Guys, you asked a question about who wrote this song. This is an important issue: Neil Peart wrote the lyrics for Vapor Trails after he came back from his hiatus, after he spent 4-years recovering from the death of his daughter and then his wife. He grieved for a long time and he traveled for years trying to find a reason to stay alive. This was from 1997-2001. Then he got remarried and rejoined the band to make Vapor Trails. The lyrics reflect that personal hell that he went through and you can see the difference in perspective that Neil had after all that! It's a GREAT album and I highly recommend listening to every song but check out the lyrics because...they are very interesting and compelling.

Guys, on the Vapor Trails songs, always look for the links for the REMIX-version of the songs! The one you pulled up was the old/original mix, which has issues. Rush needed to get that 2002 release remixed and they did in 2013. Keep that in mind for the future. OK..now, on with the song!
Generally I like the remix better, but there was a method to the madness of the mix. And for me the following songs do sound better in the original mix: The Stars Look Down, How It Is, Vapor Trail, Earthshine, and Freeze.
I just listened to this album on a drive to see my mom last weekend. Man, the whole album is fire. Peaceable Kingdom is a personal favorite, but sadly doesn’t get much recognition.
Secret Touch has always resonated with me. It's just a ripping song. You can't find your way out of the pain of loss without loving someone else, which sets you up for potentially more pain. "The way out is the way in."

I think of this song (and I believe it’s intentional because it always is for them!), as the intro and outro being the calm before and after the storm in Neil’s life. In between he had to go through the eye of the storm to deal with his grief! And that’s the maelstrom and chaos of the middle of the song. The way out of his pain and loss was finding love again, just as loving his first wife and daughter was the way into his pain. The way out is the way in… Just masterful and the music echoes the story. the more you listen to this song, the better it gets And the live version extends the outro groove with some really nice bass Work by Geddy that is worth checking out when you have a chance. I recommend the snakes and arrows version. Thanks again! And Rush on!
Guys, if you want to watch the live version of Secret Touch you should watch the R30 version, from Frankfurt Germany! I think that's the best version! They rip that version to pieces! See it live!
Songs about Neil’s grief in the passing of daughter and then his wife. Also the commentor should have recommended the cut from the Remixed Vapor Trails which fixed the muddy mix you mentioned.
If their last 3 albums were recorded and engineered similar to 80s&90s method, people would like them more. The arrangements and writing are great . They had a lot of great songs
Hey guys, the issue you are having with the volume levels and clarity of the instruments is the album production itself. It was bad, so bad that they released a Vapor Trails remixed later to make it right, completely remastered and remixed. Check out any Vapor Trails songs through the remixed album version! Any videos of the remixed versions can be easily recognized by the redone album cover that no longer has the black bars at the top and bottom.

Alex's guitar work on this song is 🤯 Yes, Neil did write the lyrics. This was their first album after their five year hiatus after Neil losing his family. Neil's lyrics especially on this album became more heart felt If you listen to the album version the remix is much better as the original is a bit muddy. Sometimes it takes a bit to get back into the swing of things. There is also a live performance of Ghost Rider from Rio that is excellent.That is another song off Vapour Trails. If you get back into doing documentaries again there is an excellent one The Boys in Brazil. They never expected the huge fan base they had there. Of course Alex is up to his usual comedic hijinks. LOL So nice to see you guys back. ❤

First album after Test For Echo and Neil losing both his wife and daughter and them not knowing they'd come back...really a great album.

You need to correct the title. This isn't Secret Touch, it's Vapor Trails. Also, you should know they have a remix version of this album that addresses the muddiness of this mix. They were never really happy with the original mix.
