    Love the video, but years spent in harm's way taught me to place little reliance on highly technical solutions to survival situations. I trust the recraftable boots on my feet, the pack on my back, and a nose that smells trouble early enough that I am already out of the danger zone before the masses panic and gridlock the roads. Nonetheless, keep up the great videos!

    I got an ebike a few years ago right at the limit (750w) where it is still considered a pedal bike on sidewalks, parks and wildlife areas where motor vehicles are outlawed. It has been a useful tool even on private land to haul out game in areas where side by sides can’t go. It had enough power with a little pedal to get up out of a canyon. Also they are more silent and quicker than walking along with not leaving human scent for deer.

    Hi .. I am so glad and grateful that you made this video! I'm a senior and I bought a really cool, fat tire ebike for stability, for transport and cargo independence from grid failure & gas expenses, and in my preparedness head space, I invested in 2, 100w solar panels, and a battery that could keep my fridge going for a little while. I couldn't get any info about how to hook up the ebike battery (48v) to the solar panel (now I know that 2, 100w panels would be too much) and that to hook one up, I need to get a charge controller. ...... anyways ... you helped me a lot and I thank you. (By the way, my bike has 7 gears that work very nicely without a battery so as long as my legs don't give out, this old lady can still motor .. lol)

  • @kuzadupa185
    @kuzadupa185 2 ปีที่แล้ว +192

    Imagine an e-bike which allowed you to use the battery/e-motor boost when wanted but also allowed you to turn off the motor and use the e-bike as a regular bike, BUT, had an extra "gear setting" which would activate a mini generator using the power of your legs to recharge the e-bike battery, and I suppose you could use this feature when you are feeling fresh or on easy terrain or even, hoise up the back wheel just a bit off the ground, and while standing upright/still, "ride" the bike in place, but activate the generator option...
    NOW THAT is an e-bike i would pay $3k for!!!!!

      Honestly when I first heard of E bikes, i just kinda assumed that's how they were lol. I'm actually suprised they arent. They definitely should do that. They could even make the front wheel have a generator to engage and disengage using a break handle or somethin. It would have to be a D.C. motor though so as to avoid needing an inverter circuit.

    • @MadZax33
      @MadZax33 2 ปีที่แล้ว +15

      Its called regenerative breaking... most e-bikes can not do that, because they have a freewheel clutch, so pedaling/moving the bike forward does not move the motor... so yes, all e-bikes can be ridden like a normal bike, just heavy.
      You can get motors with no clutch, or no gears, that can generate power with regen breaking, or can be set up to make power while you pedal... you would be surprised how much energy it would take out of you to charge a battery.

Its a small one but for charging little things it works great. The ebike on the other hand paid for itself in fuel savings in about 4 months. It is also a 4"x 26 tire. I wish I had gone for a more common tire size to be honest, just because of availability. The larger footprint is great in harsher terrain, ie , sand, snow, mud, but if your tread is worn, you're out of luck.

    I would go with a regular mountain bike fitted with short fenders plus a rack over the back tire. It is EMP pulse-proof and never needs charging at an inconvenient time. The much faster e-bike would be way too desirable during a prolonged grid-down and likely to make the rider a target for criminals armed with a rifle who want that e-bike.
    Alternatively, I would go with a saddle horse as my transportation anywhere but on mountains and in forests. Most people these days do not know how to ride a horse and many city folks are afraid of horses, so horses are less likely than bicycles to get stolen. And when you are camping at night, a horse will get agitated and make noise if smells or hears a dangerous wild animal or people approaching. No bike will do that for you.

    I have been an e-bike owner for four years. So I will put my two cents in. The Rambo is good but very expensive. I currently can purchase two capable off road e-bikes for the cost of one Rambo. So if cost is a factor the Rambo is not for you. The mid drive motor will give you more torque. That is the up side of a mid drive. The down side is if the chain breaks you are walking. the mid drive is known to stress a chain far more then a normal analog bike, so breakage is a concern. A geared hub motor will not give you the same hill climbing ability but will work even if the chain breaks. A non-geared motor will have even less hill climbing ability but has no real moving parts. If things go south I would not want to depend on a mid drive. Another concern is battery size, bigger is better. If traveling you may not have time to set up that solar rig and sit for 5 to 6 hours. A larger battery or carrying a spare will keep you on the move and may save your life.

    • @craigfreeman784
      @craigfreeman784 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Another issue with the Rambo it has no rack. Many cheaper non cargo e-bike have racks. The extra cargo hauling a rack give you may be the difference between life and death.

      The biggest expenditure is the ebike itself. I built one myself during lockdown, using a new mountain bike and a kit off the internet.
      It's not nearly as sturdy as the Rambo, but it only cost me about 1800 bucks, including the tools to actually build it.
      It's still an MTB tho, it does off-road with ease, has a range of around 40-50 miles(when using peddle assist moderately, on throttle only it'll be about 30), does about 35 mph on flat road. I added pannier bags for extra carrying capacity, which vastly expands its utility for daily use.

  • @albarranluis

    Two ideas to contribute on this awesome idea:
    1. Have a extra battery in the BOB, or bike trailer, which can be charged while you pedal if your solar panel can be mounted on top of the trailer.
    2. Have a 12V adaptor because if your e-bike survives an EMP because it was covered by the blanket you described on another video, then you have thousands of charged batteries from every stalled car (the EMP will damage the car but the battery will still hold charge).

    E-bikes can get really expensive if you want quality. So you're not saving that much in comparison to gas; however, I highly agree that it would be good to have one in a SHTF situation. Those things are freak'n awesome!!! Just having an e-bike to help one lug groceries, etc around would be massive help if transportation is an issue. Plus it's stealthy and you can go practically anywhere. Right now they're very heavy so I am looking forward for when the tech gets better to where they're lightweight and more affordable.

    As a keen cyclist who uses their bike to do the weekly food shop as well as just going out for fun, I'd advise anyone considering something like this to at least consider a normal bike first. Most non-cyclists seem to gravitate towards mountain bikes but honestly - unless you're planning on tackling the red and black routes at your local trail, they're not as practical as what would be marketed as a touring bike, or at least a gravel bike if the majority of your riding will be on roads or light trails. Don't under-estimate your budget for a good D-lock, a rear rack, panniers & good lights as well as a small repair kit. Full-length mudguards make a world of difference, at least here in Scotland they do.
    And whatever you decide - please don't just leave it in storage as just another prep! Get out there and ride. It's a great way to keep fit, lose weight if you need to and ....get from A to B! 😀

    I usually prefer a regular bike, as this will give me more exercise, and as long as my prepping includes regular sessions on my exercise bike (i gotta start doing this), i could travel a pretty good distance in a day. The problem in a survival situation is that i will have to eat more food if i want to burn all those calories. Solar panels will help me save food, but the problem with these is that you need some really powerful ones to be able to charge an ebike enough to get you the same distance you could get with pedaling.
    I quickly checked the specs on a random "test winner" ebike, and its 720Wh battery gives it 140km of travel distance. IF the solar panel would consistently give the wattage it is rated for (it wont), you would need 7,2hours of good sun to charge this with a 100W solar panel. This is if you charge AT NOON, at an optimum location/longitude, under optimum weather...
    I got 2x 28W solar panels (for camping), and a seemingly knowledgeable (Norwegian) reviewer states that it gives a maximum of 3,6A @ 5V... This is just 18W... This guy have probably been testing it under Norwegian conditions though, so im guessing you can get more from it further south... Still, it doesnt take much cloud cover to drastically drop the wattage...
    All this being said; 50km is my personal record for pedaling in 1 day - and i need at least 1 day of rest after such an ordeal - so im sure this bike with 100W solar panels could get me further in a week (of good weather) than i could by pedaling... And having an ebike available for use a couple of times per week seems extremely practical in a SHTF situation..! But such a solution will not work as good during the colder season, and a lot of people can pedal >100km in a day, several days in a row - so if you are in good shape (or willing to get in good shape), then a gravel bike or touring bike might be a better option...

This charges my 800 watt battery in ONE HOUR. Yes, its a lot to carry, but options and redundancy are great!
    Word of warning, THE SOLAR VOLTAGE MUST BE LESS THAN THE BATTERY VOLTAGE. If you put too much voltage on input it simply passes it along possibly killing your battery or starting a fire from over voltage. Hopefully your battery has an over charge cut off as this would stop the problem.

    Or just a regular bike....but yes e-bikes are pretty cool

      A regular bike and the tools/supplies to keep it maintained for 10+ years will still be a fraction of the ebike and panel. And I mean like 10+ replacement tires, gears, chain, break cables, brake callipers, etc.

      I think it could. I just bought a folding regular bike. I am putting it in my vehicle in case the car would not operate so I could get home. I also plan to just have fun with it also.

    I got a fat tire bike since I live in desert that also gets snow and surrounded by state land. I'm hoping to get either a gas or electric motor kit. I prefer electric but not sure I can afford it as soon as needed. I've been collecting solar panels, batteries and charge controllers like crazy besides ones I already have set up. My Doberman runs 25-30 miles an hour so it will also help build her stamina. She can catch rabbits, she's so fast. So, this could be fun practice until shtf lol

    Love the scene from the Walking Dead. I miss that show. Stopped watching after they let their only Medical person get killed because she wanted to go out and kill a zombie

    I’d be worried on how it would do in -30 like our Canadian winters. I imagine those batteries don’t like frigid cold like most used batteries

    • @fustercluck2460

      I got a jackery battery I used this winter and I had to constantly work at keeping it warm, or it wouldn't charge from my solar panels.
      I imagine this thing is the same principle?
      At sun up, I'd get out of my sleeping bag and hammock, plug in the battery to charge, stick it in the sleeping bag and my residual body keep would let it charge for several hours before the cold got in.

      From my own experience with E-bikes, the batteries are pretty temperamental things, that suffer with degraded performance in temperature extremes at both ends of the scale.
      Extreme heat turns the battery off, so does extreme cold.

    Having made a few e scooter projects it’s a great resource to have an ebike with portable charging abilities but certainly not cost effective but with a basic ebike 220w may charge it fully in 3-4hrs. But for the price of the 220w foldable panel Only you can buy two ebikes and over 800w of fixed solar panels Enough to charge them much sooner than the 220w panel
