    Love that accent...a true New Yorker. One of the most important things he talks about is at the end on the proper way to net a fish.

    Great video of a blast from the past. As a kid I remember seeing Capt.Nappis fluke rigs on sale everywhere. I even remember seeing them at the old Korvettes in Douglaston NY

    Great video. When he talks about where the big ones are in the rips and rocks, it’s like he was a fluke in a past life and knew exactly where they lay lol. Awesome stuff.

    One of the best fluke videos I've seen. Thank you. I have been fishing for fluke my whole life in Jersey and have yet to break 7 lbs. Have gotten too comfortable with Gulp, may be time to switch it up.

    Love the experience from captain. Thanks for posting this old school video on how he does it. I've gotten to lazy using bucktail with gulp or squid.

    I have an unofficial 20lb fluke caught on the Voyager out of point pleasant NJ , 1997, we were fishing for bluefin tuna at the Bacardi wreck, tuna were not biting so we switched over to bottom fishing, blues, bsb and other species were coming up, I got a hit and set the hook, the fish was hard to get off the bottom, I finally got the fish off the bottom, it's fight felt awfully familiar.
    I was fishing the stern starboard side and the drift was towards the port side, as I reeled in my catch some yelled there's a big halibut coming up, the mate gaffed the fish and dropped it on the deck, the fish was over 40 inches and was thought to be a halibut, but when we got back to port it was identified as a fluke and weighed in at 20.2 lbs , unfortunately I was disqualified because the mate took the pole from me to get it untangled from other fisherman , I would beat the record by over a pound, I also have a 14.2 lb fluke caught in R.I. in 1986 weighed in at Al Conti's fisherman's world Snug Harbor Rhode Island, to this day I have not been able to catch a dd fluke, guess I should be happy with what i got.

      Very interesting story! Be happy regardless! I'm from New Jersey and have fished out of the point many times and even fished on the voyager a handful of times so to hear this story and to know that there is world class fluke in my home state, makes it even more interesting when I'm fishing!

    I always bait my hooks with 3 or 4 spearing making it look like a school of fish, premier bait for Nantucket when I’m not using gulp. Nothing but doormats!

    Wow! Great Job!!! He's right, the south side of Montauk is known to many fisherman as 'The Rips' Many huge fish in excess of 20lbs have been caught in that area! The late 70's through the early 90's you would always have a fluke caught in excess of 18lbs... I never had the pleasure to get many big fluke, but my best was about 3.5Lbs out of Reynolds Channel (East Rockaway Inlet) before i lost interest and began freshwater fishing then flyfishing.

    I'm from Jersey and what I use as big fluke bait is the white part of blufish strip but big ones and nothing else I'm talking 12 in or better strips I have caught fish to 13lbs this way in the ambrose channel and tons of fish 5lbs or better u can use a stinger hook but the bait looks the best in water with out it FLUKE are very very aggressive when they feed just feed um some line and you will be greatly rewarded

    Good content! Nappi is a legend, funny how he talks about the fish learning the lures and baits over time. Everyone is using Spros and gulp these days. One has to wonder what will be the hot new thing in a few years? Im sure Gulp will be hard to beat thou lol. Congratulations on you picture featured on the Fisherman Magazine.

      Capt. Nappi is indeed a legend. I his persona was just about as good as you could make it for the World Record Fluke holder! We love how he says "first". Even to this day he still has so much to offer us. Thanks for the mention about the magazine! We were very excited about it. Take care and keep in touch! - Capt. J

    all records possibly could be broken but he set the bar really high..i always wonder how many fluke over 15lb the commercial draggers get before rod and reel anglers ever get a shot at

    • @nextdriftfishing
      @nextdriftfishing  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Very true. I bet it's a lot. I also think they catch 20+ pound fish and keep it hush. I have a feeling we'll see one over 20lbs soon. :)

      @@nextdriftfishing heres an update for you..i got friendly with a commercial fisherman i met last weekend and i asked him about netting big fluke and he said they have netted many fluke over 15lbs and one he remembers specifically from few years ago they weighed and was 26lbs and that shatters the world record on rod and reel but he thinks those monster fluke rarely will get caught on rod and reel and that giant 26 pounder spit up a 13in weakfish..im sure there lazy being that big and just target very large meals and then just do nothing until its time to feed again..very interesting to talk to him and to hear about the giant fluke hes gotten
