braid for the first time. I spooled the line and it got tangled to the mono I put down first so I can’t get a full cast without the line hanging up. Thanks much!

    Thanks! I spooled some 20 pound braid on one of my salt water reels today. I used 15 pound mono as a backer because that big reel can hold lots of line. I also don't want the chance of slippage on the spool. 🎣

    Being slightly over my mid '70's it humbles me to actually learn new tips and techniques. And I thought my Dad taught me everything I needed to know about fishing... Until I came across your channel, OK perhaps things do change LoL. I have never given any thought about the pre-loading of mono on my spinning reels befre adding the Braidesd line. That would be a great use for "out of date", or used and abused mono. I do have a question, do you think putting slightly more tension on the mono to get a tighter 'wrap' under the Braided line would really make a difference in keeping the braided line from slipping between the mono? I say yes, she who must be obeyed says not really. There are two new RAPALA lures and my latest refurbished Mitchel model 30 on the line here... P.S. I like the idea of your line tensioner, however I have been in electronics my whole career {retired EE} and have what is called "Technician Fingers" on my thumb and next 2 fingers, this was caused by pulling and testing hot tubes in equipment, the tubes went years ago, but the calluses remain, I will still make o
    ne and give these tired fingers a rest.

    One of the few videos that shows how to do it right. Most videos, even by 'pros', tell people to pull from the face of the filler spool thinking eliminating twist on the reel spool is a good thing not realizing after a few dozen casts, or the first line break, the first 100' or so gets twisted back on the spool anyway. And who wants a couple hundred twists between the reel and their next PB? THUMBS UP!

    if you forget to flip the bail and tie the new line onto the reel all you have to do is remove the reel spool from the reel, flip the bail and reinstall the reel spool. easy.

    What about with heavy catfish reels? I’m putting 65 pound braid on a reel for river fishing at a dam and mono that test is way thicker. If I get to the backing fighting a big fish and it’s lighter test I’m going to get snapped.

      You only need about a dozen wraps of mono to cinch down on the reel spool. You can go all braid from there and fill her up!

    Does it matter about the pounds of the mono and braid let’s say I use 12lb mono and 20 lb braid does it matter? And does it matter what pole as long as I don’t over do it?

    • @calebwistad
      @calebwistad  8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      You don’t have to match the braid and leader sizes. And yes, the rod does matter. You always want some flex in the rod if you intend to hook fish with braid on small hooks.

    usually reel come with specification like line capacity based pounds-diameter mm so I was wondering can you not follow those spec, like for example i have this seahawk ionic 500 size spinning reel which is clearly for ultralight but the spec here recommend specific braid line product with specific pounds-diameter mm. say it want me to go for 6LB-195yrd but can I go below that like 2LB braid instead? will there be problem?

    Using electrical tape does the trick. I have had the braid slice or break through the backer mono. I never worry about costs because my braided line typically lasts me about a year if i rinse it after every trip

    • @calebwistad
      @calebwistad  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Not a bad idea! The tape keeps the line from slipping I assume?

    • @WisGuy4
      @WisGuy4 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      One way to keep down the cost if you are using all braid is once you figure you’ve gotten about the usable lifespan on the braid, you’re really only talking about the first half of the line that’s been in the water. If you pull the line off the reel and then reverse it so that the old top of your braid is tied to the reel, you’ll end up with the top half or third of the line will be fresh unused braid that was just sitting on the base of the reel acting as the backer.

    That reel is actually braid ready, no mono needed. That's why there is rubber on the reel...You can use mono so you don't have to use as much braid but straight braid won't slip on that particular reel....

    • @calebwistad
      @calebwistad  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      That is correct. About 1/3 of my reels are “braid ready”. I still typically put backer on them though.

    Also have to be careful with those Daiwa mono estimates. If you look at the line diameter on the spool (.28mm for 12lb) vs. the typical diameter of line the same lb (.33-.36mm for 12lb) you'll notice it's much thinner. Daiwa bases their estimates off their own brand line and you won't get the same capacity if you use something else. It's deceiving because they only show the diameter on the physical spool, not on the online specs for their reels. People end up buying the wrong reel size if they bought it based on the mono estimates and in this case misjudge how much backing to put on. Their braid seems to be the same as other brands so not affected there.

      Hmm, interesting. Good to know!

  • @sn00pgreen

    completely wrong way to put line on a fixed spool reel, he's putting half a twist in the line with every revolution..you always lay the new line spool flat on the floor so it comes off the spool the same way as the reel is revolving

    • @calebwistad
      @calebwistad  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +5

      With mono that matters a lot, with braid it really doesn’t make any difference. At least not in my experience.

    • @JohnSumner13
      @JohnSumner13 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I agree. It’s better to spool up a spinning reel with the spool flat on a table so that the line comes off the spool in the same direction that it goes on to the reel, to avoid line twist. The technique in this video is good for spooling up a bait casting reel.

      @@calebwistad I should add, my spinning reel only holds 150yds of 10lb braid, so I find it unnecessary for a backer. If your reel holds double that or amore , I would definetely fill it up with mono first to save some money.

  • @aaronetheridge3735
    @aaronetheridge3735 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

    This is like trying to get line twist. This technique is good for casting reels but not spinning reels. The line should come off the spool counter clockwise.

    • @calebwistad
      @calebwistad  10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I would never spool mono this way. Braid is minimally affected by line twist and this method of spooling does not cause any noticeable difference.
