The Making of the Steinway White House Piano in Miniature

  • This short, but powerful documentary tells the story of Paul Gentile and his 16 year quest to build an exact, functional 1/7 scale replica of the famed original White House Steinway piano. The original White House Steinway, serial number 100,000, was donated to the American people in 1903 to show the Steinway family's gratitude, as an immigrant family that lived out the "American Dream" in creating a successful business in New York City, beginning in 1853. That famous piano is now part of the collection at the Smithsonian Institution, and was replaced by another famous piano in the White House (Steinway serial number 300,000, donated in 1938).
In replicating the piano, Paul Gentile had to painstakingly re-create over 12,000 individual parts - often creating custom 1/7 scale machinery and tools in order to create parts of the piano in the same way the master artisans at Steinway & Sons create the full-sized versions. As Paul mentions, there were many immense hurdles, and many times he thought he was at a dead-end, but he persevered and eventually achieved his goal, which some describe as "incredible" while others describe as "insane" - though it's probably a little bit of both.

I saw this piano at a car show of all places (It was amongst some of the nicest exotic cars produced today) and other Steinways. As I was admiring the piece, Paul approached and answered questions and spoke about the piano. It took me a few minutes, before I finally realized, I was speaking with its creator. Such an honour to meet such a talented individual. You need a chair, sit down, and take time to admire the detail and craftsmanship put into it.

Wow! What an amazing achievement. I choked up a bit myself when the artist tried to explain the feeling of his model being called a Steinway.
    Well done Sir!

Wow, that is insane. I actually kind of felt what he was feeling when he was asked about "how it made him feel" that his piano was actually considered a Steinway Piano. That is brilliant.

Yes. Not a Steinway, but another working piano, and it's in 1:12 scale - almost half the size. The artist was Gerald Crawford. He did it for the Winterthur catalog in 1990. It cost $8000, and I still regret not buying it when I had the chance.

I have a black Steinway upright piano. It was given to me by my parents for my 6th birthday, and the people who moved the piano gave my a gaint teddy bear. I'm starting level 7 now. I started piano when I was 4, and my teacher said that electric pianos weren't good. My parents saw my passion for music. They would take me for a stroll in my baby stroller, and I would listen to the neighbor playing piano, and I would fall asleep. I'm hoping to be a music teacher when I grow up, and hopefully get a Steinway grand piano. My current music teacher works at a high-ranked music school, and she teaches me to "relax". I thnk I'm getting it, so I'm putting a goal to learn harder songs.

That is absolutely insane! Excuse me while I reattach my lower jaw once I manage to find it.
I've often wondered what it would take to make a fully functioning and perfectly scaled down replica of a Lyon&Healy Salzedo model or even still, a Louis XV Special harp complete with its matching accessories, but this bloke has blown those ideas clean out the water with his work.

A story about President Bush, the White House piano, the concert and the pianist.
In 2007 was poanist & composer Emily Bear (and 3 Awards winner at age 6) invited by Presidant George Bush to gifs a concert in the White House for the presidental family and 450 guest. Emily Bear was 6 year old, but already for two years a professional composer and a year a professional concert pianist.
The photo's of that concert with Emily at age 6 playing the piano, and with the President are on my Google+ channel.

    7:22
    "I can't explain it myself".
    The explanation is Idealization.
Folk idealize things in their world as a focus, a thing to focus on.
    .
He could just as easily been a Body-Builder competitor; it is all idealization.
Without idealization, folk would be goalless and have nothing to do.
    .
Extrinsic benefits of pursuing an idealized thing, are:
That you feel like you are doing something that inspires the envy of others.
That you are _touched_ by the idealized object, in so doing.
    .
All of this is idealization and not (philosophically) _Real_.
eg: There are plenty of Steinway pianos, in Landfill dumps, across this entire planet.
