Well the Movie Studio (without postfix) indeed is a house cat, Movie Studio PLATINUM is the cougar. There is pretty big difference between those two and it should have been mentioned. Basic Movie Studio is not worth those $50, not even close, but Movie Studio Platinum is a decent deal.

I left up "you're viewing Movie Studio" when I said you'll need Vegas Pro to Do a Custom Mask. When You see Micheal Jay Fox, It's Vegas Pro, not Movie Studio. For that brief moment, I displayed the wrong indicator. Sorry. Also, you CAN do free form masking with the Bezier Masking FX in Movie Studio Platinum 16 and 17, i think this feature was added later, but It's certainly there now.

Thanks for the helpful video. I use Hitfilm Express for compositing but find it as an editor leaves much to be desired. I am aware that Hitfilm and Vegas Pro are integrated - is it possible to integrate Hitfilm with Movie Studio? In other words, composite in Hitfilm and have the shot appear in the Movie Studio editing timeline.
Didn't know there was a Movie Studio. I thought it was just Vegas Pro! xD
that's what he said, most people only "downloaded" the Pro, and ended up not using all its features. So we are not aware of the 'lite' version of the software. Honestly, when he went on about the Pro features, he lost me and confirmed that someone like myself should stick with the Movie Studio and not Pro. Saves me money, and frustrations

Also there is not "better". It depends on what you want to do.
and if you're totally inexperienced, take Movie Studio. Less features, easier to use. Pro has more features most rarely if ever use and is more complicated.

Same, I didn't know what was the difference. I just wanted to do a simple video editing for my home videos.
my problem with movie studio is that it freezes up on me 80% of the time when I'm editing, and although most of time time it auto saves my project, I lose all my work at least 50% of the time. I've had to modify my editing, and render my video in about 2 minute segments, or risk losing it. I don't know why it freezes, I think it's because I am giving it too much to do, but I am far from a professional editor, so my "too much" consists of basics like increasing volume on clips, color correction, and adding multiple layers (audio, video and photo), but at max, those layers are probably 2 extra audio, and 2-3 extra video. But again, during the editing process, it seems unable to consistently run, the more I add, and if I push it, editing more than 2 minutes of footage, it freezes and I have to restart it. I am using this on a brand new Dell XPS 8940 DDR4 64gb Nvida Gforce RTX 2060 gddr6 and Windows 10. So my question is, is it just the cheap software that is crashing all the time, or does this happen as well with the $700 Sony Vegas software? I'm pretty fed up with it, so I'm ready to drop the cash if the legit software doesn't crash.
I had the same problem with freezing. It ended when I reserved memory for the program in the settings menu. There are videos here on TH-cam for setting up Vegas.
It does that to me too. I literally have my hand on Ctrl+S the entire time I'm editing, and I hit it after every single move that I make 😁
You seem to respond to a lot of these comments, so I may as well ask two things:
1. What's the difference between movie studio and movie studio platinum?
2. I'm only getting this to edit game clips, so if I just get non-platinum, will it work fine? I have experience with the mac's final cut from school, but it's sadly not windows-compatible. I really just need to cut, pause, insert arrows/audio, and that's it, so is non-plat more suitable? I'm all in for the cheaper option, especially since if I am really hurting, I can improve it down the road.
without the platinum you'll be missing a few of the nicer things like motion tracking. I'd only get the non-platinum version if you are just wanting to do basic cuts and correction. Platinum is 90% what Pro is, just missing a few key features that professionals need but hobbyist don't. I haven't had the non platinum version, but if you just want to cut out scenes, change the volume, and add text, it should be more than enough.

I have a smaller quick question example I have Movie Studio 15 and although I don't use movie studio in my professional life I just do it on the side making videos here and there. I will see for example that we are on 17 how do you feel about upgrading to the latest and greatest when they offer you the deals for being an existing customer.
I'm just trying to edit my gaming clips recorded from my PS4 for fun. I'm sure movie studio is just fine for that. I was also looking into Adobe but I definitely do not want their subscriptions. Is Adobe Elements a good video editor? I feel Vegas has more features.
I'm bias because it's been my favorite software since I was a freshmen in highschool.You'll have more features in movie studio platinum for sure. Does it support 4K monitors? I had to stop using it years ago because I got a laptop with a 4K screen and I couldn't believe Sony dropped the ball on this. The icons did not scale properly so they were too small to see. I thought they would correct it in an update. As far as I know they never fixed it.

Does V17 create Proxy files for 4K video using CPU or GPU ?? V16 Platinum uses CPU to generate Proxy files but uses GPU to render final MP4 Video ?
@@Accolades70 vegas pro 17 added gpu help with some codecs right from the timeline, while movie studio 16 platinum does not use the gpu on the timeline

solid video so far! great to see your input on movie studio compared to pro! you can definitely do a lot on movie studio but the lacking histogram functionality can be a hinder i would believe. but then again the pricing is crazy different..
Pros usually need pro, non pros usually don't because movie studio is so robust, but the prosumers are the ones who really got to weigh it because of what you just outlined.
Would you say it's more worth it to buy Vegas pro 16 edit for $30 or go for Vegas studio platinum 17 for $50?
Eventually you'll want to upgrade, so I'd pick the one you want to stick with long term. Platinum is a strong editor. While you may be getting a bit more value with pro 16, you'll save money later when you decide to upgrade movie studio in a few years
hey man, thanks for the comparison. seems like Vegas studio is more than enough for me and its alot cheaper. Tbh I have been looking for a good editor for past 3 days. All I got was premiere pro and final cut and that hurt my pocket. lol.... so i decided to look for something that is exactly USD 100, thats already hurting me haha and ended up here. Actually I have used vegas pro 12 for free few yrs back so thought maybe i can go and check on vegas, there i saw vagas studio. Gonna download trial for Suite and might buy Platinum . Yes the new one has color wheels a few more color correction tools too! It can't use outside luts, but it does have some pre packaged luts. Feel free to check out the rest of my tutorials! I've got a lot about the new Movie studio.

This is what I want to do. I am thinking about doing the Simpsons intro with Spongebob characters. It will be hand drawn in Adobe flash cs5. For the sound I want to buy a few episodes of the Simpsons and Spongebob off of amazon and rip some music and dialoug from the episodes and put that in my animation. Can movie studio do that?

For home video making... is it worth to spend more for version Suite ? Platinum cost 60% of Suite price.... and it's hard to judge differences... on table on magix website it not explain much for noob as I am.. Is it some big differents in stabilization or text, effects etc? .

Vegas Movie Studio is the standard movie development that comes with all the tricks and ticks that pro has, Movie Studio is just the first part.
Vegas Pro is a set of advanced systems that if you want to actually make advanced imaging along the lines of 3D editing, direct color frame chasing, and other 'Fast and the Michael Bay' super effects, then Pro is there for you, Pro better integrates with studio development to use more features then what you need to simply... plop down a video, sounds, transitions, text, layering imaging, and cool (non-tuneable) special effects.
So. Pro if you want your youtube video to look like... Freddiew/RocketJump or ERB. Where you take multiple instances and jam them together to look like theyre all there together.
Movie Studio if you simply want the par standard of what a mass majority of youtubers, gamers, and content creators have.

Movie studio can do all that, but vegas pro's motion tracking is better and has full freeform masking. If you don't need those two things movie studio can so the zooming faces and green screens, and keyframe animations

Can you have Movie Studio 16 Platinum and Movie Studio 17 loaded on desktop without editing problems? When I open 16 it gets lock up and takes a few minutes to unlock. I am concern if it could cause damage.
It should be fine! I had them both installed at once when i was testing it out too.

If you download the free trial you likely find you don't need any plug ins. If you decide you need them, there's a ton and some are free and other are very much not. It just depends. I haven't installed a plug in in years.

Both use the same method. Cpu proxie, gpu and cpu preview window playback, and you can specify which will do the final render. Check out my render settings vid for more!
how fast can you speed up videos in Movie Studio Platinum? (As in can I speed up videos by more then 2x speed?)

i used vegas pro 14 edit for the longest while, was on 13 too before i had the money to even buy a proper version, honestly the video editing i do is just for shits n giggles and i got the steam edition when it was on a massive sale, i dont regret it but i kinda wish i knew more about each version because now it seems like i could've paid about 30usd instead of the 50 i did for pro and would've still used it as i did pro

What are the specs on the laptop you all use for it? My laptop that I thought was totally capable of using it apparently isn’t, so I’m probably going to upgrade sometime here soon.
My issue is that preview quality is so poor that I cannot edit any videos. It jumps many frames at a time and is very distorted. Usually causes everything to freeze.

Its possible the "$600" Video editor has what you need in the same bundle, but I have not looked into it.
More compositing, more masking options, and more video scopes are the BIG 3, but there's a few smaller differences too.

there's a lot righ tout of the box, so I've never had to. I'm pretty sure there's a few that work for both pro and MS but i'm not 100% sure

Movie studio platinum 16 costs 26 euros on steam atm
So its like a poor-mans Vegas Pro. Pointless really, Vegas Pro is already a decent lightweight video editor, and any mid-range PC will run it well.
It's another price point option. You get most of vegas pro cheaply
5 hours ago i bought a 3 dollar version of pro from some ebayer in spain.. because in germany they are all banned .. now i sh*t my pants about trojans and am angry because the preview on a second monitor doenst work ... ... only to find out that there is just what i need from vegas in a 40buck version called "movie studio" ..i don´t know if i am happy now.. but very very thankful .. thank you tech dive avclub

That's actually a mistake i made. Movie Studio can do custom mask with the bezeir masking tool
