Vikings weren't actually that good at fighting,. When it came down to battles, Vikings got beat most times. On the other hand, they were fantastic traders.
You forgot to mention that the technology that created the Viking ship, is now considered the premier technological advance of the era. Viking ships could be built, taken apart, cartes up rivers and/or across to other rivers. They could be built large enough for open ocean going or small enough to hug the shore or go on rivers. All one needed to repair one was an axe, the knowledge as to what to do and a forest to create new pieces for the ship. So modern historians now consider Viking ships the best European technology of the Middle Ages. Not bad.
Viking raids were pretty simple in plan. Everyone jumps off the ship, grabs whatever they can, kills anyone who gets in the way, and then runs back to the ship before any soldiers can show up. As a wise man once said, "SNATCH AND GRAB Y'ALL!"
You only made it to Valhalla if three things happen. 1) You died in battle. 2) You died with a weapon in your hand. 3) The Valkyrie (Odin's daughters) find you worthy.
You'd either go to Freya's Folkvangr (the meadow for the people, with a beautiful hall where Freya resides) or you'd go to Valhalla, to Odin's hall. There you would not just drink, buy you'd fight your brothers and later on feast and drink and share your stories. Your ancestors would also be there. Until Ragnarok arrives and brother will slay brother and son will slay father and the long winter sets in (sound familiar?). Jormungandr, the monstrous giant snake will emerge from the sea and swallow Thor whole. Jormungandr's monstrous wolf brother will slay Odin and everything resets again. The first man and woman will return to populate the earth, the gods and giants will reappear and the cycle restarts.

This is my favorite of your guys' productions thus far, but I am biased. I collect medieval weaponry/armor and by far Viking style wargear is my favorite. Although none of my spears are 10' long I think the length of the haft in this case was usually determined by the height of the one that's meant to wield it as well as its intended purpose. Interesting note on the weight of battlegear. Like you say swords were usually about 2.5-3 lbs, but armor is quite heavy. My viking shields weigh between 7-10 lbs and a solid spangenhelm on top of the head will weigh between 5-8 pounds depending on the style. A hauberk of mail will weigh another 25-30 lbs, and even that has to be worn over a padded garment called a gambeson which is an additional 6-8 lbs. Dehydration and heatstroke killed many more warriors than is generally realized, as well as those unfortunate ones that might get knocked down and trampled in a melee. Then again only jarls and other wealthy individuals would have worn heavy armoring, and they would've had retainers.
The existance of Beserkers is uncertain. Some sagas depict them differently and it is likely they were not as crazed as some think, as it would not have been so useful to deploy lunatics who are just as likely to attack you as the enemy. Also not wearing armor while being in a state of lunacy would probably get you killed pretty fast
It’s actually not Harold Finehair used them to conquer Norway same with Caute the Great and Harold Hadrada even the Germanic tribes who fought Romans had berserkers 😂
Actually the first documented 'Viking' attack was at Portland in 787, described in the Anglo Saxon Chronicle, when the local reeve, Beorhtic, and some of his men were killed. Odin was NOT "the god of war". The whole subject of berserkers is problematic, that is to say unproven, as are the assertions made about 'shield maidens'. The Sagas are (like the t.v. series) are full of stories and myths that are self evidently exaggerated or completely invented - as still evidently happens.
@@fastertove No, the idea of there being "gods of" anything is a modern misconception, certainly as regards the Norse. If you don't believe me, go to the videos of Norse specialist Dr Jackson Crawford on TH-cam, or any respectable scholar like Kathleen Herbert. There were gods who had character traits and as such are associated with abstractions, but no contemporary or later medieval writing refers to any "gods of" anything.
@@darklingeraeld-ridge7946 I agree that the Norse probably didn't label them as "gods of...", but people did seem to pray to especially Tyr, Thor and Odin regarding military matters - If this is the case they must be gods of war. They didn't have the same hard defined roles as you see in other religions like in Rome or ancient Egypt (likely due to the oral tradition over writing and the lack of a central control), and was more seen as role models. But still, I don't see why they aren't gods of war... They were gods, they glorified war and were apparently often prayed to regarding war.
@@fastertove It's that idea of fixed roles that is wrong, and is essentially a modern habit of thought based on, as you say, other cultures. But even in those, this kind of labelling or badge awarding is lazy. One reason it's worth being alert to these things is that it is easy to assume that we can reconstruct the mind-set of these cultures - and simplify them - when in fact the original evidence which has survived does not support any such assumptions. The present video to which we are commenting has more than it's fair share of those.
@@darklingeraeld-ridge7946 What some people call lazy, others might describe as a way of understanding or describing the larger picture. Especially for layman and people just getting into this part of history, fx a younger audiance). For good and for worse, this will likely become more and more common, as it is a way to cope with the increasing complexity of our modern Society. Not all have the luxury to dig down in all different versions of fx Tyr to get the full picture. I do agree that we should be aware of "badge awarding", but I don't think this is the case with referring to some gods as war gods. Perhaps the issue is more, that people aren't aware that the religion(religions is more describing) weren't dogmatic in nature, and their gods and heroes deeds were perhaps more as entertainment than "gospel". What makes things more complicated is that it extremely hard to distinguish what was original part of the stories , and what were added by monks with preunderstanding of other cultures. I'm no expert in this field, by any means, but I think it is a great tool to understand the broader meaning (again, especially for schoolkids) before digging into the very few facts we actually know. Let's face it, we make assumptions all the time when describing something - but hopefully become wiser with each iteration. We are all more or less ignorant about what really happened :-) "All those moments will be lost in time, like tears in rain". Any way, I get what you are saying, but I am still unable to find arguments why they can't be refered to gods of war, because that is what they infact are and can be described as, but I do still agree that they weren't necessarily named that directly by their followers/audience. I disagree that it just lazyness, because most people dont need to know all about everything. So basically. I think we agree with most, but not modern name stamping. Sorry if my english isn't great. The main reason I react to these videos, is to practice.
Some early medieval paintings did depict Vikings with protrusions on their helms. But it was mainly for ceremonial purposes. Also, the Vikings did convert to Christianity in their later period. I think the program "Time Team" covered that issue on one of their episodes.
Your videos are very well done so much to the point I don't think anyone else really needs to make videos on the subjects. Their shield wall in the literal what first or second episode? Was the most ridiculous thing. Want a good shield wall look to the actual “Vikings” show; season 3 the fight between Ragnar and Borg; which they used in the video. Save the lack of Erilaz’s spear over the enemy that shield wall battle was the best.
10:20 not saying shield maidens didn’t exist (trying to deny archeology would be foolish), but female warriors were less common than their male counterparts (just because they were less common DOES NOT mean they didn’t exist) because the women most commonly stayed behind to look after the home (ie: children, farm, etc) while the men were away
I question the authenticity of a video when they start talking about berserkers like raging barbarians from Warhammer. That is something still perpetuated by pop culture, and I wish it would stop. If any of you are interested in actual fact based on sources about them, go read Roderick Dale from nottingham university doctorate thesis about them.
Lile I told someone else, I think it arises from the Roman accounts on the Celtic "berserkers" during the Roman expansion throughout europe and the first encounters with the Picts.

Bruce Jedi lee of Sweden 😂😂😂😂 as a Norwegian this makes me laugh
I'm Irish and from Limerick nice to see our city get a mention
A+ video!
LOVE IT! Epic history of those raids!
There were more gods of war. Odin was one of them.
We are all more or less ignorant about what really happened :-)
"All those moments will be lost in time, like tears in rain".
I'd love to see more videos on the vikings. Perhaps on their history/their beliefs (norse mythology) etc. More on the ancient Scandinavian cultures!
Coming soon
If you want reliable information and wild stories, read the Sagas of the Icelanders, or The Poetic Edda, or The Prose Edda. That's way more direct.
Love your videos so interesting
I find that sad.
The vikings are the best raiders of all times and best fighters
I've become addicted to both PBS Eons and Weird History, and I'm actually glad lol
Some early medieval paintings did depict Vikings with protrusions on their helms. But it was mainly for ceremonial purposes. Also, the Vikings did convert to Christianity in their later period. I think the program "Time Team" covered that issue on one of their episodes.
Gotta love the image from mount and blade
ikr
I must have been a berserker Viking when I was a teen cause I did that same thing, had no fear and attacked anybody in my path like a fool
no, you were just an idiot
What a douche
I'm indian never had intrest in Indian history. But i would like to discover more about Vikings.
King ragnar 🔥🔥🔥
I like that you use Alec Steele's viking sword as an example of a well made sword
Your videos are very well done so much to the point I don't think anyone else really needs to make videos on the subjects. Super entertaining, with a lot of insight and every single joke is witty and well thought out and right to the punch and you just move on, without any annoying sound effects. I love learning. Great channel and great job, man, keep it up.
Look, forget any possible historical facts, Can I say, there isnt a red blooded male, that hasnt wished, at some point, he was a Viking warrior. I know I have, and I'm 63
Hell yeah, raiding monasteries in the name of Tyr and Odin, burning everything that stand in the way, navigating around with other vikingr and the hygiene, pure awesomeness 🪓
There are also a few women that wouldn’t mind being badass shield-maidens.
Overuse commas much
People overlook the part about soldiers having no fearing being in an adrenaline state before the fight
That friar duck reference and the voice you did for that one speech omg just marry me
Such amazing and Interesting information! I love your channel man!. Once I watch one the marathon begins.
I'd love to be a Viking for a day.
You probably wouldn't survive that day tho
If your fit and know how to use axe's your fine
Thanks for pointing out the helmets....I enjoy your videos.
Just don't learn too much from them, this video is insulting to anyone who knows anything about this field.
Horned helms, and other similar decoration, were reportedly the realm of some Gallic Celts in the ancient/classical period.
@@NefariousKoel And in Scandinavia there has been found a couple that - sort of - passes as horned helmets as well, only they're from the bronze age and clearly ceremonial headpieces. They're basically the same as the celtic ones, as they're also ceremonial. If you want to look them up, they're called the Viksø helmets. The whole horned helmet viking thing is borderline offensive to Scandinavians, though. While people these days are slowly discovering that vikings never wore horned helmets, I've known that for all of my life. :)
The video the pictures the knowledge the sounds the volume the type of music you have chosen everything is well put together I’m so impressed
And in order I just really appreciate you taking the time to do what you do 🙌🏿🥰
what "knowledge"?

@@jahempress26 as someone who actually knows even a little bit about Norse history, this video is total bull pucky, I couldn't get past the complete inaccuracy of the content, but sure, admire the pretty pictures
Watching this episode, Ulfberht sword - the super-weapon of the time comes to mind..
Quality content. Subscribed
Mad new respect to the Vikings. Cheers!
"Berserkers"
*angry Lindybeige noises*
Considering that Ragnar Lothbrok didn't exist, but is a person created by a few combined norsemen that did great deeds (can't remember their names) and that Ragnar himself is considered a myth, this isn't really a valid point on shieldmaidens.
Kostas Biker you should look up Ragnar Lothbrok I just did. It said he was real . I don’t know for sure I was not there lol 😆 no hate my man
What about Odin’s Valkyries 🤷🏻♂️
@@calcaleb7041 They're not considered real people, they didn't actively fight in mythology, and they're, well, mythological.
Erik the Viking is one of the funniest movies of all time!
A+ video!
LOVE IT! What an epic video!
*Berserk means literary "only the tunic" ber=only/bare, serk=tunic*
_in Sweden when i grew up i still heard people say things like " och han sprang ut i bara serken"= "and he ran out in only hes tunic,"_
_using the "bara serken" expression as a part of a story was a kind of humorous/kind of serious expression_ _of emergency people used when they wanted to retell a dramatic or slightly dramatic event._
_a tunic had not been in fashion for a long time when i was a kid, and you could sense that this expression was ancient in some way i cant describe._
You could have used the last kingdom as an example for your shield wall other than that great video.
the last kingdom is a guttoral piece of shit.
Love the vids
I was not expecting a Micky ward reference but damn am I pleased
Thxs for these great videos.
So basically Berserker = Marine Corps
10:20 not saying shield maidens didn’t exist (trying to deny archeology would be foolish), but female warriors were less common than their male counterparts (just because they were less common DOES NOT mean they didn’t exist) because the women most commonly stayed behind to look after the home (ie: children, farm, etc) while the men were away
Finally. A person who does not deny logic or literal facts because of his narrow-mindedness and ignorance.
@10:02 Kathrine Winnick Alert! She absolutely slays me, no pun intended.
I wish we could use a time machine just to view some amazing events like this
I love the music in these videos
yes. 110% yes. pump me full of psychedelics and beer then give me an axe and let me charge into an army alone. Time travel here I come
i would like to know the history of the pirate blackbeard
Actually the viking raids were a response to Charlemagne of the Holy Roman empire started his crusades in east europe and Denmark.
once the god poles where burned and holy groves cut down by christans pagans wanted revenge
The owner needs to flag this comment
They were raiding in eastern Europe hundreds of years before 800.

Sounds like an Amon Amarth mosh pit to me
Did I hear some Age of Conan music throughout? was hard to tell in some instances. If so, perfect choice..
Yawn
@@MysticMac96 adorable.
Lile I told someone else, I think it arises from the Roman accounts on the Celtic "berserkers" during the Roman expansion throughout europe and the first encounters with the Picts.
I will, thank you.
