I see a few similarities to Danganronpa. It's the same in the first one as if you lose all your hearts you just restart. I feel like if you like that series you will like this too. I think I will!
Great vid guys as always, i was on the fence but when you said i had 18 rating I wondered why i hadn’t got off that fence especially when big releases from Nintendo rarely target adults only , so rushed to the my Nintendo store because i knew they had a limited edition, and in no way am I having a go I love your vids including this they always help when like this im on the fence you’re always informative with no fluff or bull. Just wanted to say its actually only a 16 rating which is more adult oriented than usual lol. Anyways thanks or the review defo picking this up next pay day. Keep up the great work and happy gaming
@@stewartgillespie8816 I think the age rating confusion is down to the us rating which gave it an M for mature, which is 17+
For reference, GTA V is rated M. Very few games in america get the AO rating of 18+, thats one of the reasons Manhunt 2 got heavily censored so it could be sold in stores but retailers in america won't stock AO rated games.
But anyway, this game has some very mature themes, its more than it meets the eye. As mark pointed out in the video, the first case goes to show that this is an extremely dark and twisted tale. I hope you enjoy it!
I'll buy this game today, Raincode is one of greatest games of 2023 I like animegames and the colors of the game are beauty purple is my fav color. 💜
@@stewartgillespie8816A 16+ rating seems fair. There’re some very light se*ual talks and quite a bit of « fan service » with Shinigami (I could’ve gone without it personally) but overall it’s a very chill game. No nudity or anything. Same with the blood and murder related stuff. It’s very mild, just not for little kids.

I already gave this comment a thumbs up, but I gotta appease the algo' by formally agreeing with this suggestion. If SwitchUp is ever short on content, this could fill the gap nicely and benefit anyone who may not have heard of, or played, some older releases.

Ngl, I wanted to try this one for the city and atmosphere alone, but after hearing about the good story and almost full voice acting, I was sold on it!

Definitely getting a physical copy of this. Much more ambitious world and characters than what i expected.
Hardly surprising. Chunsoft games are mostly well designed despite being AA budget.
Characters well thought out and how they are incorporated in their respective games are incredible.
I wanted a physical copy but it was sold out everywhere. Should have preordered ;-;. So I settled with a digital copy.

The moment I saw the first trailer, I had to get this game. It certainly should not disappoint; love the art style, love the neon noir city, and really love a good mystery. Much like Shu Takumi's narrative excellence in the Ace Attorney series and Ghost Trick, Spike Chunsoft games really nail amazing story and characters as well.
Kodaka himself said that the skills were there so the players could format their own custom difficulties. I highly recommend using...none of them except speed up 2 so you can move faster. I had a lot of fun and the game is actually hard sometimes if you play it your way. I also turned off the mini map for immersion, meaning I memorized the maps for even more immersion. There was no mini map in danganronpa, there was no forced skills in danganronpa. And I think they had it right at the start. I love this game, 10/10 for me. Great review, I appreciate any praise this game receives.

I’m currently finishing the last file and I agree with everything you said ! It was a day one purchase for me since I had seen the trailer in one of the Nintendo events. The art style is gorgeous! It reminded me of Astral Chain’s. I’m a sucker for murder mysteries and this one did it well. Each case is different with a completely new setting/area of the town.
My main complaint is that I wish the labyrinths were a tad shorter since they become repetitive towards the end. I wish they’d have slow down a bit on the fan service for Shinigami lol. I had the thought as you, Discovering the city during the down time/inbetween cases is great.

Thank you for the review, y'all! Ive had this game on my radar since it was announced, and i even pre-ordered the collector's edition. Unfortunately, its delayed to the 18th of July (2023), but it pleases me to know that I'll have a great time with the game. I loved the Danganronpa games, so its great to see the developers breath new life into the "detective visual novel" genre with this entry!

I decided to get the game as soon as I saw its first trailer months ago (during a Nintendo direct??). You can't go wrong with these guys. Thank you for paying attention to such an unfairly treated genre.

First trailer made it a must buy. I wish the textures and stuff was higher res as it is an art heavy game, but its alright. What can one do about that, its portable, its on switch .

I just bought this game as it’s been in my cart for a while and went down $10. I didn’t want to pay the full price but $50 seemed much more reasonable. I personally really like to have games without stressful combat. While some of the games I love to play DO have stressful real-time combat, I don’t find it necessary yo enjoy a game nor do I find it preferable. I love strategy turn based combat and this game seems much more story driven and i look at it more as an interactive book or show I guess. I’m excited honestly. I love games that are a bit different than the norm and the Persona-like art style is a huge part of the draw for me.
I love all the other spike chunsoft games so I knew I needed this! My copy arrived today and I cant wait to get stuck in !

It definitely looks great! But I'm not sure if I like the combat. That's holding me back. I might just wait for Decapolice. It has the same vibe but combat is better (from what I've seen so far).
Thanks for the review! The negatives seem basically in line with what you'd see in Danganronpa or the Zero Escape series, so I can overlook them for another great video game from Too Kyo Games.
I've never played any of this game's inspirations, but I'm actually kind of curious about it. I may have to check it out at some point!

Just completed the Game. Fantastic story! And I think any persona fan would really enjoy this game. More like a persona Light type of game, with it being a digital novel type. However fantastic story and characters. Would 9/10 recommend for sure!!
I have yet to play the daganropa games and a hell of a back log but happy to see this score. will be for sure grabbing it at some point as I love the style it has and I am more than happy for more VN/action games.

i am a danganronpa fan so of couse i was going to get this , but your review make it even more a must play !! although , i am confuse about the DLC , will they contain story content? so should i grab the deluxe instead of the regular one?
Good review, i think i need to do a review of this because people are going to sleep on this game unless people promote it. This isn't a review but my first take from playing the games first case and reaching Kanai Ward (takes a while but its an enjoyable journey)
Initial impression:
Game is gorgeous, i've finished the introduction and am finally in Kanai Ward. It was an emotional few hours, with more twists and turns than a M.C Escher painting. Shinigami is... everything she describes in her difficulty selection and then some!
I've never played Danganronpa so I can't say how this compares, but so far the detective stuff really reminds me of Judgement, which I like, maybe a little more interesting than the original Judgement in that respect. As for the overworld I can't comment. Theres lots of story, the battles of logic in the mystery labyrinth sort of remind me of a more interactive version of the insult battles in the monkey island games.
Did I mention the game is gorgeous?
I'm not too fussy about graphics but I do appreciate when the image is clean, clear and smooth (regarding framerate ). Soo far other than a few textures most of the game seems quite nice, its on cri engine I believe, I dunno if their using some form of AA or they've just used appropriate asset detail but atleast of my tv i'm not noticing loads of jaggies, and its doesn't look really blurry so i'm assuming the resolution is either 900 or 1080p, either way it appears they've optomised the game well for the switch. . Framerate seems stable, dunno if its 30 or 60 i imagine 30 but either way, its not chugging.
The art style is really nice aswell, Theres something about the way they've used cellshading on the characters but objects in the environment appear to be not using cellshading, so the characters really pop, and then with the accents of neon and the rain, hot damn is it alot of eyecandy. but it works.
The voice acting imo is on point, the characters have alot of personality and its just a generally engaging game.
I'm interested to see what you can do in the town, i'm assuming it allows you to do some backtracking as thats a fairly common theme in point and click style adventure games which this seems to have some elements of.
I would say this game is more than it appears to be, for anyone who's been craving something a little different, this is that and then some, more linear than something like ToTK, but with some freedom to explore but more along the lines of Judgement, however I imagine Judgements world is more interesting to explore than this but we will see. I don't expect random things when exploring but its not out of the question.
It could really do with a demo because people will sleep on this game.

2:17 I see they experienced the same bug I did, if you pull ahead, they stop in place.
It's probably the same function as if you fell behind but not factoring when you get ahead of him.

Just bought the collector's edition for Switch based on another video of yours. I'm excited, though, I think I'll let my girl take the helm on this and I'll enjoy the watch. I'm hoping this will get her to play the Danganronpa series.
I enjoyed the Danganronpa games through playthrus from voice actors on TH-cam and played the Zero Escape series myself. But I only just started the Ace Attorney games so I think I'm full up on detective games at the mo'.

It is. It's one hell of wild ride though, just like the Danganronpa series. You don't need to play those games to understand this one, but I do recommend at least playing the first game to get a basic idea of some of the mechanics.

I think because there’s a season pass with it the main game is just to get you use to the dynamics of it

Good luck finding a standard copy. Been sold out for many days now at every retailer. Amazon, Best Buy, and Target in the states. They must not have released hardly any standard copies for retailers. Gamestop has it, but I will never pay them $8 shipping being a pro member. I checked all my stores in a hundred-mile radius and not one store has a copy. I was forced to buy a $111 limited edition with 5% off at target. I don't even get that shipped to me till around the 17th of July!!!!! 😭
I've been looking forward to this game as I'm a huge Danganronpa fan. I've barely played though so I can't comment too much. One thing I will say that I am disappointed about is the fact that in handheld mode the game is blurry which I hate. The text and character portraits are crisp and lovely but the rest looks like it needs a sharpening filter run over it or something. As much as I prefer gaming on my switch if I had the option for ps5 I'd take that as I hate blurry looking games

I can’t wait to see if I actually can stick with this game. First labyrinth almost done and I’m hating it. It’s just Dangonronpa, but styled in 3D and the first case is so boring and easy. I hope I don’t regret it
