  • In order to minimize the effects of anthropogenic climate change and to build a greener, more sustainable future, we need more than just personal forms of transportation to become electric: we need electrification of all vehicle fleets.
In Vancouver, British Columbia, BC Emergency Health Services has taken that task on head on, developing alternatives to gasoline-powered medical response vehicles like fire trucks and ambulances, especially when a significant number of calls to 911 don't require patient transportation.
And at Fully Charged Live in Vancouver two weeks ago, Kate was able to talk to José Font, Senior Business Analyst, for Logistics and Transportation Operations at BC Emergency Health Services about both the agency's all-electric ambulance car and their fleet of cycle paramedics.

Actually met Nikki, Kate and Jose at the Vancouver fully charged live show. Spoke to Jose at length about the operational aspects and seamless functionality of the vehicle with its integrated software and hardware. Definitely a game changer for first responders. This vehicle is but one small step that BC has committed to in helping change the workplace, and only for the better.

A lot of hatchbacks and stationwagons are ambos here in Australia. They are painted up in the same colour and lights.
Show up, stabilize, evaluate and if needed call for transport. Why take someone to a hospital if they just need some quick in-home help.

Most emergency vehicle uses don't need a doctor, so the doctor has their own emergency vehicle to go to where they're currently needed, for example when the patient needs serious emergency intervention before they can be transported or a major accident scene.

I live on Vancouver Island and I think that is a bad idea. EVs are very popular here and Tesla dominates the market. You can't go anywhere without seeing 10-20 Tesla's. Mustangs have historically been used by Police and other Provincial services and would be an easy to identify vehicle in an emergency. A Tesla would blur into the sea of other Tesla's being they all look the same. I'm not being hyperbolic at the amount of Tesla's either. "The Victoria EV Association, an 1,800-member club promoting the use of electric vehicles, estimates there are 4,000 electric vehicles on the Island - including about 3,000 Teslas." No one is going to give way for a Tesla, period. Lovely cars, however, not good for emergencies.
